00:00 - 00:02
Hello, everyone, and thank you so much for joining me
00:03 - 00:03
for today's Webinar.
00:03 - 00:05
My name is Anna Evil, and I work here in
00:05 - 00:08
the social media marketing department for the MLB, and I'm
00:08 - 00:09
super excited to share with you guys.
00:10 - 00:13
Some sure fire social media strategies for success in our
00:13 - 00:14
upcoming seasons here at the MLB.
00:16 - 00:16
Let's go ahead and get started.
00:18 - 00:20
So how many of you guys out there use social
00:20 - 00:22
media? Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook?
00:22 - 00:24
Anything? I'm guessing it's a lot Sina's.
00:24 - 00:27
There are currently 3.5 billion social media users in the
00:27 - 00:28
world. Now.
00:28 - 00:31
This makes up almost 45% of the entire Earth's population,
00:32 - 00:33
and that is astounding now.
00:34 - 00:36
Currently on Instagram, one of the more popular platforms, the
00:37 - 00:40
MLB has 6.7 million followers, which seems like a lot
00:40 - 00:43
until you realized that Christiano Ronaldo, one of the more
00:43 - 00:46
famous soccer players in the world, has over 220 million
00:47 - 00:48
followers on his own personal account.
00:49 - 00:51
So how is it possible that one single person can
00:51 - 00:53
have so many more followers than an account devoted?
00:54 - 00:57
Two entire organization, an entire sport that just doesn't seem
00:57 - 00:58
right? That's the problem.
00:59 - 01:01
We have and that's what I'm going to work to
01:01 - 01:01
fix that X.
01:03 - 01:05
So, as a devoted fan of baseball and a consumer
01:06 - 01:09
of social media myself, I feel very confident in the
01:09 - 01:11
plan that I have set out for us and let's
01:11 - 01:12
go ahead and get into it.
01:14 - 01:16
So today I'm gonna go ahead and do a current
01:16 - 01:18
analysis of how we're doing and where we're falling short.
01:19 - 01:20
Then I'm gonna look at our competitors.
01:20 - 01:22
We're going to see what they're doing and where we
01:22 - 01:24
could maybe draw some inspiration from them.
01:24 - 01:26
Then I'll lay up next steps for us to implement.
01:27 - 01:28
And hopefully, by doing all of this, we're gonna find
01:29 - 01:31
some success in growing our social media presence.
01:32 - 01:36
So excuse me, we're gonna go ahead and start off
01:36 - 01:39
with the current analysis of how we're doing right now.
01:40 - 01:43
The MLB has accounts on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, ticktock
01:44 - 01:44
and YouTube.
01:45 - 01:46
So it seems like we've got all of our bases
01:46 - 01:47
covered right.
01:47 - 01:50
But unfortunately, we do not now if we go back
01:50 - 01:52
to what I was saying earlier, the MLB on INSTAGRAM,
01:53 - 01:56
currently a 6.7 million followers, and that's great until you
01:56 - 01:59
realize that the NFL has 18.9 million followers and the
01:59 - 02:00
N B.
02:00 - 02:02
A has a whopping 51.2 million followers.
02:03 - 02:05
So clearly we are falling short somewhere here.
02:06 - 02:09
I'm gonna go ahead and analyze some problems that I
02:09 - 02:11
think we're having so out of the top 30 athletic
02:12 - 02:14
team, um, Instagram accounts on Lee.
02:14 - 02:16
One of these is a baseball team, according to 90
02:16 - 02:16
minutes dot com.
02:17 - 02:19
Now shout out to the New York Yankees for pushing
02:19 - 02:20
your content and doing it right.
02:20 - 02:23
But for the other 29 individual teams, as well as
02:24 - 02:26
our main MLB account, we need to step it up,
02:26 - 02:27
and that's very obvious.
02:27 - 02:31
But just by the statistic, not only that, but another
02:31 - 02:33
problem we have is that Twitter is our most active
02:33 - 02:38
platform. Currently, Twitter is 330 million users, but then we
02:38 - 02:41
look at Instagram with over 500 million users and ticktock
02:42 - 02:43
that has over 800 million users.
02:45 - 02:47
Twitter is a dying platform, and we need to stop
02:48 - 02:51
pushing so much content on there and explore a new
02:51 - 02:51
platform opportunities.
