00:02 - 00:04
look into this training session by a street
00:04 - 00:07
connect on the subject of community recovery groups.
00:07 - 00:11
My name is Alex Nikola, Miss Service Development manager, that street connect,
00:11 - 00:13
and I'll be taking you through the subject today.
00:15 - 00:20
Recovery groups on group based support has been in existence for many years Now.
00:20 - 00:24
People find it useful for finding a safe place where they can share Colin issues,
00:25 - 00:29
explore recovery methods and share common experiences in other words,
00:29 - 00:32
encouraging one another in a group setting.
00:32 - 00:37
Hopefully, today you'll understand why ST Connect do this. How we do it
00:37 - 00:40
on ways that you can do a PSA part of our agency.
00:40 - 00:42
Hope you enjoy this session.
00:43 - 00:48
Firstly, I want to look at in today's presentation is focused on the four areas
00:49 - 00:51
personally, why we deliver groups.
00:52 - 00:53
Secondly,
00:53 - 00:55
what we delivering Group's third Way,
00:55 - 00:57
How we doing other groups and fourthly,
00:57 - 01:00
things we must be aware of when we don't have our groups.
01:01 - 01:03
These four heading should keep it simple,
01:03 - 01:06
and hopefully we'll be able to explore these in term.
01:07 - 01:10
So looking for flee at why we deliver groups.
01:11 - 01:14
The objectives are fourfold in delivering groups, firstly
01:15 - 01:17
with the other groups for meaningful
01:17 - 01:20
exploration of recovery issues and strategies.
01:20 - 01:21
As I said, some people
01:21 - 01:24
coming together get a chance to speak about
01:24 - 01:28
what has worked in the journey was not worked in there. Jeremy and General.
01:28 - 01:33
Generally, people just sharing with people help him t o helping them to understand
01:33 - 01:34
where they are.
01:35 - 01:40
The second objective of recovery groups is for people to take action
01:40 - 01:44
around developing knowledge and behaviours addressing individual physical for
01:44 - 01:47
psychological, social, spiritual needs.
01:47 - 01:53
Talking therapies are powerful, but if it's only talking is just talking shop.
01:53 - 01:58
We always have a call to action on in the world groups for without action.
01:58 - 02:02
Nothing really changes, so we encourage people through group to take action.
02:03 - 02:06
The fourth objective, all groups, is for people to adopt.
02:06 - 02:08
Positive attitude and skills
02:09 - 02:11
and basically change of behaviours
02:11 - 02:13
work steadily through
02:13 - 02:16
on sea change happening in their lives. And finally,
02:16 - 02:19
we want to offer they they got with the hope of the gospel on
02:20 - 02:20
prayer.
02:21 - 02:25
We are quite unique in terms of specialised addiction
02:25 - 02:27
services that's reconnecting that we look at a fourfold
02:28 - 02:29
nature of man
02:30 - 02:31
and will come into that shortly.
02:32 - 02:35
So these are the reasons why we do
02:35 - 02:36
the groups.
02:37 - 02:40
Let's looking at what we deliver now. Next in groups,
02:40 - 02:45
we deliver a range of therapeutic activities focused on
02:46 - 02:46
these
02:47 - 02:48
specific four areas.
02:49 - 02:54
Firstly, we look at the biological aspects and influences recovery
02:54 - 02:57
Well, that means as man is a physical creature.
02:58 - 03:00
Man needs to take care of his body.
03:00 - 03:04
It says The 1st 26 20 you were bought at a price.
03:04 - 03:06
Therefore, glorify God with your party.
03:07 - 03:10
Many people with addiction problems so on.
03:10 - 03:12
They haven't fully understood the damage,
03:12 - 03:15
the unseen damage that is being done to the bodies
03:15 - 03:19
so we can help people understand the consequences of substance years.
03:19 - 03:20
But not just that.
03:20 - 03:24
We encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyles, including nutrition,
03:24 - 03:28
fitness and other things like that, so that people can touch, start to see no,
03:28 - 03:30
only the feeling better.
