00:01 - 00:03
Hi. This is Avon Taylor, and this is my reflection
00:04 - 00:06
on lessons three and four.
00:07 - 00:11
Um, I've really got a lot out of this, These
00:11 - 00:16
readings and I feel really good about my participation in
00:16 - 00:16
the conversations.
00:17 - 00:19
I was mawr intentional with my time.
00:21 - 00:25
I was more intentional with my time and mapping out
00:25 - 00:28
my time, and it allowed me Teoh get to conversations
00:29 - 00:34
on slack and in canvas to contribute earlier on.
00:34 - 00:36
And we're meaning engagement, more meaningful.
00:38 - 00:40
Um ah, lot of what I'm reading.
00:41 - 00:43
I guess I'm filtering a lot through my own belief
00:44 - 00:48
systems, and it's causing me to reflect a lot on
00:49 - 00:52
why I have believed the things that I have about
00:53 - 00:57
Christianity. So I'm gonna talk from a personal perspective and
00:57 - 01:00
kind of drill into the readings and videos.
01:01 - 01:06
But, um, my dad is a, um was a preacher's
01:07 - 01:09
kid. His father founded a church, and my gap was
01:09 - 01:10
involved in the church.
01:10 - 01:13
Um, and then they kind of when I was growing
01:13 - 01:16
up and send me on school buses to church.
01:17 - 01:18
Um, I never had the kind of connection that he
01:19 - 01:20
had, and so mine was much more.
01:21 - 01:23
I feel like it was much more surface, and I
01:23 - 01:26
critiqued the church a lot, and I saw a lot
01:26 - 01:26
to critique.
01:27 - 01:33
Um, so I mentioned early on that my feelings about
01:33 - 01:37
religion are somewhat negative, Um, and that I wanted to
01:37 - 01:41
open my mind, and I feel like the course is
01:41 - 01:42
causing me to do that.
01:43 - 01:49
Um, the discussions from Dr Jones and and then, um,
01:50 - 01:56
uh, Dr Cole were really helpful, because I I saw
01:57 - 02:00
Dr Jones is being, um, a very well meaning man
02:01 - 02:03
who a man of faith.
02:03 - 02:05
But his faith is much more traditional in the way
02:05 - 02:10
that that I see, um, a lot of christians of
02:10 - 02:15
goodwill. Um, Dr Cole, however, um, his the way he
02:15 - 02:20
saw both his religion and his faith and also disability
02:21 - 02:23
within it and how it opened up.
02:23 - 02:27
His perception of other other people within the church and
02:28 - 02:30
the way that he kind of described what the church
02:31 - 02:34
is and what his faith is was very attractive to
02:34 - 02:37
me. And I was, um I was surprised by that.
02:37 - 02:39
I was very moved by it.
02:40 - 02:43
Um, and it just was much more philosophical approach.
02:44 - 02:50
Um, then I am used to, um, in discussions from
02:50 - 02:55
religious leaders Um, and that philosophical approach appealed to me
02:55 - 02:59
Has, um I think a lot about the meaning and
02:59 - 03:02
the meaning of life, of the meaning of why we're
03:02 - 03:06
here. And I honestly don't look to religion as much
03:07 - 03:10
when I have those questions that I'm wrestling with.
03:10 - 03:14
Um, and I found it very interesting that Dr Cole
03:14 - 03:17
does. So that kind of caused me to think.
03:18 - 03:22
Well, what is it that I, um Why don't I
03:22 - 03:25
look to religion and I think back to something my
03:25 - 03:28
father always said, which was that the purpose of life
03:28 - 03:28
was not to be happy.
03:29 - 03:32
The purpose of life was to be useful, and I
03:33 - 03:36
I didn't agree with that, but I didn't also connected
03:37 - 03:39
to the way that he saw religion.
03:40 - 03:43
He saw his Christianity as rules, rules of how society
03:44 - 03:48
works, um, and ways that people get along with each
03:48 - 03:51
other within a culture because it gives them a list
03:51 - 03:51
in the book of rules.
03:52 - 03:55
Um, that is not the way Dr Cole sees his
03:56 - 04:00
faith. Um, he sees this faith as a guide post
04:01 - 04:01
for meaning.
