00:01 - 00:02
Hi everybody, how you guys doing?
00:02 - 00:03
My name is Jared tucker,
00:03 - 00:05
I'm currently in my second semester here at the
00:05 - 00:09
NBA program at Bowling Green State University um where
00:09 - 00:11
I also received my undergraduate degree from with a
00:11 - 00:14
bachelor's and sports management and a minor in marketing.
00:14 - 00:17
But uh currently I'm working as 1/7 grade
00:17 - 00:20
boys basketball coach at Van Buren Middle School,
00:20 - 00:24
which is about 20 minutes away from Bowling green right outside Findlay Ohio.
00:24 - 00:26
And then I also worked part time at Chipotle,
00:27 - 00:29
but with all that being said, I just wanna let you guys know, I'm
00:30 - 00:31
extremely excited to
00:31 - 00:37
talk to you guys about who I am as a leader and how I think being an effective leader is.
00:37 - 00:41
But to kick things off, I just wanted to start off with my vision statement
00:42 - 00:43
and that is
00:43 - 00:46
to influence guide and motivate people to become the
00:46 - 00:48
best version of themselves while maintaining good characters,
00:48 - 00:50
strong integrity and love for other people.
00:52 - 00:53
Now, I think it's very important to
00:54 - 00:56
influence guide and motivate other people to
00:56 - 00:58
be the best version of themselves because,
00:59 - 01:03
you know, as a person, you always want to see the best of one another.
01:03 - 01:06
And I think if you do these things, it will help other people, you know,
01:06 - 01:10
stay motivated or you know, achieve their goals whatever the case may be.
01:10 - 01:14
Um, I know for myself, it's something I've always had in my corner,
01:14 - 01:17
which is a blessing just because I've always had people tell me
01:17 - 01:22
or guide me motivate me or influence me in the right direction.
01:22 - 01:25
I've never been steered wrong and that's honestly the reason I'm here today,
01:26 - 01:29
and I have the opportunity to become the first person in my family too,
01:29 - 01:34
get their Master's degree. So I'm just very blessed and humbled to be here today
01:34 - 01:36
and you know, I think also with that,
01:36 - 01:39
just having good character integrity and love for one another,
01:39 - 01:43
I think just having good character means you have your head on straight and you know,
01:43 - 01:45
you're not trying to do anything fancy,
01:45 - 01:48
but you're you're always have the best interests of other people.
01:48 - 01:51
And that also comes with having strong integrity,
01:51 - 01:55
which is what you do when nobody's looking, Do you work hard or are you slacking off?
01:55 - 01:56
But also,
01:57 - 01:59
you know, they may not be the case, but you can always want
02:00 - 02:01
Love one Another.
02:02 - 02:03
You know,
02:04 - 02:05
I just think that means you care about people,
02:05 - 02:09
you wanna you wanna see the best out of them and uh you know,
02:09 - 02:11
you're you're always there for other people.
02:11 - 02:15
So that's why I think this vision vision statement best fits me personally.
02:15 - 02:21
But next I just wanna talk about fundamental truth and I think
02:21 - 02:25
the best way to describe that for myself is that I don't wait for change to happen,
02:25 - 02:27
but to be the change.
02:27 - 02:31
And I think that just comes with leading instead of following number one,
02:32 - 02:33
um
02:33 - 02:35
which means that,
02:35 - 02:36
you know,
02:36 - 02:40
instead of, you know, waiting on somebody else to step up and do something,
02:40 - 02:41
You do it yourself.
02:41 - 02:44
All right. I think we have the opportunity as leaders to,
02:45 - 02:48
you know, have many, many opportunities in his lifetime too.
02:49 - 02:49
Um
02:50 - 02:54
help lead other people or to influence other people whatever the case may be.
02:54 - 02:56
But if you wait and you sit
02:56 - 03:00
for somebody else to kind of take action, then you're doing yourself a disservice.
03:00 - 03:01
Okay?
03:02 - 03:06
And then, um, I just think that comes along with, you know,
03:06 - 03:09
just being confident in yourself, being confident that you can do the job,
03:09 - 03:12
you could, you could do however good somebody else is doing.
03:12 - 03:15
There's there's no limitations to what you can do in this life.
03:15 - 03:19
Um, I think you just have to kind of put your mind to it and trust that,
03:20 - 03:24
you know, you have the capability and the mindset to do anything that you want,
03:24 - 03:26
but you have to be confident yourself.