03:30 - 03:31
They're looking better too.
03:32 - 03:35
So we emphasise this part of world groups
03:35 - 03:36
the biological
03:36 - 03:37
aspect
03:37 - 03:40
andan floors influences in recovery.
03:41 - 03:45
Secondly, we focus on the psychological as well as the biological.
03:45 - 03:46
This is a huge area
03:47 - 03:49
where by people fall very often
03:49 - 03:51
and that they haven't ruled in mind.
03:51 - 03:53
They haven't government or thoughts.
03:54 - 03:56
Many people we worked with have
03:56 - 03:59
significant issues from the past. Around drama.
04:00 - 04:02
There's childhood experiences,
04:02 - 04:05
difficult behaviours, difficult upbringings they've adopted.
04:05 - 04:07
A number of practises are suffering from shame,
04:08 - 04:11
guilt and all source of psychological conditions.
04:11 - 04:13
We help people to see
04:13 - 04:15
to Billy separate the person
04:15 - 04:17
from the ice so that they can understand
04:17 - 04:20
how to look at themselves better way better,
04:20 - 04:23
how to govern in mine and put any perspective,
04:23 - 04:25
things that have happened in their lives
04:25 - 04:28
on use, effective techniques to overcome these
04:29 - 04:32
so their manes air clear and they can concentrate on recovery.
04:33 - 04:36
So we deal with the biological, the psychological.
04:36 - 04:39
We also deal with social aspects of recovery, too.
04:39 - 04:43
Humans are social beings on. They have been from in for about equity,
04:44 - 04:48
even Genesis to 18. God declares, it's not good for man to be alone.
04:49 - 04:53
We find a lot of people get into addiction because of peer pressure,
04:53 - 04:56
social conformity, group belonging, and so on.
04:57 - 05:00
On. This can really down a path of destruction. But also
05:01 - 05:03
same principles can apply in recovery
05:03 - 05:07
in that below 90. A supportive, helpful positive group
05:08 - 05:11
helps one to actually persevere
05:11 - 05:12
and recovery
05:12 - 05:15
rather than being part of a negative destructive group.
05:15 - 05:20
We teach people how to overcome these relationships and indeed to cut off
05:21 - 05:24
unhelpful and dangerous relationships and start to find
05:24 - 05:25
new support of
05:25 - 05:27
on helpful societies round about them
05:28 - 05:32
and forth. Therapeutic aspect that we focus on that street connect
05:33 - 05:35
is the spiritual aspect of recovery
05:36 - 05:41
on. It's important for people to realise sometimes by the time people come to
05:41 - 05:45
ST connect or come to services in general, for that matter.
05:45 - 05:49
Generally speaking, they have lost hoping themselves to a large degree.
05:49 - 05:53
So it is important to let people know that there is hope outside of themselves.
05:54 - 05:55
When people are alone point,
05:55 - 05:59
it's important to be able to tell them there is hope in the world of college.
05:59 - 06:01
So as a Christian organisation,
06:01 - 06:02
we know there is power
06:02 - 06:05
in the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
06:05 - 06:08
And sharing this with people can sometimes be liberating for many.
06:08 - 06:11
So these are the four therapeutic aspect
06:11 - 06:15
about recovery Groups are delivered by street committee,
06:16 - 06:19
so such is what we deliver. Looking at the next subject to
06:20 - 06:24
for after what were you ever we look at how we deliver. Also,
06:24 - 06:29
the most fundamental important thing about how we deliver groups is preparation
06:29 - 06:32
Workers must be prepared
06:32 - 06:37
to bring effective on relevant support in people's lives.
06:37 - 06:41
The first aspect of preparation is facility set up
06:42 - 06:46
place in the place must be set up to be clean, well ventilated,
06:46 - 06:50
spacious, no trip Hauser's will. Sharks lying about
06:50 - 06:54
table and seating arrangements to be laid open and well.
06:54 - 07:00
We must ensure the duties are started at least 30 minutes before any group starts.
