00:02 - 00:08
Hi everyone. My name is jen call cursed and I am one of the first aid coordinators.
00:08 - 00:10
I'm working with Lucas Tremor, our First Aid director
00:11 - 00:15
today. I'm going to provide a high level overview of our first aid manual.
00:16 - 00:20
Um This is again just an overview. So we ask that you take the time
00:20 - 00:23
to review the manual and
00:24 - 00:26
become familiar with um
00:26 - 00:29
the contents of it. All right.
00:29 - 00:31
So we have three sections we're going to
00:31 - 00:34
cover today and that's requirements and expectations,
00:34 - 00:36
scope and responsibility
00:36 - 00:38
and First Aid response
00:39 - 00:42
requirements and expectations.
00:43 - 00:45
So our first requirement is
00:46 - 00:48
our our first aid requirements.
00:48 - 00:52
We expect all first aid responders to have Cpr with A. D.
00:52 - 00:55
And that can range from community
00:55 - 00:58
C. P. R. With a D. Training,
00:58 - 01:00
basic life support, whatever
01:01 - 01:04
uh is required, you know, for your level of practice.
01:04 - 01:08
But just make sure when you complete these courses that they include the E. D.
01:08 - 01:12
Portion. As that is one of the requirements.
01:12 - 01:17
As we have a E. D. S at Western heirs. Also First Aid.
01:17 - 01:19
If you are not a healthcare provider
01:19 - 01:21
or formally trained in first Aid.
01:21 - 01:27
The Red Cross first Aid course available online is an excellent
01:28 - 01:30
I'm training for first Aid at Westerners.
01:30 - 01:35
A lot of our protocols are based on the Red Cross first aid response
01:36 - 01:42
and this will allow you to respond to most of the first aid emergencies that happen.
01:43 - 01:44
Finally,
01:44 - 01:47
we require concussion training and that's actually required for
01:47 - 01:52
all first aid responders because this is a standardized practice
01:52 - 01:55
that we would like to be applied to all
01:55 - 01:59
teams and writers regardless of what team you're on.
01:59 - 02:03
And by having a consistent concussion protocol, we are able to
02:04 - 02:06
um maintain that high level
02:06 - 02:11
of of screening and just um compliance with that.
02:13 - 02:17
And we do require that these are completed within six months.
02:17 - 02:20
If you need help with accessing any of these
02:20 - 02:25
trainings, just please contact myself jen cal course or Lucas trimmer.
02:25 - 02:28
We can connect you with community resources.
02:28 - 02:32
We are going to be entering into show season rather soon. So
02:32 - 02:34
um these must be
02:35 - 02:38
completed before you are able to sign up for shows,
02:39 - 02:43
just because of the types of emergencies we typically see around that.
02:44 - 02:48
So some other um following guidelines. Um we just
02:48 - 02:49
um
02:49 - 02:52
These expectations are for all first aid providers,
02:52 - 02:57
whether you've been in Western airs for 4050 years and been
02:57 - 03:00
doing first aid or if this is your first year with us
03:01 - 03:01
and
03:02 - 03:02
we
03:02 - 03:04
want to thank you first of all for
03:05 - 03:08
stepping up to this role. It's one of the best volunteer
03:08 - 03:11
and positions you can have within Western airs.
03:11 - 03:15
And if you have any questions or concerns about this first Aid manual,
03:15 - 03:20
we just ask that you contact a member of the First Aid leadership team.
03:20 - 03:25
We worked to standardize these protocols with evidence based
03:26 - 03:26
um
03:27 - 03:33
evidence based research from CDC from red Cross american Heart Association.
03:33 - 03:35
We also have a vetted
03:35 - 03:38
concussion protocol that we will be using.
03:38 - 03:42
So if you have concerns um the best place to start is with us.
03:46 - 03:47
All right,
03:48 - 03:51
so the next section I'm going to cover is communication.
03:52 - 03:57
Uh We require that all of our first aid volunteers have a google account.
03:58 - 04:00
Um This just allows you to
04:01 - 04:05
um sign up to receive changes. That's where our weekly calls are going to go out.
04:05 - 04:10
But having that google account does make the process easier for you.
04:10 - 04:14
And that's um we're using the google platform for our communication.
04:15 - 04:16
If you have any questions about
04:17 - 04:20
um creating a google account or what that might mean for you,
04:20 - 04:23
please feel free to contact one of us.
04:23 - 04:26
Our first aid manual will be on a google doc and most of the
04:26 - 04:31
time you are required to have an account to um to view it.
04:34 - 04:39
Alright. And finally, on this section, um attendance.
04:39 - 04:44
Um if your team's working with horses per se, it is expected to attend.
04:44 - 04:47
So that would include your team rides,
04:47 - 04:48
um
04:48 - 04:49
shows.
04:49 - 04:49
You know,
04:49 - 04:54
we have a variety of shows and we'll be communicating more on that um as
04:54 - 05:01
they come up with like needs and coverage also present for grooming and unsettling.
05:01 - 05:02
So if you are a writer
05:03 - 05:07
is part of the rental string, we would really appreciate having first aid present.