03:26 - 03:28
And then lastly, I just think
03:29 - 03:33
change is always going to be constant because things are always changing.
03:33 - 03:37
Technologies, changing uh, cars are changing whatever the case may be.
03:37 - 03:40
Um, you know, a lot of things are changing. For example. Um,
03:41 - 03:44
when Covid 19 1st hit, nobody would ever thought it would have impact, you know,
03:44 - 03:45
the states the way it did.
03:45 - 03:48
But look how we, how we are now,
03:48 - 03:52
you know, we have covid protocols, we have Covid tests,
03:53 - 03:56
hospitals are very, very drastically
03:57 - 04:00
increased with capacity whatever the case may be.
04:00 - 04:01
Um,
04:02 - 04:03
it's very, very
04:03 - 04:06
frightening. But at the same time, um, we're adapting to it.
04:06 - 04:09
We're changing, we're changing society, we're changing the way we live,
04:09 - 04:11
we got mask now we have
04:11 - 04:14
you know precautions of whatever the case may be
04:14 - 04:14
but
04:15 - 04:19
you know I just think that change is always gonna be there so we have to be able
04:19 - 04:23
to adapt and be able to change with that so why not take action and be the change
04:24 - 04:26
and you know I just think that
04:26 - 04:27
kinda
04:27 - 04:30
with that being said the key values for myself as far as
04:31 - 04:32
you know my leadership
04:33 - 04:38
and what I believe in is you know those values, our work ethic, responsibility,
04:38 - 04:40
communication, integrity,
04:40 - 04:44
respect and being personable and I just kind of want to touch
04:44 - 04:47
on two of these and the first one being work ethic,
04:47 - 04:49
it doesn't matter what you do in this life,
04:49 - 04:52
you can always control two things and that's your attitude and your effort.
04:53 - 04:57
I think being able to have a great work ethic will
04:57 - 04:59
get you a long way in this life
04:59 - 05:00
because
05:00 - 05:03
no matter what you do nothing is going to be handed to you.
05:03 - 05:05
You have to work hard alright.
05:05 - 05:08
There's always somebody else that wants your position or you know once the
05:08 - 05:12
same car as you or even wants the same girl as you.
05:12 - 05:13
Whatever the case may be.
05:14 - 05:17
But you know I think we have to really sit ourselves down
05:17 - 05:20
and work hard if we want to get to where we want to
05:20 - 05:23
get to in this life and I think that's why work ethic is
05:23 - 05:26
one of the most valuable values you can have as being a leader
05:27 - 05:30
and then the second one being is just being personable and
05:30 - 05:32
that just means getting to know people on a personal level,
05:32 - 05:36
I think that just shows you care about you know other people
05:36 - 05:38
and that you really want to get to know them um just
05:38 - 05:42
so you could maybe get a better understanding of what people struggle
05:42 - 05:46
to struggle through or you know maybe how they grew up,
05:46 - 05:48
you know, you never know who you might run into
05:49 - 05:50
as far as
05:50 - 05:53
you know, who you come in contact with when you
05:53 - 05:58
when you work or as for my case who I come in contact with as a coach, okay,
05:58 - 06:01
kids are going to have different backgrounds and you can always
06:03 - 06:08
get on a kid this, you know the same kid that you know, however he might have grew up,
06:08 - 06:10
he could have grew up in a bad household and one
06:10 - 06:12
kid could have grew up in the good household alright,
06:12 - 06:17
so you have to learn how to understand and you know approach different situations,
06:17 - 06:18
but
06:19 - 06:22
with that being said and then just my overall philosophy,
06:22 - 06:25
I think my goal as a leader is to inspire and motivate those,
06:25 - 06:29
I lied to be the best version of themselves and to better their lives,
06:29 - 06:32
their family lives and to change the world as we know it.
06:35 - 06:37
I just want to see the best out of people and
06:37 - 06:39
I just want them to give me their best effort,
06:39 - 06:42
but I want them to change the world.
06:42 - 06:44
We're in a situation where
06:44 - 06:45
you know, we're young,
06:45 - 06:50
we have the opportunities to influence and inspire the next generation of people
06:51 - 06:55
so that when we die our legacy still lives on and you know the things and knowledge
06:55 - 06:58
that we teach other people will still be available
06:58 - 07:00
to those who are being brought up now.
