00:00 - 00:03
Hi, My name is Kendall and this is my Superfund project.
00:04 - 00:08
So for this project, I chose to the Sinclair Refinery in Wellsville, New York
00:10 - 00:12
The purpose of this slideshow was to highlight the core
00:12 - 00:16
concepts and site specific information about the Superfund program.
00:19 - 00:21
These are some vocabulary words that I found when I
00:21 - 00:24
was doing my week research about this super fine.
00:24 - 00:29
Some of them include what is your refund is point source and what a refinery is.
00:32 - 00:36
Here's a map of exactly where the Sinclair refinery is located in that jury.
00:36 - 00:37
Circle around it so you can see it right there.
00:41 - 00:42
Background.
00:42 - 00:46
A 100 acre Sinclair oil refinery is located
00:46 - 00:49
between the Chinese River and south Brooklyn Avenue.
00:49 - 00:54
The site has two different areas. A 90 acre refinery and a 10 acre landfill area.
00:55 - 00:57
They put immediate actions into place by putting
00:57 - 01:00
the sites long term remedy into place.
01:00 - 01:03
There was a site inspection done by the E P A so that they
01:03 - 01:07
could confirm that all the systems were operating like they were supposed to,
01:07 - 01:12
and a protective worked protective to human health.
01:12 - 01:17
The refinery was built in 1901 for the processing of Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil.
01:17 - 01:20
The Sinclair Refinery Company purchased the refinery in
01:20 - 01:24
1919 and started working on it through 1958.
01:24 - 01:26
They emerged with a company called Arco.
01:26 - 01:27
During this time,
01:27 - 01:29
the company manufactured products like heavy
01:29 - 01:32
oils and grease lubrication applications.
01:34 - 01:35
In more detail,
01:36 - 01:39
the site was used to dispose of acids, pesticides,
01:40 - 01:42
waste and other heavy metals.
01:42 - 01:45
The refinery was purchased by a some clarifying company.
01:45 - 01:49
One of the immediate actions that they did was to merge with a company called Argo.
01:49 - 01:53
They removed about tin drums from the Chinese river
01:53 - 01:56
that had entered from the flooding of the landfill
01:57 - 01:58
In 1983.
01:58 - 02:02
They decided to move the river away from eroding face of the landfill
02:02 - 02:07
and place some dredged material there as a temporary protection against erosion.
02:10 - 02:11
What were the health patches
02:12 - 02:16
and this site? One of the main things that was found were hazardous waste.
02:16 - 02:21
Some of these included pesticides, segments, waste oil and other heavy metals.
02:21 - 02:24
These contaminants were found in the soil, surface, water,
02:24 - 02:26
groundwater and more places in this site,
02:27 - 02:31
these chemicals from toxic to humans and the rest of the environment,
02:31 - 02:34
making it much more important for them to get it under control.
02:37 - 02:38
How has the community been affected?
02:39 - 02:41
The toxic waste has been affecting the community.
02:42 - 02:45
There were many ways found in the environment, such as pesticides,
02:45 - 02:47
surface water and groundwater,
02:47 - 02:50
which is why they took immediate action to get it under control.
02:52 - 02:56
Current status of the project In June, 2017 e. P. A.
02:56 - 03:00
Completed its fifth year review report of the Sinclair refinery site.
03:00 - 03:03
It took relevant data, including the two records of decisions.
03:04 - 03:06
They also did investigation reports,
03:06 - 03:10
progress monitoring and operation and maintenance reports.
03:10 - 03:12
Based on the results, the EPA concluded
03:13 - 03:18
that the actions taken at the Sinclair refinery site we're just to protect human
03:18 - 03:19
health and the environment.
03:20 - 03:25
The site states that long term protectiveness is achieved by implementation of
03:25 - 03:28
easements and convince
03:28 - 03:29
at the site
03:29 - 03:35
properties. All of this has been filled with the county clerk, effective in
03:36 - 03:37
October of 2014.
03:39 - 03:42
The costs associated to complete this Superfund
03:43 - 03:46
Was not $9 million dollars and it took place in May.
03:48 - 03:53
Here are some of the links to the resources that I use to find my information
03:53 - 03:54
closing statement
03:55 - 03:59
the toxic waste for a major problem problem in the Sinclair refinery.
03:59 - 04:03
That's why it was very important to get all of these segments and other chemicals out
04:03 - 04:07
of the rivers so that it would be not not be spread and hurt the environment.
04:10 - 04:15
And here are my M. L A. Citations and references. Thank you for watching my video.
