00:01 - 00:05
Hi, my name is john this is my presentation for
00:05 - 00:08
Stanley, black and decker for the position of the slp
00:09 - 00:10
role in operations.
00:11 - 00:13
I was trying to come up with an idea to
00:14 - 00:19
present my story in an original way, both professionally and
00:19 - 00:26
personally and I thought that the slp role and myself,
00:27 - 00:28
we share something in common.
00:28 - 00:32
It requires many different things to be combined together to
00:32 - 00:35
bring out something good and I believe this is analogous
00:36 - 00:40
to a cocktail because perhaps the ingredients of a cocktail
00:41 - 00:44
might be seemingly irrelevant, but when you combine them together
00:45 - 00:48
and mix them up, you end up with cold refreshing
00:49 - 00:53
drink. And throughout this presentation, as you can see there's
00:54 - 00:57
a europe map in the background, we will be moving
00:57 - 01:00
back and forth between the pinpoint locations on the map.
01:01 - 01:05
Two collect the ingredients for our cocktail so we can
01:06 - 01:07
start with our first one.
01:08 - 01:13
It is uh huh and it's the town I was
01:13 - 01:17
born at and is the border of Turkey to Greece,
01:17 - 01:18
it's a really small town.
01:19 - 01:20
As you can see on the image.
01:20 - 01:23
The purple line is the border between Greece and Turkey.
01:24 - 01:28
And obviously this has an impact in the culture of
01:28 - 01:33
Ennis. It's quite international in a sense that it's a
01:33 - 01:34
balkan country.
01:34 - 01:39
I had the privilege to grow up participating in a
01:39 - 01:42
lot of school projects with balkan countries and getting to
01:42 - 01:47
meet friends from countries like Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia etcetera.
01:49 - 01:52
Then I started high school in Vienna is the city
01:53 - 01:54
and its belongs to.
01:55 - 01:58
And for me the highlight of the high school was
01:59 - 02:04
my participation in an Erasmus project exchange project with Germany.
02:04 - 02:07
We went to Germany with a bus and stayed there
02:08 - 02:08
for a week.
02:08 - 02:11
It was a really eye opening experience for me.
02:11 - 02:17
I got to really be involved with inter inter cultural
02:17 - 02:20
activities and making friends from all around the world, especially
02:21 - 02:25
Germany and it was really eye opening experience for me
02:25 - 02:28
and that I was a really social kid, I was
02:28 - 02:29
the captain of high school basketball team.
02:30 - 02:32
We had a really active music band.
02:32 - 02:35
I I took multiple roles in the band, I was
02:35 - 02:38
singing, playing drums, playing bass, whichever was needed.
02:41 - 02:44
Then I moved to Istanbul, one of the biggest cities
02:44 - 02:46
in the world, from a quite small town.
02:46 - 02:49
And here in the first years of the university, I
02:50 - 02:52
was more focused on social activities.
02:52 - 02:55
I was playing the faculty basketball team, I stepped off
02:55 - 02:57
the music game, I was playing regularly at a bar.
02:58 - 03:01
I I played into album recordings in one, I played
03:01 - 03:03
the drums in the other, I played the bass, but
03:03 - 03:05
then eventually I started to pay attention to my classes
03:06 - 03:11
as a metallurgical and materials engineering undergrad and started to
03:12 - 03:14
learn to think like an engineer to solve real world
03:15 - 03:20
problems. We already have our first ingredient, so let's move
03:21 - 03:22
to Czech Republic together.
03:23 - 03:23
Our second ingredient.
03:24 - 03:28
I did Erasmus exchange during my Bachelor's in Czech Republic,
03:28 - 03:32
the city of Australia here I spent two semesters and
03:32 - 03:36
I literally, I believe this was the turning point of
03:36 - 03:38
my life as I got to meet so many people
03:39 - 03:41
from all around the world and live with different people
03:42 - 03:46
from different cultures, work, work with people from back different
03:46 - 03:49
backgrounds, group projects, presentations, et cetera.
03:49 - 03:52
And even I received an unofficial invitation for a PhD
03:53 - 03:55
from one of my professors there, he asked if I
03:55 - 03:59
wanted to stay for an academic career and if I
03:59 - 04:03
will ever consider Technical University Australia there, which was quite
04:04 - 04:07
an honor because most of the time Erasmus is remembered
04:08 - 04:14
for uh extracurricular activities, so I was quite honored so
04:15 - 04:17
we can move on to our next ingredient.
04:18 - 04:22
We're back at Turkey, finishing the bachelors and in parallel
04:22 - 04:27
with the bachelor thesis, I did a long term long
04:27 - 04:30
term internship at Mercedes Benz and also in Volkswagen group
04:31 - 04:32
here. Coming back from Erasmus.
04:33 - 04:37
I really wanted to experience in different aspects of business
04:37 - 04:40
life and have a broader view of how things worked.