05:07 - 05:10
That just reduces the extra lift that's placed
05:10 - 05:14
on Wranglers um when first aid needs arise
05:14 - 05:15
during the
05:15 - 05:19
um saddling and unsettling process also um during
05:19 - 05:22
the summer and early fall we have parades
05:22 - 05:28
um with owners horses going um and we'll be looking for first aid to help,
05:29 - 05:30
would that coverage as well?
05:30 - 05:35
Um finally with attendance, if you're not going to be present for your ride,
05:35 - 05:40
please contact um Lucas as well as your monitor.
05:40 - 05:44
So we can work to um, get coverage for that.
05:51 - 05:58
Alright, so moving on to um, scope and responsibility um, with scope,
05:58 - 06:02
it is imperative that you do not provide care outside of your skill and knowledge.
06:03 - 06:10
Um, Bill slicer slicer mentions to us that you know, we really wanna kind of stay,
06:11 - 06:14
recognize and stabilize the situation and not make things worse
06:15 - 06:17
and just keep in mind that we're a team, um,
06:17 - 06:21
call for help when a situation is beyond your training.
06:21 - 06:26
So if you need to call 911 because there is no one within, you know,
06:26 - 06:28
shouting distance or anybody who can help you.
06:28 - 06:32
That's okay. They're part of the team and they prefer, you know,
06:32 - 06:35
they want to be called early
06:35 - 06:38
and when needed. So don't hesitate to,
06:39 - 06:41
to use your resources on that.
06:42 - 06:43
You hear the,
06:44 - 06:47
um, term, bring the com quite a bit in the,
06:47 - 06:51
in the previous video and I just emphasize it here.
06:51 - 06:57
Um, it's in our first aid manual is like walk, don't run to the event.
06:57 - 06:57
You know,
06:57 - 07:01
you don't want to be flustered or follow yourself trying to get into the writer.
07:01 - 07:02
Um,
07:02 - 07:05
running an arena, dirt is not the same as like running
07:05 - 07:07
through the field or
07:08 - 07:12
across the lawn, um, bring the confidence and anticipate your actions.
07:12 - 07:13
So as you're walking out there,
07:13 - 07:16
anticipate what you are going to do to check out that writer.
07:16 - 07:17
And remember,
07:17 - 07:26
even if you are a parent volunteer who is best skilled at band aids and ice packs, um,
07:26 - 07:29
you know, the first aid expectations in response.
07:29 - 07:32
And so we will look to your leadership for that.
07:34 - 07:37
The next pieces writer health conditions.
07:37 - 07:41
Um, the first day team is not responsible for managing chronic health conditions.
07:41 - 07:44
We understand that we get a variety of writers with
07:44 - 07:48
asthma, maybe seizure history, diabetes, heart conditions.
07:48 - 07:52
Um, these don't prevent people from participating in Western airs,
07:52 - 07:54
but there is an expectation that their parents
07:54 - 07:57
are present and provide care related to that.
07:57 - 08:04
Um, we are volunteers and we do not have any ability to administer medications
08:05 - 08:09
um or treatment to the writers for for health conditions.
08:13 - 08:14
Alright.
08:14 - 08:15
And finally,
08:15 - 08:19
we'll enter into our last section and it's responding to first aid needs.
08:20 - 08:22
I'm going to start with calling 911.
08:22 - 08:25
Probably one of the most important things when you are
08:25 - 08:27
first aid at Western Ares is know where you are.
08:28 - 08:32
Our address. It's here and it's also located throughout the first aid manual.
08:32 - 08:34
It's good to program into your phone.
08:35 - 08:39
Um and one of the caveats to calling 911 is
08:39 - 08:41
you need to tell them is that we're located at the
08:41 - 08:45
Indiana entrance that will bring them right up to the
08:45 - 08:49
westerners entrance and not back into the Jefferson County fairgrounds.
08:50 - 08:51
Um
08:52 - 08:53
You should um
08:54 - 08:57
Be familiar when you should call 911.
08:57 - 08:59
Um and when in doubt call, you know,
08:59 - 09:03
if you've got something that maybe not real obvious but you need help
09:03 - 09:07
go ahead and call their there to support you and um you know,
09:07 - 09:10
have the best possible outcome for our writers.
09:10 - 09:14
Another piece is that if you have to call 911
09:14 - 09:17
or if there's an emergency in the arena during practice,
09:17 - 09:19
a practice is not show.
09:19 - 09:21
So go ahead and clear the arena, not the writer.
09:21 - 09:25
They can stay there and wait for first responders to come to them
09:26 - 09:30
And finally parents do not need to be present to call 911.
09:31 - 09:35
Um as you get up into the higher level teams, even starting as early as triple A.
09:35 - 09:38
We have writers who drive themselves to Westerners
09:38 - 09:40
and so a parent may not be present.
09:40 - 09:42
Um We of course are going to try to
09:42 - 09:46
call parents and notify emergency contacts right alongside but don't
09:47 - 09:51
Wait for the parents permission to call 911 that just delays care.
09:53 - 09:57
Alright. And next section is our concussion protocol.
