00:02 - 00:04
Hello, my name is Ashley Greene.
00:04 - 00:11
And the film nowhere director that I chose was robert Aldrich born august 9th 1918
00:12 - 00:16
and three notable films were Kiss me, deadly, which is the one we watched
00:16 - 00:17
for a class
00:18 - 00:20
vera cruz in the big knife.
00:21 - 00:25
Some common themes that I noticed were hopelessness, deceit and greed.
00:28 - 00:33
And other important references were war in the female role in film nowhere
00:37 - 00:38
getting in hopelessness.
00:38 - 00:44
I noticed that a lot of characters feel trapped in their lives,
00:44 - 00:47
which is often due to blackmail,
00:47 - 00:48
which is
00:48 - 00:51
again often financial or
00:53 - 00:56
the character having some criminal
00:56 - 00:59
act used against them or their loved ones are taken
00:59 - 01:02
from them and they feel like they have nothing left.
01:03 - 01:06
We can see this in the big knife where
01:06 - 01:10
the main character Charles castle who is an actor slash model,
01:10 - 01:12
one side of the business, but
01:13 - 01:14
his manager team
01:15 - 01:22
has blackmail against him, which was that he killed a young girl in a car crash
01:23 - 01:27
and they use this to keep him within a contract even though
01:27 - 01:30
he doesn't want it and his wife also wants him out.
01:30 - 01:31
She
01:32 - 01:34
even wants to divorce him over it,
01:34 - 01:39
which is why he feels cornered and has nothing really going for him because he
01:39 - 01:43
doesn't like his job and he's going to lose his wife because of it.
01:47 - 01:51
The extent of his feelings of hopelessness are seen at the very end,
01:51 - 01:54
where he actually commits suicide.
02:00 - 02:04
Another common theme that we see are deceit and
02:04 - 02:07
greed and these often go hand in hand because
02:09 - 02:11
greed is a big thing in film,
02:11 - 02:16
know where the characters are often looking for money or other valuable
02:16 - 02:22
things in their lives because it's very superficial and they use deceit
02:23 - 02:24
to get what they want.
02:24 - 02:28
Both male and females use this tactic but females
02:28 - 02:30
use it a lot more since they don't have
02:30 - 02:32
the same kind of power that men do
02:38 - 02:43
and we can see the sea and grade a lot in vera cruz
02:43 - 02:47
where the main character, joe erin and Benjamin train.
02:48 - 02:49
Benjamin
02:49 - 02:52
meets joe in the very beginning trying to buy
02:52 - 02:55
a horse from him and right from the start,
02:55 - 03:00
joe tries to manipulate him by selling him a stolen horse.
03:00 - 03:03
But then after chasing him, Benjamin
03:05 - 03:12
actually turns the table and steals joe's horse from him, which is surprising and
03:13 - 03:17
joe actually gains the respect from a respect to
03:17 - 03:20
Benjamin after this and they kind of team up
03:21 - 03:23
and meet up with this
03:25 - 03:29
sort of spanish government royalty sort of group
03:30 - 03:32
and are offered a job
03:32 - 03:37
to safely transport the countess
03:38 - 03:39
Uh to a certain location.
03:39 - 03:42
But they later find out that the countess
03:42 - 03:46
is actually a decoy and they're really transportation
03:46 - 03:52
$3 million dollars worth of gold. And the countess know knows about this and
03:52 - 03:56
was planning on stealing it herself, but once the other to find out
03:57 - 04:00
they plan to split it amongst each other even though
04:00 - 04:05
they really have no intentions of splitting it, especially joe And the countess,
04:10 - 04:15
we can also see this in the character lily carver and kiss me deadly
04:16 - 04:17
because
04:18 - 04:19
at the very end,
04:19 - 04:20
she
04:21 - 04:26
really wants to know what's in the box even though she's told not to open it
04:27 - 04:29
and ends up killing
04:30 - 04:32
dr Sabirin over it
04:32 - 04:36
despite his warnings that there's nothing valuable in it.
04:36 - 04:39
She is a very greedy person and
04:39 - 04:45
wanted to find out for herself. But as we know, the box just contained
04:45 - 04:49
deadly heat slash radiation and she was killed.