07:00 - 07:03
The workers have taken the time to go over and ensure
07:03 - 07:06
that food is Lee know if it's their snatcher later,
07:06 - 07:09
and that the war background is warm, comfortable
07:10 - 07:12
and ideally welcoming,
07:12 - 07:15
perhaps with some more worship music playing in the background.
07:15 - 07:18
Health people come on feel welcome.
07:19 - 07:20
Practical preparation.
07:20 - 07:24
The second aspect of preparations programme preparation.
07:25 - 07:28
The group content must be fully understood
07:28 - 07:29
on
07:29 - 07:33
as far as possible. Use variation. Audio, visual,
07:33 - 07:39
tactile, kinesthetic, other methods of communication for people.
07:39 - 07:43
Some people are very laudatory. Some people are very visual. Good groups
07:43 - 07:46
combine a combination of all these things.
07:46 - 07:49
Workers must rehearse the flow of the group. Also,
07:49 - 07:51
someone must take the lead
07:51 - 07:55
on. If there's another worker of two workers, they must agree their roles.
07:55 - 07:59
Secondary third workers are important to keep a group. Following is well,
08:00 - 08:02
if there's no much of a relatively new
08:02 - 08:04
group and know much information's coming back.
08:04 - 08:07
Other workers conjoined and give examples, and so on.
08:09 - 08:14
All materials obviously must be there, so the place must be properly set up.
08:14 - 08:17
All materials must be their workers have agreed. The roles
08:17 - 08:23
notebooks, pains, pencils and so on foot charge must be prepared and in place.
08:24 - 08:27
Also, the group rules should be there as well.
08:27 - 08:30
Any group for was it must come up with the group
08:30 - 08:32
norms that will come to that a little bit later.
08:32 - 08:36
But these should be probably displayed through for every group.
08:36 - 08:37
Also to remind people
08:37 - 08:40
of agree behaviours and so on.
08:41 - 08:45
Following on from that prayerful preparations of porter as well,
08:45 - 08:48
workers must take the time to meditate and pray together,
08:48 - 08:51
asking for God's blessing in favour
08:51 - 08:52
upon the group.
08:52 - 08:53
You know,
08:53 - 08:56
unless the Lord builds the house, the labour in vain.
08:56 - 08:58
That bill that's so is important if we're gonna
08:58 - 09:03
talk about spiritual matters as well as the bio psycho social matters
09:03 - 09:06
that we know that we got the mind of God in every circumstance
09:06 - 09:07
here is well,
09:07 - 09:11
preparation matters and must be prayerful preparation to
09:12 - 09:15
also, if we're going to prayer we must have the people prepared.
09:15 - 09:16
I mean, the workers prepare.
09:17 - 09:20
Workers must be competent in delivering
09:20 - 09:21
groups.
09:21 - 09:21
Now,
09:22 - 09:25
if you've no delivered a lot of groups before, that might seem a bit daunting.
09:26 - 09:28
But practise makes perfect.
09:29 - 09:30
Get a mirror
09:30 - 09:35
rehearse in front of the mirror, rehearse body language, rehearse gestures,
09:36 - 09:38
rehearsed intonation of voice.
09:39 - 09:42
Rehearse how you're going to bring people in different parts of the group
09:42 - 09:44
we hear practise.
09:44 - 09:46
Have it in your mind.
09:46 - 09:49
Preparation of the workers is vitally important
09:52 - 09:54
again. People preparation.
09:56 - 09:58
Make sure people get personal welcomes.
09:58 - 10:02
Make sure if anyone's coming for the first time, they get induction,
10:02 - 10:05
telling them where the toilet is, what the flow of the group will be.
10:06 - 10:08
Make sure there's a cheque in for the group.
10:08 - 10:10
Make sure people get a chance to be welcomed
10:10 - 10:12
and say something that started the group and,
10:12 - 10:13
if possible,
10:13 - 10:15
include ice breakers. Icebreakers are fun.
