  1. okay.
  2. I worked for four years in our school
  3. district staff development department and part of my job
  4. Was to provide professional learning and training for about 700 staff members.
  5. Well,
  6. this one for november is that it was my 1st november Professional learning day.
  7. We did something called a you pick six day where
  8. staff got to pick from six different sessions throughout the day
  9. And we as a staff development department provided about 60 different sessions.
  10. Now this was my first time presenting.
  11. So I took on three sessions for the day that I did
  12. independently three different habits that I
  13. created the learning for in the presentation
  14. And I co presented for another two sessions,
  15. Unfortunately,
  16. hours before our you pick six day, one of my co presenters
  17. and he asked if I could take over.
  18. Well
  19. it was his presentation and not mine and I only
  20. had a couple of slides that I was familiar with.
  21. So
  22. I sat down and I got a sticky note and I made a list of all the things I needed to do
  23. to be ready for tomorrow.
  24. Truth be told,
  25. I probably use three sticky notes by the time I was finished making my list
  26. and I looked at that list and I thought
  27. this is impossible.
  28. And then he said
  29. kelly. No, it's not.
  30. It's only impossible if you let it be impossible,
  31. you can do this.
  32. So I went through and prioritized which ones do I need to do right now.
  33. And I got started.
  34. I went through the slides, made sure that they were in the cracks sequence
  35. that they reflected the learning that the audience signed up for
  36. and made a few tweaks for my own personal presentation style
  37. and then I went through all the different learning
  38. modalities that we were using for the professional training,
  39. making sure that we were meeting all all the needs of all the attendees
  40. And lastly I needed to work on my timing's, so we have a strict 50 minutes
  41. to present and provide training.
  42. By this time it was about 9:00 at night
  43. And I practiced and I got to 60 minutes, I thought
  44. I'm gonna try this again.
  45. So I did it again and I got to 55 minutes.
  46. I thought all right,
  47. going in the right direction one more time and
  48. I'm going to have this down to 50 minutes.
  49. So a third time around
  50. and
  51. Unfortunately I was stuck at 55 minutes.
  52. So I thought, alright, it's midnight,
  53. How am I going to shave five minutes off of this presentation
  54. and still deliver what the audience signed up for
  55. now, as you probably know,
  56. shaving five minutes off the presentation can sometimes
  57. feel like an hour off of something.
  58. It's a big chunk of time when you're only talking about a 50 minute presentation.
  59. So I went through each side, thoughtfully
  60. shaved a little bit here and there being sure to continue to
  61. keep it sustained and cohesive and thoughtful to the needs of my learners
  62. And I got it down to 15 minutes.
  63. By this time it was about 1:00 AM,
  64. but I wasn't gonna be comfortable unless I really quickly
  65. made a list of things that I didn't want to
  66. forget the next day and put it out in front
  67. of me before I got started with that presentation.
  68. I ended up
  69. not needing the list after all, but
  70. it was good to have it there.
