00:01 - 00:03
Hi everyone, my name is Shane.
00:03 - 00:06
Any step and I'm a senior at Central High school in the country have chosen for
00:06 - 00:09
my capstone project this year here at Massanutten
00:09 - 00:12
Regional Governor School is the Dominican republic.
00:12 - 00:13
While there are many concerns,
00:13 - 00:18
the one I would like to focus on today is how the population is constantly growing,
00:18 - 00:22
which leads to a global challenge that many individuals and families face,
00:22 - 00:23
which is urbanization.
00:23 - 00:27
And specifically I will be talking about poverty and a lack of resources.
00:28 - 00:30
Research from the United States of America.
00:30 - 00:31
World food problem states,
00:31 - 00:36
poverty and inequality coupled with a lack of diverse diets in a week.
00:36 - 00:39
Agricultural structure are the root causes
00:39 - 00:42
of food insecurity and nutritional problems.
00:42 - 00:47
This affects 7% of Children under five years old. In the Dominican Republic,
00:48 - 00:50
malnutrition can lead overall health problems,
00:50 - 00:55
dental problems and falling asleep in class because you haven't had
00:55 - 00:59
the proper um food consumed and many other health problems.
01:01 - 01:03
As I have had the opportunity to travel
01:03 - 01:06
to the Dominican Republic for a missionary trip in
01:06 - 01:10
2019 I've seen firsthand the lack of necessary items
01:10 - 01:13
that someone else including myself may take for granted
01:14 - 01:17
the inadequate and poor amount of spending money that families
01:17 - 01:21
have led to limited to no food choices for meals,
01:21 - 01:24
less than par schooling and even worse living conditions.
01:25 - 01:28
As you can see in some of the pictures, the mattresses sitting outside,
01:28 - 01:31
so more than likely it can get rained on.
01:31 - 01:34
Um you know, they share these things
01:34 - 01:37
um in the schools, as you can see in these pictures,
01:37 - 01:41
the painting supplies and all of their school boxes are empty.
01:41 - 01:45
Um they don't have um very good schooling
01:45 - 01:47
and they don't have the materials they need,
01:47 - 01:51
like paper or pencils and things to learn.
01:51 - 01:55
Um at the top and the bottom. You can also see pictures of the food.
01:55 - 01:56
Um a lot of their produce,
01:56 - 02:01
like their chicken and their fish just set out on counters and people come and buy it.
02:01 - 02:04
So one that um is troublesome because of how
02:04 - 02:08
clean it is and then to its not being refrigerated
02:08 - 02:12
and then a lot of the fruit as you can see in the corner is also not clean.
02:12 - 02:15
So here's just a few more pictures of that
02:15 - 02:16
that you can look at.
02:17 - 02:18
So with this,
02:18 - 02:20
some of the solutions that I have researched
02:20 - 02:22
and thought of would be to begin creating more
02:22 - 02:25
nonprofits like the food for the poor one
02:25 - 02:27
that is helping people in the Dominican republic.
02:27 - 02:30
Their efforts provide fresh food and clean water to the
02:30 - 02:33
Dominican republic and it teaches families how to plant,
02:33 - 02:35
grow and harvest fruits and vegetables
02:35 - 02:37
With this, it led to education,
02:38 - 02:40
teaching young students more about the resources and
02:40 - 02:43
feasible ways to grow food could help this.
02:43 - 02:47
And lastly, religion is a huge thing in the Dominican republic.
02:47 - 02:51
So finding alternatives that would not overstep boundaries and religious
02:51 - 02:54
beliefs but could spread the word could also help.
02:54 - 02:56
And lastly, here are my references