10:16 - 10:20
The the break down barriers in terms of communication encourage people
10:20 - 10:21
to enjoy
10:21 - 10:22
groups,
10:22 - 10:24
people, preparation matters
10:25 - 10:29
and finally, in terms of preparation, the personnel must be well prepared,
10:29 - 10:33
rehearsed, well prepared, ready to deliver the groups
10:33 - 10:34
to those
10:34 - 10:36
coming to seek support.
10:38 - 10:42
These are the five specific areas of how we must prepare to the liver
10:43 - 10:45
and finally, what else must be considered?
10:45 - 10:48
Well, group size must be considered first of all,
10:49 - 10:54
capital at 5 to 1 ratio is the maximum number you would have so few to workers.
10:54 - 10:56
The maximum group size would be 10.
10:56 - 10:59
With a mature, established group. You could extend that slightly,
11:00 - 11:00
but again,
11:01 - 11:03
be wise to the numbers coming
11:03 - 11:08
secondly as well. What we must things when, when with living groups remember,
11:09 - 11:13
we must have group rules of it timekeeping. What happens to late comers,
11:13 - 11:15
how the lake and someone be in the coming?
11:16 - 11:19
Also, we should have a group rose of it, sharing
11:20 - 11:22
what is appropriate to share what is no appropriate.
11:22 - 11:26
This year we should have a conversation
11:26 - 11:29
about the language. People use what is acceptable, what isn't
11:30 - 11:33
in terms of presentation. We don't do. We want people coming
11:33 - 11:36
under the influence. The answer to that should be No,
11:37 - 11:40
the group needs to buy, and the great group needs to own the group.
11:40 - 11:45
And they do that by creating group rules with support from the workers.
11:46 - 11:49
There are a number of issues here participations will want,
11:49 - 11:50
but people to participate
11:51 - 11:55
on standard addresses will want people just to dress clean
11:55 - 11:56
on appropriately.
11:57 - 11:58
So these things must be agree.
11:58 - 12:01
There were on a group and as I said, Pen Doc, every meeting
12:03 - 12:07
and finally what else must be considered as the group duration
12:07 - 12:09
action? Planning an evaluation,
12:09 - 12:13
typically one of our no more than two hours for group
12:14 - 12:18
sufficient comfort breaks must be planned and so on and so forth.
12:18 - 12:20
On the end, every group should finish
12:20 - 12:22
with action planning,
12:22 - 12:23
action
12:23 - 12:26
people rating and deciding what their actions are going to be
12:26 - 12:27
on conclude
12:27 - 12:29
with an evaluation
12:29 - 12:30
of how good the group was.
12:32 - 12:36
So it's important to do these things, remembering that we have with
12:36 - 12:40
people have a limited attention span, we cannot keep groups going too long.
12:40 - 12:42
If needs be a subject of important
12:42 - 12:44
can be spread over a couple of sessions.
12:45 - 12:47
All goals should always be smart.
12:47 - 12:50
Action should be specific, measurable, attainable,
12:51 - 12:52
relevant and time bound.
12:53 - 12:56
I think it is well vent evaluations
12:57 - 12:59
must be completed to help us to continually
13:00 - 13:02
developed the group content
13:06 - 13:09
and such a such of the core issues
13:09 - 13:12
that must be addressed when the living don't delivering
13:12 - 13:14
community recovery groups
13:15 - 13:19
as I said. My name is Alex Nickel on the service development manager at ST Connect.
13:20 - 13:25
I could be contacted at Alex nearly exact street, you know,
13:25 - 13:27
street connect dot co dot UK.
13:27 - 13:32
Please do remember, for we have a comprehensive range
13:32 - 13:34
at ST Connect of operations manuals.
13:34 - 13:37
The operations manuals for community recovery
13:37 - 13:40
groups gives the information I've given
13:40 - 13:41
plus a lot. Maura's well
13:42 - 13:44
on all workers should review it
13:44 - 13:47
on. Make sure they're comfortable with the content of that.
13:48 - 13:50
What? You have completed this group.
13:50 - 13:52
Please do contact street connect and letters.
13:52 - 13:56
No, you have completed it that we can forward on your completion certificate
13:56 - 13:59
