00:01 - 00:04
this is Caitlin howard presenting my synthesis project
00:04 - 00:07
and the ways we connect writing elements.
00:10 - 00:12
Many lessons and shared writing
00:13 - 00:18
is my first connection and many lessons are a great way to bridge the
00:18 - 00:22
gap of knowledge or create a way to incorporate shared writing in your classroom,
00:22 - 00:23
shared a group.
00:23 - 00:25
Writing is a great way to get your students to collaborate,
00:25 - 00:27
especially when you're doing something like a mini lesson
00:27 - 00:30
where they're trying to learn the same thing,
00:30 - 00:34
You can have students work together to create a story or discuss
00:34 - 00:36
a topic that maybe they didn't quite understand the first time.
00:37 - 00:40
So if you were worried about something like sentence fluency,
00:40 - 00:43
you could have your kids get together to make sure
00:43 - 00:46
that they could write a paragraph that made sense,
00:46 - 00:48
beginning to stop up
00:49 - 00:51
and work on those connections
00:52 - 00:53
as a group.
00:53 - 00:55
So maybe one kid has a sentence and then another
00:55 - 00:58
kid has to find a sentence or make a sentence
00:59 - 01:03
to connect to the next one and you make sure that everything flows together
01:04 - 01:05
and
01:07 - 01:10
your students aren't going to feel quite as alone exploring
01:10 - 01:13
something that they struggle with or maybe don't know too well
01:13 - 01:17
when all the people around them are feeling the same way
01:17 - 01:19
and you can really see that in a mini lesson.
01:23 - 01:26
My next is pre writing an organization which go hand
01:26 - 01:29
in hand when you focus on organization of a piece.
01:29 - 01:33
Something we looked at a lot in our own classroom is graphic organizers.
01:33 - 01:35
We use them for our pre writing to line up what we wanted
01:35 - 01:38
to do with our stories for both when we practiced with the kids
01:39 - 01:41
and just did it by ourselves.
01:41 - 01:43
But the organization of a piece
01:44 - 01:47
is how you understand what you want to do with your piece.
01:48 - 01:49
And
01:49 - 01:52
that really goes hand in hand
01:52 - 01:54
as a whole. When you think about writing,
01:55 - 01:57
every kind of writing has a specific way.
01:57 - 02:01
It should be organized and involves a lot of organizational elements,
02:03 - 02:08
even if it's just as a way to figure out what you want to do, creating your job list,
02:08 - 02:11
be being able to make a beginning, middle and end,
02:11 - 02:14
especially when it becomes a part of your
02:14 - 02:18
higher education where you're writing has a format and
02:18 - 02:23
you have to think about maybe these five paragraphs have to be set up a certain way
02:24 - 02:27
or you have to worry about the flow of your story
02:28 - 02:33
and the cohesiveness that comes from organization is what's going to get you there.
02:36 - 02:39
My next topic is shared writing to publishing,
02:44 - 02:49
sharing time leads the way to publishing and is also a form of publishing.
02:49 - 02:51
You can start with things like sharing time in your classroom
02:51 - 02:56
to make your student more comfortable and then publishing comes around
02:56 - 02:58
and it's almost like practice for them.
02:58 - 02:59
Throughout the process,
02:59 - 03:01
students are able to share their work and
03:01 - 03:03
become more comfortable speaking in front of others,
03:03 - 03:05
reading in front of the class and displaying their work.
03:05 - 03:07
Publishing is just the final step of something like sharing
03:07 - 03:10
time where students are able to show their final product.
03:10 - 03:14
Our students had a very large publishing party where they shared their work,
03:14 - 03:17
but they could have easily had a small sharing time amongst their peers
03:17 - 03:20
to get advice and learn more about how readers to be their stories.
03:21 - 03:25
Sharing time is a really great way to make sure your students get comfortable
03:26 - 03:30
talking in front of their peers, sharing their ideas. So when at times
03:30 - 03:32
comes time for criticism,
03:33 - 03:37
it's not harsh, it's just something that's going to help them.
03:37 - 03:39
And they also get positive feedback.
03:43 - 03:45
Word choice in revising
03:45 - 03:47
revising and word choice online,
03:47 - 03:49
when an author goes through their work and decides to improve it
03:49 - 03:51
by adding more interesting details or
03:51 - 03:53
more descriptive words to enhance their story
03:53 - 03:56
in almost every writing class I've ever been in.
03:56 - 03:57
And with my own student,
03:57 - 04:00
we looked back through the writing of a piece
04:00 - 04:03
to find and add imagery and a stronger words
04:03 - 04:06
to give the reader a picture By revising for word choice.
04:06 - 04:09
Students are able to enhance their writing and show their creativity
04:09 - 04:11
in the first draft that may not have come through,
04:12 - 04:14
you always have to think about the greater
04:14 - 04:17
details and reevaluate your word choice in your work
04:18 - 04:23
to add new life to your story and find a way to draw attention to something
04:23 - 04:25
that might have been simple before
04:26 - 04:30
by adding a few new words or a few words that maybe aren't
04:30 - 04:34
the repeat. That happens when you are in a creative flow.
04:37 - 04:40
My final connection is voice and independent writing.
04:40 - 04:43
Independent writing and voice are connected Because when you write
04:43 - 04:46
independently characterizations about yourself are going to come through,
04:46 - 04:50
especially when you write things like a narrative when we wrote with the kids,
04:50 - 04:52
we were able to see their personality shine through in the
04:52 - 04:57
way they wrote in the way that is identifiable to others
04:57 - 04:58
in the same way that when I write,
04:58 - 05:02
my teacher knows it's me because I have a specific way of writing
05:02 - 05:05
that reflects who I am as a person and as an author,
05:06 - 05:08
my voice is coming through
05:09 - 05:10
and it won't
05:11 - 05:14
come through strongly with something like shared writing
05:14 - 05:17
because you're going to get a modeling of voices.
05:18 - 05:21
When you have an independent writer, you're going to hear that voice,
05:21 - 05:23
you're going to notice the words they use
05:23 - 05:26
the phrases and maybe even their thoughts and
05:26 - 05:29
opinions coming through depending on the piece because
05:29 - 05:32
it's something you're going to recognize over time.
05:34 - 05:37
That is my presentation. Thank you so much for watching
05:37 - 05:39
Osuna, I hope you're not super bored
