00:00 - 00:00

00:07 - 00:09

00:19 - 00:19
our community.
00:20 - 00:22
Um, and the first session.
00:23 - 00:26
We want to entitle people in a community work together.
00:26 - 00:29
So we're going to learn about what a community is.
00:30 - 00:34
Um, and what a job is and different kinds of
00:34 - 00:36
jobs. Okay.
00:37 - 00:37
All right.
00:38 - 00:40
Things you might need to.
00:41 - 00:43
Today's session is the junior achievement.
00:44 - 00:44
Our community poster.
00:45 - 00:46
Hopefully, your teachers cut it, hung up.
00:46 - 00:48
Um, and job cards.
00:48 - 00:50
Everybody's gonna get a job card, one job card.
00:51 - 00:54
And and then there's these postcards with magnets you can
00:55 - 00:56
have and take home at the end.
00:56 - 00:58
Okay, so let's get started.
00:58 - 01:00
Um, what is a community?
01:01 - 01:03
A community is a place where people live, work, play
01:04 - 01:04
and go to school.
01:05 - 01:07
Right? So we all live in a community, right?
01:08 - 01:09
In our community is West Columbia.
01:10 - 01:11
That's where we live.
01:11 - 01:13
That's where we people work.
01:14 - 01:16
Maybe in right now, you're going to school there, and
01:16 - 01:18
maybe you play soccer there, So yeah.
01:19 - 01:24
Uh, This is our community, and we live and do
01:24 - 01:25
all those living activities in him.
01:26 - 01:28
Okay. All right.
01:28 - 01:30
Let's talk about people in the community because we need
01:30 - 01:31
people to make up our community.
01:32 - 01:33
How do they help each other?
01:34 - 01:37
Um, maybe they volunteer.
01:38 - 01:42
Maybe they run a business that provides jobs.
01:43 - 01:50
Um, so, yeah, so is our community a big, big
01:50 - 01:51
city, small town?
01:52 - 01:56
Um, maybe is it a suburban suburbia, which is just
01:56 - 01:57
a group of schools?
01:58 - 01:59
Uh, group of schools, group of houses?
02:00 - 02:04
Um, I would say it's a small town, right?
02:04 - 02:06
It's not like the big city of Houston.
02:06 - 02:09
So, um all right.
02:10 - 02:13
Why do you think there are jobs and businesses in
02:13 - 02:13
a community?
02:15 - 02:18
All right, They help business jobs and businesses, help people
02:19 - 02:21
in the community meet their needs and wants.
02:22 - 02:24
Okay, so let's talk about some terms.
02:25 - 02:26
What is the job?
02:27 - 02:29
Job is the type of work in which a person
02:30 - 02:30
is usually paid.
02:31 - 02:31
If it's not paid.
02:32 - 02:35
It's volunteering, but jobs usually get paid in some way,
02:35 - 02:35
shape or fashion.
02:36 - 02:41
Okay, um, businesses, alright, businesses or places where people work,
02:42 - 02:46
they make or sell things or services for people in
02:46 - 02:46
the community.
02:47 - 02:48
that they need or want.
02:49 - 02:51
Okay, so what kind of business is do we have
02:51 - 02:51
in our community?
02:52 - 02:55
Um, there's, like, the grocery store.
02:56 - 02:57
There's, like, the nail salon.
02:57 - 03:02
There's, um you know, clothing stores and things like that,
03:02 - 03:07
Um, and all those provide things for people in the
03:07 - 03:08
community and also provide jobs.
03:09 - 03:12
Um, what kind of jobs do people, you know, have
03:12 - 03:16
maybe your mom or dad, um, have different types of
03:16 - 03:20
jobs And, you know, maybe you know somebody that's a
03:20 - 03:25
policeman or somebody that works at a grocery store, all
03:25 - 03:26
kinds of different kinds of jobs.
03:29 - 03:29
All right.
03:29 - 03:31
People who live in a community are called citizens.