02:52 - 02:54
This is how we're gonna ultimately grow as an organization
02:55 - 02:55
on social media.
02:57 - 03:00
So now that I've gone ahead and gone through where
03:00 - 03:01
we're maybe falling short of it.
03:01 - 03:03
Let's go ahead and look at our competitors and see
03:03 - 03:05
what they're doing well, and maybe where we can draw
03:05 - 03:07
some inspiration and learn from them.
03:08 - 03:10
So I'm gonna go ahead and start with the MBA.
03:11 - 03:13
The MBA is the most followed account of all professional
03:13 - 03:17
sports. They do an amazing job of posting highlights and
03:17 - 03:19
updates during their live games, keeping their fans up to
03:20 - 03:20
date with what's going on.
03:21 - 03:23
But they also use their account for more than basketball.
03:24 - 03:25
They promote many positive messages.
03:26 - 03:28
They post a lot about NBA Cares, which is their
03:28 - 03:32
charity, and they also post messages like this stand up
03:32 - 03:33
to bullying, support LGBT youth.
03:34 - 03:36
This is amazing, and it's something that a lot of
03:36 - 03:37
organizations are not doing yet.
03:38 - 03:40
But I definitely think we should hop on this train
03:40 - 03:41
and capitalize on this idea.
03:41 - 03:43
Use your platform for more than the sport.
03:44 - 03:46
Yeah, finally there players extremely personable.
03:47 - 03:48
The n B A.
03:48 - 03:50
Athletes are brought into social media, they're excited.
03:50 - 03:52
They wanna build connections with their fans that they simply
03:53 - 03:54
cannot have on the court on.
03:55 - 03:56
And if we could go ahead and get some of
03:57 - 03:59
this behind the scenes and off off court footage.
04:00 - 04:03
I think that we will build much stronger connections with
04:03 - 04:04
our fans.
04:05 - 04:07
So not only them, but I want to go ahead
04:07 - 04:09
and look more specifically at the Milwaukee Bucks.
04:10 - 04:12
So they have an incredible graphic design team.
04:13 - 04:13
They work overtime.
04:14 - 04:18
It is clear they post some really eye catching images
04:18 - 04:19
on their instagram.
04:19 - 04:23
And these graphics draw eyes, which draw likes these lead
04:23 - 04:25
to followers and followers ultimately lead to fans.
04:26 - 04:29
And that, of course, it's always the final man goal
04:29 - 04:30
of any organization.
04:32 - 04:33
Not only this, but just like the MBA.
04:34 - 04:37
The Bucks used there platforms as a way of being
04:37 - 04:40
activists. During this recent election season.
04:40 - 04:42
They have made sure that their fans know how to
04:43 - 04:45
vote in Wisconsin, and they always are asking, Are you
04:45 - 04:45
registered to vote?
04:46 - 04:49
Using their classic green and white Milwaukee Bucks colors, they
04:49 - 04:51
want to make sure their fans are involved in the
04:51 - 04:54
community. The Milwaukee Bucks are also really good about being
04:54 - 04:57
consistent with their posting schedule, whether they're in season or
04:57 - 04:57
off season.
04:58 - 05:00
The content it keeps flowing, they keep it consistent.
05:01 - 05:04
And this is what keeps people interested and following the
05:04 - 05:07
accounts. Finally, the Milwaukee Bucks are huge on tick tock.
05:08 - 05:09
They're always ready to hop on a new trend with
05:10 - 05:10
some really fun music.
05:11 - 05:13
And this is something that I think we really need
05:13 - 05:14
to focus on if we want to grow.
05:17 - 05:18
So now that we've gone ahead and done an analysis
05:19 - 05:22
of where we're falling short and where competitors are possibly
05:23 - 05:25
surpassing us, I wanna lay out three steps on how
05:25 - 05:26
we can improve.
05:27 - 05:29
First, we need to make sure we're keeping our content
05:29 - 05:32
fresh. Second, we need to make sure we tie in
05:32 - 05:34
our individual team accounts back to our main one and
05:34 - 05:36
third. We need to capitalize on tick tock.
05:38 - 05:40
So to keep our content fresh, we need to make
05:40 - 05:42
sure we have a great mixture of pictures, videos, graphics
05:43 - 05:44
and highlight reels.
