00:01 - 00:01
Hi guys,
00:01 - 00:03
my name is Gary Haas and I will be talking
00:03 - 00:07
about the effects of social media on today's society.
00:07 - 00:08
Um
00:09 - 00:17
Social media has become a giant thing in everyone's lives and I just wanted to kind of
00:17 - 00:19
shed the light on the things that most people don't
00:19 - 00:22
talk about because social media seems to be this fun,
00:22 - 00:23
amazing, great place,
00:23 - 00:25
which it is because you can connect with so
00:25 - 00:28
many people but there's also so many negative sides.
00:29 - 00:32
So first we're gonna start off with the types
00:32 - 00:35
of social media and the types of social media.
00:35 - 00:38
These just range between all the different types.
00:38 - 00:41
They're all owned basically by the same person, which is facebook, facebook
00:42 - 00:43
was
00:43 - 00:44
the original
00:45 - 00:50
social media page after Myspace and then facebook came
00:50 - 00:52
around and once facebook came around there was instagram,
00:52 - 00:55
Snapchat, twitter, facebook, Tiktok
00:56 - 01:00
read it. Um Youtube, just so many different types of
01:01 - 01:06
different ways to put out content in different formats. And
01:07 - 01:07
it,
01:08 - 01:12
I think that social media took off more
01:14 - 01:18
than what people were expecting it to. I would think it's become way
01:19 - 01:24
a much more bigger part of our lives than anyone thought that it would.
01:26 - 01:26
Yeah,
01:27 - 01:30
so the effects of social media, there's negative and positive effects.
01:30 - 01:33
We're gonna start with the positive effects because let's be honest,
01:33 - 01:36
we all have facebook, we all have instagram, we all have Snapchat,
01:37 - 01:38
it's,
01:38 - 01:40
we all do it, we all have social media.
01:40 - 01:43
So the positive, it's very quick global connections,
01:43 - 01:45
they create many jobs throughout,
01:45 - 01:48
through influencing and this means if you look at
01:48 - 01:50
the bottom right hand corner of the red pictures,
01:50 - 01:51
all the faces.
01:51 - 01:55
These are all social media influencers, actors, music
01:56 - 02:01
musicians, gamers, Youtubers just models.
02:01 - 02:08
These are all people who basically have built a platform on social media and
02:08 - 02:15
are now able to monetize that and they get offers from amazon and walmart and
02:16 - 02:19
all these different places to promote their products because
02:20 - 02:22
as we'll get into later, what
02:22 - 02:26
most companies started to realize what social media
02:26 - 02:30
influencers started to promote their products was that
02:30 - 02:33
it was a way cheaper way of advertising
02:33 - 02:37
than doing commercials or newspapers or anything like that
02:37 - 02:42
because all you have to do is send a free product to somebody and tell them
02:42 - 02:44
to show their followers and tell their followers
02:44 - 02:46
and you would be surprised at the amount of
02:46 - 02:50
products that are sold once someone
02:51 - 02:53
on social media shows it
02:54 - 02:57
um it's an outlet for a very creative expression
02:58 - 03:03
um through different types of music, different types of video styles, comedy,
03:04 - 03:09
um drama, just there's so many ways to
03:09 - 03:15
express yourself creatively on the internet and on social media. Um
03:15 - 03:21
not only can you create yourself, but you can literally do anything social media is,
03:21 - 03:25
it's the internet, the internet is everything and anything you can
03:26 - 03:29
go on twitter and find out what's going on today,
03:29 - 03:33
you can go on instagram and see if someone went with the
03:33 - 03:36
concert that you want to go to was like you can,
03:36 - 03:41
especially twitter, that is the place where most people, younger people,
03:41 - 03:43
I should say get there
03:44 - 03:45
news,
03:45 - 03:49
some of it's fake news, some of its real news, but twitter is so fast.