03:32 - 03:33
I'm sure you've heard that word.
03:33 - 03:35
Citizens of West Columbia, maybe.
03:36 - 03:39
All right, um, So let's talk about needs and wants
03:40 - 03:44
those businesses provides needs or wants What a need is
03:44 - 03:45
something people must have to live.
03:46 - 03:48
So can you think of what some needs?
03:48 - 03:52
We have our water, shelter, food.
03:53 - 03:54
Um, those are all needs.
03:55 - 03:56
Gotta have them to live, right?
03:57 - 03:58
All right.
03:58 - 03:59
Once or something.
04:00 - 04:03
People would like to have but don't necessarily need to
04:03 - 04:05
live. Like do we need an Xbox to live?
04:05 - 04:06
No, we don't need it to live.
04:07 - 04:08
We'd like to have it.
04:08 - 04:14
Um, you know, uh, like, candy candy is nice to
04:14 - 04:16
have, but it's not a It's not a need.
04:16 - 04:18
It's a want because it doesn't really provide a lot
04:19 - 04:19
of nutritional value.
04:20 - 04:20
So it's a want.
04:21 - 04:22
Okay. All right.
04:24 - 04:25
Okay. All right.
04:26 - 04:30
And all the citizens have different types of skills and
04:30 - 04:33
skills or the ability to do something Well, so when
04:33 - 04:34
you think about what kind of job you want to
04:35 - 04:37
have, think about what your skills are, what you do
04:37 - 04:39
well to help you find a job that you can
04:40 - 04:40
use those skills in.
04:41 - 04:43
Okay. Alright.
04:43 - 04:45
Next I'm going to read you a story about a
04:45 - 04:47
girl named Lily.
04:48 - 04:50
Okay. And then we'll talk about it.
04:50 - 04:52
Okay? Lily finds a job.
04:52 - 04:54
Someday. When I grow up, I'll have a job to
04:55 - 04:57
do. Thought Lily, but Lily had no idea what job
04:58 - 04:58
she wanted to do.
04:59 - 05:00
How am I going to figure this out?
05:00 - 05:02
There are a bazillion jobs out there.
05:02 - 05:05
She thought How do I know which job is right
05:05 - 05:05
for me?
05:07 - 05:10
Mm. Definitely would like a job that I would like
05:11 - 05:14
really told her friend Xander Zanker thought about the things
05:14 - 05:15
that really like to do.
05:16 - 05:18
I know you like to play soccer, he said.
05:19 - 05:20
You could be a soccer player.
05:21 - 05:22
I really like the sound of that.
05:22 - 05:25
She loves soccer, but she knew there weren't many jobs
05:26 - 05:29
for soccer players and she wasn't even one of the
05:29 - 05:32
best players on the team that got really thinking.
05:32 - 05:34
I need to find a job that I like and
05:35 - 05:35
that I'm good At.
05:36 - 05:38
That night, Lily sat down with her mother to make
05:38 - 05:40
a list of all the things she was good at.
05:40 - 05:42
She was very good at helping others.
05:43 - 05:44
How would she find a job to help others?
05:46 - 05:46
Luckily, Lilies.
05:46 - 05:48
Older brother James knew just how to help her.
05:49 - 05:50
He told her about a website he used in school
05:51 - 05:53
that would help her match what she'd like to do
05:53 - 05:53
with jobs.
05:54 - 05:57
Then she was good, and Lily's eyes lit up.
05:57 - 06:00
This was a perfect way to find a job, and
06:00 - 06:01
it was the website.
06:01 - 06:03
Help Lily find a whole bunch of jobs.
06:04 - 06:07
Being a physical education teacher sounded like something she would
06:07 - 06:09
be good at, and she could help others, too.
06:11 - 06:13
Lily slept well that night, and she knew that she
06:13 - 06:14
had a lot of time to figure it out.
06:14 - 06:14
Who knows?
06:15 - 06:15
A PE teacher might.
