Hello today,
00:02 - 00:06
we're gonna be going over some ways to customize project based learning
00:06 - 00:09
implementation and these are tips that
00:09 - 00:11
are particularly helpful for secondary students,
00:11 - 00:16
but some of them can be applied for others.
00:17 - 00:20
So one of the ways that you can really customize,
00:20 - 00:25
probably project based learning implementation is by starting with a real
00:25 - 00:33
world problem that the learners are impacted by uh passionate about,
00:33 - 00:38
curious about and having it go from instead of there being
00:38 - 00:41
a project that the teacher has and is bringing to the learners
00:41 - 00:50
basically finding the projects that are uh coming from
00:50 - 00:54
the learners themselves based off of something that they
00:55 - 00:58
are passionate about or curious about.
00:58 - 01:03
The only thing with this is that one of the things that I've seen,
01:03 - 01:08
especially post covid is that there are a lot of learners who have social anxiety
01:08 - 01:11
now and sometimes having those like whole group
01:11 - 01:16
conversations uh can be a little tricky.
01:16 - 01:20
So if you have a situation like that,
01:20 - 01:24
making sure that there's opportunities like
01:24 - 01:29
a virtual conversation opportunity too.
01:29 - 01:33
So maybe some of the learners who are deliberate processors who need a little
01:33 - 01:37
bit more time to think about things or who have social anxiety now,
01:38 - 01:42
you can also like contribute and you can figure
01:42 - 01:47
out where their heart is on certain matters too.
01:48 - 01:48
So
01:49 - 01:54
making sure that there's opportunities to be inclusive of everyone.
01:54 - 02:02
Having a virtual form can be, can be really good at that too.
02:03 - 02:05
Another way that you can customize project
02:05 - 02:08
based learning to increase engagement is letting
02:08 - 02:13
them choose to work solo or in groups and this is something that can also
02:13 - 02:20
be connected with some of the um social anxiety that comes out and also like
02:20 - 02:26
general like awkwardness being a teenager and just kind of all of those things,
02:26 - 02:29
letting them know that they don't necessarily have to be in
02:29 - 02:31
a group if they don't want to be in a group.
02:31 - 02:40
Um but if you if you do allow for for for variation and choice with this,
02:40 - 02:44
making sure that everyone is clear,
02:44 - 02:45
if they're working in a group that
02:45 - 02:47
everyone is clear what their responsibilities and
02:47 - 02:49
their roles are having them sign those
02:49 - 02:52
contracts and letting letting that be explicit and
02:53 - 02:58
um agreed upon and known. Um but if they were choosing to work solo,
02:59 - 03:01
they are very familiar with the rubric and all of
03:01 - 03:05
the things that they're needing to do all of those
03:05 - 03:07
moving parts that they're going to be in charge of
03:07 - 03:11
making sure that's really clear and explicit is very helpful.
03:12 - 03:14
Another way that you can customize it
03:16 - 03:20
project based learning to make it more engaging,
03:20 - 03:28
impactful is letting them be in charge of how they present their final project,
03:28 - 03:32
the all of the important information that they have
03:32 - 03:36
learned um over the course of the project.
03:36 - 03:37
So
03:37 - 03:38
um
03:38 - 03:44
if there are learners who are dealing with a lot
03:44 - 03:47
of social anxiety or learners who don't want to be
03:47 - 03:52
necessarily like seen in the spotlight or that they have
03:52 - 03:57
an opportunity to um maybe create like a video that's annotated
03:58 - 04:00
um that kind of goes through all of the different
04:00 - 04:03
steps or the different things that has been learned,
04:03 - 04:09
so making sure that they have an option and
04:09 - 04:12
choice in how their final project is presented.
04:12 - 04:14
It can be very um
04:15 - 04:23
very relieving for some students and um engaging and um
04:23 - 04:25
kind of cool,
04:25 - 04:30
so something that can come up is that especially with secondary students is that
04:30 - 04:36
they've gone through the education system and so for a lot of students,
04:36 - 04:39
they might not necessarily
04:39 - 04:44
when, when being presented with project based learning,
04:44 - 04:50
they might not necessarily be super trusting or even necessarily have the skills to
04:51 - 04:56
uh get started because there's a lot of problem solving, a lot of creativity,
04:56 - 05:01
a lot of independent, you know, there's a lot of different things that are
05:02 - 05:03
required and expected
05:04 - 05:13
when when uh you're doing this approach, So really making sure that um if
05:13 - 05:18
you are going to be implementing project based learning that that relationship is
05:19 - 05:20
strong and it's
05:21 - 05:25
well, even if you're not please do this um anyways,
05:25 - 05:28
but making sure that that relationship is there and that it
05:28 - 05:32
is solid and that um the students can trust you,
05:32 - 05:38
there's not going to be like a gotcha or anything, they, they know that this is
05:38 - 05:46
um a safe space for exploring and learning and growing and making mistakes.
05:46 - 05:54
Um Also, another way to approach any kind of hesitancy or like
05:54 - 06:02
uh resistance um if there is any um is really also um
06:07 - 06:12
building up to the project like talking about it as
06:12 - 06:16
something that's coming up so that they are bracing themselves
06:16 - 06:18
and they're getting prepared and they're developing those skills that
06:18 - 06:22
they need to develop in order to accomplish it.
06:22 - 06:25
But also um
06:26 - 06:28
if you're, if you are
06:29 - 06:36
doing little little mini projects that kind of build up into a bigger
06:36 - 06:41
one that can kind of get them acclimated into this way of learning.
06:41 - 06:51
So and finally just a review over the different steps that we just talked about. Um
06:51 - 06:59
you can have them have choice for their project
06:59 - 07:04
by basing those in real world problems uh that they are
07:04 - 07:09
that they choose and then creating the project that way.
07:10 - 07:17
Uh that they have a choice of being able to work on their own or in group
07:17 - 07:23
groups. That can be very nice for increasing engagement.
07:23 - 07:27
That they have choice in the final project.
07:27 - 07:34
How that gets presented can be a way of increasing engagement.
07:34 - 07:39
And also just making sure that that that you have a really
07:39 - 07:44
good relationship with them if they haven't been exposed like in general.
07:44 - 07:48
But especially if they haven't been exposed to this kind of learning. So that way.
07:48 - 07:55
Um or at least building up like incrementally of um
07:56 - 08:01
what does having a little bit of agency in your
08:01 - 08:06
learning look like and working your way up to um
08:07 - 08:08
project based learning.
08:08 - 08:12
So that way it's not just a total shock to their system and they
08:13 - 08:16
shut down. So anyways, I hope this helps. Thank you,
08:16 - 08:17
mm hmm.
