00:01 - 00:02
Hello everyone.
00:02 - 00:03
Uh This is Elena stole.
00:04 - 00:07
Um I read I've been reading the book start with
00:07 - 00:12
the heart um um by Michelle true jello.
00:13 - 00:17
Um and she was a an administrator um uh at
00:18 - 00:19
schools for a long time, and has written a book
00:20 - 00:21
on her experiences.
00:23 - 00:27
Um And just to explain the major concept that I
00:27 - 00:31
have been understanding from this book is that um education
00:32 - 00:35
has to start from a place of uh of vulnerability
00:36 - 00:40
and of treating students like human beings um of acknowledging
00:40 - 00:43
that they have hearts and personalities and that they are
00:43 - 00:44
holistic people.
00:44 - 00:46
And so that's why I have this picture of this
00:47 - 00:50
young woman um who's made up of different puzzle pieces.
00:50 - 00:55
Because um part of um uh Trudeau's point is that
00:56 - 01:01
humans and students are are complex beings and we need
01:01 - 01:04
to acknowledge the various um parts that make them up.
01:05 - 01:08
Um So I have five different takeaways um that I
01:08 - 01:09
would like to share with you.
01:09 - 01:13
The first take away um from the introduction and a
01:13 - 01:15
quote from the introduction is a way of being a
01:15 - 01:15
way of life.
01:16 - 01:21
So this model of teaching um teaching for social, emotional
01:21 - 01:22
and academic development.
01:23 - 01:27
Um it stems from a lifelong pursuit of of studying
01:28 - 01:28
this yourself.
01:29 - 01:34
And so it's acknowledging um the full humanity.
01:34 - 01:36
Our whole is what makes us up holistically.
01:37 - 01:41
Um so going back and let's take a look at
01:42 - 01:45
takeaway to uh so for the first chapter, it's about
01:45 - 01:45
the people.
01:46 - 01:49
Um teaching isn't just about getting a message across and
01:50 - 01:53
getting um the right uh test scores.
01:53 - 01:58
It's it's about the students, the human beings, and so
01:58 - 02:00
we need to meet students where they are, which might
02:00 - 02:04
mean they're in bad situations and they're doing poorly emotionally
02:04 - 02:09
and they have um like messy home situations, but acknowledging
02:10 - 02:13
um yeah the students are different and that your students
02:13 - 02:17
are different from you and that um your admin team
02:17 - 02:21
is different from you and um respecting the diversity, acknowledging
02:21 - 02:24
the differences and meeting students where they are treating them
02:24 - 02:25
as human beings.
02:26 - 02:27
That's what that chapter was about.
02:29 - 02:32
Um The third takeaway uh is built on this idea,
02:33 - 02:36
Built on a foundation of Love, and this is the
02:36 - 02:39
idea that um we want to engage students, fellow faculty
02:40 - 02:46
and ourselves out of love um which uh which means
02:46 - 02:51
um engaging with people through empathy, encouragement, having expectations for
02:51 - 02:56
them and um including a certain level of accountability which
02:57 - 02:58
looks like having boundaries.
02:59 - 03:02
Um and so academic and personal success.
03:03 - 03:07
Success can be can be met through placing love as
03:07 - 03:11
the Foundation and building basically building academic and personal achievements
03:13 - 03:14
off of this Foundation of Love.
03:14 - 03:17
And that's why there's this picture of a house on
03:17 - 03:22
a solid on a solid Foundation For the 4th take
03:22 - 03:26
away. Um the Villa talked about self awareness um and
03:26 - 03:30
it's this understanding of our internal goings ons um and
03:30 - 03:34
that through helping students gain self awareness by asking questions
03:35 - 03:38
by or by helping them ask questions um by helping
03:39 - 03:41
them find ways to express their feelings the emotions and
03:42 - 03:46
by practicing patients with them, they can learn to understand
03:47 - 03:49
what's going on with them and that helps them um
03:50 - 03:53
more healthily relate to their external world.
03:55 - 03:58
Um The last concept, also part of this idea of
03:58 - 04:02
treating our students as holistic feelings um is self management,
04:03 - 04:06
so the the chapter was titled Feeling It without Losing
04:06 - 04:09
It. Um and the point is that um as students
04:09 - 04:12
are growing and understanding of themselves, they also need to
04:12 - 04:16
learn how to manage what's going on inside them, and
04:17 - 04:20
teachers can help students attain this by helping them consider
04:21 - 04:21
their emotions.
04:21 - 04:23
So what is going on?
04:23 - 04:24
Why did you react like that?
04:24 - 04:25
Can you think about that?
04:25 - 04:30
Um And also personally not reacting to their outbursts and
04:30 - 04:32
taking that upon yourself?
04:33 - 04:36
Um but practicing and helping them practice the start stop
04:37 - 04:41
continue exercise, which is listing out um maybe practices that
04:41 - 04:44
we want to start and habits that we want to
04:44 - 04:47
stop, um but also things um in how we live
04:47 - 04:49
our lives and that we want to continue.
04:50 - 04:55
Um So those were the I've takeaways from the first
04:55 - 04:57
half of my book, start with the Heart.
04:58 - 04:58
Thank you