04:02 - 04:07
And, um, that is very interesting to me.
04:07 - 04:11
And so meaning was something that I kept looking at
04:11 - 04:14
and seeing in our other readings, um, related to the
04:15 - 04:16
meaning of disability.
04:17 - 04:20
Um, and there were different answers.
04:21 - 04:22
Some, like for Dr Cole.
04:24 - 04:30
He found meaning and purpose in his disability that gave
04:30 - 04:34
him a lens in order to see more and to
04:34 - 04:38
embrace more within his community to see other perspectives and
04:39 - 04:41
marginalization within his community that spoke to me.
04:42 - 04:46
But in the trans crypt reading, one of the things
04:47 - 04:51
that that stuck out to me was the author saying,
04:51 - 04:56
um, and this is in page page 3 62 Um
04:57 - 05:01
um Coalitional Transcript Time of miss fitting must resist this
05:01 - 05:07
kind of rehabilitation and capacity its capacity invitation without however,
05:07 - 05:10
discounting the pain and suffering of the misfit, refusing to
05:11 - 05:15
become inability machine must not entail either dismissing or glorifying
05:16 - 05:19
the pain of miss fitting rushing to either a sign
05:19 - 05:22
it meaning or refuse it any possibility of meaning.
05:23 - 05:26
Instead, we must try to hold open miss fitting as
05:26 - 05:29
a space time of potential, but by no means guaranteed
05:30 - 05:34
eruption of alter all tear ity into daily life.
05:34 - 05:39
Um, for this I turned to liturgical theology and I
05:39 - 05:44
just found that really interesting that um, you would see,
05:45 - 05:45
I think I lost Where?
05:46 - 05:51
Okay, um, that rushing to find meaning Or to, um
05:52 - 05:58
ascribe meaning, um according to just frame, um, frame of
05:58 - 05:59
thinking and lens.
06:00 - 06:05
Um, would not Would not be correct any anymore than
06:05 - 06:07
saying there that it is completely meaningless.
06:08 - 06:09
Um, it is a potential.
06:10 - 06:10
It is.
06:10 - 06:15
Um it is constant change and flux and ways of
06:15 - 06:24
thinking, Um, about the transcript, body and experience, Um, and
06:25 - 06:31
about life, Um, that you can't just a fix something
06:31 - 06:34
to you can't just a fixed meaning to it.
06:34 - 06:38
Um, and so that has given me a lot to
06:38 - 06:38
think about.
06:39 - 06:42
Um, because, like, according to that reading, there's a both
06:43 - 06:49
and it's both and and neither, um that maybe it
06:49 - 06:49
is meaningful.
06:50 - 06:50
Maybe it's meaningless.
06:51 - 06:53
Um, maybe we don't know.
06:53 - 06:56
But there's the potential for meaning, and there's there's the
06:56 - 06:57
possibility that it's not there.
06:58 - 06:59
It's all encompassing.
07:00 - 07:02
And And when I think about it that way, and
07:02 - 07:04
I feel like I'm speaking so metaphysically, But when I
07:04 - 07:07
think about it that way, that's what a lot of
07:07 - 07:12
faith traditions believe it of God, right?
07:12 - 07:13
God is everything.
07:14 - 07:16
The Alfa and the Omega the beginning in the end
07:17 - 07:18
and everything in between.
07:19 - 07:26
And, um, this way of thinking about about the both
07:26 - 07:30
the medical model and the social model of disability.
07:31 - 07:37
Um, it's the potentials for all of that in this
07:38 - 07:41
experience of be as a person with disabilities.
07:42 - 07:45
Um, and that that is a religious experience.
07:46 - 07:50
Um, if I'm not going, it has the potential to
07:50 - 07:51
be a religious experience.
07:51 - 07:56
It's the connection, right between spirituality and disability.
07:57 - 07:59
So it's given me a lot to think about.
08:00 - 08:03
Clearly, my mind is still turning, but, um, those air
08:03 - 08:07
my thoughts, and I feel I'm really glad that I'm
08:07 - 08:08
taking this course.
08:09 - 08:09
Thank you.
