00:01 - 00:01
Hi Everyone.
00:01 - 00:02
Welcome to Week 11.
00:03 - 00:06
This week we're getting along, as you see, we're into
00:06 - 00:10
lessons or classes 21 22 we're going to be talking
00:10 - 00:15
about presentations first in this week's during this week's lessons,
00:16 - 00:19
Uh and we're going to get to Article eight, which
00:19 - 00:20
is our last article for the semester.
00:21 - 00:24
Yeah, can you believe that were already this far along?
00:25 - 00:27
We're going to be talking about the schedule at the
00:27 - 00:31
beginning just so we can really realize where we are
00:31 - 00:33
and where you know what we need to do to
00:33 - 00:34
get to the finish line, so to speak.
00:35 - 00:39
Um But during this week we I really want to
00:39 - 00:44
talk about presentations first just to get your you guys
00:44 - 00:48
going on the idea and to get you going well
00:48 - 00:52
in advance because presentations are the last thing that we're
00:52 - 00:55
going to do in the course this semester.
00:56 - 00:59
Okay. And as I as you may remember, you know,
00:59 - 01:02
during the first week, I talked about all, you know,
01:02 - 01:04
all the things that we would do in the class
01:05 - 01:07
and I mentioned that we would finish this way that
01:08 - 01:08
we would have.
01:09 - 01:12
We go through our articles, we go through four articles
01:13 - 01:15
in the first half and then have a midterm exam
01:16 - 01:19
and then we do the same thing in the second
01:19 - 01:22
half, we go through the four articles and then have
01:22 - 01:23
our final exam.
01:24 - 01:29
And unlike, um unlike maybe some other classes, I don't
01:30 - 01:33
like to finish the, the semester, you know, our time
01:33 - 01:36
together. I don't like to finish that with you, kind
01:37 - 01:39
of taking an exam and then turning it in.
01:40 - 01:43
That's a that's a very kind of lonely in some
01:43 - 01:46
ways. A lonely way to finish the, you know what?
01:46 - 01:48
I hope it has been a good semester with you
01:48 - 01:51
chatting and you know, and and working together on lessons
01:52 - 01:52
with your group members.
01:53 - 01:58
And so at the end of our semester we're going
01:58 - 02:00
to do it and kind of reverse order a little
02:00 - 02:04
bit, we're going to finish our last article this week,
02:05 - 02:05
article AIDS.
02:06 - 02:11
And then we're going to start thinking about presentations and
02:11 - 02:14
start kind of working together with our group to to
02:14 - 02:16
figure that, you know, what we're going to focus on
02:17 - 02:17
what you want to do.
02:18 - 02:22
And and so that's the idea is that at the
02:22 - 02:26
end of the semester we will have already finished the
02:26 - 02:29
kind of work part, so to speak of, of the
02:29 - 02:34
semester. We will we will have finished the writings.
02:35 - 02:38
By then Writing number two, you're already well into and
02:38 - 02:40
you're going to need to turn that in by the
02:40 - 02:44
deadline. I've already given you feedback for that and I've
02:44 - 02:47
talked with students about this uh you know, to help
02:47 - 02:49
if you need help, you can come during my office
02:50 - 02:51
hours and ask for help.
02:52 - 02:55
Um But but writing number two, we're going to be
02:55 - 02:58
done with writing to and we're going to finish the
03:00 - 03:03
final exam about the final four articles in our course,
03:04 - 03:06
or articles 567 and eight.
03:06 - 03:09
And then we have the exam and then we'll have
03:10 - 03:11
a presentation right?
03:12 - 03:15
We'll be able to make presentations with our groups and
03:16 - 03:18
you guys will have a lot of options about how
03:18 - 03:19
to do that, and I'll talk about that in the
03:20 - 03:23
first part of this lesson when I get into that.
03:24 - 03:27
Um But but the last thing we're going to do
03:27 - 03:31
as part of that presentation also is we're going to
03:31 - 03:34
have a chance for you to give feedback to other
03:34 - 03:37
groups about how they did with their presentations.
03:38 - 03:41
Okay, So the so in this course, you know, we
03:41 - 03:43
have three writings, right?