03:49 - 03:53
Everything through social media is just so, so, so fast
03:54 - 03:57
now the negative attributes
03:58 - 04:03
because of people promoting their lives. There's a lot of times
04:05 - 04:06
lies in that
04:07 - 04:14
not everybody is flying around on jets and purchasing Luton and all of this stuff,
04:14 - 04:16
this is a facade.
04:16 - 04:17
It's a face.
04:17 - 04:20
It's to promote that they are living this amazing
04:20 - 04:21
lifestyle that you'll never be able to obtain.
04:21 - 04:22
That's just false.
04:23 - 04:28
A lot of the people, they just show what they want to show and
04:28 - 04:33
it causes problems for a lot of people like eating a eating problem
04:33 - 04:37
disorders, body dysmorphia, depression, anxiety.
04:37 - 04:40
Um you can end up isolating yourself
04:41 - 04:46
all of these things relate back to cyber bullying on the internet,
04:47 - 04:50
there's people like in the top picture, I want to be thin,
04:50 - 04:55
I'll never look like that because you are able to comment on somebody's
04:56 - 04:59
page or on somebody's content
04:59 - 05:01
under a
05:01 - 05:06
discrete profile and nobody can really know who you are. It's not face to face.
05:06 - 05:11
People get very bold and they just want to hurt people and
05:12 - 05:18
the majority of the time, social media can be an extremely negative space
05:19 - 05:21
now cancel culture,
05:22 - 05:23
cancel culture.
05:23 - 05:25
I put under negative attributes but it can
05:25 - 05:28
also be a positive because there are sometimes when
05:28 - 05:34
people do need to be held accountable and shown what's right and shown how to change,
05:34 - 05:37
but once that person changes,
05:38 - 05:40
you need to accept it.
05:41 - 05:43
There's no,
05:43 - 05:46
here's an example, Jeffrey star, he's a makeup artist.
05:46 - 05:49
He said some very racial bad things back in the day.
05:50 - 05:54
He has apologized multiple times for it because it continuously being
05:54 - 05:57
brought up and he has now said that he has changed.
05:57 - 05:59
He didn't know who that person was.
05:59 - 06:03
That person was just anxious and dangerous and just,
06:03 - 06:07
he just said that person was, was sad and alone and didn't know what to do.
06:07 - 06:09
So they just fought back.
06:09 - 06:14
Um, but now he's changed and he literally does everything for the black community.
06:14 - 06:17
He does, he does so much. So
06:17 - 06:18
I,
06:19 - 06:22
I like to, if someone does get canceled,
06:23 - 06:28
I like to, if they prove that they have changed then let them change.
06:28 - 06:31
That's the whole point of cancel culture is to prove,
06:31 - 06:37
is to teach people and allow them to change, not to completely just shut them off,
06:37 - 06:39
ruin their lives, destroy them.
06:39 - 06:40
That is
06:42 - 06:45
the extreme negative sides of social media
06:46 - 06:51
Now onto the chart. Social Media has taken over.
06:51 - 06:56
You can see in 2004 way less, probably about
06:56 - 06:58
100 million people, maybe even zero.
06:59 - 07:02
I think zero people were using social media in 2004
07:02 - 07:06
All the way from 2004 to 2018,
07:08 - 07:08
two
07:09 - 07:10
billion
07:10 - 07:11
people
07:12 - 07:14
Over two billion people are on Facebook
07:15 - 07:18
Over 1.5 billion year on YouTube
07:18 - 07:20
Over one billionaire on Instagram.
07:22 - 07:25
The growth in social media has been
07:26 - 07:30
astronomical and everything has moved so fast,
07:30 - 07:34
especially with the new technology we're getting and the updated cameras and
07:35 - 07:38
it's social media has
07:38 - 07:39
absolutely
07:40 - 07:41
taken over
07:44 - 07:45
now because
07:45 - 07:50
social media has taken over. It has created it basically, its own culture.
07:50 - 07:54
So represented by the pearl necklace.
