00:01 - 00:02
Hi,
00:02 - 00:06
so I am going to talk to you today about whether or not we are meeting the needs
00:06 - 00:09
of our students in the academic achievement center especially
00:09 - 00:14
as those have changed in the pandemic world.
00:14 - 00:18
Um So the first thing we need to do is talk about the program. So
00:19 - 00:21
um a brief description of the context.
00:21 - 00:26
So before covid um the academic achievement center was completely
00:26 - 00:32
in person resource but during the shutdowns um that obviously had
00:32 - 00:36
to change and we became almost entirely online presence with a
00:36 - 00:42
skeleton crew um that manned the physical in person campus um
00:42 - 00:47
uh Academic achievement center and that was frequented mostly by students
00:47 - 00:49
that had to be on campus such as student athletes.
00:49 - 00:53
And now in the fall of 2021 we have shifted that um
00:53 - 00:57
we're still offering online access but it is not dedicated support.
00:57 - 01:01
So before when you logged in you had a person who was only on
01:01 - 01:06
zoom uh to work with you and now Um for the most part,
01:06 - 01:09
if you log in it will be someone that
01:09 - 01:11
is also in the physical academic achievement center.
01:11 - 01:15
The exception to this is between the hours of 10 and two Monday through Friday.
01:15 - 01:19
Um So they there have been a lot of changes
01:19 - 01:22
in um the offerings of the academic achievement center,
01:22 - 01:26
the people that are typically served in the academic achievement center
01:26 - 01:30
are typically students that are academically um disadvantage not necessarily,
01:30 - 01:33
but there does tend to be a group
01:34 - 01:36
that needs a little bit more support.
01:36 - 01:41
This tends to be our students that are adult students um or continuing
01:41 - 01:46
education um are students who are speak english as a second language.
01:46 - 01:53
Um students who are also athletes and students with special education diagnoses
01:53 - 01:55
and this has to do with a lot of factors,
01:55 - 01:58
but one of which is that we house some of
01:58 - 02:01
our developmental education courses in the academic achievement center.
02:01 - 02:04
Um The supports that we offer,
02:04 - 02:08
we offer learning specialists which kind of do anything
02:08 - 02:11
that students come in um to the achievement center for
02:12 - 02:14
we also
02:14 - 02:18
of our reading specialists um these are people that also teach
02:18 - 02:22
the developmental reading courses um but help with textbook comprehension.
02:22 - 02:25
Um then we have an education specialist and
02:25 - 02:28
we have tutors for individual um support.
02:28 - 02:31
Um We offer drop in services for all
02:31 - 02:36
of those categories um individual tutoring um in for
02:36 - 02:37
just the tutors and for the deaf education
02:37 - 02:40
specialists offer one on one appointments for that.
02:40 - 02:45
Um There are smart starts which kind of helps students get um
02:45 - 02:49
a acclimated to campus and that's run by our learning specialists
02:49 - 02:52
and then um like areas that are reading specialists
02:52 - 02:55
in deaf education specialists offer services as well.
02:56 - 02:56
So
02:57 - 02:58
um
02:59 - 03:04
in addition to that the stage of development that we would be in right now,
03:04 - 03:09
I'm going to talk about it kind of into two areas are Logic model is for if we
03:09 - 03:14
need to implement um new services but before we do any of that we would need to submit,
03:14 - 03:19
we need to have a survey to see if the services that we are currently utilizing um
03:19 - 03:21
are offering are being utilized and are being are
03:21 - 03:25
effective before we recommend any sort of interventions.
03:25 - 03:30
Um but then we would need to have a follow up survey to see if we
03:30 - 03:33
have any increase in um the way that
03:33 - 03:38
students are responding to and viewing our services.
03:38 - 03:43
So this is the logic model here. Um what
03:44 - 03:47
we're looking at is this is as if we got the
03:47 - 03:51
first survey results back but they were not necessarily positive.