03:44 - 03:47
And we we finished writing one in the first half,
03:48 - 03:51
we're we're working on writing to now, which is the
03:51 - 03:55
longer writing the essay, as you know, and then when
03:55 - 03:57
we get to the end of the semester, we're going
03:58 - 03:59
to, you know, have the mid to have the final
04:00 - 04:03
exam. And then after the final exam we're going to
04:03 - 04:08
have um our presentations, we're going to watch other groups
04:09 - 04:13
presentations and then we're going to respond in writing The
04:14 - 04:14
third. Writing.
04:15 - 04:17
Writing# three for our course is going to be
04:17 - 04:20
just a brief response to the presentation.
04:22 - 04:26
Okay, So we're very much finishing the semester on kind
04:26 - 04:30
of letting students, letting you guys give your opinions and
04:30 - 04:33
give your perspective about, you know, what we've talked about
04:33 - 04:37
this semester, and uh and allowing you to do that
04:37 - 04:40
in writing individually um as well.
04:41 - 04:44
Okay, so it's a pretty good, I hope you like
04:44 - 04:46
it. I think it's a it's a pretty good way
04:46 - 04:50
to finish this semester and and again hopefully it'll be
04:50 - 04:54
enjoyable. Not not not quite as tense as some of
04:54 - 04:57
the other things we've done, maybe like exams, you know?
04:57 - 05:04
Uh Okay so presentations, again, we're finishing up here, we
05:04 - 05:07
still have about a month, you know, of classes left
05:08 - 05:11
or so you know, we have we have about four
05:11 - 05:11
weeks left.
05:12 - 05:14
Um but it's time for us to look ahead because
05:15 - 05:19
again, as I said, my my class, I structured maybe
05:19 - 05:22
a little differently than some of the other classes that
05:22 - 05:25
you might might be having this semester.
05:26 - 05:30
So schedule, let's take a look.
05:30 - 05:33
Oh, I should mention here, as I mentioned in the
05:33 - 05:36
top there, that there's no warm up video for this
05:36 - 05:36
week's article.
05:38 - 05:41
You know, we We normally begin with a warm up
05:42 - 05:44
for the article of the week and we have Article
05:44 - 05:47
eight this week, but I'm not going to give you
05:47 - 05:48
a warm up video for two reasons.
05:50 - 05:52
Number one is that I did, you know that I
05:52 - 05:56
need to and I would rather talk about the presentation,
05:57 - 06:00
you know, to get you started, get you, your group's
06:00 - 06:04
thinking about your presentations and to uh you know, that
06:05 - 06:07
we actually have three articles for this week that your
06:08 - 06:09
group is able to choose from.
06:10 - 06:13
So I didn't want to overwhelm you with three warmups,
06:14 - 06:17
you know, one for each of the three articles, but
06:17 - 06:21
also I think it's unnecessary because as I've noted before,
06:22 - 06:25
the three articles that we have as a choice for
06:25 - 06:29
you this week are all kind of related to the
06:29 - 06:32
articles that we've already studied in this in this semester.
06:33 - 06:36
Right? And we'll talk about that more, but we don't
06:36 - 06:37
need to warm up on the context.
06:38 - 06:41
We very much know those from having looked at other
06:42 - 06:45
other articles early in the semester, even just last week.
06:47 - 06:51
Mm Okay, so let's look at our schedule just briefly,
06:51 - 06:53
I've already mentioned most of what we need to know
06:53 - 06:53
about the schedule.
06:54 - 06:56
But again, you can see we've gone through a lot
06:57 - 06:59
of, you know, things in the course.
06:59 - 07:03
We've We've gone past the midterm exam, we studied article
07:04 - 07:07
567 and now this week you can see we're into
07:07 - 07:11
week 11 here And you can see that I'm talking
07:11 - 07:16
about presentations and article eight and And then we're going
07:16 - 07:18
to, you know, talk about Article eight a little bit
07:18 - 07:20
as well, that's what we're doing this week.
07:21 - 07:24
And so next week, Which is only week 12.
07:24 - 07:26
Again, we we we go all the way to end
07:26 - 07:30
of to the end of week 15 here, You know,
07:30 - 07:33
to get our 30 classes, which all classes that he
07:33 - 07:36
will have 30 at least in this format.
