00:07 - 00:09
Hi, My name is you, Patel, from Mississippi State University
00:10 - 00:11
College, Off Architectural.
00:11 - 00:14
And today we would be discussing the Project architecture for
00:15 - 00:15
climate Change.
00:16 - 00:19
The particular site is located in Greenville, Mississippi.
00:20 - 00:23
So just to give you a small context on the
00:23 - 00:27
city and the site, Greenville is a city located on
00:27 - 00:31
the western part off Ms Mississippi, with a population of
00:31 - 00:32
34,000 people.
00:33 - 00:36
While the site is located on the northern part off
00:37 - 00:40
Greenville, around one mile away from like Ferguson, which is
00:41 - 00:45
a part off Mississippi River and is located on the
00:45 - 00:49
western side off the site so more on the side.
00:49 - 00:53
The side is populated with residential buildings on the southern
00:53 - 00:59
part of the site, while all the other sides are
00:59 - 01:00
filled with commercial buildings.
01:01 - 01:03
As you can see on the top image, the purple
01:03 - 01:07
buildings are the commercial, while the pink boxes are the
01:08 - 01:12
residential blocks moving on.
01:13 - 01:16
We started with the conceptual exercise initially where my main
01:16 - 01:22
focus, WAAS progression and natural light through elements, and I
01:22 - 01:26
achieved this by playing with certain kind off lowers, which
01:26 - 01:30
can potentially bring in natural light as well, less natural
01:30 - 01:34
regulation. With the combination off certain elements.
01:36 - 01:39
And I also started to sketch out my ideas on
01:39 - 01:42
the progression on how one would feel in the space
01:43 - 01:46
in the natural light throughout the building, which would help
01:47 - 01:50
me, um, further in the whole project.
01:52 - 01:56
So moving on, um, I started to translate my concept
01:57 - 02:01
in tow an actual building, and I decided toe place
02:02 - 02:06
my community center on the southern side off the site
02:07 - 02:09
in in order to connect more to the main road
02:10 - 02:12
and the residential block across the street.
02:13 - 02:17
While another reason for that was to create an opportunity
02:18 - 02:23
within the site within the site where an outer space
02:24 - 02:26
is connected to the main street as well as the
02:26 - 02:28
residential block across the street.
02:31 - 02:34
Talking more about the layout off spaces, I went back
02:34 - 02:37
to my concept off having spaces branched out from the
02:37 - 02:43
central circulation and as part off my concept, um, my
02:43 - 02:47
major focus was around, um, progression and and natural ventilation.
02:48 - 02:52
So I decided to move forward with this aluminum lowered
02:52 - 02:57
system, lured great system um, which which has a sharing
02:57 - 03:01
material on top off it, but which will also bring
03:01 - 03:05
natural light into the space and what this also does
03:05 - 03:08
is try to help one progress through the building with
03:09 - 03:09
help off natural light.
03:10 - 03:13
Um, this also created an opportunity for me to create,
03:13 - 03:17
to connect indoors to outdoors with the same design strategy
03:18 - 03:21
in which the lower system will continue to extend outdoors,
03:22 - 03:26
creating a good transition from indoors to outdoors, and you
03:26 - 03:28
seem or, um, in walk through.
03:29 - 03:33
And the renderings is this building was also going to
03:33 - 03:37
be an educational space to learn more about the site
03:37 - 03:37
and the city.
03:38 - 03:41
I wanted my classrooms and the recreational space directly connected
03:41 - 03:44
to the, uh to the outdoors, as you can see
03:44 - 03:46
on the screen right now.
03:46 - 03:52
And it kind off connects the whole space together, moving
03:53 - 03:54
on with the elevations.
03:55 - 03:59
So particularly on the South and West direction, where most
03:59 - 04:02
off the sun and he hit, um, comes to the
04:02 - 04:07
space. Um, my idea off the shading device was the
04:07 - 04:08
same as the indoors.
04:08 - 04:09
Well, why?
04:09 - 04:13
Where I have extended out the same lower grade system
04:14 - 04:17
with the shooting model on top of it toe provide
04:18 - 04:21
enough sharing to the spaces on the southern and western
04:21 - 04:25
side, and due to the help off lower system in
04:25 - 04:28
the trees placed on the southern and western facade.
04:28 - 04:32
Um, ample amount off natural light throughout the day, um
04:33 - 04:37
comes in to the spaces with reduced amount off.
04:37 - 04:43
He and these are my east and west elevations off
04:43 - 04:47
the community center talking about my sections.
04:48 - 04:51
The building has been raised up from the ground level
04:52 - 04:55
in order to prevent floodwater entering into the building.
04:56 - 04:59
And with the help off, um, lower great system, it
04:59 - 05:02
brings in a ZX you can see in the northern
05:03 - 05:07
section in the eastern west section with the help of
05:07 - 05:07
floor Great system.
05:08 - 05:10
It brings in the natural light throughout the day with
05:11 - 05:15
radios hit off the radius hit with help off shading
05:15 - 05:18
device on top off it, um, with the reduced amount
05:19 - 05:26
off. So moving on with my wall section Um, here,
05:26 - 05:29
you can see the connection detail off the lower system
05:30 - 05:32
which has been shown where it has been anchored to
05:33 - 05:37
the wall, while, um, an additional attention cable is attached
05:38 - 05:43
to the parapet off the wall, which creates stability in
05:44 - 05:48
which creates stability in orderto avoid the uplifting or damaging
05:48 - 05:49
off the system.
05:52 - 05:56
Talking about my bio climatic design strategies firstly toe address
05:56 - 05:58
the issue of floodwater.
05:59 - 06:03
I have utilized the existing Swail, which is located on
06:03 - 06:05
the eastern side, off the side on.
06:05 - 06:09
If you're able to see but and look on the
06:09 - 06:13
inside of those site by connecting a bias will that
06:13 - 06:16
that runs from west to east, guiding the flow of
06:17 - 06:19
water and what this also does is tries to slow
06:20 - 06:24
down the flow of water and connected to the existing
06:24 - 06:29
swell. The topography around the building has also been created
06:29 - 06:31
in such a way that the water will be directed,
06:32 - 06:36
um, toe the bio swales and the existing soil, so
06:37 - 06:38
to run off the floodwater.
06:39 - 06:45
In such circumstances, moving on the building will be also
06:45 - 06:49
producing like electricity, with help off solar panels that are
06:49 - 06:55
placed above the community center, which will be adequate to
06:56 - 06:57
supply both like community and housing.
06:59 - 07:00
In such tough times.
07:03 - 07:06
Talking off my housing, I have provided 20 total units
07:06 - 07:13
for the housing where four units will be, uh, four
07:13 - 07:16
units are specially designed for area accessibility, while the all
07:17 - 07:22
all the other units are normally accessible.
07:25 - 07:28
Also, the layout does goto my concept in a way
07:28 - 07:31
where you can see like it branches out from each
07:31 - 07:35
other. And it has Bean designed in such a way
07:36 - 07:40
that it directly connects to the recreational space but also
07:41 - 07:46
have their own recreational space, um, outdoor space, where the
07:46 - 07:50
effort was made to create a community space which connects
07:50 - 07:52
toe each and every person staying there.