09:58 - 10:02
Um the concussion protocol is a new requirement in
10:02 - 10:05
Western airs and this is probably going to be
10:05 - 10:09
the most challenging and getting the most pushback because
10:09 - 10:12
it's it's new and it requires more action than we've
10:13 - 10:13
than
10:14 - 10:15
previously taken
10:16 - 10:18
um with our concussion protocol.
10:19 - 10:21
Um just a few facts about this. Um
10:22 - 10:24
concussions do have an impact on the brain.
10:25 - 10:27
And so we want to make sure that we are responding
10:28 - 10:35
um to our writers um with the best, with the best standards and practices in place.
10:36 - 10:40
Um, this is also a requirement of a state statute, um,
10:40 - 10:44
and that covers recreational sports which
10:44 - 10:46
westerners fits into that category.
10:47 - 10:49
This also follows the Colorado High School Athletic
10:49 - 10:53
Association protocol and we like this because it's a
10:53 - 10:56
vetted program and so it's been used as
10:56 - 10:59
a standard and so we're not recreating something.
10:59 - 11:01
Um, this is what
11:01 - 11:04
um any of our athletes are using. And so,
11:04 - 11:09
um, it follows, it's just again vetted in evidence based as well.
11:09 - 11:11
So with the concussion protocol,
11:11 - 11:15
any writer who exhibits any signs of a concussion must be
11:15 - 11:18
removed from the ride until cleared by an advanced medical provider.
11:19 - 11:23
And another key thing with our concussion protocol is that we're screening,
11:23 - 11:24
we're not diagnosing.
11:24 - 11:28
So for writers injured were screening them for symptoms if they have positive,
11:28 - 11:30
have any of the symptoms,
11:31 - 11:33
then we are going to follow
11:33 - 11:36
the protocol and remove them from the ride.
11:38 - 11:38
Um
11:39 - 11:41
and since we're talking about the protocol,
11:41 - 11:43
I'm going to go ahead and just jump over to the forms.
11:43 - 11:46
Um, so documentation is really important.
11:47 - 11:48
Um,
11:48 - 11:52
so whenever we asked for a doctor's note, um
11:54 - 11:55
writer has a participative screen,
11:55 - 11:59
we're going to ask them to be cleared by a health care professional
11:59 - 12:03
and health care professional is defined in this forum,
12:03 - 12:05
but their advanced practice.
12:05 - 12:09
So this is above our end, it's above a paramedic. Um You know these are
12:10 - 12:11
um advanced providers,
12:11 - 12:13
we want to make sure that they clear the
12:13 - 12:17
writer um and give them the best possible outcome.
12:17 - 12:23
Um We also will ask you to provide a head injury notification form
12:23 - 12:27
to the parents notifying them that they have.
12:27 - 12:29
The writer has experienced
12:30 - 12:33
a injury potential injury to their head.
12:34 - 12:39
Um So if a writer does let's say fall off and they clear the concussion screening,
12:39 - 12:41
it doesn't mean that they don't have
12:41 - 12:44
a concussion or potential complications later.
12:45 - 12:49
So this note notifies families and gives them you know, information should
12:50 - 12:51
um anything arise
12:52 - 12:53
from that.
12:54 - 12:55
And then um
12:55 - 12:56
with
12:57 - 13:01
the um if a parent refuses to sign um please notify
13:01 - 13:05
Lucas the same day and he will follow up with that
13:09 - 13:14
um training, um concussion training is required for all first aid responders.
13:14 - 13:15
It's available online.
13:15 - 13:19
You will receive a certificate once you receive that you can send that to Lucas.
13:20 - 13:23
And then we will also be offering in person classes for
13:23 - 13:24
um in the future.
13:26 - 13:28
And finally um
13:28 - 13:34
our last thing is incident reports. Um So we are also
13:35 - 13:39
um asking anytime you um call 911.
13:39 - 13:41
please complete this incident report
13:42 - 13:46
and also there's a major medical injury that requires um
13:46 - 13:49
medical attention. You know a lot of times. Parents will transport
13:50 - 13:54
their writers themselves also please complete an incident report.
13:54 - 13:56
And the nice thing about this is that
13:56 - 14:00
you give an opportunity to present factual information.
14:00 - 14:05
So you know, the game of telephone can kind of go rampant.
14:05 - 14:06
So this is, you know,
14:06 - 14:10
this is grooming communication from you to the First Aid Director
14:10 - 14:16
um about you know, whatever incident happens and anytime you call first, um sorry,
14:16 - 14:17
anytime you call 911,
14:17 - 14:21
we also asked that you call Lucas after that just so
14:21 - 14:25
that we can um start that follow up process and get
14:25 - 14:26
um
14:26 - 14:28
get those needs covered.
14:28 - 14:29
So,
14:29 - 14:31
so that's kind of a high,
14:31 - 14:35
you know, airplane level high in this pine overview of
14:36 - 14:37
um
14:37 - 14:39
our first aid manual.
14:39 - 14:40
I appreciate your time and again,
14:40 - 14:44
thank you to everyone who has stepped up into the First aid role.
14:44 - 14:48
We hope that this is useful to you and helps provide
14:48 - 14:52
um expectations and standardized response. Thank you.