07:00 - 07:01
So I think,
07:02 - 07:07
you know, we in this age group are in a very, very critical stage um
07:08 - 07:12
of influencing and helping people and raising up the next generation of leaders.
07:12 - 07:15
So I think it's our job as leaders to
07:16 - 07:19
you know, help them grow as people and
07:20 - 07:21
grow as leaders.
07:21 - 07:25
I just think we're in such a vital spot that you know,
07:25 - 07:27
we have to keep our head on straight and we have to you know
07:27 - 07:31
take in as much information as we can so we could you know,
07:31 - 07:33
help the next generation of people and that's
07:33 - 07:36
why I think this philosophy best fits me.
07:37 - 07:41
But the next thing up, I just want to talk about dominant leadership style,
07:41 - 07:44
I think you know mine personally is being a
07:44 - 07:48
transformational leader because I believe in the change of individuals
07:49 - 07:52
and I want people who are followers to become leaders
07:52 - 07:53
and
07:53 - 07:56
you know also I just think that
07:56 - 07:59
being a transformational leader enhances motivation,
07:59 - 08:01
people's performance and morale
08:01 - 08:05
for for followers um and that just means you know,
08:05 - 08:07
people who are not leaders currently
08:07 - 08:08
and then also
08:09 - 08:10
another
08:11 - 08:13
a couple of key things I noticed with just being a transformational
08:13 - 08:16
leader is being a role model for people who are not leaders,
08:16 - 08:17
you know,
08:17 - 08:22
being that person to help um you know more more people want to be leaders and
08:22 - 08:26
then just being able to challenge people to work hard and own up to their own
08:26 - 08:30
work, you know, just challenging people to work harder and to to accomplish,
08:30 - 08:31
you know,
08:31 - 08:35
goals or whatever the case may be achievements and then also
08:35 - 08:38
just being able to understand strengths and weaknesses as other,
08:38 - 08:39
you know,
08:39 - 08:40
I think as a leader we're in a very
08:40 - 08:43
very um interesting position just because you know,
08:43 - 08:48
we get the the whole just of an organization, so
08:48 - 08:49
you know, being able to
08:50 - 08:55
see people's strengths and weaknesses will allow us to help our team better to
08:55 - 08:59
put people in the areas we feel that would best fit their strengths,
08:59 - 09:01
but also helping them work on their weaknesses as well.
09:02 - 09:05
Um and then also I just think that,
09:05 - 09:09
you know, just challenging people to work harder is very, very key.
09:09 - 09:11
You know, we want to see people, you know,
09:12 - 09:16
be be the best versions of themselves, we want to see them, you know, get promotions,
09:16 - 09:20
we want to see them, you know, make more money, whatever the case may be,
09:20 - 09:23
I know for myself, I'd rather somebody have it than me,
09:23 - 09:25
so that's just myself.
09:25 - 09:29
And then also just as the video, we,
09:29 - 09:33
we were able to watch and get in class about
09:33 - 09:37
leadership styles between being a geese eagle or a turkey.
09:37 - 09:37
Um,
09:37 - 09:42
I believe that I'm in between a geese and the eagle and
09:42 - 09:45
the reason being in between both is because as a geese,
09:45 - 09:46
you know,
09:46 - 09:46
I
09:47 - 09:49
enjoyed working in a team environment
09:49 - 09:53
and I think I'm a very sociable and personable person.
09:53 - 09:56
So you know, a team environment is something I'm
09:57 - 10:00
very, very comfortable in. You know, I'm not afraid to
10:01 - 10:04
speak up or you know, I'm not afraid to approach anybody.
10:04 - 10:08
You know, I, I see everybody is the same. So you know, that's another reason.
10:08 - 10:11
I I think a geese is the best way to describe me.
10:11 - 10:13
And then also, um you know,
10:13 - 10:17
I do sometimes like I want to hear opinions from other people before
10:17 - 10:19
I make a decision just because it's not always all about me.
10:20 - 10:22
You know, it's about the best interests of the team or
10:22 - 10:24
best interest of somebody else. And you know, if
10:25 - 10:25
I'm having
10:26 - 10:27
hard time, you know,
10:27 - 10:30
picking a decision or having a hard time trying to grasp the concept,
10:30 - 10:33
I'll ask people for their opinions or you know,
10:34 - 10:38
things of that nature when, when needed. But then also I believe that
10:40 - 10:41
the eagle is also another
10:42 - 10:46
great example of my leadership style just because I do believe I can make strong and
10:47 - 10:48
hard decisions
10:48 - 10:50
and I'm very detail oriented
10:51 - 10:53
and I have room for minimal mistakes
10:53 - 10:54
and I would just have like
10:55 - 10:58
people ask me questions before they do something
10:58 - 11:00
rather than try it themselves and get it wrong
11:00 - 11:02
because that's when I get upset.
