00:01 - 00:06
hey everyone so I'm going to focus on a common
00:06 - 00:07
core standard.
00:08 - 00:11
So I chose to do common core because my school
00:12 - 00:14
does not have a solid curriculum or a well known
00:15 - 00:16
curriculum that is used.
00:17 - 00:20
Um So I decided to choose a common core standard
00:21 - 00:23
because it's established and there are a lot more resources
00:23 - 00:28
available. So my students are pre Kindergarden, I teach english
00:29 - 00:32
as you know but I also like to incorporate math
00:33 - 00:33
into some of the lessons.
00:34 - 00:37
I think it's important for them to also learn how
00:37 - 00:40
to count in the language that they are learning.
00:40 - 00:42
So I like to do math.
00:47 - 00:49
So as you can see here is the standard I
00:49 - 00:54
chose, It says sort objects into categories, count the numbers
00:55 - 00:59
of objects in each category, limit category counts to be
00:59 - 01:00
less than or equal to 10.
01:01 - 01:06
Again prekindergarten is my grade level so we can break
01:06 - 01:08
down the standard a little bit more.
01:10 - 01:13
So as you know it this isn't something that my
01:13 - 01:16
students will be expected to learn in a week, it's
01:16 - 01:19
going to take multiple lessons in order for them to
01:19 - 01:20
master this altogether.
01:21 - 01:24
Um I may have some students that can't count to
01:25 - 01:25
even five.
01:26 - 01:29
So I will have to assess their skills and see
01:30 - 01:31
you know where they stand.
01:32 - 01:35
So first I would you know We would count to
01:35 - 01:37
two and then to five and then make our way
01:38 - 01:38
up to 10.
01:42 - 01:45
Also in the standard it would require students to have
01:45 - 01:50
some pre existing knowledge of colours or things like big
01:51 - 01:54
and small but again because my students are e.
01:54 - 01:59
L. L learners I would have to probably possibly re
01:59 - 02:02
teach a lot of these um skills to them such
02:02 - 02:03
as colors and size.
02:05 - 02:07
So I am getting a new class this year but
02:08 - 02:11
I've already gotten some information about the students some of
02:11 - 02:15
them do have english environments at home and the other
02:15 - 02:16
half do not.
02:16 - 02:19
So I would be their only source of english so
02:20 - 02:23
that you know plays a huge part in how I
02:23 - 02:23
would teach the lesson.
02:24 - 02:26
There would have to be a lot of fluency practice
02:27 - 02:31
and making and reinforcing vocabulary before I could even teach
02:31 - 02:32
them like the numbers.
02:34 - 02:36
Okay now we're going to see some of the activities
02:37 - 02:39
that I could possibly do for the standard.
02:41 - 02:46
So closer look sorting what does that mean?
02:46 - 02:48
We know what sort of means for my students.
02:49 - 02:53
It would be great for them because it also helps
02:53 - 02:55
to develop their fine motor skills.
02:56 - 03:00
Um from the information I've received about these students they
03:01 - 03:03
for the most part have pretty good fine motor skills.
03:03 - 03:07
They can pick up objects then you know color as
03:08 - 03:08
best as they can.
03:09 - 03:13
So that's an important part of their mastering this standard
03:13 - 03:19
overall. Again counting so some of the objects we would
03:19 - 03:24
possibly so it would be those with the same colors.
03:24 - 03:28
So they would have to put reds together or big
03:28 - 03:28
objects together.
03:29 - 03:30
That's just an example.
03:31 - 03:39
So activities matching I think that is possibly the most
03:39 - 03:40
important thing.
03:41 - 03:44
Students being able to determine what is the same.
03:45 - 03:50
So before we even talk about them doing things I'm
03:50 - 03:52
in matching things that are different, they have to master
03:53 - 03:57
um working on objects on on parent objects that are
03:57 - 03:57
the same.
03:58 - 04:01
What best to do that than with animals.
