00:01 - 00:03
Hello and welcome to America to two million.
00:04 - 00:07
Through today I will be presenting the finalization of multicultural
00:08 - 00:11
literature, eliminate from the short story and it's written by
00:12 - 00:15
North. So this for fulfilling um, task one.
00:16 - 00:19
So without wasting time, let us start with a brief
00:20 - 00:21
synopsis of the story.
00:22 - 00:26
So the story actually revolves around uh seven year old
00:26 - 00:31
boy indian boy who lives in a family of three
00:31 - 00:34
which consist of he himself a new his father or
00:35 - 00:37
also known as papa and his mom mama.
00:38 - 00:42
So this story starts uh in a particular innocent, in
00:42 - 00:46
a in a particular night when manny wants to go
00:46 - 00:49
to the toilet so he wants to go to the
00:49 - 00:52
toilet. So she was while he was contemplating whether to
00:53 - 00:55
wake his mom again or to go out by himself
00:56 - 00:56
to the toilet.
00:57 - 01:03
Uh he keeps on thinking of um thinking of the
01:04 - 01:06
hunted of the tree.
01:06 - 01:09
That is that is that he thinks is haunted.
01:10 - 01:12
That is believed to that is rumored to be haunted.
01:13 - 01:16
So he tries to peek outside to see what is
01:16 - 01:18
their side, whether it's safe or not.
01:19 - 01:24
But he saw um, two men which is marrying move
01:24 - 01:28
to and they had men, uh, the money moved to
01:28 - 01:32
holding a woman and unconscious woman on his back.
01:33 - 01:37
So, um, this makes, um, manual, uh, to be curious.
01:37 - 01:41
So next what uh, to be curious, but next, what
01:41 - 01:44
he saw next is something that traumatize him.
01:44 - 01:47
The most, he saw money moved to hanging the woman's
01:48 - 01:52
body on a tree until she is dead.
01:54 - 01:59
So, um, the next morning when he tries to go
01:59 - 02:01
out and see the tree again, he saw a crowd,
02:02 - 02:02
a big crowd.
02:02 - 02:05
And when he goes deeper in the cycle of crowd,
02:05 - 02:10
he sees, um, the dead body of a woman who
02:10 - 02:13
he is sure is the, is the woman that she
02:14 - 02:16
saw yesterday that she saw the snacks.
02:18 - 02:24
Um So and he also saw Marie musto crying, grieving
02:25 - 02:28
for the death of his wife, but as a witness
02:29 - 02:33
himself, uh and you'll know that he is faking to
02:33 - 02:38
grieve over the death of his um uh his wife.
02:39 - 02:43
So as the head man comes and tries to dismiss
02:43 - 02:48
the crowd, daniel with the with the bravery that he
02:48 - 02:55
has, he actually um tells the crowd that he saw
02:56 - 03:00
mary moo to the one killing his wife himself.
03:00 - 03:02
But little does he know that this is a big
03:03 - 03:06
mistake that he had done because um due to that
03:06 - 03:09
he is sent away from the village because the headman
03:10 - 03:16
wants no traces or no evidence or no witnesses of
03:16 - 03:23
him, um killing a woman and also witnesses that could
03:23 - 03:24
lead him getting arrested.
03:26 - 03:29
So that is the synopsis for this story.
03:29 - 03:39
Um Okay, let's move on to the elements of multicultural
03:40 - 03:41
literature that I have analyzed.
03:42 - 03:44
Uh so, first of all, let's go for a gender
03:44 - 03:48
issue. Gender issue can be defined as an issue that
03:48 - 03:53
can send determine um by gender based difference between a
03:53 - 03:54
woman and a man.
03:55 - 03:58
Um this could be uh this could be seen in
03:59 - 04:01
um one of the example that I would like to
04:02 - 04:05
say is the the domestic violence that occurred by two
04:06 - 04:08
women by women in two families.
04:09 - 04:12
So this could be seen when um in this could
04:12 - 04:18
be seen when the two men which is husband trying
04:19 - 04:20
to kill his own wife.
04:21 - 04:28
So this is actually a gender issue, and also and
04:29 - 04:35
that no one is brave enough to um to give
04:35 - 04:37
the justice that the woman deserved.
04:38 - 04:43
Um And next, it could also be seen uh at
04:43 - 04:48
the fact that um and his mother is the uh
04:49 - 04:54
is abused by his husband and can be seen with
04:54 - 04:58
the bruises on his shoulder, which is due to the
04:58 - 05:04
heating, but his by her husband himself just because he
05:04 - 05:07
was drunk and because he was abusive.