11:02 - 11:07
And for example, you know, that's an area in coaching that you know, I had to
11:08 - 11:08
kind of
11:09 - 11:13
work on just because you know, they're in seventh grade, you know,
11:13 - 11:17
the 12 and 13 year olds and you know, they're, they're usually always confused.
11:17 - 11:21
So you know, I give them a little bit of leeway and stuff like that, but you know,
11:21 - 11:24
I always tell them if you guys don't know what's going on,
11:24 - 11:26
I'd rather you ask me now than to
11:27 - 11:32
ask after because if you get it wrong, I'm going to be upset.
11:32 - 11:35
So you know, they've gotten a lot better at,
11:36 - 11:39
you know, just asking questions and not being afraid to ask me anything.
11:39 - 11:43
So I'm very, very blessed and thankful that you know,
11:43 - 11:46
I was able to help them in that area and then also um
11:49 - 11:53
I just feel like being a mix between the both would best fit me just
11:53 - 11:57
because I feel like if you're too strong in one area and weekend another,
11:57 - 12:01
um it's not going to benefit you, but I still have a lot of,
12:01 - 12:05
a lot of room for improvement, but I just feel like these that would best um
12:06 - 12:09
resemble fi my leadership style and then last but not least
12:10 - 12:12
um what what I need
12:13 - 12:15
to secure myself as an effective leader.
12:15 - 12:17
Number one is, just
12:18 - 12:19
learn to lead by example.
12:19 - 12:22
Um I think as a leader, you need to learn to
12:24 - 12:27
lead by example, just because you have people looking up to you,
12:27 - 12:29
you have, you know,
12:30 - 12:34
maybe in my instance right now younger people looking up to me um
12:34 - 12:36
on whatever you know,
12:37 - 12:41
a player is or what, what a successful person is and you know,
12:41 - 12:45
I just want to give them the best possible me.
12:45 - 12:48
So that, that's one, Number one, number two is just, you know,
12:48 - 12:50
taking responsibility, whether it's,
12:52 - 12:54
you know, taking, uh for example,
12:54 - 12:59
right now taking a loss and putting the responsibility on myself and saying, hey,
12:59 - 13:01
that that loss is on me,
13:01 - 13:05
I didn't do a good job of doing this and I don't want you guys to feel like, you know,
13:05 - 13:06
you guys didn't do enough.
13:06 - 13:09
Um and then number three is just being a great communicator.
13:09 - 13:12
Um I think as a great or as a leader,
13:12 - 13:15
you have to be able to communicate with whoever it is,
13:16 - 13:19
okay. Um having being a great communicator is something that
13:20 - 13:22
it will take you long in any,
13:22 - 13:27
any career and I just think you need to have that in your arsenal as a leader.
13:27 - 13:29
And then number four is just being confident,
13:30 - 13:32
being confident in yourself, um
13:33 - 13:34
you know, being confident,
13:34 - 13:36
other people are trusting that they'll do the right thing
13:36 - 13:38
and that they'll get the work done when needed,
13:39 - 13:41
And then number five is just know how to develop a team,
13:42 - 13:44
okay, just knowing who your personnel is,
13:44 - 13:49
knowing who you have around you are and how to pretty much put a team together and how,
13:49 - 13:53
you know, people's strengths, you know, will, you know,
13:53 - 13:56
be work adjacent to people's weaknesses and stuff like that,
13:56 - 13:58
and then number six and number seven,
13:58 - 14:00
just being humble and being able to connect with others,
14:01 - 14:03
um I think being humble is really key
14:03 - 14:05
and that kind of goes off of, do you know,
14:05 - 14:09
just taking responsibility and just being able to
14:09 - 14:10
connect with others on a personal level,
14:11 - 14:15
um I think, you know, great leaders, you know, do all the all these things
14:15 - 14:16
and
14:16 - 14:17
you know,
14:18 - 14:21
I'm just very blessed and very thankful that I'm
14:21 - 14:24
in a leadership opportunity right now and you know,
14:24 - 14:26
being a leader is much more than
14:26 - 14:28
what people think, I think we're in a very,
