00:01 - 00:02
Okay. Welcome back.
00:02 - 00:04
Starting my camera got messed up there.
00:05 - 00:07
My notes have not been working by the way today.
00:07 - 00:08
I don't know.
00:08 - 00:09
You guys probably aren't surprised.
00:12 - 00:15
So we wanted to finish up talking about public relations,
00:15 - 00:16
and we're looking at PR tools.
00:17 - 00:20
So if you're in the world of public relations, if
00:20 - 00:22
you're in the world of trying to make the image
00:23 - 00:26
of your company look better to the public and interact
00:26 - 00:28
with the public in a better way, what are the
00:29 - 00:29
tools at your disposal?
00:30 - 00:32
So new product publicity, Right.
00:33 - 00:34
So if you have a brand new product coming out,
00:35 - 00:37
you're gonna do put, try to get gain a lot
00:37 - 00:41
of publicity, gonna talk to all the media outlets and
00:41 - 00:43
try to get them to cover your new product.
00:43 - 00:44
Launch. Right.
00:45 - 00:45
Product placement.
00:46 - 00:47
That is one of my favorites, right?
00:47 - 00:50
We got this stranger things picture here with a can
00:51 - 00:51
of coke.
00:52 - 00:56
I'm sure that Coke pays some money to the director
00:56 - 00:59
of stranger things and says, use Arkan instead of a
01:00 - 01:00
can of Pepsi.
01:01 - 01:05
Um, product placement is something that really was pretty minor
01:05 - 01:08
20 years ago, and now is in everything that we
01:08 - 01:11
watch video games that we play, um, everywhere.
01:12 - 01:14
And sometimes we don't even notice it.
01:14 - 01:16
I think what's interesting now is like a lot of
01:16 - 01:19
my students who are maybe like 25 younger.
01:20 - 01:22
It doesn't even work that well on them anymore because
01:23 - 01:24
they just don't even notice it.
01:24 - 01:27
Although it's probably happening in their subconscious students that are
01:27 - 01:29
older than that, They kind of go like, Oh, yeah,
01:29 - 01:32
there's that seems weird not get that Coke out of
01:32 - 01:32
my screen.
01:33 - 01:34
There's no that's not the right place for that.
01:35 - 01:38
So it's a It's a that's, ah, a topic onto
01:39 - 01:40
its own that we could spend a whole week on
01:40 - 01:40
product placement.
01:42 - 01:47
Um, consumer education eyes part of publicity on DPI are
01:48 - 01:50
So maybe you're gonna hold a press conference to talk
01:51 - 01:53
about, um, you know what your company is doing.
01:54 - 01:55
Or maybe you're going to use the website.
01:57 - 01:58
Uh, sponsorships are big, right?
01:59 - 02:02
Like so happ oh, sponsors the boat races here.
02:03 - 02:04
Um, that's a public relation.
02:05 - 02:08
Move. Um, shoe company sponsor athletes.
02:09 - 02:10
That's a public relation.
02:10 - 02:13
Move. Um, experiential marketing.
02:14 - 02:17
Experiential marketing is then we've talked a little bit about
02:18 - 02:19
that, I think in some past weeks, where it's like
02:20 - 02:26
instead of just providing, um, marketing of the product or
02:27 - 02:29
the service that we create an experience.
02:30 - 02:33
Right? And so And then I think I mentioned this
02:33 - 02:34
already a little bit, but the company website, right?
02:35 - 02:37
We could use the company website to build good relations
02:38 - 02:39
with the community in the public.
02:43 - 02:45
So that's a little bit on public relations.
02:46 - 02:47
Let's take a look at sales promotions.
02:48 - 02:54
Um, so we've we've we've already covered, like, all the
02:54 - 02:57
different stuff that we could well have.
02:57 - 03:00
This this lecture series on promotions goes for two weeks.
03:00 - 03:03
So we kind of covered half of what we can
03:04 - 03:07
do. A ce faras the third p in the marketing
03:08 - 03:09
mix. Right this promotional mix.
03:10 - 03:14
But those were like long term strategy moves.
03:14 - 03:17
Sales promotions, on the other hand, are short term incentives.
03:18 - 03:21
Right. How come we motivate consumers how we can give
03:21 - 03:24
them those little nudges that they need to purchase a
03:24 - 03:25
good or service immediately?
