  1. Hello, This is what a Lupe Perez and this is
  2. my literary biography as a child that was born in
  3. here in the over you.
  4. But I, my first language was spanish because my parents
  5. lived in a kenya, my first book that I read
  6. was a spanish book.
  7. Uh that's what it, what it was called, espanol and
  8. it was a collection of short stories for first graders
  9. and these short stories would speak about the yeah, the
  10. things that uh a small a person is starting their
  11. life need to learn like cultural values and and accepted
  12. behaviours because I, some of those stories are about washing
  13. your hands about asking for help for policemen, about sharing
  14. being a good, a good person in some of them
  15. were with rhyming.
  16. Yeah, but it didnt emphasized certain values and made it
  17. fun at the same time as the singing or as
  18. a rhyming.
  19. Yeah. When I was going to go third grade, my
  20. parents sent me to live with my uncle and my,
  21. my aunt at first my goal was to just read
  22. to learn, I needed to treat, translate every word.
  23. So it was reading wasn't really fun for me at
  24. first because I, I needed to learn what the word
  25. meant. It was, it was a slow process at first
  26. and when I started with my vocabulary grew uh as
  27. I spoke more english and understood it better.
  28. I remember Junie b jones being one, one of the
  29. books that I really enjoy and I would grab every,
  30. every book in the series and enjoy and laugh with
  31. it. Okay.
  32. Yeah. Between those years and when I went to high
  33. school and started reading and there was a big gap
  34. in which I don't remember quite much of the works
  35. that that impacted me as in literacy.
  36. But I do remember uh Edgar Allan Poe I I
  37. was going through a stage in my life that I
  38. I I I related or felt like an email.
  39. So like reading a daughter erin limpopo was like you
  40. know, um I connected with him like knowing that there
  41. are other people that felt dark and twist inside and
  42. it was okay and they were great, he was great
  43. as a writer.
  44. So I really enjoyed um one of my favorites was
  45. raven, the one that is a poem and the tell
  46. tale Heart when I was in college.
  47. Well in Seoul ross with dr roach.
  48. These books are books that I should have read as
  49. a child or as 5th grade through 9th grade at
  50. least. But honestly I didn't read these books as like
  51. in those years and these are books that are that
  52. I loved them, I love them so much and I
  53. cried with charlotte's web and I shared quotes on my
  54. facebook about it and I loved it.
  55. 1 1, normally Ivan was another one that really like
  56. touched me and the giver and these were books that
  57. I I this was stage in my life that I
  58. liked sharing with other people.
  59. I remember calling my boyfriend telling my sister and my
  60. niece my mother about the books that I was reading
  61. and you know what like those connections that I was
  62. making and what I liked, what I didn't like.
  63. Like the giver a lot of things that they talked
  64. about. I was like why?
  65. Like at first it looks like it's a good like
  66. a good scenario what they did.
  67. If you haven't read it, read it, it's really good
  68. to give her.
  69. But as you read on you see all the things
  70. that you know, they don't balance out.
  71. You know, it's bad the way that they're living their
  72. lives. It's not good.
  73. Yeah. And finally the bible that you know, that's a
  74. literally work that when I lived with my aunt, that's
  75. when I first started hearing the bible stories and those
  76. shaped me because I grew with them and because after
  77. they were emphasized to me as a shelf by my
  78. aunt, I learned to keep up with it.
  79. It was part of my life throughout those years.
  80. On and off right now.
  81. And when I was older I actually yeah, had my
  82. my classes for sunday school and I would get like
  83. I would do an activity to a lesson plan based
  84. on a bible story.
  85. And I think this part of where I I am
  86. new or acknowledged that you know, I was good at,
  87. you know creating activities and the Children's enjoyed it and
  88. it come into wanting to be an educator and learning
  89. more skills and getting into the education world.
  90. Yeah. Yeah.
  91. S and that literally works.
  92. I think they shaped me as an educator in knowing
  93. that there there are so many styles, there's some in
  94. there's different stages like me in life that there there's
  95. so many options for to look for in which students
  96. can connect and students can relate and learn from and
  97. just feel the literature and grow us as people and
  98. as an academically.
  99. And I I think that's that's something that is gonna
  100. and that's going to carry on through my my teaching
  101. years that, you know, there's there's we're going to have
  102. people that are culturally diverse and we need we need
  103. to look for ways that they're going to get involved
  104. and motivated and continue to grab a book and enjoy
  105. it and learn from it and connect with it.
  106. And it's it's just fascinating.
  107. Thank you so much.
