00:00 - 00:01
bed in there.
00:01 - 00:01
Right?
00:02 - 00:07
So my name is leah only more than this is my module 12 reflection I am in my
00:07 - 00:09
third term of the cal state teacher credential program
00:09 - 00:12
and this module 12 was on behalf of science.
00:12 - 00:17
So here we go. The thing that impacted me the most was
00:18 - 00:20
there was it was a good reminder for me now,
00:20 - 00:26
teaching 7th and 8th grade science in the school that I am teaching it right now.
00:26 - 00:30
And doing my third term of the credential program for um I
00:30 - 00:35
had a very good reminder of um bringing science to life.
00:35 - 00:39
It's a very interactive, very engaging subject, which is why I love teaching it.
00:40 - 00:44
But uh there was some real great reminders that you can still,
00:44 - 00:46
even though these kids are trying to
00:46 - 00:47
b
00:48 - 00:54
educationally designed to be more academic when it comes to science.
00:54 - 00:59
Um it never hurts to incorporate angelic lessons.
00:59 - 01:03
So taking the content of what they need to learn and
01:03 - 01:07
changing the context of it to where it's more hands on.
01:07 - 01:11
It's more kid friendly, even though these teenagers are
01:12 - 01:15
diving more into their books and thinking more critically and
01:15 - 01:18
there's more of an expectation about how
01:18 - 01:22
they relate their material and relay their um
01:22 - 01:25
what they're learning and it's not superficial,
01:25 - 01:29
but what I loved is that the last couple of lessons that I've done,
01:29 - 01:32
especially with the cell unit that I'm doing with my kids,
01:32 - 01:37
I did interactive labs with them where it's stuff that they remember
01:38 - 01:42
um they connected with stuff that they did when they were in fifth grade and I
01:42 - 01:44
thought that is just wonderful because it allows
01:44 - 01:48
this connection to remind themselves science is fun
01:48 - 01:50
and they're also learning at the same time.
01:50 - 01:55
Uh So one lesson that I did on behalf of the steam project with
01:55 - 01:59
the kids was I did green eggs in him and I had the kids
02:00 - 02:04
make a hypothesis that Sam I am knew about osmosis
02:04 - 02:08
and that's how he turned the eggs green and we related it
02:08 - 02:12
back to the cell membrane and its properties and how it behaves.
02:12 - 02:14
Um so that
02:15 - 02:19
to me that was just a really impactful moment for me being a teacher,
02:19 - 02:23
is that even though these kids are learning higher level science curriculum,
02:24 - 02:26
it's okay for them to act like a kid.
02:26 - 02:27
Once in a while
02:27 - 02:32
my skill set and my tool sets change where again I'm just gonna implement,
02:32 - 02:33
especially with
02:33 - 02:36
um the conceptualized sciences, I think I'm gonna
02:37 - 02:42
remember to um incorporate more engaging activities with the kids.
02:42 - 02:45
So in my Science eight class today for example,
02:45 - 02:52
uh the kids are learning about cinematics about how things move and friction and
02:52 - 02:57
potential energy versus kinetic energy and the way that I infiltrated that
02:57 - 03:02
is introducing them to roller coasters and showing them how much it takes
03:03 - 03:05
Fit on a physics level.
03:05 - 03:06
Scientific,
03:06 - 03:12
mathematically how much it takes to make their 32nd experience on a roller coaster,
03:12 - 03:15
amazing and exciting and exhilarating and it takes so much work.
03:16 - 03:18
So I'm having the kids design paper
03:18 - 03:21
roller coasters and they're gonna take marbles and
03:22 - 03:25
roll them down into their paper roller coasters
03:25 - 03:28
that they designed and they're gonna time and do
03:28 - 03:31
a distance to speed ratio as to their
03:31 - 03:35
overall speed and acceleration of their roller coasters.
03:35 - 03:37
So I'm making it feasible and relatable and I'm
03:37 - 03:41
just going to continue to add hands on kid friendly
03:42 - 03:48
context into the curriculum with the same content. So you need to learn this
03:48 - 03:51
in this type of unit, you need to learn this in this type of unit but
03:52 - 03:55
make it kid friendly approaches and I feel like
03:55 - 03:56
it's just going to resonate with them more,
03:56 - 03:58
especially kids in covid,
03:58 - 04:00
they have been doing stuff on computers for the past 18 months,
04:00 - 04:03
so I want them to get hands on again.
04:03 - 04:07
So I'm trying to have them avoid even though I want them to be digital citizens,
04:07 - 04:08
it's very crucial
04:09 - 04:10
I think that
04:11 - 04:13
they've been deprived of the hands on and the
04:13 - 04:17
communication and the socialization experiences in an academic setting.
04:17 - 04:22
So I'm incorporating that and then eventually when they start, you know,
04:23 - 04:27
wanting to dive into their digital technology again, I'm gonna Sprinkle that in.
04:27 - 04:29
But right now they're enjoying the aspect of
04:29 - 04:33
working with their classmates hands on with lab materials.
04:33 - 04:35
So I'm just going to keep doing that.
04:35 - 04:39
Other questions that I have is just um other ways
04:39 - 04:43
that I could integrate science into history and to arts.
04:43 - 04:48
Um I love the unit that I did with um
04:48 - 04:53
with the kids in science where I have them do a compare and
04:53 - 04:57
contrast of what society deems is what scientists look like from a very
04:58 - 04:59
stereotypical perspective.
05:00 - 05:02
And had them watch one of the videos from cal state teach,
05:03 - 05:06
showing them true honest to God. Scientists.
05:06 - 05:10
And just it could be it could be one of them, it can be their parents,
05:10 - 05:14
it could be it's me, we're all scientists in some way,
05:14 - 05:16
shape or form if you explore the world around you.
05:16 - 05:22
Um If you're curious, if you love messing around with things that's you
05:23 - 05:27
thinking like a scientist and I had them draw out what a scientist looks like.
05:27 - 05:30
Um The other thing that I did is I had them do a life
05:30 - 05:36
cycle of pumpkin where they colored life cycles of pumpkins in their faces.
05:36 - 05:39
Um So I just want to incorporate more of that
05:39 - 05:42
and how I can without making them fall asleep.
05:42 - 05:43
So
05:43 - 05:47
that is it for me and my reflection. Thank you so much.
05:47 - 05:48
Have a good one.
