00:01 - 00:02
Hello, everybody.
00:03 - 00:05
I'm here to present to you my action research project,
00:05 - 00:10
which was over dance for special education students, specifically in
00:10 - 00:12
a high school public education setting.
00:15 - 00:19
So to begin, the background of my study really is
00:19 - 00:22
the whole reason I selected it because I am a
00:22 - 00:26
dance teacher in a public high school and I see
00:26 - 00:28
a lot of students without the opportunity to take my
00:29 - 00:31
class. And these students are typically the special education population.
00:33 - 00:35
Out of a program of 150 students.
00:36 - 00:38
I have three that get to come to my class
00:39 - 00:42
from our a C C self contained program.
00:44 - 00:49
Okay, not all high schools in Texas have dance programs,
00:50 - 00:53
and I think it's really important to advocate for those.
00:54 - 00:56
And that's what I selected as tthe e importance of
00:56 - 00:56
my study.
00:57 - 00:59
Like to use my data to advocate for inclusion of
01:00 - 01:04
dance programs into special education programs in curriculums, be it
01:05 - 01:08
I come to them and within their own classroom or
01:08 - 01:08
they come to me.
01:10 - 01:16
Yes, three questions I searched to answer were, if the
01:16 - 01:20
three participants in my study improved in communication both verbal
01:20 - 01:24
and nonverbal, their confidence and their motor skill and physical
01:24 - 01:32
ability. My literature review covered three different sections, the first
01:32 - 01:36
being the research done on benefits of dance and general,
01:36 - 01:40
in which there is countless of research done on the
01:40 - 01:45
physical, cognitive, emotional, all the source of benefits of dance,
01:45 - 01:46
mostly health related.
01:50 - 01:52
Moving on the next section of my lit review WAAS,
01:54 - 01:58
the studies done on special education and the needs of
01:59 - 02:01
students with disabilities to experience movement practices.
02:03 - 02:08
And the studies show that the benefits are even more
02:08 - 02:13
prominent in those with physical or learning disabilities than n
02:13 - 02:14
able bodied students.
02:15 - 02:19
And lastly, the need for this curriculum in high schools.
02:19 - 02:24
Their studies show that thes sort of elective offered at
02:24 - 02:26
the high school level can improve graduation rates.
02:28 - 02:33
Yeah, so my participants in the study were three special
02:33 - 02:36
education students who are currently in my program at Camera
02:36 - 02:36
High School.
02:37 - 02:40
There in the same class period, all female and sophomore
02:41 - 02:44
students. Two of the students are had been in my
02:44 - 02:47
dance program before and one of them was the first
02:47 - 02:52
timer. They all have very broad, a very broad range
02:52 - 02:56
of their level of ability in communication and skill.
02:57 - 03:00
The materials I used to collect data were simple surveys
03:01 - 03:04
for the students and mostly my notes and my own
03:04 - 03:05
personal writing systems.
03:08 - 03:13
My procedure for the research was I simply collected data
03:13 - 03:15
by what I observed in my class.
03:16 - 03:21
So as I was teaching, we performed different parts of
03:21 - 03:24
the class and I took notes and ended up grading
03:25 - 03:26
them on a scale from 1 to 5.
03:27 - 03:30
So one being well below typical performance and five being
03:30 - 03:35
well above typical performance in many different skill sets.
03:37 - 03:39
I did link my data here, but I don't think
03:39 - 03:41
it's going to show you, so I'm just going to
03:41 - 03:43
keep moving on a group.
03:44 - 03:47
So I took that data for 10 days in a
03:47 - 03:51
row and I had certain skills that I have them
03:51 - 03:54
do every single day so I could track those areas
03:54 - 03:55
I was looking for.
03:56 - 04:00
I first looked for the physical component components of wth
04:00 - 04:04
e motor skills, so things like coordination, balance, strength and
04:05 - 04:05
weight shifting.
04:06 - 04:09
The second area I looked up was the more cognitive
04:10 - 04:16
abilities of dance, which included memorizing movement and also following
04:17 - 04:20
or mirroring movement as it was being demonstrated.
04:21 - 04:25
Lastly, the area I looked into was the emotional growth
04:26 - 04:29
So I kept track of their mood and demeanor before
04:29 - 04:31
and after class each day.
04:32 - 04:34
And based on my knowledge of the students, I was
04:34 - 04:39
able to give them a rating on how much they
04:39 - 04:41
were willing to participate that day.
04:43 - 04:47
Okay, the analysis of my data, O C.
04:48 - 04:49
We got a broken link.
04:49 - 04:49
It's okay.
04:49 - 04:50
I'm gonna keep going.
