  1. Hi. My name's Chris of the oils, and I decided
  2. to do my research project on thyroid cancer, which is
  3. what Hazel Grace, the main character, had throughout the The
  4. doctor starts.
  5. So this is the science behind.
  6. They're worried.
  7. And thyroid cancer kind of, um, thyroid cancer is really
  8. rare. There's been less than 200,000 cases yearly in the
  9. U. S.
  10. Alone. Symptoms don't usually come early on, but there could
  11. still be good.
  12. Prognosis is and outcomes.
  13. Usually the thyroid gland sits at the bottom or the
  14. base. I should say of the neck.
  15. Um, it's really important because it plays a part in
  16. the end a cried system, which controls hormones and your
  17. metabolism, your blood pressure, your body temperature, your heart rate,
  18. all that kind of important stuff.
  19. It controls all of that in your body, the whole
  20. system. So there's a few different kinds of thyroid cells
  21. that are important to know because each different kind of
  22. sale come from it causes a different kind of cancer.
  23. The first kind is the follicular, so this cell is
  24. responsible for making iodine in um, making iodine in the
  25. blood to produce a thyroid hormones that would regulate the
  26. metabolism. So this particular self focused on regulating the metabolism.
  27. So the thing about this cell is that it can
  28. cause problems if there's too much or too little.
  29. Um, if there's too many follicular cells, it can cause,
  30. um, something called hyperthyroidism.
  31. And this could lead toa irregular heartbeat trouble sleeping, UM,
  32. weight loss and hunger at the same time.
  33. High high body temperatures and anxiety.
  34. Or maybe nervousness too little can cause hyperthyroidism, which can
  35. cause you feel really fatigue and weak, and your body
  36. just slows down slowly.
  37. You can also weight gain since your metabolism slowing down
  38. eso the next cell.
  39. The time of the next thyroid cell is a pair
  40. of follicular cell or also known a C cells.
  41. Um, the called C cells because they produce calcitonin and
  42. the calcitonin is what determines what how much calcium you
  43. make in your blood again.
  44. This is important because, um, these certain deficiencies is what
  45. leads to the cancer.
  46. Okay, so these air some less common thyroid cells.
  47. This on the left is a lymphocyte, and on the
  48. right is a struggle.
  49. So there is benign thyroid complications that people do think
  50. could be cancer when they see it as a patient,
  51. or it could just look like a mass.
  52. So it is scary.
  53. But most of the time these are benign.
  54. So on the left you see on the left you
  55. see a knife use going here whiter and what that
  56. means. Basically, it's the whole gland is swollen or enlarged,
  57. and not just one side or one lobe of it,
  58. but the whole gland on the right side.
  59. You see where it says Nagy ular.
  60. Those are little bumps.
  61. Nagy ular bumps on top of the glands, so it's
  62. not just enlarged, but there's also little bumps on top.
  63. This is just thyroid enlargement, also known as the um,
  64. and most of the time it's usually just caused by,
  65. ah, hormone imbalance.
  66. So so these air thyroid nodule similar to what I
  67. just said, Um, 32 to 3 out of 10 times
  68. at a 20.
  69. It can be cancerous.
  70. Um, but not in most cases it can cause hyperthyroidism,
  71. which is what I was just talking about where you
  72. could get the irregular heartbeat, the trouble, sleeping anxiety and
  73. weight loss.
  74. Um, so most of the NA jewels are just cysts
  75. that air filled with fluid or sport thyroid hormone fluid.
  76. Our Lloyd, um, solid modules are more of a bad
  77. sign or nah, jewels with less fluid, because those are
  78. more cancers.
  79. And that's what doctors worry about more is the solid
  80. masses. If the doctor sees that the nodule is benign,
  81. then you can leave it there.
  82. You can choose toe, um, having not have not not
  83. have surgery.
  84. And just watch it closely and make sure that it
  85. doesn't become bigger of a problem, because then you may
  86. have thio get treatment for it.
  87. So the three main types of thyroid cancer are different.
  88. Differentiated thyroid cancers.
  89. The first one is papillary eight out of 10 times.
  90. Um, if you have thyroid cancer, it's popular.
  91. Airy. It's the most common.
  92. Um often grows slowly and one gland rather than both.
  93. Usually it spreads to the lymph nodes or the throat,
  94. but even if it does, then you can still catch
  95. it and get it surgically removed.
  96. The prognosis for popular Ari is usually good.
  97. The next one is follicular cancer or follicular carcinoma or
  98. follicular Andrew carcinoma.
  99. Um, this one is the next closest, most common thyroid
  100. cancer. It's one of the 10 chances if you have
  101. thyroid cancer, that you have follicular cancer.
  102. Um, this is common in countries with less iodine.
  103. Resource is because follicular cancer comes from a political er
  104. deficiency, which is the thyroid hormones.
  105. Now, the thing about molecular cancer it probably won't spread
  106. to your lymph nodes, but it will most likely spread
  107. to your bones or your lungs, so prognosis isn't really
  108. as good as the popular cancer.
  109. But in some cases there is still really good, Um,
  110. outcomes. The last cancer, the Hertha or the Oxy feel
  111. Cell carcinoma, um, is very rare.
  112. It's a 3% chance of you getting it if you
  113. get thyroid cancer.
  114. Um, if there's not much resource resource is, they have
  115. found about it, and there's not much research they have,
  116. since it's hard to find and heard it to treat.
  117. Since it is harder to treat than the prognosis is
  118. also not, that's good.
  119. So this is modular thyroid carcinoma or MTC.
  120. Um, if you have thyroid cancer, the likeliness and you're
  121. getting this is 4%.
  122. MTC usually develops from T cells, and it can spread
  123. to your lymph nodes.
  124. your lungs and your liver.
  125. This this strain of thyroid cancer is harder to find.
  126. Anti treat.
  127. What we do know so far is that there's two
  128. kinds and it's sporadic and familiar.
  129. This four dick is eight out of 10, mostly what
  130. you will get if you have MTC.
  131. Um, it's not hereditary.
  132. You can't get it through your genetics, and it occurs
  133. mostly in adults.
  134. If you have sporadic MTC, you probably only have it
  135. in once one lobe of your thyroid em.
  136. If you have familial MTC, you had probably inherited 25
  137. out of 20 25% of the time.
  138. You have probably inherit today, um, you can develop it
  139. at a really young age and not know and come
  140. to find out when you're like a young adult or
  141. an adult, and it could bring your complications.
  142. This cancer usually comes in both lobes, so the next
  143. cancer is an A plastic or undifferentiated.
  144. Um, if you have thyroid cancer, the likeliness of you
  145. getting this cancer is 2%.
  146. It can be developed from untreated, papillary or follicular cancer
  147. and often spreads really quick toe other organs.
  148. Um, it comes really hard to treat.
  149. It's undifferentiated because although it does, um, it can grow
  150. from Philip Color and popular cancer, which is differentiated.
  151. It doesn't look the same.
  152. It doesn't look like normal thyroid cells.
  153. Um, there's also some less common thyroid cancers that are
  154. less than 4% likely.
  155. Thio, like you're less than 4% likely to carry if
  156. you get thyroid cancer.
  157. And that would be thyroid lymphomas, thyroid star comas and
  158. some other rare tumors.
  159. Um, that's my presentation on types of thyroid cancer.
