00:01 - 00:07
Hello, Children. Happy Friday and I'm here for your weekly Friday assembly.
00:07 - 00:11
We're going to do a series of assemblies about mindfulness this term,
00:11 - 00:14
and I want to really help you to understand why mindfulness is
00:14 - 00:17
so important and how it can help you in your life.
00:18 - 00:22
So let us begin by being really, really still and calm,
00:23 - 00:26
and we're going to do a little breathing exercise first and want you to imagine
00:26 - 00:29
that you have got a cup of hot chocolate.
00:29 - 00:32
So this is called the hot chocolate breathing exercise.
00:32 - 00:34
Again, pick up a cup of hot chocolate
00:34 - 00:40
and all you're going to do is try and smell the aroma of the hot chocolate.
00:40 - 00:44
And then it's really, really hot. So you're going to blow on the hot chocolate. Now.
00:44 - 00:49
The key is to spend longer on the blowing out than the inhaling.
00:49 - 00:53
In case you already do it with me. See, go
00:56 - 00:58
and again.
00:59 - 00:59
Yeah,
01:02 - 01:07
teachers, just pause the video and just do that five times with your Children.
01:07 - 01:13
Five times should be enough to make you feel energised and calm and in a happy place A.
01:14 - 01:16
Because breathing really helps with that. Just pause the video.
01:18 - 01:23
Hi, Hopefully, you're you're back with me. Okay? So I'm going to talk to you.
01:23 - 01:24
First of all,
01:24 - 01:29
about the difference between the brain and the mind you might think you may be.
01:29 - 01:31
You know a little bit about this already.
01:31 - 01:35
So the brain is the organ, the physical organ that's inside your head.
01:35 - 01:40
But your mind is like magic because your mind can travel in time,
01:40 - 01:42
your mind can wander.
01:42 - 01:46
Your mind can travel to places that your brain cannot travel to,
01:46 - 01:48
just to see what I mean.
01:48 - 01:50
Are you ready? I went to your hands ready?
01:50 - 01:56
And in a minute, I'm going to ask you to really, really hard. You ready? 123 up.
01:57 - 01:57
Okay.
01:58 - 02:00
What does that feel like? Is it hurting on your hands yet?
02:00 - 02:06
At the moment, your mind is on your hands and on how sore your hands are.
02:06 - 02:08
Yeah, but your brain still in your head.
02:09 - 02:13
And if I asked you to think about the things that you did yesterday and really
02:13 - 02:16
make the movie in your head and close your eyes and the same again tomorrow,
02:16 - 02:20
you can see that your brain is your mind is capable of try and travel.
02:20 - 02:22
So That's the difference between the brain and the mind.
02:22 - 02:24
The brain is the physical organ,
02:25 - 02:29
and the mind can travel around, but it's still part of your brain.
02:29 - 02:31
They're still interconnected. Okay,
02:31 - 02:40
now what actually is mindful this, then all mindfulness is is using our five senses,
02:40 - 02:41
and I've listed them here for you.
02:41 - 02:43
Taste, hearing
02:43 - 02:44
site,
02:45 - 02:46
smell
02:46 - 02:51
and touch. It's really using the senses to experience the world that you're in now.
02:51 - 02:57
Not tomorrow, not yesterday. It's being mindful of what you're doing right now.
02:57 - 02:57
Okay,
02:58 - 02:59
Um,
02:59 - 03:06
so let's move on. Okay, So what mindfulness can look like?
03:06 - 03:11
It can be, um, doing some breathing exercises. It can be doing some meditation.
03:11 - 03:15
It can be a walk in nature and just really being present while you're there
03:16 - 03:20
can be when you're eating a meal and showing gratitude for that meal,
03:20 - 03:23
it can be spending time with loved ones have
03:23 - 03:25
been really present And not having your mobile phone
03:25 - 03:28
or your iPad or anything like that with you
03:28 - 03:30
so mindfulness can look like lots of different things.
03:30 - 03:34
It can be jotting down in a journal. I do a lot of journal and it really helps me
03:35 - 03:37
now. How do we get better at mindfulness.
03:37 - 03:39
Well, it's a little bit like learning to play an instrument.
03:39 - 03:42
The more you practise it, the better you will get.
03:43 - 03:47
But why should we? Why should we practise mindfulness? Well,
03:48 - 03:52
mindfulness can really help you to be happier in life.
03:52 - 03:55
And here I've got little poster that shows you.
03:55 - 04:00
All of the scientists have done lots of research on mindfulness,
04:00 - 04:04
and it can make you feel more confident can make you feel more calm.
04:04 - 04:08
It can help you get better academic results so it can help you with your learning.
04:09 - 04:16
It can help you feel at peace and so so many benefits and improve concentration,
04:16 - 04:17
lots and lots of things.
04:17 - 04:20
That's why we've been doing lots more mindfulness in school.
04:21 - 04:21
Right then,
04:22 - 04:23
it's your turn.
04:23 - 04:27
So we're going to start off by playing a game that I'm sure you've played before.
04:27 - 04:29
And it's the mirror game.
04:29 - 04:32
I'm going to use your senses. So in a minute,
04:32 - 04:35
when I say go, I want you to get with a partner
04:36 - 04:41
and you're just going to practise, mirroring what the other person is doing.
04:41 - 04:42
So using your senses,
04:42 - 04:44
really looking at your partner decide who's
04:44 - 04:46
going to forgive person who's going to lead
04:47 - 04:48
and then swap over.
04:48 - 04:54
And I just want you to spend a few minutes just mirroring each other. Okay? Ready? Go.
04:55 - 04:56
Hopefully
04:56 - 05:02
you're back with me now. Okay? You may have found it was easier when you were copying.
05:02 - 05:04
Or maybe you found it easier when you were leading.
05:04 - 05:09
But the Keith purpose of this exercise, Children, is when you're mirroring,
05:09 - 05:13
you have to release your senses to be present and really, really watch.
05:13 - 05:13
And be careful.
05:14 - 05:17
I can. Now we're going to try some mindful eating.
05:17 - 05:21
Your teachers have got something to give you and we'll
05:21 - 05:24
pass that round and we'll do that exercise together.
05:24 - 05:27
They'll read the instructions for you. So do that now.
05:29 - 05:31
Okay, Hopefully you are back.
05:31 - 05:36
Really proud of how hard you've all worked this week and
05:36 - 05:39
the wonderful things that I've seen happening in your classes.
05:39 - 05:46
I've I've loved seeing some meditation. I saw some gorgeous French lessons.
05:46 - 05:53
I've also seen some amazing drawing and planning of Roman catapults in year five,
05:53 - 05:54
which it was very exciting.
05:54 - 05:55
Um,
05:55 - 05:57
so it's great to see you really making the
05:57 - 06:01
most of all your learning oxygen opportunities at school.
06:01 - 06:07
I hope you have an amazing weekend. Please bow your heads and close your eyes.
06:08 - 06:12
Heavenly Father, help all these dear Children to be grateful
06:13 - 06:16
for all of the amazing opportunities that we have in school
06:17 - 06:20
and help us always remember to work hard
06:20 - 06:21
to be kind,
06:21 - 06:23
to do the right thing
06:23 - 06:24
and to make a difference.
06:25 - 06:28
Our men have an amazing weekend, everyone by