03:51 - 03:55
Um and so that would mean what what interventions
03:55 - 03:59
we think we could potentially have to be um
03:59 - 04:00
uh utilizing here.
04:00 - 04:03
So that would be more uh dedicated
04:03 - 04:07
online support um which would and potentially adding
04:07 - 04:11
individual one on one appointments um for students
04:11 - 04:13
for with the learning specialist as well.
04:13 - 04:17
Um and this would require a technology support in addition,
04:17 - 04:22
um we would need to be tracking some of their participation,
04:22 - 04:24
whether students are actually using these services
04:24 - 04:26
and what services they are using.
04:26 - 04:29
Um and we can track a lot of that through a.
04:29 - 04:30
Q campus Loggins,
04:30 - 04:33
um both in our online and our physical
04:33 - 04:36
academic achievement center through there are scanned IEDs.
04:36 - 04:40
So the short term goals obviously would be to make
04:40 - 04:44
sure that students who need um support are getting it
04:44 - 04:47
and that they have a positive experience with
04:47 - 04:52
uh that support so that the services are actually meeting their needs um and that the
04:52 - 04:56
students that are in remote settings are getting the support that they need as well.
04:56 - 05:00
Um The idea is that the support will increase students
05:00 - 05:06
grades um which will also increase students um feelings of empowerment
05:07 - 05:10
and long term what we hope will happen is that these
05:10 - 05:13
increases will lead to increased persistence
05:13 - 05:15
and then therefore graduation rates.
05:15 - 05:20
Um and that students graduating from the college will have a positive um
05:21 - 05:27
uh experience with the college that they will uh filter into the community
05:27 - 05:31
as well as into any sort of exit surveys that we have.
05:32 - 05:39
So um the next thing that we need to talk about is the evaluation design.
05:39 - 05:42
So um the first thing we need to talk about is the purpose,
05:42 - 05:46
so the mission of the college is one of them is to
05:46 - 05:50
respond to the needs of our students and community through relevant offerings.
05:50 - 05:55
And so the way to do that um is also through through the tutoring center here.
05:55 - 06:00
Um and so it's a it's important that we're meeting not just most students needs,
06:00 - 06:01
but every students need.
06:01 - 06:04
And so in that particularly is important for some
06:04 - 06:07
of our disadvantaged populations that the academic achievement center
06:07 - 06:10
tends to serve and those populations tend to be
06:10 - 06:12
more at risk also when they are online,
06:12 - 06:13
only
06:13 - 06:17
the type of um evaluation that we would do would be a
06:17 - 06:20
formative evaluation because the academic achievement
06:20 - 06:23
center is an ongoing um process,
06:23 - 06:24
right?
06:24 - 06:26
It's it's been in progress.
06:26 - 06:28
So this would be formative um more than
06:28 - 06:31
they and monitoring because things have been changing.
06:31 - 06:37
So we need to see if those um if those changes are positive um
06:37 - 06:38
find the strengths and weaknesses of those
06:38 - 06:41
of those changes and make adjustments accordingly.
06:41 - 06:45
Um And I would say that our approach would be a developmental
06:45 - 06:51
evaluation approach um in that we are looking for um empowering learning
06:51 - 06:56
for us and for um the staff members um for making continuous
06:56 - 07:00
improvement and refinement to the services that are offered as well.
07:01 - 07:04
So the stakeholders um there's three main groups here.
07:04 - 07:06
We've got administration staff and students.
07:06 - 07:10
The administration is important um in that they're making the decisions.
07:10 - 07:11
This would be the board.
07:11 - 07:14
Um This would be our Dean of Academic Support and
07:14 - 07:18
our director um would be the main main players there.
07:18 - 07:21
The staff would be all the groups that I mentioned before.
