00:00 - 00:05
Hi, this is Andre Cohen. I want to say thank you so much for joining uh the session.
00:05 - 00:10
I wanted to just send you a quick note, a little update on uh
00:10 - 00:15
some of the aspects that we talked about in our first uh gathering.
00:15 - 00:18
So I want to get this kind of out of the way.
00:18 - 00:24
Um because there are a couple of things that um as I was reflecting on that, that I did
00:24 - 00:26
want to make sure that I hit
00:26 - 00:31
uh a little bit different, right? So uh obviously, we know how to get into the class.
00:31 - 00:33
We know where those conversations are happening.
00:34 - 00:38
We talked a little bit about just as a recap, we talked about
00:38 - 00:43
um spending our time in this polarized identity where we're trying to pull someone
00:43 - 00:49
from their perspective to ours, right? And how much energy that would take it.
00:49 - 00:52
And what we uh what I hope we walked away ultimately
00:53 - 00:57
is that what we're really after is understanding the other person's perspective,
00:57 - 00:57
right?
00:58 - 00:58
So,
00:59 - 01:03
um because the the more we can understand someone's perspective,
01:03 - 01:10
the more likely they are to be open to, to hearing our perspective or of being open to,
01:10 - 01:14
to even changing or entertaining a different perspective themselves.
01:14 - 01:14
So
01:15 - 01:17
that was um that was something that we talked about.
01:17 - 01:20
We talked a little bit about the ground rules and how they can be
01:20 - 01:25
the foundation for most interactions that we have with other people, right?
01:25 - 01:30
That this notion that we're focused on our goals that our behaviors should, uh
01:30 - 01:33
thoughts and behaviors should be aligned with our values, um
01:34 - 01:37
particularly organizational values that we en
01:37 - 01:38
encourage curiosity,
01:38 - 01:42
we offer other people the kinds of things that we want for ourselves,
01:42 - 01:45
like respect and dignity and being listened to
01:45 - 01:50
and that we offer grace and accountability as a part of that,
01:50 - 01:53
that grace, right? So we, we talked a little bit about that.
01:54 - 01:54
Um
01:55 - 01:56
I did
01:56 - 02:01
want to talk about this idea of our intentions and our behaviors again,
02:01 - 02:05
when they're aligned, we are said to be self actualized.
02:05 - 02:07
I er and including
02:07 - 02:08
uh
02:08 - 02:14
being effective, right? So when we are aligned, we can say that we're effective
02:14 - 02:17
uh when our intentions and our behaviors,
02:17 - 02:23
our values and our goals are all in concert, we are being effective.
02:23 - 02:26
And when we're, when we have a gap between those two things,
02:26 - 02:31
that's when we have the opportunity to change, to help, to be mentors, to coach,
02:31 - 02:33
to uh to educate.
02:34 - 02:34
And
02:34 - 02:36
when we don't, um
02:36 - 02:41
we don't recognize that our, our organizational goals actually give us direction,
02:41 - 02:42
right?
02:42 - 02:42
So
02:42 - 02:44
in a, in a state of ambiguity,
02:44 - 02:49
when we don't know what to do when we don't know how to act or behave, uh, personally,
02:49 - 02:51
my goals di direct me.
02:51 - 02:54
Right. So, um, when I'm, um,
02:54 - 02:55
in
02:55 - 03:00
encountering a new situation or a crisis comes up, it's my,
03:01 - 03:02
that helped guide
03:02 - 03:05
my behavior as an example. We were, um,
03:05 - 03:10
hiking in, uh, in Montana and I stumbled upon a rattlesnake
03:11 - 03:15
and, um, I've seen Rattlesnakes in National Geographics.
03:15 - 03:20
I've seen the movies but I've never come face to face with a rattlesnake myself.
03:20 - 03:23
And so just thinking about what I'm supposed to do when I,
03:23 - 03:27
when I approach this rattlesnake or interact
03:27 - 03:28
with this rattlesnake,
03:28 - 03:33
um I forgot what the plan was, but I did tell my, my kids to get back.
03:34 - 03:38
I told my, my, my, my, I told my, my Children to stand behind me.
03:38 - 03:39
Um be
03:39 - 03:45
because my value was, I didn't want them. I'm, I'm an adult. I can take a bite better.
03:45 - 03:47
I can, all of these things came.
03:47 - 03:49
Um, but it was centered on my values.
03:49 - 03:51
And so in our organizations,
03:51 - 03:55
the same thing can happen when we know what our organizational values are.
03:55 - 04:00
When people value trust, believe in those organizational values,
04:00 - 04:02
then we have the direction that we want.
04:02 - 04:06
And so this ambiguity that we oftentimes face becomes less scary,
04:06 - 04:10
less intimidating because we have those core values.
04:10 - 04:14
And we talked a little bit about this idea or the notion
04:14 - 04:19
that uh we're, we're trying to be effective, right? And so repulsion.
04:19 - 04:20
Um
04:21 - 04:25
uh avoidance and tolerance don't necessarily get us
04:25 - 04:28
to a point past 50%.
04:28 - 04:32
Um And so we, we really want to be effective in our organization.
04:33 - 04:35
So we're looking at acceptance appreciation
04:35 - 04:39
and uh and the sense of belonging is, is, is what we're after.
04:39 - 04:44
So when we are minding that gap, when we mind the gap, when we pay attention to
04:44 - 04:49
the gap, we align, we make sure that our intentions, values,
04:49 - 04:52
goals and behaviors are aligned, right?
04:52 - 04:57
And so when that happens, we're said to be a again, uh being effective.
04:57 - 05:01
And so that, that's what we're after because when we're not,
05:01 - 05:04
we end up with this, this randomness.
05:04 - 05:08
We we we, we don't know what, what, you know, justice looks like. We don't know
05:09 - 05:12
how to measure or weight our values. We don't know what our target is.
05:12 - 05:17
We don't know how we should feel or we have these feelings, but we don't know what,
05:17 - 05:21
what buckets to put them in or how to use that information in an effective way.
05:21 - 05:24
And so those things become really important.
05:24 - 05:26
We also talked about this notion of being bons
05:26 - 05:27
eyed, right?
05:27 - 05:30
So sometimes the the the places where we've grown up,
05:30 - 05:32
the people that we've been around
05:32 - 05:32
um
05:33 - 05:38
try to mold and shape us with oftentimes the best of intentions, right?
05:38 - 05:43
So um the the the their intentions may have been good, but given my
05:43 - 05:46
responsibilities in the organization, given
05:46 - 05:49
the the task, the missions that I've accepted
05:50 - 05:53
some of those ways of thinking may not be effective
05:53 - 05:56
uh for me to today may not help me today.
05:56 - 06:01
And so, um I did just want to send you this recap uh with the,
06:01 - 06:04
with the slide deck as well so that um
06:04 - 06:08
you had an opportunity to uh to review that and
06:08 - 06:11
uh we will talk um this coming week and I,
06:11 - 06:14
I hope you, I hope you're enjoying the class thus far.
06:14 - 06:15
And um
06:16 - 06:18
that's it for today. I'm Andre Cohen.
06:18 - 06:23
I look forward to seeing who we become as we proceed. Thanks so much. Bye.
