  1. Hello there, my name is Chelsea, my singer and today I want to talk to you about
  2. teacher dispositions.
  3. These dispositions combined with many others comprise an effective educator
  4. who is able to lead students through the learning process as
  5. well as through the living process and helping them understand what
  6. it means to be human in such a complex world.
  7. Today I want to talk about a few that I feel
  8. I embody pretty well and then touch on one that gives me
  9. a bit of room for growth.
  10. Let's get started. The first one I want to talk about today,
  11. our high expectations.
  12. I make sure that I set both rigorous and realistic goals for my students.
  13. I meet them where they're at.
  14. I make sure I differentiate and individualize instruction
  15. so that students are able to succeed.
  16. I make sure that I helped them in setting goals and they
  17. help me in setting goals as well for their own learning.
  18. I simply love making sure that my students are not just doing the bare minimum,
  19. but instead they are reaching and extending themselves into growth academically.
  20. Next up we have respect for the diversity of others.
  21. I'm blessed to come from a very diverse
  22. background uh and cultural context and social context.
  23. And so I have the bandwidth uh and skills to be able
  24. to welcome in students to my classroom and love on them uniquely
  25. and individually and I make sure to honor their personal social context
  26. and make sure that they feel safe and loved and cared for,
  27. which in turn allows me to use that relational equity and moments that
  28. are a little bit difficult because they do come up as educators.
  29. They do come up also. I feel like christians are able to
  30. condemn others pretty easily unfortunately these days and instead I believe
  31. that respecting the diversity of others means loving them and embracing them
  32. very much like jesus is parable of the net where it
  33. lets in all kinds of fish Next step I have compassion,
  34. I feel like I embody that pretty well by warmly greeting and genuinely
  35. greeting my students as they come in not just in the morning but
  36. into school,
  37. but into my classroom specifically and I make
  38. sure that they are seen and that they are
  39. loved and make sure that they are known well and that might look like for one student,
  40. me following their favorite baseball team and then
  41. talking to them about it over the,
  42. about what happened over the weekend or asking my
  43. students about the most recent K pop concert that
  44. they went to or yesterday I had students go
  45. to comic Con locally and so I asked them about
  46. it this morning and they were so excited to tell me all the details and I was so excited
  47. to hear about it and when we have compassion
  48. and love and care and support for our students,
  49. they are able to thrive and learn how to trust adults in their lives
  50. super meaningful.
  51. Next up curiosity now I teach at a school
  52. where we use context based learning in order to,
  53. and student led inquiry in order to teach our content.
  54. And so I do this pretty well simply because of my own personal context.
  55. But I also do this well.
  56. Uh anyways,
  57. because I make sure that if students have questions they
  58. get answered or at least they get to explore.
  59. So I always have a space on the board for students to add questions as needed.
  60. Whether it is, if we're talking about caesar, augustus, how do we get caesar salad,
  61. uh, write it up on the board, look that up, find it out.
  62. Um, what
  63. do we still have leprosy today? Is it curable? Yes. Go look it up.
  64. I don't know,
  65. but go look it up and we instead are called learning facilitators at my school,
  66. meaning that we help students facilitate and reflect on their own learning.
  67. And it's such a gift, curiosity is,
  68. oh, the lifeblood of education.
  69. Next up is the one that I feel like I need to grow in now.
  70. I feel like I do most of this pretty well
  71. based on what was given to us in the assignment.
  72. But I do believe that advocacy, um,
  73. for students is necessary and meeting students where
  74. they're at and understanding both their issues that
  75. are important to them as well as social issues and I'm willing to do that.
  76. Well, I'm willing to speak up. I do that.
  77. But in my school,
  78. the primary student issue tends to be about dress code and
  79. we have uniforms and so most student issues stem from that
  80. and I do not feel comfortable all the time
  81. raising those concerns are advocating
  82. for
  83. a different dress code when it is something that the administration at
  84. my school has asked us to enforce as learning facilitators and so I
  85. make sure that there is fairness and that there is love and relational
  86. equity and context when it comes to correction for the dress code.
  87. But at this time,
  88. I I know that God wants me to maybe do more when it comes to looking
  89. at ways to enhance my advocacy for student needs on a larger school wide scale.
  90. Um,
  91. but for right now I feel like I could grow in that
  92. respect simply because I want to adhere to what's given to me
  93. all of these dispositions
  94. come together and help educators
  95. lead their learners with integrity
  96. with love and with respect for both the students and their family
  97. as well as their employer and when we do all these things,
  98. we are honoring the students, we are honoring ourselves as educators.
  99. We as long as we are reflective and we're growing in all of these dispositions,
  100. then we are becoming more and more effective.
  101. Thank you for sharing some time with me today
