  1. Hi. My name is Marcy Martinez, and I am a
  2. recent graduate of the Transitional DPT program at University of
  3. ST Augustine.
  4. August 2020 and I'm continuing on with my e d
  5. d. So my project for this residency is physical therapist,
  6. assistant faculty development and in particular, faculty development for a
  7. new and developing program.
  8. I am the director of such a program for our
  9. local community college, and we have spent the last three
  10. years developing curriculum creating the program, Um, really building this
  11. program from the ground up, and that includes hiring faculty
  12. and assigning them to different teaching options.
  13. We have, um, filed our application for candidacy, gone through
  14. the site review and the Captain Review, and have been
  15. granted candidacy for accreditation and have been able to start
  16. our first cohort this past January 2021.
  17. So, yeah, we have students in the building, so our
  18. program is intentionally designed pre cove it as a hybrid
  19. or blending blended learning program with all of our theory
  20. courses online and our lab courses face to face.
  21. Our college district spans over 10,000 square miles, and we're
  22. in a very rural area of northern California.
  23. So we wanted to minimize travel on a daily basis
  24. for students, and we wanted to reach out to working
  25. adults as much as possible.
  26. A little bit of background regarding the P T A
  27. faculty requirements through the cap T standards and required elements
  28. for a physical therapist assistant program.
  29. There are specific requirements that must be met in order
  30. to achieve accreditation.
  31. And in Standard four, which regards faculty four D in
  32. particular, states that each associated faculty member not on Lee
  33. has toe have contemporary expertise in their assigned teaching areas.
  34. But they also have to demonstrate effectiveness in teaching and
  35. student evaluation.
  36. This is challenging for a brand new developing program, as
  37. we don't have a pool of clinicians who also have
  38. academic backgrounds.
  39. We don't have universities nearby who have PT programs where
  40. faculty may have taught.
  41. We don't have pools of faculty to draw from from
  42. other areas that can really come in and teach some
  43. of our courses.
  44. So we're depending on our local clinical community to become
  45. our faculty in six standard 66 I one in particular
  46. discusses distance education and how the faculty who are going
  47. to be delivering the online courses have to be effective
  48. in the provision of distance education.
  49. To go along with this CAP, T has adopted position
  50. papers and a position for online faculty, in particular states
  51. that faculty must be appropriately trained for online instruction, including
  52. the use of the course management system, development of online
  53. content and presentation options, student assessment methods, course assessment methods
  54. and assessment of academic and student service is so our
  55. faculty really need to be able to learn how to
  56. do these things before they become faculty or approved for
  57. faculty As far as our local institution for career and
  58. technical education, Uh, the C T faculty must have a
  59. minimum of two years of experience in their field, and
  60. in our particular programs, case must be licensed P.
  61. T S or P T A s to teach in
  62. our program.
  63. So we're asking our clinicians to become faculty.
  64. So I've developed a plan based on requests and efforts
  65. from Cap T Thio help us and guide us and
  66. prompt us to make sure that we're doing as much
  67. as we can for our faculty development in California.
  68. In the community college system, we have a UM fairly
  69. robust online training platform called the Online Network of Educators
  70. at one and all of our faculty are required to
  71. take courses regarding wth e introduction to Teaching on Canvas,
  72. which is our learning management system here in the California
  73. community college system, as well as a course called Online
  74. Introduction Toe Online Teaching and Learning, which covers pedagogy.
  75. Andrew Gogi different presentation styles for different learning styles and
  76. really gives them some training in basic online instruction.
  77. We've also, um, paid for all of our adjunct faculty
  78. even before they come onto contract to participate in the
  79. Magnet Teaching Professor Conference, which is, uh, conference that's put
  80. on by higher education professionals for higher education professionals.
  81. And so all of our faculty were able to attend
  82. that conference this summer virtually on Dhe had some really
  83. great classes.
  84. Now that wasn't quite enough for Cap T.
  85. So I developed a plan, and these last three are
  86. actually really kind of the crux of my project here.
  87. I've developed a Siris of instructional videos for my faculty
  88. that I call Monday morning mentoring with Marcie Martinez and,
  89. um, they are 10 less than 15 minutes.