04:55 - 04:55
Mhm
04:58 - 05:02
War was also referenced in film nowhere
05:04 - 05:06
and the emotions surrounding it In
05:06 - 05:07
real life.
05:08 - 05:14
The character Benjamin train in vera Cruz actually was said to
05:14 - 05:17
have served in the civil war on the confederate side.
05:17 - 05:18
And
05:19 - 05:21
it's known that
05:21 - 05:27
he lost his home during this war. He states that his last battle was fought
05:28 - 05:30
on his home and he lost everything.
05:30 - 05:34
Which is why he's kind of a floater in this movie trying to find, you know,
05:34 - 05:37
a new foundation and purpose
05:38 - 05:41
which is common for war veterans at the time to come home
05:42 - 05:43
to a
05:44 - 05:47
a new society where gender roles are much different.
05:47 - 05:49
Their role in society is much different.
05:49 - 05:54
The men were struggling to refine their place in society.
05:55 - 06:02
So this is a kind of a direct reflection of how men in real life during the,
06:02 - 06:04
during World War Two were feeling,
06:06 - 06:09
you could also say that Charles castle and the big
06:09 - 06:13
knife was a reflection of these feelings as well because
06:14 - 06:18
you could compare him to a soldier that was drafted into
06:18 - 06:20
the war even though they don't want to be there,
06:20 - 06:22
he didn't want his job.
06:22 - 06:25
He was still forced to go anyway and
06:26 - 06:29
you could compare him to a soldier that lost his life in the
06:29 - 06:34
war because he felt trapped in his job and his life felt hopeless.
06:34 - 06:38
You know, not really much of a purpose. So he killed himself.
06:38 - 06:40
So there's kind of a big parallel there.
06:43 - 06:45
Another important aspect was
06:45 - 06:48
the female role in film nowhere and
06:48 - 06:54
mostly every film has a farm fatality that is deceitful and uses
06:55 - 06:57
sexual appeal and
06:58 - 07:00
men to get what they want.
07:01 - 07:01
But
07:02 - 07:07
I noticed the character Nina in veracruz was unique even though
07:07 - 07:11
she was a pickpocket and she stole from Benjamin train.
07:11 - 07:17
She there was one scene where she showed a lot of power which was when the brigade of
07:18 - 07:20
spanish soldiers were
07:21 - 07:25
on their conquest. You know, transport the countess
07:26 - 07:32
and they were attacked by a militant group of peasants and when when when the
07:33 - 07:35
a soldier that was
07:36 - 07:38
in control of the reins of the
07:38 - 07:43
lead horse was killed, she took it upon herself to rain the horses and was able to lead
07:44 - 07:46
the brigade out of the situation
07:48 - 07:50
and you usually don't see this
07:50 - 07:51
form of
07:51 - 07:55
power and strength and a female character because normally
07:55 - 07:59
the femme fatale a role is just deceitful and
08:00 - 08:03
does things through others rather than doing it.
08:04 - 08:04
Mhm
08:05 - 08:06
purely by herself.
08:07 - 08:13
But we can see traditional farm fatality roles in Kiss me, deadly
08:13 - 08:18
with lily carver who was driven by greed and the big knife in
08:18 - 08:24
the other female roles aside from Marion Castle who was Charles Castle's wife,
08:24 - 08:31
she was purely devoted to him. But the other females can be seen to only
08:32 - 08:36
be after Charles money as he was a wealthy man at the time.
08:40 - 08:41
All in all
08:42 - 08:46
vera cruz was drastically different in plot line to
08:46 - 08:49
the other to Kiss me deadly in the big knife
08:49 - 08:50
however it
08:51 - 08:54
they all bring similar feelings of
08:54 - 08:56
hopelessness which is
08:58 - 09:00
very common in film nowhere.
09:00 - 09:07
There was no instances of greed deceit which is also very common,
09:08 - 09:10
which just goes to show that even though in
09:10 - 09:13
film nowhere even if the plot is different,
09:14 - 09:14
the
09:15 - 09:17
key aspects are still the same
09:19 - 09:21
and it really just shows
09:21 - 09:23
the characters as having a
09:24 - 09:27
a poor outlook on life or really just not much
09:28 - 09:29
to look forward to.
09:31 - 09:34
And that concludes my presentation. Thank you