07:21 - 07:22
Learning specialist reading specialist,
07:22 - 07:25
deaf education specialist sent tutors and then the students would
07:25 - 07:28
be in the um the general group of students,
07:28 - 07:29
but particularly in those subgroups,
07:29 - 07:31
we want to make sure that they are being served as well.
07:32 - 07:38
So in order to get their feedback, um get their buy in.
07:38 - 07:41
We would need to have a representative board um
07:41 - 07:44
that would have students um students on it,
07:44 - 07:49
hopefully students from at least one um
07:49 - 07:51
of those demographics.
07:51 - 07:57
So adult students ap students, special education students and student athletes.
07:57 - 08:00
Um Student would be nice to have have a representative of
08:00 - 08:03
each one or people that that identifies more than one?
08:03 - 08:05
Um staff a learning specialist,
08:05 - 08:08
reading specialist tutor and the deaf education specialist.
08:08 - 08:12
And then our director should serve on this board as well. The
08:13 - 08:18
it would be nice to have more administrative support but it would be a problem
08:18 - 08:23
as far as um getting getting honest feedback because if we bring in the Dean,
08:23 - 08:25
if we bring in someone from the board that might
08:25 - 08:30
be something that would hinder um some transparency there.
08:30 - 08:33
So the board's role would be um in
08:33 - 08:36
the planning process in evaluating the logic model,
08:36 - 08:41
evaluating what outcomes um what activities and inputs we're gonna put in um
08:41 - 08:46
in order and that would obviously be done after doing that pre survey.
08:46 - 08:49
Um And then making sure we have evaluated the survey
08:49 - 08:51
to make sure
08:51 - 08:54
that it is asking what we're what we want
08:54 - 08:56
to ask um and that there's nothing overlooked.
08:56 - 09:00
And then of course reflecting afterwards on the data um and making sure that
09:00 - 09:05
that data um is reported out and that something is done with that data.
09:06 - 09:13
Um So then the evaluation questions I have three um obviously the board would weigh
09:13 - 09:16
in on these but um one would be when getting help in the A.
09:16 - 09:19
C. Do students feel comfortable asking for help?
09:20 - 09:22
Feel confident in the help that they have received and feel that
09:22 - 09:26
the help is making impact on their grades on their overall outcomes.
09:26 - 09:31
Um Is it meeting the needs of the river of diverse learners? And is the A.
09:31 - 09:36
C adequately accessible? Is the the times that students need the A. C. Is it open?
09:36 - 09:41
Um And I think it's important to look at these both in person and online so that
09:41 - 09:43
there is a contrasting variable here so we can
09:43 - 09:46
see not only what what we're doing but if
09:46 - 09:48
if we're meeting it on both ends
09:48 - 09:49
um there.
09:50 - 09:52
Um So that's the evaluation design
09:52 - 09:54
the data collection. So
09:55 - 09:59
we would need to look at this as far as methods.
09:59 - 10:02
The method that I would choose would be an online survey.
10:02 - 10:03
This would be something that could be sent to
10:03 - 10:07
students after they have logged in um to the
10:07 - 10:09
academic achievement center so that we're getting students that
10:09 - 10:12
actually have experience with the academic achievement center.
10:12 - 10:18
It could also be something that are staff is um encouraging students to do.
10:18 - 10:25
I would recommend that once students take the survey they get um some sort of um
10:26 - 10:30
rewards such as like a free drink at the cafeteria or something something small.
10:30 - 10:33
Um But also something that could just be auto generated to
10:33 - 10:37
their email so that we can continue to have anonymity.
10:37 - 10:40
Um And that way we also wouldn't need an I. R. B.
10:41 - 10:43
The um
10:44 - 10:48
online is also important to know that we are getting the online
10:48 - 10:51
only students as well as not just the physical and persons students.
10:51 - 10:56
I would recommend doing a stratified sample so that we are not only getting
10:56 - 11:02
um a randomized selection but we are also making sure that that selection is
11:03 - 11:05
equally representative of the students that we serve.