04:02 - 04:05
Kids love animals, especially animals that are smiling the cartoon
04:05 - 04:12
images. So first I would let them, so first I
04:12 - 04:16
would let them work on identifying animals that are the
04:16 - 04:20
same. So they would match the mommy cow with the
04:20 - 04:25
baby cow or the mommy cat with the baby cat.
04:28 - 04:30
And then another activity would be pairing.
04:31 - 04:35
So I put an image of bears here, they would
04:35 - 04:38
have to, this is just an example, put yellow bears
04:38 - 04:42
together, blue bears together, green and again it would require
04:43 - 04:44
them to have some knowledge of the numbers.
04:45 - 04:48
So we would, There would be possibly like two lessons
04:49 - 04:53
or more as needed on colors, on them knowing their
04:53 - 04:58
colors. And then another activity which is important is reviewing,
04:59 - 05:01
you know, I want to see if they are grasping
05:02 - 05:02
the information.
05:03 - 05:05
So there will be a lot of review lessons at
05:06 - 05:12
the end of each week formative assessment we have, I
05:13 - 05:16
would have students match match objects to pictures, so as
05:16 - 05:19
they're doing that individually, I can walk around and see
05:19 - 05:20
what they're doing.
05:21 - 05:22
Also have a worksheet, they can draw a line.
05:23 - 05:25
Again, I would have to see where the skills are
05:26 - 05:28
with holding the pencil, but for the most part like
05:28 - 05:30
I said a lot of the kids do have pretty
05:31 - 05:35
good fine motor skills online activities, it would be essentially
05:35 - 05:37
the same but I would just tweak it for the
05:37 - 05:40
internet. So as you can see here for using zoom,
05:41 - 05:44
I will share the screen, we would match animals together,
05:44 - 05:46
This is like a fun little matching game.
05:46 - 05:50
So we would do that as a class and here
05:51 - 05:56
for formative assessment to grasp its, students are understanding the
05:56 - 05:59
material to grasp, to, sorry to check if students are
05:59 - 06:03
understanding, I would um you know, let them interact with
06:04 - 06:04
their environment at home.
06:05 - 06:08
So this is a pretty cool image here the little
06:08 - 06:13
boy putting different um shapes with their names.
06:13 - 06:15
But I mean my students wouldn't do that, it would
06:15 - 06:21
be something more simple like colors together or big objects
06:21 - 06:26
and small objects and here we have a little game
06:27 - 06:32
so students can again match the pears, support for L.
06:33 - 06:39
L. Learners um definitely having for L.
06:39 - 06:45
L. Learners, so it's definitely reinforcing that foundational vocabulary size
06:45 - 06:46
color and the names.
06:46 - 06:51
So this would this is important for them because if
06:52 - 06:55
they don't understand the colours it decides it's going to
06:55 - 06:58
be hard for them to put objects into same categories
06:59 - 07:04
and counting as well, monitoring student progress exit tickets check
07:04 - 07:07
in. So when students are working individually, I can walk
07:07 - 07:08
around and see how they're doing.
07:09 - 07:12
And also a portfolio of student work which is something
07:12 - 07:15
I use a lot um which I have used a
07:15 - 07:18
lot during my time teaching this age group because I
07:18 - 07:20
can give them tests but I can definitely put all
07:21 - 07:23
their work together and see how they progress over time.
07:26 - 07:27
Steam just a little steam.
07:29 - 07:32
Um counting and sorting is an important skill that can
07:32 - 07:35
be used in different subjects and everyday life.
07:36 - 07:39
So Bell and I did a project for I think
07:39 - 07:41
it was for module three on a project based unit
07:42 - 07:46
about recycling and one of the cross curricular goals was
07:46 - 07:49
math and it's here, I can read it.
07:49 - 07:53
Students will be able to classify objects and count the
07:53 - 07:54
number of objects in each category.
07:55 - 07:57
So this is pretty similar to the standard.
07:58 - 08:01
I mean in order to master the standard they would
08:01 - 08:06
have to um you know use this skill counting and
08:07 - 08:10
sorting. It can also be used in science and reading
08:11 - 08:11
as well.
08:12 - 08:17
So counting is an important skill no matter the subject.
08:18 - 08:18
Thank you for watching