05:09 - 05:13
And another gender issue that I think I have to
05:13 - 05:15
point out is the inequality based on gender.
05:16 - 05:19
So this can be see uh in a different um
05:20 - 05:23
uh in a different way that they are treated because
05:24 - 05:26
as you can see all my sleep on a hard
05:27 - 05:30
cold matt uh well on the floor.
05:30 - 05:33
Well, opposites on the writing bad.
05:34 - 05:39
This is for me, it's considered unfair just because the
05:39 - 05:41
father is the head of the family does not mean
05:41 - 05:45
that they um there is the need for a special
05:45 - 05:48
treatment. So that is what gender issue.
05:48 - 05:49
Let's move on to.
05:50 - 05:53
The next element of multicultural literature is which is the
05:54 - 05:54
family relationship.
05:55 - 05:57
Family relationship can be defined as a situation where there
05:58 - 06:02
is a kind of troubled relationship between family members, which
06:02 - 06:03
can lead to tension.
06:04 - 06:07
And this tension could be seen between Daniel and his
06:07 - 06:10
father. Uh this can be seen because I knew described
06:10 - 06:12
his father as a bully, and why?
06:13 - 06:18
Because um this is because he um saw uh he
06:18 - 06:23
saw his father abusing his uh mother.
06:24 - 06:26
That is why I'm scared to ask his father to
06:27 - 06:28
accompany him through Thailand.
06:28 - 06:31
So instead he tries to uh wake her mother up
06:32 - 06:36
repeatedly. So, as a father, as a family, we shouldn't
06:37 - 06:39
feel unsafe around them, we shouldn't feel scared.
06:40 - 06:44
Uh instead, a father should make his son feel safe
06:44 - 06:45
and secured.
06:46 - 06:50
Okay, next to the next element is the belief system.
06:51 - 06:54
So, belief system can be defined as an ideology or
06:55 - 06:59
a set of principles that help a certain society to
06:59 - 07:01
interpret uh their everyday reality.
07:02 - 07:05
This can be seen from uh the form of religion,
07:06 - 07:10
from politics, affiliation, philosophy, and also in spirit us also
07:11 - 07:16
spiritually. But from this start story, it focuses on the
07:16 - 07:18
belief system of spiritual.
07:20 - 07:24
This is because in that society, the kids, they believe
07:24 - 07:28
that the kids and the Madman believe the madman garage
07:29 - 07:32
believe that um there is a tree, the big tree
07:33 - 07:36
which is haunted and eat kids who plays around it
07:37 - 07:41
and that once the kid um is it uh no
07:42 - 07:44
one would like hear anything from the kid again.
07:45 - 07:49
So it's like a something that they understand, something that
07:49 - 07:50
they believe.
07:50 - 07:52
So that is why it is considered as a belief
07:52 - 07:58
system, unless uh the second, this is the social issue
08:00 - 08:03
and which for me, I think is the main message
08:03 - 08:06
of the story uh in social issue, it is actually
08:07 - 08:09
a problem that affects not only a person as an
08:10 - 08:13
individual, but many people within a society.
08:13 - 08:19
Um, this can be seen um, in the abuse of
08:20 - 08:25
power by the headman, because the Hedman's uh basically uh
08:26 - 08:30
Hedman's attitude is because he is misusing his power in
08:30 - 08:33
order to save himself from the crime that he had
08:33 - 08:35
committed uh, from this story.
08:35 - 08:38
We know the fact that on the head man is
08:38 - 08:40
the one who killed um the woman, right?
08:41 - 08:43
But he tries to, he thinks that he is above
08:44 - 08:45
the law, the law.
08:45 - 08:49
So he uses his power, he uses his authority, he
08:49 - 08:54
uses his power too high, uh the crime that he
08:55 - 09:01
did. So he took advantage of uh onions father who
09:02 - 09:08
is not really smart and um, he ask his father,
09:09 - 09:12
he has on his father to send on your way
09:13 - 09:18
just because um, just because he does not want to
09:18 - 09:22
be arrested and just because Daniel could possibly lead him
09:23 - 09:26
to get arrested because Daniel is the witness and he
09:26 - 09:27
saw what happened.
09:28 - 09:32
So that is for the social issue and next blast
09:33 - 09:34
is the value system.
09:36 - 09:40
The value system, uh, is defined a standard pattern or
09:40 - 09:46
like uh, an acceptably expected behavior that is shared in
09:46 - 09:46
a society.
