  1. Hi, My name is Trish L.
  2. Chris Multi, and I am going to go through a
  3. Maria Servant Leadership Project presentation, which is to host a
  4. book drive for the Turner Sixth Grade Academy, the school
  5. that I will be teaching in in the phone.
  6. We'll start with the project background.
  7. When I first tour this excrete academy, I went through
  8. the library and saw that a lot of the shelves
  9. were pretty bare, and I think that that was very
  10. disappointing. Not only is fruit for teachers but for the
  11. students is well, too.
  12. Walk through the library and see that they're just really
  13. aren't a lot of books to choose from.
  14. And we want to create a literacy rich environment for
  15. our students.
  16. And that's really difficult to do when there aren't a
  17. lot of books for them to choose from to read
  18. while they're at school.
  19. So my first objective is to plan and implement the
  20. book drive to acquire books books for the school's library.
  21. And although they've been successful on this endeavor, once we
  22. have successfully brought in books to liner shelves list in
  23. the library, my second objective is to create a distribute
  24. information to share with the community about the need for
  25. books on not only Well, let's go to the community,
  26. but also to my students to take home one of
  27. the reasons that I really want to include the community.
  28. And this is because in the Turner community, a lot
  29. of people want to be involved in the student's education,
  30. whether they have students in the district or have their
  31. graduates or they're retired and they've had kids and grandkids
  32. go through the schools.
  33. I'm very blessed to work in a district where a
  34. lot of the community is involved, regardless of whether they
  35. have students that are currently in the schools or not.
  36. So I thought it would be a really good idea
  37. to include them in this as well.
  38. So next we're going to talk about the project planning.
  39. So the first thing that I'm gonna want to start
  40. with is talking about the people that are going to
  41. be involved in this project.
  42. So first I would include my principal and make sure
  43. that he's on board with me hosting a book drive.
  44. I would also want to talk with the library and
  45. to make sure that I'm not stepping on any toes.
  46. You to see if she has any input on how
  47. this could be a successful project.
  48. Next, I would go to a staff meeting and addressed
  49. my colleagues and discussed the idea of the book.
  50. Dr. And I would want to explain to them that
  51. this would become a type of deal where we break
  52. it up into groups or teams.
  53. If we want to call it, that s so we
  54. would have the English language arts team.
  55. We would have the math team, the science team, the
  56. social studies team in the specialist team.
  57. And the idea would be that each team works to
  58. collect books.
  59. So what I would do next is select kind of
  60. a team lead from each of those groups.
  61. And they would be in charge of making sure that
  62. their team was collecting books, that they were counting the
  63. books. Um, and they would be kind of that go
  64. to person for everyone else on their team.
  65. Ultimately, everybody would come to me if they have questions.
  66. But my hope is that with having a team need
  67. for each section, that would kind of help alleviate some
  68. of the responsibilities that I would have for having this.
  69. And it would also create more of a team work
  70. environment which would hopefully help build a stronger, too, and
  71. be amongst the colleagues.
  72. Uh, so what we would do next is I would
  73. want to have the team leads get together with me,
  74. and we would create posters that we would put up
  75. around school to kind of promote this.
  76. Um And that way we could get the students excited
  77. for this.
  78. So that brings me to our tiling.
  79. I would wanna have Ah, pretty strict timeline s so
  80. that we could make sure everybody is on the same
  81. page and that things are getting done in a timely
  82. manner so that we can have this piece successful.
  83. So a good example of that, for that would be
  84. I would want to create the flyers that are going
  85. to be distributed so I would create them on my
  86. own, but then share it with the team to be
  87. sent out to students to go home with her for
  88. their families.
  89. I would also want the team needs to help me
  90. in creating posters that we would put up around the
  91. school and those would need to be done about a
  92. week and 1/2 to 2 weeks before so that we
  93. could really promote this and get our students, like, really
  94. excited about this.
  95. Another saying that we would want to do is create
  96. a bulletin board where we can kind of track the
  97. five different teams.
  98. Remember, we would have L.
  99. A math, science, social studies and then specials teachers A
  100. swell. And it's so I would want to put up
  101. posters so that we could monitor our progress as we
  102. go. The idea is for this to start, um, October
  103. fit and run for three full weeks ending on October
  104. 23rd. At the end of each week, I would want
  105. each team lead to count how many books they have
  106. in their box that's gonna be outside their door so
  107. that we can see who has the most.
  108. And we would update the poster so that students could
  109. see that every day when they came into school.
  110. So for our budget and supplies, have this one's pretty
  111. easy. There's really no budget.
  112. Uh, there is no cost really involved with this.
  113. All I would need access to as a printer so
  114. that I could print the flyers and then distribute those
  115. with students and then cardboard boxes to collect.
  116. The books are janitorial.
  117. Staff can provide those.
  118. We have plenty of boxes at our school, so we
  119. would just that those outside the classrooms and that's how
  120. the teachers would collect their books.