  90. Um, some of them less than 10.
  91. My goal is less than 10, but a couple of
  92. them speak up there, and I am going to email
  93. these videos to all of my faculty.
  94. I have nine adjunct faculty, and I'm going to email
  95. these videos each Monday morning, um, to provide them an
  96. opportunity for some instructional benefit in things like what is
  97. blended, learning and what is a flipped classroom?
  98. What are outcomes?
  99. Assessment? What is the backward design model that we use
  100. when we develop a course?
  101. I talk about online development from a framework called the
  102. Community of Inquiry.
  103. And so I will be doing a video about social
  104. presence, one about cognitive presence.
  105. And what about teaching presence and the tools and the
  106. methods and the way we utilize those things?
  107. To make sure that students are getting what they need
  108. in their online classes.
  109. I'll be doing a video about student assessment, specifically another
  110. video about feedback, specifically, another video about tools tool box
  111. that you can use to achieve all of these things
  112. in your course, using technology to leverage student engagement to
  113. really focus on getting students moving towards your learning objectives,
  114. always keeping the learning objectives in mind.
  115. So there'll be a Siris of 10 videos leading up
  116. to, ah, Faculty Development Day, which will be an eight
  117. hour conference for all of our faculty where we're gonna
  118. really go over all of their curriculum.
  119. We're gonna really go over their courses.
  120. We're going to talk about the objectives we're going to
  121. talk about the Silla by.
  122. We're gonna have our canvas gurus from campus come in
  123. and discuss with them navigating canvas eso All of those
  124. things were gonna be included in this faculty development plan,
  125. and then this individual faculty are preparing to come on
  126. board and teach.
  127. Then I will have individual meetings with them.
  128. Is the program director to really give them some more
  129. formal mentoring but in the entire process?
  130. So the impact of this project is to really help
  131. clinicians transition through professional development, um, into quality faculty, that
  132. air really going to engage our students?
  133. There are limited resource is for P t A programs.
  134. While there are some things out there like a national
  135. conference called, uh, new faculty Development workshop through the a
  136. p t.
  137. A Academy of Education, Um, it was canceled this year
  138. they decided not to do it as a virtual conference,
  139. and it's in Chicago.
  140. So it's cost prohibitive for many clinicians to do that
  141. type of a faculty development workshop.
  142. And it really doesn't go into things like specific student
  143. assessment and feedback and those kinds of things.
  144. It's really more of a leadership, um, issue.
  145. There are a few residency programs across the country for
  146. developing faculty where you could do a residency if you
  147. have a D P T.
  148. But that doesn't really help PT assistants who want to
  149. become faculty.
  150. So there are limited resource is sometimes for physical therapist
  151. assistant programs.
  152. This will help to meet the capped E standards for
  153. physical therapist assistant faculty in our local program.
  154. And it's going to provide support for developing programs and
  155. new faculty, um, in the future, as I am plan
  156. to make this content available to directors of developing programs
  157. as they work on getting there adjunct faculty on board
  158. so the E.
  159. D. D.
  160. Will provide me with the credentials, the authority and the
  161. knowledge to be able to create really quality professional development
  162. and training programs for physical therapist assistant clinicians, P.
  163. T S M.
  164. p. T.
  165. A s who really want to become faculty in local
  166. PT assistant programs where maybe they haven't had the opportunity.
  167. I mean outlying areas to have had education or academic
  168. experience. As a social change agent, I really want to
  169. help them make the transition so that we can enhance
  170. and support the process of faculty development, especially those with
  171. online components.
  172. It's really important that online teaching is not only perceived
  173. as valuable and effective, but it's presented in a valuable
  174. and effective way for our students.
  175. So, in conclusion, by providing strong leadership and mentoring through
  176. a Siris of educational efforts and especially the Monday morning
  177. Mentoring and the Faculty Development Day followed up with some
  178. individual mentoring sessions, I really hope to develop a successful
  179. transition of PT and PTT assistant clinicians into effective in
  180. quality educators that meet Capt E approval, Um, the students,
  181. the profession and ultimately our patients are the ones who
  182. will receive the ultimate benefit.
  183. So here a couple of references, um, regarding the material,
  184. including the standards and required elements and the position papers
  185. by Captain thank you very much for your time and
  186. your attention