03:27 - 03:28
Right. We need to lower the price.
03:28 - 03:30
Or do we need to add value by bundling?
03:31 - 03:32
It was something else, you know.
03:32 - 03:33
What do we need to do?
03:34 - 03:35
Thio drive the sale?
03:37 - 03:43
Um, so we can use trade promotions or consumer promotions
03:43 - 03:45
that could break all sales promotions down into one of
03:46 - 03:46
those two categories.
03:48 - 03:51
So and I've done both in my career.
03:52 - 03:53
I'm a little bit more familiar with this.
03:54 - 03:56
Like from a business side, I'm a little more familiar
03:56 - 03:58
with trade sales promotions from a consumer side.
03:59 - 04:02
I'm much more familiar with consumer sales promotions, obviously, but
04:03 - 04:08
a trade sales promotion is where the manufacturer promotes something
04:09 - 04:10
to members of the marketing channel.
04:11 - 04:13
Right? We looked at marketing channels and all the different
04:13 - 04:17
layers. So this is where the manufacturer this happens.
04:17 - 04:19
Maurin party like a push strategy.
04:19 - 04:26
Right. So the manufacturer, um, says, Hey, wholesaler Hey, retailer,
04:27 - 04:30
I'm gonna give you a certain discount to help you
04:30 - 04:31
buy more products.
04:32 - 04:34
So So let's just go one by one.
04:34 - 04:35
Trade allowance, right?
04:35 - 04:38
We just say, Hey, if you buy from me in
04:38 - 04:40
the month of December is coming up.
04:40 - 04:42
If you buy from me in the month of December,
04:43 - 04:44
we're gonna give you 10% off, okay?
04:45 - 04:47
And you're hoping that that will make it so they
04:47 - 04:48
will buy more from you.
04:48 - 04:49
That's a trade sales promotion.
04:49 - 04:51
That's the most general one.
04:51 - 04:53
Ah, push money would be kind of the same thing,
04:54 - 04:58
just in a different, uh, right, that pushing strategy where
04:58 - 05:00
it's like, Hey, if you buy more from us, we'll
05:00 - 05:02
give you more money, right?
05:02 - 05:03
Hey, if you buy one truckload, we'll give you 10%
05:04 - 05:06
off. But if you buy two truck, ALS will give
05:06 - 05:07
you 15% off the whole order.
05:08 - 05:11
Um, some companies might just say, Hey, if you buy
05:11 - 05:13
from us, will provide free training so that you can
05:13 - 05:17
then help your customers, um, free merchandise is one of
05:18 - 05:20
my It's like it's one of my pet peeves and
05:20 - 05:22
one of my favorites at the same time.
05:22 - 05:26
Like uh, right, like maybe you're working with with with
05:27 - 05:30
a retailer and you say, like, Hey, if you buy,
05:31 - 05:35
you normally buy your average two truckloads a month you
05:35 - 05:35
buy from us.
05:36 - 05:38
If you buy three, I can throw in like my.
05:39 - 05:44
My company is giving away big screen TVs to the
05:45 - 05:47
three retailers who buy the most from us, and I
05:47 - 05:49
think if you buy three containers this month, you might
05:49 - 05:52
get one of those free TVs or you maybe you
05:52 - 05:54
just stop in and you give them free merchandise free
05:55 - 05:59
branded stuff and then coop in store demos, thes air,
05:59 - 06:00
some of my favorite as well.
06:00 - 06:03
So there's like a Cinco DeMayo co op store demo
06:03 - 06:08
where Budweiser, um you know, probably pays for this and
06:08 - 06:12
says, Hey, such and such grocery store, if you guys
06:12 - 06:16
set up a really cool cinco demayo, um, display for
06:16 - 06:19
us, we will give you a certain amount of money
06:20 - 06:22
and, well, we really appreciate it.
06:22 - 06:25
If you do this right, And so then it makes
06:25 - 06:27
right then they get to get a lower.
06:27 - 06:31
The retailer has the incentive to make this so that
06:31 - 06:33
they get a lower cost and increased sales.
06:34 - 06:36
It's a win win situation there now.
06:36 - 06:39
Consumer sales promotions of the ones that you and I
06:39 - 06:41
are more familiar with because they were being directed at
06:42 - 06:43
us. The consumer right?
