00:01 - 00:03
Hello. My name is Joseph Walker, and my partner is
00:04 - 00:08
Josi right for the John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site
00:08 - 00:13
Project. And for this presentation, I'll be explaining a little
00:13 - 00:14
bit about John F.
00:14 - 00:19
Kennedy and his historical and economic importance and the National
00:20 - 00:23
Historic Site that was created for him to to honor
00:24 - 00:26
him and remember the things that he did.
00:27 - 00:30
And so first off will be looking at what the
00:30 - 00:31
PSY actually is.
00:32 - 00:36
And, um, what it looked like in John F.
00:36 - 00:38
Kennedy's time versus what it looks like now.
00:39 - 00:42
So this site is John F.
00:42 - 00:45
Kennedy's first home that you have done until you is
00:46 - 00:46
three years old.
00:47 - 00:52
It focuses a lot on his childhood and talking about
00:52 - 00:57
the things that, um that led Teoh his development into
00:57 - 00:59
the into the president that he became later on.
01:00 - 01:07
Uh, so first, uh, just Teoh explain a little bit
01:07 - 01:10
more about how the site came to be is it
01:10 - 01:11
was actually John F.
01:11 - 01:17
Kennedy's mother, Rose Kennedy, that, um, that bought that the
01:17 - 01:20
home and gave it to the National Park Service is
01:20 - 01:23
so that people could go there and remember John F.
01:24 - 01:29
Kennedy's life and ah, this map just shows a little
01:29 - 01:35
bit better A where the site is actually located, located
01:36 - 01:37
over here where the where the red dies.
01:39 - 01:48
And, uh, now, going back into, um, talking about what
01:48 - 01:50
it looked like back then versus what it looks like
01:50 - 01:54
now. And John F.
01:54 - 02:00
Kennedy. I grew up in a home just like any
02:00 - 02:00
other home.
02:01 - 02:09
It had furniture, uh, couches, bad tables, Uh, and you
02:10 - 02:12
find pretty much the exact same things that you would
02:12 - 02:14
find back then in his home today.
02:16 - 02:18
Uh, a few of the things are a place, though,
02:19 - 02:23
and they aren't the original items that they had in
02:23 - 02:23
the house.
02:24 - 02:25
But John F.
02:25 - 02:28
Kennedy's mother tried to do her best when she bought
02:28 - 02:33
the home once again to replace the furniture that they
02:33 - 02:34
had originally.
02:39 - 02:44
And it, structurally is about the same that it was
02:44 - 02:44
back then.
02:46 - 02:51
Now, to give a little historical context about John F.
02:51 - 02:53
Kennedy in what he did during his life.
02:54 - 02:55
First talk about his birth.
02:56 - 02:57
Uh, John F.
02:58 - 03:03
Kennedy. He was born in 1917 uh, drain World War
03:04 - 03:11
One, which ended in 1918 and, uh, after World War
03:11 - 03:15
War. There are a few important events that happened a
03:16 - 03:19
few changes in America, such as the prohibition of alcohol
03:19 - 03:24
in 1920 to 1933 and you were in suffrage in
03:24 - 03:29
1920 where women and gain the right to vote in
03:30 - 03:36
1929 the Great Depression hit and later on, ER, FDR
03:37 - 03:41
introduced the New Deal to America to bring America out
03:41 - 03:43
of the Great Depression.
03:46 - 03:48
Assume there after World War Two.
03:48 - 03:53
Hit in 1939 with America joining in the world in
03:54 - 03:58
the World War after the pro Harbor attack and John
03:58 - 04:04
F. Kennedy himself actually joined in the war on the
04:04 - 04:04
U. S.
04:05 - 04:11
Naval Reserve later on after the war, there are a
04:11 - 04:14
lot of things going on with civil rights movements such
04:15 - 04:20
as the Brown versus Board of Education that desegregated the
04:20 - 04:26
schools. Another important thing that happened to desegregate schools was
04:26 - 04:27
the little Rock nine.
04:29 - 04:29
Later on.
04:30 - 04:31
John F.
04:31 - 04:37
Kennedy was elected president in 1961 and was in office
04:37 - 04:41
until 1963 when he was assassinated, and when he took
04:42 - 04:44
office, America was in the middle of a Cold War
04:44 - 04:52
with Russia, and now to talk about the historical importance
04:53 - 04:55
why it's so important that John F.
04:55 - 04:58
Kennedy has his own national historic site.
04:59 - 05:06
Um, and he isn't a very important historical figure for
05:06 - 05:10
America, one of the, uh, most well known presidents and
05:11 - 05:12
one of the favorites of all Americans.
05:14 - 05:19
And this place was given to him as, ah, a
05:19 - 05:23
place where people could go to remember him and remember
05:23 - 05:26
the sacrifices he made for his country and the things
05:27 - 05:28
that he did for them.
