00:01 - 00:06
Hi. We are continuing our quest to understand perfect and
00:06 - 00:07
recognize counter argument.
00:08 - 00:11
Um, So what we're gonna do today is we're gonna
00:11 - 00:13
look at counter argument in the real world.
00:13 - 00:16
So so far, our practice arguments have been sort of
00:16 - 00:20
theoretical, like tacos and social media, video game stuff like
00:20 - 00:22
that. So I wanted to look at some examples of
00:22 - 00:24
how people really use this.
00:25 - 00:27
Our first example is we're gonna look at how Martin
00:27 - 00:32
Luther King use counter argument to make his arguments more
00:32 - 00:36
persuasive. We're gonna look at the topic of violence and
00:36 - 00:38
video games and how people would construct a counter argument
00:39 - 00:39
about that.
00:40 - 00:41
Um and then we're gonna look at how we actually
00:42 - 00:44
use counter argument in hip hop with looking at the
00:44 - 00:44
film eight miles.
00:45 - 00:47
So these will be examples of things in the real
00:47 - 00:52
world. Um, obviously, we're gonna look closer at Dr King
00:52 - 00:55
because he was a master of the art of rhetoric
00:55 - 00:56
or a master rhetoric.
00:57 - 00:59
Um, one of the reasons why he's still so famous
01:00 - 01:03
and why he was so effective was that all of
01:03 - 01:05
the things that we've learned over the last couple months,
01:05 - 01:09
everything from poetic devices to logos, pathos, ethos counter arguments.
01:10 - 01:12
He used all of them incredibly well.
01:13 - 01:16
Um, it is obviously Black History Month on DSO.
01:16 - 01:18
It's just a great excuse to talk not only about
01:19 - 01:22
fabulous black Americans, but also how they have impacted in
01:22 - 01:24
American history using rhetoric.
01:24 - 01:26
So this is like a triple for one.
01:27 - 01:31
Um, before the first excuse me, the first example, we're
01:31 - 01:34
gonna look at three example of counter argument is in
01:34 - 01:37
Dr King's letter letter from a Birmingham jail.
01:38 - 01:40
Eso We're going to give a little bit of historical
01:41 - 01:42
context for that.
01:42 - 01:43
So you know why he was writing letters from jail
01:44 - 01:45
on dhe?
01:45 - 01:47
Why, he might have had cause to do those things.
01:51 - 01:54
Um, all right, so that is the basic background of
01:54 - 01:56
letter from a Birmingham jail.
01:56 - 01:58
Um, it's worth mentioning that this letter was a little
01:58 - 02:00
bit more controversial than, like, the classic.
02:00 - 02:03
I have a dream speech because he called people out.
02:03 - 02:05
He wasn't just saying, Hey, I have a dream, and
02:05 - 02:07
we should all be not racist together.
02:07 - 02:10
He was also like, I am disappointed in the moderate
02:11 - 02:11
white American.
02:12 - 02:14
He's like the Racists right there.
02:14 - 02:15
Terrible on.
02:15 - 02:16
They're trying to kill me.
02:16 - 02:17
but at least I know where they stand.
02:18 - 02:20
But the moderate person who stands by and does nothing
02:21 - 02:22
is far more disappointing.
02:23 - 02:25
The person who is a good person who is not
02:26 - 02:28
a racist, who knows what good things are but just
02:28 - 02:30
kind of stands by and lets those things happen anyway
02:31 - 02:31
because they wanna be nice.
02:32 - 02:35
Hey called those people out on DSO It made some
02:35 - 02:35
people uncomfortable.
02:36 - 02:40
Uh, but other people argue that making people uncomfortable was
02:40 - 02:41
why this letter was so effective.
02:42 - 02:44
So we're gonna look at kind of a big counter
02:44 - 02:47
argument video, and we'll sort of pull apart how he
02:47 - 02:51
used ethos to make his counter argument and his rebuttal
02:51 - 02:53
stronger and convince more people.
02:54 - 03:01
So here's some basics of counter argument, I think.
03:05 - 03:08
Okay, Um, so that's what I remember being ham jail.
03:09 - 03:13
Fabulous. Um, now we're going Thio, look at some more
03:13 - 03:14
basic counter argument.
03:14 - 03:16
So Dr King was like, you know, the master.
03:17 - 03:18
He's the master federation.
03:19 - 03:22
Video games, however, and whether they cause violence or not
03:22 - 03:24
is a topic that feels a little closer to home.
03:24 - 03:26
Eso We're gonna take a look at that now.
03:31 - 03:35
Um and finally, we're going to look at how Eminem,
03:35 - 03:38
the rapper Eminem, uses counter argument in this big rap
03:39 - 03:40
battle that he has with this other guy.
03:41 - 03:43
Eso. He's been sort of losing the rap battle game,
03:43 - 03:46
this entire movie, like he has good ideas but kind
03:46 - 03:48
of kind of a choke artist and doesn't really pull
03:48 - 03:50
through. But he sort of does in this final scene.
03:51 - 03:54
And he does that by using counter argument by taking
03:54 - 03:57
away whatever his opponent was going to say about him
03:57 - 03:58
and kind of using it for himself.
03:59 - 04:01
So it's a classic use of counter argument.