06:44 - 06:46
So we might some of these air pretty obvious, right?
06:46 - 06:47
But coupons right?
06:47 - 06:47
If some.
06:47 - 06:51
If we're giving getting a coupon, whether it's a buy
06:51 - 06:54
one, get one free or a certain amount off.
06:54 - 06:56
That's a great consumer sales promo tool.
06:57 - 06:59
I mean, I know that when I would shop at
06:59 - 07:02
Fred Meyers and I would get coupons delivered to my
07:03 - 07:06
AP, it would be like, Oh, I don't know I
07:06 - 07:09
could maybe by that, but it's not on sale and
07:09 - 07:11
I look and, yeah, there's a coupon there and then
07:11 - 07:12
I might buy it.
07:13 - 07:13
Uh huh.
07:14 - 07:16
Ari is really good on coupons to they only do
07:16 - 07:16
like they do.
07:17 - 07:19
It's like a 20% off coupon sale twice a year.
07:20 - 07:22
And so I almost always use that to go buy
07:22 - 07:23
something from Mari.
07:23 - 07:24
It it's probably whether or not I need it or
07:25 - 07:26
not. Rebates.
07:27 - 07:30
Right? Rebates are definitely losing popularity, but this is just
07:30 - 07:32
a cash refund like, let's say you buy it.
07:33 - 07:36
And then during a certain time period, you send in
07:37 - 07:39
like the receipt you get send you 20 bucks back
07:39 - 07:40
or something like that.
07:40 - 07:40
That's rebate.
07:41 - 07:44
Um, people don't have time for that anymore, so it
07:44 - 07:45
doesn't work as well.
07:46 - 07:48
Um, premiums right?
07:49 - 07:52
An extra item offered to maybe sweeten the deal a
07:52 - 07:52
little bit.
07:52 - 07:54
I put down the example of the Happy Meal toy.
07:55 - 07:56
My kids love the happy.
07:57 - 07:58
They they don't get the happy meal toy for the
07:58 - 08:00
food, the happy meal for the food.
08:00 - 08:01
They love the toy.
08:01 - 08:02
That's little premium.
08:02 - 08:03
They throw in.
08:03 - 08:06
Um, let's see what else?
08:07 - 08:09
Loyalty programs and frequent buyer programs.
08:10 - 08:14
Right? Uh, the companies use those to try to persuade
08:15 - 08:19
us tobe I'm or or spend mawr money with that
08:20 - 08:22
company, uh, contests and sweepstakes.
08:22 - 08:25
This also is kind of fading a little bit, but
08:26 - 08:27
there's still a lot of this going on expect.
08:27 - 08:29
So you guys know this better than I do.
08:29 - 08:31
But with social Media, you see a little bit of
08:31 - 08:34
this contest and sweepstakes spiked back up where it's like,
08:34 - 08:38
Hey, share this with so many people and tag us
08:38 - 08:40
and you could be entered to win such and such
08:41 - 08:41
things, right?
08:42 - 08:44
So that's still going on a little bit and then
08:45 - 08:49
sampling right everybody's favorite thing is toe eat like 1000
08:49 - 08:51
calories and Costco with the free samples.
08:51 - 08:51
That's a lot of fun.
08:52 - 08:55
And then point of purchase display very similar to the
08:55 - 08:56
Budweiser thing.
08:56 - 09:00
Ah, promotional display set up at the retailer retailers location
09:01 - 09:04
to build traffic or advertise the product, or maybe even
09:04 - 09:06
just induce impulse buys.
09:06 - 09:10
Right? So, um, that's another way we can get more
09:11 - 09:12
business from the consumer themselves.
09:14 - 09:17
My throat's going so it's a good time that we're
09:17 - 09:19
done, we're wrapping up.
09:19 - 09:22
This is Volume four and we're wrapping up promotion and
09:22 - 09:25
communication. I believe we have one more lecture Siris on
09:26 - 09:29
the third p of marketing promotion, and then we'll get
09:30 - 09:31
into pricing in the last week.
09:32 - 09:33
So I hope you guys enjoyed this week.
09:34 - 09:37
Hopefully next week either get my notes toe work or
09:38 - 09:40
I'll just be better at add living.
09:41 - 09:43
But yeah, I hope you guys got something out of
09:43 - 09:45
this and I'll talk to you again soon.