09:47 - 09:51
This could be seen when everyone agrees to the headman
09:51 - 09:54
suggestions to quickly burn the body even though they are
09:54 - 09:55
doubting the situation.
09:56 - 09:57
No one is brave enough to question.
09:58 - 10:02
They had meant anything because it has been established that
10:03 - 10:07
the villages, they actually know the fact there is like
10:07 - 10:12
a rumor that they believe, um, that the woman is
10:13 - 10:18
abused by not only his husband but also his whole
10:19 - 10:22
family hold nice white.
10:23 - 10:33
Mm So no one really tries to stand up for
10:33 - 10:35
the woman and tries to give the woman justice that
10:37 - 10:37
she deserved.
10:38 - 10:40
Okay, so that is for the belief system.
10:41 - 10:46
Oh, so from all of the elements of multicultural literature
10:46 - 10:48
that I have stated, the things that I have analyzed
10:49 - 10:50
throughout lee.
10:50 - 10:55
Um lastly I would agree to alexander statement which matters
10:56 - 11:00
who had stated are included in the cost of this
11:00 - 11:05
question. It's true that by reading literature, we as a
11:05 - 11:09
reader get to um, to learn about life lessons based
11:10 - 11:14
on the history that the characters has gone through.
11:15 - 11:17
So let me just go through one by one by
11:17 - 11:20
what I've learned from each of the elements for gender
11:20 - 11:22
issue. I've learned the fact that as a as a
11:22 - 11:25
woman, I would face injustice in the world.
11:25 - 11:28
So in order for me to like stand up for
11:28 - 11:33
myself, I will not let people to treat me mm
11:34 - 11:35
uh treat me.
11:38 - 11:44
I would not let a person treat me less as
11:44 - 11:44
a woman.
11:46 - 11:47
Um, so yeah, I don't know is what I have
11:47 - 11:49
learned from the gender uh issue.
11:50 - 11:52
Instead that I have to have the courage for my
11:52 - 11:52
own stuff.
11:53 - 11:54
I have to stand up for my own self.
11:55 - 11:58
Next is what the family relationship from the family relationship
11:58 - 12:01
I learned the fact that if I want to have
12:01 - 12:03
my own family or with the family that I have
12:03 - 12:08
right now, um, it's important to create like a loving
12:09 - 12:13
environment in the family because from the story, we know
12:13 - 12:16
that I'm really scared of his father and that's something
12:16 - 12:20
that should not happen in between family members.
12:20 - 12:21
So yeah.
12:21 - 12:25
Um, in order for me to have a loving family,
12:25 - 12:30
I would not, and as for the belief system, uh,
12:30 - 12:33
the base system is kind of complicated with what I
12:34 - 12:38
think is that belief system is something that a majority
12:39 - 12:42
of the society believe, like as like an ideal ideology.
12:44 - 12:46
So as the society, as a member of the society
12:47 - 12:51
society, I would respect what people think.
12:51 - 12:56
I would respect their ideology because like from the story,
12:57 - 12:58
um, kids will be kids.
12:59 - 13:04
So they think that the um the tree is haunted,
13:05 - 13:09
but as an adult, uh, it must be a funny
13:10 - 13:16
uh, uh, the system I respect everyone's point of view,
13:16 - 13:20
everyone's ideology, something that they believe, something like a policy
13:20 - 13:25
that they have because we might not know whether at
13:26 - 13:28
the end of the day that they could be right.
13:29 - 13:34
Right? So that is why the belief system um, next
13:34 - 13:37
is for the social issues uh, in the social issue.
13:38 - 13:43
Uh, obviously I learned that if I am a leader
13:44 - 13:47
in a group or if I have the power in
13:47 - 13:49
me, I would not misuse the power.
13:50 - 13:53
It's because I've learned it from the head man's attitude.
13:54 - 13:58
So as a leader in future or as a teacher
13:59 - 14:02
or as a pre service teacher right now, it is
14:02 - 14:05
important for me to know my boundaries and not misuse
14:06 - 14:09
my um power for my own benefit.
14:10 - 14:14
That could lead other people uh and last but not
14:14 - 14:16
least, is the value system.
14:16 - 14:20
The value system is that if anything, like injustice happens
14:21 - 14:25
to me or in a society, I would speak up.
14:25 - 14:27
I will speak up the truth about what is going
14:28 - 14:32
on, not like how the society um, in the story
14:32 - 14:33
annual, because they know.