07:37 - 07:40
All classes that have Uh this kind of to to
07:41 - 07:44
meeting twice a week for a 75 minutes each.
07:45 - 07:48
That would be the offline equivalent that we normally would
07:48 - 07:49
have, but we've been doing it online.
07:50 - 07:54
But The point is, is that next week you can
07:55 - 07:57
see in week 12 that we're going to be getting
07:58 - 08:00
right into the final exam review.
08:02 - 08:04
Next week, I'm going to talk about the final exam,
08:05 - 08:07
you know, the format because the format is going to
08:07 - 08:09
be a little bit different and I'll tell you more
08:09 - 08:13
about that later, but but but generally it's going to
08:13 - 08:16
be very similar, very similar, but a little bit different.
08:16 - 08:18
And so I need to tell you about that in
08:18 - 08:21
the review and then we're going to have a chance
08:21 - 08:23
to go over your article questions.
08:24 - 08:27
So once again, I'll emphasis to to you and your
08:28 - 08:31
group members, just like in the first half for the
08:31 - 08:35
review, I would like you to have your questions ready
08:35 - 08:39
for all four articles before This.
08:40 - 08:42
This week begins on the 17th because I'm going to
08:43 - 08:46
record ahead of time and I'm probably going to need
08:46 - 08:49
just like the midterm, I'll probably have to add, you
08:49 - 08:52
know, I'll record most of my Most of the questions
08:53 - 08:56
for the first three articles and then for the 4th
08:56 - 09:00
1, Well maybe need to add one more short video,
09:00 - 09:03
15 minute video, just to discuss the questions that you
09:03 - 09:04
have about Article eight.
09:04 - 09:07
I don't know, it depends on what you guys give
09:07 - 09:11
me. Okay, so I'll be looking but again, generally I
09:11 - 09:15
remember that I allow you to I allow you to
09:15 - 09:18
form the questions that you have for the first three
09:18 - 09:20
readings really for all four readings.
09:21 - 09:25
I let you form those questions ah mm You know
09:26 - 09:27
any time that you guys wanted to do it?
09:27 - 09:29
You could you could have already been doing it after
09:29 - 09:33
each reading or maybe right now you need to go
09:33 - 09:38
very quickly uh and finish up all the questions that
09:38 - 09:40
you're going to have for each of the four readings.
09:40 - 09:44
Okay? But however your group did it, you guys do
09:44 - 09:47
need to finish those questions and and turn them in
09:49 - 09:54
Again before the the week 12 lessons began on the
09:54 - 09:55
17th. Okay.
09:56 - 09:59
So again um week 17 is when we're going to
09:59 - 10:03
be just focusing on the final exam, we're going to
10:03 - 10:06
be reviewing and talking about questions that you have and
10:06 - 10:08
you can see you're also going to be finishing up
10:09 - 10:09
writing# two.
10:10 - 10:14
Okay. If you haven't already, again during this week you
10:14 - 10:18
probably have time, you should be working already on writing
10:19 - 10:21
number two on revising it.
10:21 - 10:22
But you have a fool.
10:23 - 10:25
I'm giving you a really long kind of period to
10:25 - 10:27
work on this on the writing number two.
10:28 - 10:30
The reason I'm giving you so much time on writing
10:31 - 10:33
to is is to give you time to again too,
10:34 - 10:35
in case you're busy with other classes.
10:36 - 10:37
I know that happens at the end of the semester,
10:38 - 10:41
you get busier but also to give students a chance
10:42 - 10:44
to come and talk to me in my office time
10:44 - 10:47
if you need personal help because sometimes it's it's well
10:48 - 10:51
I wouldn't say sometimes I would say almost always it's
10:51 - 10:55
better it's better for you to talk to me if
10:55 - 10:58
you don't understand, if you can't understand my kind of
10:58 - 11:00
my rubric and my table that I have.
11:02 - 11:04
Um then then it's good to come and talk to
11:05 - 11:06
me and I can make that clear to you.
11:06 - 11:08
I can explain to you what exactly what I meant
11:09 - 11:11
by all those exes and the comments that I wrote.
