00:01 - 00:02
Hello. Um
00:02 - 00:04
so my name is Matthew McClellan.
00:04 - 00:08
And we're gonna go through question to for this week's discussion,
00:08 - 00:13
uh the case study involving Yukon and raising tuition and it's
00:13 - 00:17
at the best policy and how else could we do this?
00:17 - 00:21
And how can we immediate rising costs and what was the, you know, extra spending,
00:21 - 00:23
all that, y'all all read this case study.
00:23 - 00:24
Um
00:24 - 00:28
So these are just some of my thoughts on
00:28 - 00:32
the case study and answer some of the questions that
00:33 - 00:35
that was posed to us and we'll go from there.
00:35 - 00:39
So what would I do if I was the CFO in this situation?
00:39 - 00:39
Well,
00:39 - 00:41
the first thing I would do is not sound quite
00:41 - 00:45
as terse and harsh as this particular author did.
00:45 - 00:50
It seemed to me that they focused right in on on what they deemed to
00:50 - 00:55
be extraneous costs and that raising tuition was
00:55 - 00:57
the first thing that they jumped to and
00:58 - 01:00
I wouldn't take that tone.
01:00 - 01:03
That's the first thing that I would do if I was the CFO in this situation.
01:03 - 01:07
The second thing that I might do is is actually look at those,
01:07 - 01:10
look at all the costs of the that the university is undertaking.
01:10 - 01:12
Look at all the expenditures.
01:12 - 01:18
Look at other ways that we can make up these budget shortfalls.
01:18 - 01:18
Um
01:19 - 01:25
it might involve cutting spending. It also involve raising tuition.
01:25 - 01:28
I don't think that I would take anything off the table
01:28 - 01:32
uh to begin with if I was in this situation.
01:32 - 01:36
Uh making the budget is an important thing and and
01:36 - 01:40
not narrowing in on one specific avenue I think is
01:40 - 01:44
how I would start handling this as the CFO.
01:51 - 01:54
Alright, uh does the case study offer any viable solutions?
01:54 - 01:57
Well, yeah, yeah, cutting back on spending absolutely.
01:57 - 02:01
Is a viable solution, is it the best solution?
02:01 - 02:04
Well, that's hard to say because I didn't look at you cons
02:04 - 02:05
ah
02:06 - 02:07
you know, I'm not in that situation.
02:07 - 02:10
Uh Do I think that there's a lot
02:10 - 02:14
of wasteful spending uh at higher education institutions?
02:14 - 02:18
Absolutely. Does some of that need to go away? Absolutely. Uh
02:19 - 02:21
Did it offer any solutions other than
02:23 - 02:24
cutting spending? Not really,
02:24 - 02:30
no, it really didn't. Um So I'm not sure that I really didn't think that this offered.
02:30 - 02:34
I wouldn't say that it's not viable because absolutely, again,
02:34 - 02:37
you can make up those cost differences by cutting spending all you want,
02:37 - 02:41
But does that impact the the mission of the university in such
02:41 - 02:45
a way that it is detrimental to the future of that university?
02:46 - 02:50
And when you hone in on one specific solution
02:50 - 02:55
and you don't allow for any flexibility in that?
02:55 - 02:57
I'm not sure that that's a viable solution?
02:57 - 03:02
Uh It will again meet the financial goals, but it may
03:03 - 03:04
at what cost
03:04 - 03:06
at what cost
03:06 - 03:08
does it meet those those solutions?
03:08 - 03:12
And is that the best course for the university to to go down?
03:12 - 03:17
I just don't think that that's the case in in this particular instance.
03:20 - 03:24
So what additional solutions would I propose if I were the CFO?
03:24 - 03:26
Well, the first thing would be,
03:26 - 03:29
I would look at some of those expenditures do they fall
03:29 - 03:32
in line with what the mission of the university is.
03:32 - 03:36
There's some things that just cost a lot of money and, and while the,
03:36 - 03:39
the impact may seem small to the outside,
03:39 - 03:44
it's a fundamental piece that that extends the university's mission.
03:44 - 03:51
And you have to look at that. Uh Maybe raising tuition is the best course of action. Um
03:52 - 03:57
but I would start to examine, I would look at the college's mission, I would look at
03:57 - 04:01
everything again, like I said at the beginning and nothing's off the table.
04:01 - 04:02
I wouldn't
04:03 - 04:07
Lock myself into 1, 1 place or another. Um
04:08 - 04:12
but then I would probably say, okay, let's look at reducing spending in some,
04:12 - 04:13
some other places.
04:13 - 04:16
Let's see what we can do to um
04:17 - 04:20
Maybe we, we let some of the naturally occurring attrition,
04:20 - 04:23
people retiring that were higher salaries,
04:23 - 04:27
we can hire replacements in a lower cost or let
04:27 - 04:30
those positions sit vacant for for a little while.
04:30 - 04:36
I would look at some other cost saving measures along with raising tuition um
04:37 - 04:40
go to the state legislatures and asked for more money.
04:40 - 04:44
Look for more grants, encourage faculty members to, to go for more grants.
04:44 - 04:50
All of those things would come into play. If I were the CFO there, I would certainly,
04:51 - 04:51
it
04:52 - 04:52
is,
04:53 - 04:54
I was just really taking,
04:54 - 04:56
taking back in this this case study of just how quickly
04:56 - 05:00
they jumped on reduced spending and raising tuition was was bad.
05:00 - 05:04
I was just taken aback by just how quickly they jumped on that.
05:04 - 05:05
Um,
05:05 - 05:07
anyway, some of my thoughts for this,
05:07 - 05:10
uh looking forward to hearing from some of the rest of you and
05:11 - 05:14
see what you all thought about all this. So, thank you very much.