04:41 - 04:44
So in Marseillaise, I was in after sales unit in
04:45 - 04:48
in bus department, I got to manage a cross departmental
04:49 - 04:53
project where I get data from 63 dealerships nationwide and
04:54 - 04:57
I pinpointed the technical issues related to customer feedback with
04:57 - 05:00
the help of the engineering teams, to sales teams et
05:00 - 05:05
cetera. It was really um interdisciplinary in aspect and I
05:05 - 05:08
used this data to build reports and created dashboards.
05:08 - 05:11
I also did a similar thing in Volkswagen group.
05:12 - 05:15
I was basically monitoring our sales data for our spare
05:15 - 05:20
parts and uh reporting my findings to the management and
05:20 - 05:23
we were trying to come up with corrective actions for
05:24 - 05:27
the identified issues that perhaps prohibits sum of our parts
05:28 - 05:29
sales. Yes.
05:30 - 05:34
Starting out as a very social kid and ending up
05:35 - 05:37
graduating in the honours list, I have received my bachelor's
05:38 - 05:42
degree and we're moving to our next ingredient to Italy.
05:44 - 05:49
During my long term internships at Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen
05:49 - 05:52
Group, I realized how much it helps to have a
05:52 - 05:55
technical background to come up with some solutions to problems
05:55 - 06:00
encountered. So I decided to continue my education in a
06:00 - 06:01
technical department.
06:02 - 06:07
I studied materials engineering and nanotechnology in polytechnic University of
06:07 - 06:12
Milan. It's obviously a prestigious and globally recognized university.
06:13 - 06:16
I received a terry heavy and quite difficult education there
06:16 - 06:22
and I got to make uh more difficult projects with
06:22 - 06:23
people from all around the world.
06:23 - 06:26
Again, it has a really international student base and I
06:26 - 06:29
also received a perfect score on my master thesis defense.
06:29 - 06:32
But I will come back to that later because for
06:32 - 06:35
our next ingredient we are moving to Switzerland where I
06:35 - 06:38
have conduct my master thesis research.
06:39 - 06:46
The the experimental work here in uh Switzerland.
06:48 - 06:50
I was based in san gallon but I was going
06:50 - 06:54
to I was trying to Zurich twice, twice a week
06:54 - 06:57
to conduct different experiments here.
06:57 - 07:00
I pushed myself out of my comfort zone yet once
07:00 - 07:04
again by conducting a thesis work related to biology and
07:05 - 07:07
I have not seen biology classes since high school.
07:07 - 07:08
So it was quite a challenge.
07:08 - 07:13
And this institution Swiss Federal Laboratories of Materials Engineering was
07:14 - 07:18
a really top much institution under the domain of E.
07:18 - 07:19
K. Subic University.
07:19 - 07:22
So everybody was super smart, everybody was super hardworking.
07:23 - 07:25
You always have to bring the best is quite competitive.
07:26 - 07:28
So I had to work even more than everyone else
07:28 - 07:30
because I had to cover my ground in biology.
07:31 - 07:33
But it all worked out.
07:34 - 07:37
In the end we managed to carry a project that
07:37 - 07:40
from the backbone of a bigger project which we are
07:41 - 07:42
currently publishing a paper about.
07:43 - 07:45
I'm one of the top authors in that paper.
07:45 - 07:47
It's currently under editorial review.
07:47 - 07:49
Hopefully it will be out this year.
07:50 - 07:54
And so I presented my thesis work back in Italy
07:55 - 08:01
and graduated from polytechnic University of Milan with a perfect
08:01 - 08:06
score on my master thesis defense but gathering experience also
08:07 - 08:08
in research and development.
08:09 - 08:12
I came back to Turkey and the pandemic start.
08:12 - 08:19
Meanwhile I started collecting my final ingredient for my cocktail,
08:20 - 08:23
which was the Youthworks initiative.
08:24 - 08:27
Me and two other friends from my hometown Internet prepared
08:28 - 08:35
voluntary group and created a project that AIM to increase
08:36 - 08:39
awareness between employability rates and emotional intelligence.
08:39 - 08:44
We prepare an exchange project to train 28 youngsters from
08:44 - 08:47
seven different countries on soft skills to help them with
08:47 - 08:51
employment. And I designed a creative and interactive training activities
08:52 - 08:52
for this project.
08:53 - 08:56
And I also wrote the project application for a EU
08:57 - 09:00
grant. Then I started working as an engineer at Turkish
09:00 - 09:04
Airspace Engin Industries as a manufacturing special process engineer.
09:05 - 09:08
I am currently working directly on the shop floor to
09:08 - 09:09
operate the equipment operations.
09:10 - 09:15
I am also assisting in plant operations, troubleshooting or trying
09:15 - 09:18
to come up with corrective actions to problems encountered on
09:19 - 09:21
shop floor and making out of root cause analysis.
09:27 - 09:30
Well, starting at a small town in the border of
09:30 - 09:35
Greece to becoming a special process engineer that manufactured jet
09:36 - 09:40
engines. I enjoyed preparing this presentation a lot.
09:41 - 09:44
I hope you also like it and thank you for
09:44 - 09:45
your time and attention