04:51 - 04:53
What I did to analyze the data is I simply
04:54 - 04:56
put all of their ratings into a line graph.
04:57 - 04:58
So the line graph.
04:58 - 05:03
I was easily able to find the trends in each
05:03 - 05:06
category to see where there was growth, to see if
05:07 - 05:10
they remained stagnant throughout the 10 days and to see
05:10 - 05:12
on which days it might have fallen a little bit
05:12 - 05:14
lower. Fan usual.
05:14 - 05:17
I separated the line graphs into the three categories of
05:18 - 05:21
motor skill, cognitive and emotional growth.
05:29 - 05:42
Mhm for my results, I found that there were consistently
05:43 - 05:47
upward trends at some point during the 10 days in
05:48 - 05:50
for each of the participants in each of the categories,
05:53 - 05:59
What wasn't necessarily consistent waas if they maintained the growth
06:01 - 06:02
or if they correlated to each other.
06:04 - 06:06
What I found was that there are so many variables,
06:06 - 06:11
especially for these specific students of how they perform that
06:11 - 06:13
day. I tried to correlate.
06:15 - 06:16
Was there mood low that day?
06:16 - 06:19
And that's why they didn't perform a swell and there
06:19 - 06:20
was really no correlation there.
06:20 - 06:23
I had days where the students, one of my students,
06:24 - 06:26
I might have rated at it, too, on their willingness
06:27 - 06:27
to participate.
06:28 - 06:30
But they had one of their highest scoring days in
06:30 - 06:31
the motor skills.
06:32 - 06:37
I think it's just because the variety of what their
06:37 - 06:43
disability limits them to do between all three participants.
06:46 - 06:51
One of them has already great balance and strength, where
06:51 - 06:57
another has little to no string but can memorize choreography
06:58 - 06:59
really, really well.
07:00 - 07:02
So I think it just depends on the individual kid.
07:02 - 07:07
But what I can say for certain is that they
07:07 - 07:12
each grew and showed days or they did improve on
07:12 - 07:16
their skills, so I can only imagine what they would
07:16 - 07:18
be able to dio moving forward.
07:18 - 07:27
If this research research lasted longer than 10 days, that
07:27 - 07:30
leads into my conclusion and the limitations of the study.
07:31 - 07:34
The small sample size was a huge limitation of the
07:34 - 07:38
study and that there's only one of me I wish
07:38 - 07:40
I could have conducted this research with all the dance
07:40 - 07:44
teachers in the district to accommodate for not only more
07:44 - 07:47
students but for the different teaching styles of the students.
07:49 - 07:52
Secondly, like I mentioned before the amount of time for
07:52 - 07:56
the study in dance, it typically takes weeks, if not
07:56 - 08:00
months, to really improve on skill for mastery or substantial
08:01 - 08:09
growth. My implications for educational leadership began with developing a
08:09 - 08:15
checklist of the qualifications that allow special education students into
08:16 - 08:17
general ed classes for electives.
08:18 - 08:21
I know for us I don't know of a system
08:22 - 08:24
that's decided, but who gets to go?
08:24 - 08:29
I just know that there are over 10 Children in
08:29 - 08:32
our A C C program that do not currently attend
08:33 - 08:34
an elective class of their choice.
08:35 - 08:37
I think part of this is due to staffing, as
08:38 - 08:40
each of these students would need an aide to attend
08:40 - 08:43
the class with them because I have three in my
08:43 - 08:46
class in the same period, they're able to send one
08:46 - 08:49
aid with three kids, and it really works well.
08:50 - 08:52
Implications for future research.
08:52 - 08:55
I would like to see the study done with more
08:55 - 08:58
kids, of course, and I would like to broaden it
08:58 - 09:01
to include different genres of dance.
09:01 - 09:05
I would like to see how ballet would compare to
09:05 - 09:09
jazz to tap to creative dance and movement and see
09:09 - 09:13
if each genre of dance had a specific result for
09:14 - 09:14
the students.
09:15 - 09:20
Overall, I really hope that this research can show that
09:21 - 09:23
dance is a benefit for all but something that special
09:24 - 09:25
education students can really benefit from.
09:26 - 09:29
The most important change I saw over these kids was
09:30 - 09:33
talking to them about their confidence level, and I could
09:33 - 09:36
see and they could tell me that they felt proud
09:37 - 09:40
of their dancing and they loved to show their classmates
09:41 - 09:41
they're dancing.
09:42 - 09:45
And so, regardless of you know, if they really did
09:45 - 09:49
learn the skill, it's important that in that social setting
09:50 - 09:51
they felt accepted.
09:52 - 09:54
And I think that's something that all special education students
09:55 - 09:57
should be able to experience in schools.