05:44 - 05:46
So pictures and videos that's very basic.
05:46 - 05:48
That is, baseline social media, and we do that.
05:49 - 05:49
But we could do better.
05:51 - 05:53
We also have an incredible graphic design team, so let's
05:53 - 05:54
start utilizing them.
05:54 - 05:56
I know that they're just itching to show us some
05:57 - 05:59
really awesome content, and once they send it our way,
05:59 - 06:00
all we have to do is push it out there
06:01 - 06:03
and, like I said, really cool Graphic designs draw eyes
06:04 - 06:06
and that draws likes, which leads to followers, which ultimately
06:07 - 06:07
leads to fans.
06:08 - 06:09
And that is what we want.
06:10 - 06:12
Finally, we need to make sure that we're posting a
06:12 - 06:12
lot of highlight reels.
06:13 - 06:15
So baseball is not always thought of is the most
06:16 - 06:17
exciting or dynamic sport.
06:17 - 06:20
But you and I both know as devoted fans of
06:20 - 06:22
this sport that baseball can be just as exciting as
06:23 - 06:25
hockey, football, basketball or any other sport.
06:26 - 06:27
You just have to catch the right moments.
06:27 - 06:30
So if we're able to compile a highlight reel of
06:30 - 06:32
people making diving catch is hitting home runs and sliding
06:33 - 06:35
into home plate, people are going to see that baseball
06:36 - 06:38
is a dynamic sport and it can be exciting, and
06:38 - 06:39
that's something they should want to follow.
06:41 - 06:43
Now next, we need to make sure that we're, um,
06:44 - 06:47
tying our individual Instagram accounts back to our main one.
06:48 - 06:50
So what usually happens is people pick a favorite team
06:50 - 06:52
and then they just want to follow that team.
06:52 - 06:54
And while that is great, our ultimate goal here is
06:54 - 06:58
to build a baseball community and MLB family if you
06:58 - 07:00
will. So we want to make sure that each of
07:00 - 07:04
our individual teams are tagging, mentioning and interacting with the
07:04 - 07:06
MLB main account in any way that we can.
07:06 - 07:09
This is gonna promote not only each account, but also
07:10 - 07:12
it's going to help our organization just grow and expand
07:13 - 07:13
and find new audiences.
07:15 - 07:17
Not finally, we need to capitalize on tick tock.
07:18 - 07:20
Let me go ahead and repeat the statistic for you.
07:20 - 07:21
From overload dot com.
07:22 - 07:24
They have 800 million users.
07:25 - 07:27
If that's not enough evidence for you, I'll continue.
07:28 - 07:29
Tick Tock has a very young demographic.
07:30 - 07:33
Over 64% of their main demographic is 13 to 24
07:34 - 07:34
year olds.
07:35 - 07:37
Now these kids are still impressionable.
07:37 - 07:40
There's still room for baseball, in their hearts and in
07:40 - 07:40
their lives.
07:40 - 07:42
And if we have to do a couple tic tac
07:42 - 07:44
dances, air trends toe whittle our way in there.
07:45 - 07:46
We're going to do it.
07:46 - 07:49
Not only that, but Tick Tock has unlimited content ideas.
07:50 - 07:52
There are trends that circulate around the app, and all
07:52 - 07:54
we have to do is be ready to hop on
07:54 - 07:57
them. And once we do, our our audience will inevitably
07:58 - 08:00
grow just by putting ourselves out there.
08:01 - 08:06
Finally, Ticktock offers an incredible behind the scenes look at
08:06 - 08:10
the sport, as well as offering personal connections to be
08:10 - 08:10
made with fans.
08:12 - 08:15
So now that I've gone ahead and told you what,
08:15 - 08:18
we're kind of falling short with, what our competitors are
08:18 - 08:20
doing better than us and what our next steps are,
08:20 - 08:23
Thio find some success in the upcoming season.
08:23 - 08:25
All that's left to do is implement, um, and strive
08:26 - 08:29
for growth, because I see no reason why 2021 can't
08:29 - 08:32
be the year that the MLB breaks the Internet.
08:33 - 08:35
Thank you so much for joining me today, and I
08:35 - 08:37
hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day.