  121. I think that this would be really doable for our
  122. staff just because there's really no cost involved and it
  123. really shouldn't take a lot of time because we would
  124. have everybody working together and does the staff worked together
  125. to make this happen?
  126. It would hopefully be a smooth run and we would
  127. get books.
  128. So next we're going to look at the project benefits,
  129. and this is kind of a unique one because I
  130. think that this actually benefits more than just the students.
  131. Obviously, the main goal is to benefit the students and
  132. give them the opportunity to read and have books in
  133. their hands that they are interested in so that we
  134. can create stronger readers.
  135. I also think that this would benefit our school is
  136. a hole and help build a stronger sense of community,
  137. and the reason I feel that way is because if
  138. we are working together to bring in books to our
  139. school, my hope is that it kind of builds that
  140. sense of belonging.
  141. We are working together as a team.
  142. We're trying to create a better place for our kids
  143. and in hopes that we can bring everybody together.
  144. So I think that this would have been more than
  145. just the students would also benefit the staff.
  146. As we work together, we get to know each other
  147. more. We get toe, have fun as we encourage our
  148. students to bring in books, we have that competition going.
  149. Kids love competition.
  150. They are working toward a reward of having extra P
  151. E time at the following week and they love to
  152. have fun in P E and play dodgeball and kickball.
  153. And working toward that goal is going to encourage them
  154. to want to bring in more books.
  155. So we're benefiting the students in the sense that we're
  156. hopefully bringing them together more.
  157. But we're also putting books in their hands so that
  158. they can read were benefiting the teachers because we are
  159. working together, which is showing the students that will working
  160. together, which is a win win for everybody.
  161. I also think that this will really benefit the community.
  162. I think that if the community were to see students
  163. coming together like this and working hard to bring in
  164. books for their school, that it would show the community
  165. that our students care about their education as well, and
  166. that our students have a need that they want met
  167. and they are working to make that happen.
  168. And I think that if the community sees the students
  169. working towards something like that, it will encourage them to
  170. want to participate more and making it happen.
  171. So lastly, we're gonna look at the project assessment and
  172. there's two things that I want to stop about here.
  173. The 1st 1 is what could go wrong.
  174. And the 2nd 1 is, how can I continue this
  175. project to have it go on into the future and
  176. also be the most beneficial for our students, community and
  177. stuff. So we'll start with the tramps and Trey against,
  178. and with this one, I want to evaluate the project,
  179. and this is planning.
  180. I'm planning on having this happened in October.
  181. Um, but I want to think about if I had
  182. already done this.
  183. What I think would go well and one of the
  184. things that I think would be a really great thing
  185. with this project is the sense of community that it
  186. would bring to our students and staff.
  187. Uh, I think that this would be a very rewarding
  188. project for our school to see that, Yes, We acknowledge
  189. that there there are lack of books and I am
  190. showing my students I care that they want these books
  191. and I'm working with them to help them solve this
  192. problem so that they can have those in the in
  193. this school.
  194. E think that also, um, some things that would go
  195. really well with this project would be getting the community
  196. involved and showing our stakeholders that here are the issues
  197. that we have and here's what we're doing to help
  198. make them go away and seeing how they can help
  199. contribute to that would be really neat for the community
  200. members as well as our students.
  201. And I think that if they see that the community
  202. is invested in their education, that that will help encourage
  203. them to want to do better.
  204. A swell some problems that I could see a rising
  205. with us.
  206. Um, there's a couple of them, and the biggest one,
  207. I think, would be students who can't bring in books.
  208. I know that there's gonna be kids who just can't
  209. afford to bring in books to donate for this.
  210. And I would want to find a way for them
  211. to be able to contribute in different ways, whether that
  212. be helping make posters or helping count the books, helping
  213. sort them by genre, helping the library and put them
  214. away or tagged them.
  215. There's various ways that we could have students being involved,
  216. so they feel like they're still a part of that
  217. community, even if they can't contribute with a tangible item.
  218. It's important to me that all students feel included in
  219. this, whether they are able to bring in a book
  220. or are just helping teachers.
  221. And I think that both options would be good for
  222. students to be able to feel like they're part of
  223. our community as well.
  224. And then to continue the project.
  225. Um, I think it's important to get student and put
  226. anti drip it to see how they felt the project
  227. went, what things they would change if we have the
  228. opportunity. What things they think what?
  229. Well, or what they would maybe improve upon.
  230. Uh, I also would like to talk with students and
  231. Aspen. What books are you interested in?
  232. Maybe giving them a scholastic catalogue and having them choose
  233. books. And then take those books and share that link
  234. with the community and getting it on social media so
  235. that other people can contribute as well on.
  236. And I think that if we were to get community
  237. feedback as well on how they feel, they could best
  238. serve our students that we could really find to miss
  239. to make this be even more successful in future help
  240. in future years.
  241. And that concludes my project.
  242. Thank you.