11:11 - 11:15
But I think most students seem to understand my system
11:15 - 11:17
and what I mean by the comments that I give
11:18 - 11:20
and we've had practice in writing one and now writing
11:21 - 11:25
to so hopefully um you should have a pretty good
11:25 - 11:29
grasp of that because again, I worked, I developed that
11:29 - 11:32
that style of using that rubric with the pointing out
11:33 - 11:35
what where you lost points and why and how to
11:35 - 11:36
fix them.
11:37 - 11:39
I developed that after getting a lot of feedback from
11:39 - 11:43
students. So, so hopefully I you find it useful and
11:44 - 11:47
especially um hopefully, you know what to do.
11:47 - 11:51
You know you're able to address the points that you
11:51 - 11:52
know where you lost points.
11:53 - 11:55
You're able to do something about that and increase your
11:55 - 11:57
score. Okay?
11:57 - 12:00
So oh and I should make a quick note is
12:00 - 12:02
that when you evaluate my course at the end of
12:02 - 12:06
the semester, I definitely would appreciate any comments that you
12:06 - 12:09
have about that, about my rubric or about anything else
12:10 - 12:12
that in the course to how to you know, for
12:12 - 12:15
me for how to make the course better for future
12:15 - 12:18
students. Because that's how I've developed my course through the
12:18 - 12:22
years. As I look at the feedback that you guys
12:22 - 12:24
give me, I look at how you do, I look
12:24 - 12:26
at your the quality of your work and to see
12:26 - 12:29
if I've helped you and where maybe I haven't helped
12:29 - 12:31
you as much as you know are in a way
12:31 - 12:34
that you need and so you can help me with
12:34 - 12:38
that by giving me comments in the evaluation at the
12:38 - 12:38
end of the semester.
12:39 - 12:40
Okay. Okay.
12:41 - 12:44
So Again, you can see getting back to our schedule
12:44 - 12:48
here. You can see that we're going to um we're
12:48 - 12:52
going to review for the final exam next week, week
12:52 - 12:55
12 and then that following week we're going to have
12:55 - 12:56
the final exam.
12:58 - 13:01
And I can tell you that unlike, I can tell
13:01 - 13:04
you one basic point about the final exam, is that
13:04 - 13:07
it is going to be different than the midterm exam,
13:07 - 13:09
I'm not going to.
13:10 - 13:15
Um I'm not going to kind of need for students
13:15 - 13:18
to, you know, to to work their schedule to to
13:19 - 13:22
do the to meet that the timing for the exam
13:22 - 13:22
as much.
13:23 - 13:26
I'll tell you more about it, but hopefully I'll make
13:26 - 13:27
it smoother than the midterm exam.
13:28 - 13:31
Most students took the exam during the two hour period
13:31 - 13:33
and they were fine and it was no problem.
13:33 - 13:37
Uh Some students needed to readjust their schedules or and
13:37 - 13:39
I needed to work with them to get the exam
13:39 - 13:43
done, but hopefully the final exam will work out more
13:43 - 13:45
smoothly than the midterm, you know, for those students who
13:46 - 13:49
had to readjust with me uh to take it.
13:50 - 13:53
Okay? But in week 13 you will take the exam
13:54 - 13:56
and then you can see, I'm going to have what's
13:56 - 14:02
called a presentation workshop that day presentation workshop you can
14:02 - 14:05
see is just before the next week where we actually
14:05 - 14:09
give the presentations, so that presentation workshop is coming very
14:10 - 14:13
late. Okay, I'm giving you information about the presentations today
14:15 - 14:17
to get you started because by the time in two
14:17 - 14:19
weeks later, two weeks from from today.
14:20 - 14:22
Two weeks, well a little bit more than two weeks
14:22 - 14:26
from today is when you'll be kind of at the
14:26 - 14:29
end before you need to turn in your presentations and
14:29 - 14:31
then give them Okay?
14:32 - 14:35
So this presentation workshop that comes after the final exam,
14:36 - 14:42
that presentation workshop will be alive through zoom class where
14:42 - 14:45
students are able to talk to me and get any
14:45 - 14:47
last minute help that you need for your presentations.
14:49 - 14:52
Okay? And so that will be done during our class
14:52 - 14:55
period for the second class.
14:55 - 14:57
That week, I'll tell you more in the next part
14:57 - 14:58
of this lesson.