06:15 - 06:17
It might be the perfect job for Lily.
06:18 - 06:22
Okay, so if you look at the community map, see
06:23 - 06:24
if you can find Lily, I'll give you a hint.
06:25 - 06:25
She's got a soccer ball.
06:27 - 06:30
Okay, So it's important when we're thinking about the jobs
06:30 - 06:31
we want to match.
06:32 - 06:33
You know, you want to like your job.
06:34 - 06:35
If you're going to spend a lot of time there,
06:35 - 06:35
you should like it.
06:36 - 06:38
And to match it with the skills that you have,
06:38 - 06:40
the things that you're good at.
06:40 - 06:45
Okay. So fine thinking about that, um and then matching,
06:46 - 06:48
you know, Is it a something that there's a lot
06:48 - 06:49
of jobs for?
06:49 - 06:51
Is it gonna be hard to find a job like
06:52 - 06:54
not a lot of world champion soccer players out there?
06:55 - 06:59
Um, so maybe that might be a backup plan.
06:59 - 07:03
Or or maybe we should find a job that we
07:04 - 07:05
can. We can easily find a job for that.
07:05 - 07:07
We like and uses our skills.
07:08 - 07:15
Okay, so next everybody should get a job card.
07:16 - 07:19
Okay, So everybody get a job cardi at one job
07:19 - 07:21
card and I want you to try and read what's
07:21 - 07:22
on the card.
07:22 - 07:24
If you have difficulties, if your teacher can help you.
07:26 - 07:26
All right.
07:27 - 07:31
Um, So, for example, I've got a baker, and I'm
07:31 - 07:33
going to read what the baker does what they do.
07:34 - 07:36
Bakers bake bread cakes, cookies, doughnuts and pastries.
07:38 - 07:39
Where do they work?
07:39 - 07:39
Where do bakers work?
07:40 - 07:44
Baker's work in bakeries, grocery stores, maybe even hotels or
07:44 - 07:48
restaurants. Usually you need a high school, at least a
07:48 - 07:49
high school education.
07:50 - 07:53
Um, but some makers go to special schools, so, um,
07:53 - 07:56
they could do that to skills and duties of a
07:56 - 07:56
baker skills.
07:57 - 08:02
Remember, the things that they are good at, um, and
08:02 - 08:04
duties are things that we're supposed to do.
08:04 - 08:08
Responsibilities? Uh, measure flour and sugar roll cut and shaped
08:08 - 08:12
dough, uh, place and bake things and hot ovens have
08:12 - 08:18
reading, writing and even computer skills jobs for, uh, also,
08:19 - 08:20
uh, like chefs or cooks.
08:21 - 08:23
Okay. All right.
08:23 - 08:30
So reach your Carden, figure out what your job does
08:31 - 08:31
and think about.
08:32 - 08:34
Is that something that you would like to do?
08:34 - 08:35
Maybe. Yes, maybe.
08:35 - 08:36
No. Okay.
08:37 - 08:40
Um and then let's see if you can find your
08:41 - 08:44
person on the map.
08:44 - 08:45
Okay. Alright.
08:46 - 08:48
How does your job?
08:49 - 08:54
Um, health community, Um, maybe if they're a baker, they
08:54 - 08:58
provide people with things they need, Like bread and and
08:58 - 08:58
stuff like that.
08:59 - 09:03
Or maybe if they're a police officer to help people
09:04 - 09:04
when they're in trouble.
09:05 - 09:08
Um, so, yeah, I think about that.
09:08 - 09:13
And mhm and, uh, think about whether that's a job
09:13 - 09:14
you think would be good for you.
09:14 - 09:17
All right, So next I have some magnets for you
09:17 - 09:18
guys to take home.
09:18 - 09:19
They're all magnet postcards.
09:20 - 09:22
They looked like that.
09:23 - 09:26
Okay. And, um, thanks for watching.
09:27 - 09:27
See you next time.
