00:01 - 00:04
today in Social studies, we will be reviewing lessons four
00:04 - 00:05
and five of topics six.
00:06 - 00:10
These lessons are about society in Athens and Sparta, Economy
00:11 - 00:13
and Warfare in Athens and Sparta.
00:13 - 00:16
So, to begin, I'm just going to do a brief
00:16 - 00:18
summary of the main concepts that we talked about.
00:18 - 00:22
In less than four we discussed education and life in
00:22 - 00:24
society in Athens versus that of Sparta.
00:25 - 00:28
We discussed the need for trade and expansion as well
00:28 - 00:31
as the root cause for that need, which was overpopulation
00:32 - 00:32
in ancient Greece.
00:33 - 00:35
And then in less than five we discussed a little
00:35 - 00:38
bit more about the rivalry between these two famous city
00:38 - 00:41
states as well as the Peloponnesian war.
00:42 - 00:44
So let's take a look at the vocab terms for
00:44 - 00:47
today. In the lesson, we will be enjoying a round
00:47 - 00:49
of jeopardy to sort of summarize all of these concepts.
00:50 - 00:52
So, watching this video before the lesson will definitely help
00:52 - 00:53
you with that.
00:54 - 00:55
Here, I have the list of words.
00:56 - 00:57
These can be found on today's Word wall.
00:57 - 00:59
It will take you to the equivalent link we have
01:00 - 01:04
economy barter, which is the system of exchanging goods before
01:04 - 01:08
currency was invented in ancient Greece of course, currency expansion
01:09 - 01:18
trade routes, the Peloponnesian war, ally, peninsula, Democracy, assembly council
01:19 - 01:19
and overpopulation.
01:20 - 01:22
So you can take a look at these words and
01:22 - 01:24
enjoy some of the activities on quiz lit.
01:24 - 01:25
There is a matching activity.
01:26 - 01:29
Um, and a few other test uh, I think self
01:29 - 01:32
assessment tests that you can do to just make sure
01:32 - 01:34
that these vocab terms are crystal clear in your mind.
01:36 - 01:38
All right, let's look a little bit deeper into lesson
01:38 - 01:40
fork. We began by discussing education.
01:42 - 01:44
We talked about how in Athens they had more of
01:44 - 01:45
a well rounded education.
01:46 - 01:49
They learned about math, literature, music and art.
01:50 - 01:53
However, only boys were allowed to have an education because
01:53 - 01:56
they believe that the reason for education was to build
01:56 - 02:01
strong intelligent citizens to vote and women were not able
02:01 - 02:02
to vote to begin with.
02:02 - 02:05
So they decided that they wouldn't even need an education.
02:06 - 02:10
Whereas in Sparta their education was focused around physical strength.
02:11 - 02:14
They went to military training at the age of seven
02:15 - 02:17
boys were the only ones who are allowed in the
02:17 - 02:20
military, but women did have a little bit more independence
02:21 - 02:23
in other aspects of education.
02:25 - 02:27
We talked about how they needed to deal with overpopulation.
02:29 - 02:31
They did not have enough resources, They have scarce resources
02:32 - 02:34
and that's why they needed to come up with different
02:34 - 02:38
strategies. One of the strategy strategies is conquest and this
02:38 - 02:41
is something that Sparta decided to do as the city
02:41 - 02:44
state is just go and conquer neighboring lands and make
02:45 - 02:46
those people slaves to them.
02:47 - 02:50
The second method is migration, just peacefully moving to another
02:50 - 02:52
area. And the third was through trade.
02:53 - 02:55
We also discussed how trade allowed them to expand.
02:56 - 02:57
It allowed them to grow.
02:59 - 03:02
And we also discussed um the invention of coins, which
03:02 - 03:04
they learned from the civilization of Lydia.
03:05 - 03:07
They had coins and like in Athens for example, they
03:07 - 03:09
had a little owl on their coins and that owl
03:10 - 03:15
represented the goddess of Athena and barter, as I mentioned,
03:16 - 03:18
is the system of exchanging goods for other goods.
03:20 - 03:21
Okay, less than five.
03:22 - 03:24
It was mainly about the Peloponnesian war.
03:24 - 03:27
So to summarize this, I'll just go through some of
03:27 - 03:27
the main questions.
03:28 - 03:28
# one.
03:30 - 03:32
Why did the Peloponnesian war last so long?
03:33 - 03:36
Well, it lasted so long because of Athens, a strong
03:37 - 03:38
navy and Sparta's strong army.
03:39 - 03:41
Neither side could really defeat the other in the beginning.
03:42 - 03:43
That's why I took a very long time.
03:44 - 03:47
Next. What action by Athens laid the groundwork for its
03:47 - 03:48
eventual defeat.
03:49 - 03:51
As you know, Athens did lose the war after 25
03:51 - 03:54
years. Um, and the answer to that is, Athens invaded
03:54 - 03:57
Sicily and lost a large part of its Navy fleet.
04:00 - 04:02
Next, what other factors led to Athens defeat?
04:03 - 04:06
Persia ended up helping Sparta rebuild its navy and that
04:06 - 04:10
made Sparta stronger than Athens at sea last, but not
04:10 - 04:13
least what finally led to the downfall of Greece.
04:14 - 04:16
The greek city states grew weaker because they kept fighting
04:17 - 04:20
one another and this enabled Macedonia to conquer Greece entirely.
04:23 - 04:27
Okay, moving on to reviewing geography skills.
04:27 - 04:29
Here is a map that we had in lesson fork.
04:30 - 04:31
This shows you as you can see in the map
04:32 - 04:35
key, the different trade routes that were used and shaded
04:35 - 04:38
in orange are areas that were settled by ancient Greeks.
04:39 - 04:42
So you can really tell how the issue of overpopulation
04:43 - 04:46
actually allowed them to grow because of the three methods
04:46 - 04:49
that they decided to use on today's.
04:50 - 04:50
You see page.
04:50 - 04:52
I have some self assessments that you can do to
04:52 - 04:55
practice and some tutorials as well.
04:56 - 04:58
So please prepare for the lesson so that our round
04:59 - 05:01
of jeopardy can be enjoyable and just a simple way
05:01 - 05:04
for you to ensure your understanding of less than four
05:04 - 05:06
and five social studies concepts.