05:29 - 05:33
And there are a lot of, uh, really significant things
05:33 - 05:37
that he he changed and accomplished during his life as
05:37 - 05:40
president, such as on creating the Peace Corp.
05:42 - 05:43
The Civil Rights Act.
05:44 - 05:49
The Tax Reduction Act is well, and a few other
05:49 - 05:54
things. He he did a great job in dealing with
05:55 - 05:58
the Cuban missile crisis and, as mentioned, the Cold War
05:59 - 05:59
as well.
06:00 - 06:04
Um, he was able to deal with that and minimalized
06:05 - 06:07
the conflict that it could have been.
06:09 - 06:13
So that is why he is deserving of a national
06:13 - 06:16
historic site because of the great things he did and
06:17 - 06:18
the change that he made on America.
06:20 - 06:25
And not only did he change some policies, but he
06:26 - 06:31
also made a great change in the economy and in
06:31 - 06:35
his personal life and in America as we're talking to
06:35 - 06:38
our park ranger, he mentioned that JFK and his personal
06:39 - 06:41
life didn't make a huge impact.
06:41 - 06:47
Economically, Uh, he he did write a few books and
06:48 - 06:53
waas in Congress, but other than that, he didn't really
06:53 - 06:57
have ah, real source of a great source of revenue.
06:58 - 07:03
But he made his significant impact during his presidency, especially
07:04 - 07:05
with the GDP growth.
07:06 - 07:11
As you can see on this first draft, JFK is
07:12 - 07:14
represented by this green line right here.
07:15 - 07:18
And the average GDP growth is represented by this line,
07:19 - 07:23
the average since 1953 as you can see JFK as
07:24 - 07:24
well above this line.
07:25 - 07:29
So he did a great job during his presidency to,
07:30 - 07:32
um, better the American economy.
07:33 - 07:35
Man was among one of the best presidents to ever
07:35 - 07:41
do it here stands third on this list of average
07:41 - 07:49
annual GDP growth in America over his presidency, and those
07:49 - 07:50
are a few things.
07:51 - 07:51
Oh, there's one more.
07:51 - 07:52
I forgot Teoh.
07:53 - 07:57
I forgot to mention was the revenue act that he
07:58 - 08:03
proposed. It's cut the federal income tax by 20% and
08:05 - 08:11
led to the unemployment rates to drop more, um, than
08:11 - 08:14
they had before, So that was something you really good
08:14 - 08:15
that he did.
08:15 - 08:18
And it was something that a lot of Americans loved.
08:19 - 08:23
So now, after talking about all of those historical and
08:23 - 08:28
economic impacts that he made on America and on many
08:28 - 08:33
wives, um, why is it important that we that we
08:33 - 08:36
still understand these things that we learned about this and
08:36 - 08:41
that we have the National Historic Site and, uh, Jack
08:42 - 08:46
A, uh, this home is really important so that we
08:47 - 08:52
can truly come to understand what made JFK, um, the
08:52 - 08:54
kind of person that he was and the kind of
08:54 - 08:56
leader he waas in this site.
08:56 - 09:01
We learn about his childhood and how his family raised
09:01 - 09:06
him and how he was able to get his humor,
09:07 - 09:11
his wet, his leadership skills and how he was able
09:11 - 09:14
to I develop a sense of hard work.
09:15 - 09:18
Uh, and we're not gonna show the video it It
09:18 - 09:19
hasn't been working.
09:19 - 09:22
We've been trying a few times, so let's get that
09:22 - 09:23
for now.
09:24 - 09:27
Um, but just to talk a little bit about the
09:28 - 09:31
importance of his family as well the importance of us
09:31 - 09:37
knowing about this is er family was a really important
09:37 - 09:38
thing to him.
09:39 - 09:42
His parents taught him well to be close to his
09:42 - 09:43
brothers sisters.
09:43 - 09:45
And he had a great relationship with his older brother
09:46 - 09:48
that taught him a lot of things and that was
09:49 - 09:51
able to to shape him for the rest of his
09:51 - 09:53
life and the kind of president he was able to
09:53 - 09:59
be. So, by knowing these things, we can understand, uh,
10:00 - 10:07
the history of America, the impact that John F.
10:07 - 10:13
Kennedy had, and we can't understand how we can also
10:14 - 10:16
implement some of these things in our own lives to
10:16 - 10:18
become as great leaders, is he?
10:18 - 10:19
He was.
10:20 - 10:25
And just to end your a few of the sources
10:25 - 10:30
that we used the primary sources, the NPS sources and
10:31 - 10:35
also the other sources that were used during this project.
10:36 - 10:38
So thank you for watching this video.
10:38 - 10:40
I hope that you learned a little bit more about
10:40 - 10:40
John F.
10:40 - 10:45
Kennedy in his importance to America, and that one day
10:45 - 10:46
you'll go visit the John F.
10:46 - 10:48
Kennedy National Historic Site.