11:05 - 11:10
So for serving um you know 25% student athletes
11:10 - 11:12
that we need to make sure that there's a 25%
11:12 - 11:15
representation of student athletes there.
11:15 - 11:18
Of course the limitation of this is also that students
11:18 - 11:21
who have never used the services services of the A.
11:21 - 11:24
C. Are not represented and obviously those are students that we
11:24 - 11:28
I also want to represent but I think for
11:28 - 11:31
the purposes of this evaluation we have to just narrow
11:31 - 11:33
it in on students who are actually using the services
11:33 - 11:36
and that could be a question for another day.
11:36 - 11:41
Um So as far as the relationship to the evaluation questions,
11:41 - 11:44
the survey itself that I designed
11:44 - 11:45
is
11:45 - 11:49
Um one that does have does ask
11:49 - 11:52
questions specifically about those metrics,
11:52 - 11:54
whether students are feeling heard whether
11:54 - 11:56
students are feeling successful and whether
11:56 - 12:01
students are feeling like they have adequate access among other things.
12:01 - 12:03
So as far as analysis
12:04 - 12:09
Um there most of the questions are um using a liquid scale.
12:09 - 12:12
Um so scores of 1-2 which are strongly
12:12 - 12:16
agree and agree would indicate success threes would indicate
12:16 - 12:18
an area for improvement in a four or
12:18 - 12:20
five would indicate indicate an area of weakness.
12:21 - 12:21
Um
12:22 - 12:28
All of the data would be sorted into um whether there is a
12:28 - 12:32
representative degree of access all those categories that we talked about before,
12:32 - 12:35
as far as the evaluation questions and it would need
12:35 - 12:38
to be sorted by the population of the respondent.
12:38 - 12:43
Do each of these um populations feel similarly or is there a difference?
12:43 - 12:48
Um If the students use the services a lot um do they
12:48 - 12:52
feel you know strong more strongly or more negatively about certain things?
12:52 - 12:55
Um And then what services they are using?
12:55 - 12:59
Um And then what instructors they're using as well because
12:59 - 13:02
that can also tell us a little bit about um
13:02 - 13:05
the strengths and weaknesses of our staffing and then whether there's
13:05 - 13:11
a difference between our online and our our in person students.
13:11 - 13:16
Um So the primary evaluators role would be to conduct board meetings,
13:16 - 13:19
distribute surveys and collect data basically do the evaluation
13:19 - 13:23
um where the board of stakeholders is going to help
13:23 - 13:27
um dr the focus of the evaluation look at um
13:27 - 13:30
review the surveys and the data and make sure that
13:31 - 13:33
there's not any holes and then it's saying what
13:33 - 13:35
we want to determine what to report out.
13:35 - 13:38
And then of course our administration gets to make decisions
13:38 - 13:41
about um whether or not they're going to take our recommendations
13:42 - 13:44
and then finally communication reporting.
13:44 - 13:47
So the report then of course has to go to administration.
13:47 - 13:49
The board needs to report,
13:49 - 13:53
create a presentation in a report with recommendations based on the
13:53 - 13:58
findings which may include increasing hours or um individual appointments,
13:58 - 14:00
whatever the survey finds.
14:01 - 14:03
And then the staff needs a report as well.
14:03 - 14:09
Um That that is going to be a smaller report that just has the pertinent findings.
14:09 - 14:12
Um The things that are important to the staff and this could be in the
14:12 - 14:16
form of like an infographic that it could be distributed at their biannual meeting.
14:16 - 14:20
Um That way that um they're getting the data that
14:20 - 14:24
they need but they're not being overwhelmed with the overall
14:25 - 14:25
deal.
14:26 - 14:29
Okay so I feel like that was a lot of information in a very short amount of time.
14:29 - 14:36
Um But those are the highlights of those um those areas. Um
14:36 - 14:40
And I hope that you have found it eliminated. Thanks.