07:54 - 07:57
That is basically everything that when you
07:57 - 08:00
watch an influencer or you watch somebody on
08:00 - 08:03
instagram, Tiktok, facebook, whatever
08:04 - 08:10
and they have a product on that you that it's just, it's become a trendy thing
08:10 - 08:15
that everyone wants to have. That is what social media has kind of
08:15 - 08:23
berthed is trends. They know how to get one person on it and then get everyone on it.
08:24 - 08:28
Um, speaking of trends, the picture to the right of the flames and the smiley faces,
08:28 - 08:33
those are streaks on Snapchat and once streaks on Snapchat were introduced that
08:33 - 08:38
basically brought Snapchat made had made it a daily thing in your life,
08:38 - 08:42
which is what social media tries to do is they make everything a daily thing.
08:43 - 08:45
They want you to wake up, go on social media,
08:45 - 08:50
go to your on the toilet, go to social media, you're eating, go to social media,
08:50 - 08:53
you're in the shower, go to social media, watch youtube video.
08:53 - 08:54
You know,
08:54 - 08:56
also it's social media wants to draw you in
08:56 - 08:58
and they'll do everything they can to do it,
08:58 - 09:00
which is fine because it's great. But it's also bad.
09:00 - 09:01
Yeah,
09:01 - 09:02
there's a video.
09:02 - 09:04
There's the Tiktok dances,
09:04 - 09:07
all the dances that have gone crazy because of social media,
09:07 - 09:11
veganism and eating just eating healthy and taking care of yourself.
09:11 - 09:12
Working out.
09:12 - 09:14
People always put on these fronts of working out
09:14 - 09:16
and waking up at six a.m. Every day and
09:17 - 09:21
going to work out and walking their dog and being fun. Um, okay.
09:23 - 09:27
And now vegans, everyone like you're not supposed to mean bad.
09:28 - 09:30
Everyone's two faced on the internet.
09:30 - 09:34
They show one thing what they really mean another, they're also investigators.
09:34 - 09:38
They once cancel, culture gets in there, they investigate, they get in their heart
09:39 - 09:44
and they do not stop and not quit until you are destroyed, likes and dislikes.
09:44 - 09:47
The amount of likes on a photo should not determine how
09:47 - 09:49
you feel about yourself or what you think about yourself.
09:49 - 09:51
But it does for many, many,
09:51 - 09:57
many people and that is one of the many negative side effects of social media.
09:57 - 10:01
Amazon amazon is just on there because those are one of the stores that
10:01 - 10:05
advertising has just become such a big thing on social media,
10:05 - 10:06
especially with amazon,
10:06 - 10:10
all these influencers can just make a wish list and whoever buys off of there,
10:10 - 10:12
the influencer gets half the money.
10:12 - 10:16
There's just so many different ways for social media to explode and
10:17 - 10:18
become this great and amazing thing.
10:18 - 10:24
But then you go down to the last bottom picture in its Photoshop. It's face tuned.
10:24 - 10:28
It's altering yourself to look like you're not to make you look like
10:28 - 10:32
what society thinks a perfect person looks like and nobody looks like that
10:33 - 10:34
at all.
10:36 - 10:37
Yeah,
10:38 - 10:40
to understand social media, you watch this video,
10:40 - 10:44
it's basically this young girl and she explains
10:45 - 10:48
what social media is, why it's so important to everybody,
10:48 - 10:49
why it's an everyday thing.
10:51 - 10:52
So please go back and watch.
10:53 - 10:53
Mhm.
10:54 - 10:54
So
10:55 - 10:58
how to how to stop instagram, How to stop social media?
10:58 - 11:01
Delete it if you're having anxiety, if you're having depression,
11:01 - 11:06
if you're isolating yourself, there are studies that prove that social media
11:07 - 11:11
and Snapchat instagram facebook, they all just make it worse.
11:12 - 11:14
Nothing on social media is real.
11:15 - 11:19
It is all fake. You live your life, You have fun
11:21 - 11:22
and be yourself.
11:24 - 11:26
Thank you so much for watching.
11:27 - 11:29
Now I'm going to shut down my ipad
11:29 - 11:31
and get off social media.
