00:00 - 00:01
Yeah. Hi everyone.
00:02 - 00:03
My name is Daniel Salvador and today I will present
00:04 - 00:06
to you the light program here at Cypress College for
00:06 - 00:09
the fall of 2021 1st.
00:09 - 00:12
I'd like to talk about the community that we serve.
00:13 - 00:17
We provide support and resources through higher education for students
00:18 - 00:21
who are four million incarcerated or have experiencing the criminal
00:21 - 00:24
justice or legal system As well as students who have
00:24 - 00:27
a loved one who has experienced incarceration as well as
00:27 - 00:30
students who are in recovery from substance abuse, including drugs
00:31 - 00:31
or alcohol.
00:32 - 00:34
Now, why do we serve this community, first of all,
00:34 - 00:39
education lowers the recidivism rate significantly, According to a Harvard
00:39 - 00:41
political review review by Lisbon ECI.
00:42 - 00:47
In the us, the recidivism rate is 76.6 According to
00:47 - 00:49
a Northwestern University Prison Education Program.
00:50 - 00:53
There is a 43% reduction in recidivism rates for those
00:54 - 00:55
who participate in prison education programs.
00:58 - 01:00
Now, what this goes to show is that receiving a
01:00 - 01:04
higher education not only drastically reduces the recidivism rate, it
01:04 - 01:07
also prevents the reproduction of the very conditions that lead
01:07 - 01:10
people to prison by becoming educated members of society.
01:11 - 01:15
We also provide support and resources through higher education for
01:15 - 01:19
students who are justice involved system impacted substance abuse recovery,
01:19 - 01:24
students who experience significant challenges and barriers such as financial,
01:25 - 01:29
social support, housing, food, child care, family court, legal barriers,
01:30 - 01:33
restitution fees, mental health issues and substance abuse.
01:38 - 01:40
Now, I'd like to present to you our live program
01:40 - 01:43
coordinator and Fight club advisor, as well as our professional
01:44 - 01:47

06:19 - 06:21
I'd like to talk about the life programme and the
06:22 - 06:22
fight club.
06:23 - 06:23
What are the differences?
06:24 - 06:28
Some people get confused between between the two and I
06:28 - 06:32
will now explain the main difference between the fight club
06:32 - 06:33
and the life programme.
06:34 - 06:37
First of all the life programme was born from the
06:37 - 06:37
fight club.
06:39 - 06:43
Also, the the fight club is student driven with a
06:43 - 06:44
student leadership team.
06:44 - 06:48
Meanwhile the life programme is a faculty student driven program
06:48 - 06:51
under the direction of Dr Troy Davis.
07:00 - 07:02
Now here are some of the ways that life can
07:02 - 07:06
help the Life programme stands for liberated intellects for excellence.
07:07 - 07:09
The primary purpose of the Light program here at Cypress
07:10 - 07:13
College is to provide resources and support through higher education
07:14 - 07:17
for students who are formerly incarcerated or have experience in
07:18 - 07:20
the criminal justice or legal system, as well as providing
07:21 - 07:24
services for students who are system impacted or in recovery
07:25 - 07:25
from substance abuse.
07:26 - 07:28
Now here's some of the resources that we provide, such
07:29 - 07:33
as textbook vouchers, which can be redeemed at the bookstore
07:33 - 07:34
here at Cypress College.
07:34 - 07:37
We also have peer mentors to help guide students through
07:37 - 07:40
their first year on Cyprus colleges campus, as well as
07:41 - 07:43
emergency gift cards such as gas or food.
07:45 - 07:49
We also have an amazing community with regular community meetings
07:49 - 07:49
and events.
07:50 - 07:52
Again, everyone is more than welcome to attend.
07:52 - 07:56
We also provide advocacy letters, letters which are letters written
07:56 - 07:59
for you to judges, courts, parole and probation officers.
07:59 - 08:01
On behalf of the life programme.
08:02 - 08:04
Again, we have our email right below.
08:05 - 08:08
You may contact us at Life at Cyprus College dot
08:08 - 08:09
e D U.
08:10 - 08:12
And we look forward to communicating with you.
08:16 - 08:19
Now, here is a quote by Angela Davis, prisons do
08:19 - 08:20
not disappear.
08:20 - 08:22
Social problems, they disappear.
08:22 - 08:27
Human beings, homelessness, unemployment, drug addiction, mental illness and illiteracy
08:28 - 08:30
are only a few of the problems that disappear from
08:30 - 08:33
public view when the human beings contending with them are
08:33 - 08:36
relegated to cages by Angela Davis.
08:37 - 08:39
Now, this quote says a lot about the philosophy that
08:39 - 08:41
we believe here within the Light program.
08:42 - 08:46
The Light programme strives to support formerly incarcerated system impacted
08:46 - 08:49
and substance abuse recovery students so that they can successfully
08:50 - 08:53
achieve their goals through the vehicle of higher education, receiving
08:54 - 08:57
an education not only drastically reduces the recidivism rate, it
08:58 - 09:01
also serves to elevate individuals and communities out of the
09:01 - 09:02
systems that lead to their incarceration.
09:03 - 09:07
We aim to empower and continue empowering the generations of
09:07 - 09:15
students who enroll with Cyprus College and that's all I
09:15 - 09:16
have for you today.
09:16 - 09:18
Thank you so much for listening and have a nice
09:18 - 09:19
rest of your day.
09:19 - 09:19
Thank you.
