00:02 - 00:04
Hi everyone, my name is Kristen.
00:04 - 00:08
And for the final project I decided to focus
00:08 - 00:14
on teaching history and specifically teaching about the holocaust.
00:18 - 00:23
So my rationale behind teaching about the holocaust is first,
00:23 - 00:28
I love teaching history because I love learning about history myself.
00:28 - 00:33
Um currently I teach second grade, I've been teaching second grade for five years,
00:33 - 00:38
but I would love to eventually maybe teach an older group of students
00:38 - 00:40
about the holocaust.
00:40 - 00:44
So why is it important that students learn about the holocaust?
00:44 - 00:48
Students need to learn about difficult topics such as the holocaust in order
00:48 - 00:52
to make sure that they grow up to be well rounded citizens.
00:57 - 01:04
An overview on my topic. Um racism is a major problem in our society.
01:04 - 01:07
It affects millions of people, including Children each day.
01:08 - 01:12
Individuals are treated differently based on the color of their skin,
01:12 - 01:16
their religion, their economic status, and more.
01:16 - 01:18
Our world really needs to change.
01:18 - 01:20
And as a teacher,
01:20 - 01:24
I feel strongly that it's our responsibility to ensure that our students are aware
01:25 - 01:28
of the history of racism and hatred in our world.
01:28 - 01:32
In order to ensure that discrimination and hate comes to an end.
01:32 - 01:35
We need to teach students about the past.
01:35 - 01:38
So one sensitive topic that I think is really
01:38 - 01:42
important for students to know about is the holocaust.
01:42 - 01:43
Um it's
01:43 - 01:49
usually a really hard subject for teachers to talk about because it's so horrific.
01:50 - 01:54
Um and extremely sensitive and many individuals don't know how
01:54 - 01:58
to approach the topic of teaching about the holocaust.
01:58 - 02:04
However, if we don't approach it, then our students won't be aware of it and
02:05 - 02:07
we need to ensure that our
02:07 - 02:11
students are educationally and socially developed individuals
02:11 - 02:16
we need to discuss and teach about sensitive issues such as the holocaust
02:17 - 02:21
in order to make sure that our students are culturally and socially aware
02:22 - 02:24
of the world that we're living in.
02:24 - 02:27
Um it's essential that our seem to understand
02:27 - 02:30
that simply standing by and not doing anything
02:30 - 02:33
can have a perpetuating negative effect when faced
02:33 - 02:37
with social social injustice in the world today.
02:37 - 02:40
And in essence it's important to understand history
02:40 - 02:43
in order to prevent future acts of violence.
02:43 - 02:46
So it's something that I feel strongly about
02:46 - 02:49
and um I enjoy learning about the holocaust and I think
02:49 - 02:55
students need to know about it in order to be um socially
02:55 - 02:57
just citizens.
02:58 - 03:00
Over the course of this semester,
03:00 - 03:05
we learned about different modes of teaching
03:05 - 03:07
and different types of literacy that students
03:07 - 03:12
need to know in order to be um digital citizens in our world today.
03:12 - 03:15
So I find that it's important that students should be
03:16 - 03:20
learning about history using multiple modes, such as watching videos,
03:20 - 03:23
looking at photographs, reading literature,
03:23 - 03:25
learning about the topic in a variety of ways.
03:25 - 03:30
Um one of the best ways to learn about history is to recount it through documents.
03:30 - 03:34
So I would include this in my teaching of the holocaust.
03:34 - 03:37
Um I would also include videos and recounts
03:37 - 03:40
from those who are affected by this history.
03:40 - 03:44
So I feel that in terms of the holocaust,
03:44 - 03:48
I would use videos and literature that were written
03:48 - 03:51
from the perspective of victims of the holocaust.
03:51 - 03:54
It's extremely deep and touching to hear
03:55 - 04:00
um those recount what happened during the holocaust and what they went through.
04:00 - 04:06
Um it's emotional and raw, but it can clearly define how horrific this actually was.
04:08 - 04:15
So my approach to teaching my students about the holocaust would start with
04:16 - 04:19
a lesson in which they just discuss
04:19 - 04:26
themselves their identity things that they like and create a graphic organizer
04:26 - 04:30
in which they share the special things about themselves just to get
04:30 - 04:34
them engaged and get them to think about how everyone is special
04:34 - 04:38
in their own way and how everyone is different and everyone's unique.
04:38 - 04:41
Um I would then start
04:41 - 04:44
the actual teaching of the holocaust with
04:44 - 04:45
a K. W. L. O.
04:45 - 04:48
Chart what my students know about it,
04:48 - 04:51
what they want to know and what they have learned about.
04:51 - 04:55
It would obviously come after the unit as a post unit
04:56 - 04:57
um wrap up
04:58 - 05:05
during my unit. I would engage my students in learning through watching videos.
05:05 - 05:10
Um as I was researching this, I came across this website,
05:10 - 05:15
the holocaust encyclopedia, which is through the holocaust museum
05:16 - 05:21
and it provides a lot of really good information and documents related to the
05:21 - 05:27
holocaust that are wonderful for students to look at and absorb information from.
05:27 - 05:32
Um I also came across a video in which kids meet with a holocaust survivor.
05:32 - 05:37
And so I have my students watch that video and think about, you know,
05:37 - 05:41
the questions that these kids are asking and maybe come up with
05:41 - 05:45
a question of their own that they might ask a holocaust survivor.
05:45 - 05:46
Um
05:46 - 05:50
through the unit, I would also incorporate literature.
05:50 - 05:56
Um I recall reading number of the stars when I was in elementary school and I
05:56 - 06:01
really enjoyed that story and so I'd have my students um read this story with me,
06:01 - 06:04
we would probably read chapter every day
06:04 - 06:07
and discuss it in literature circles and giving
06:07 - 06:13
my students each their own job as part of the discussion in their literature circle.
06:14 - 06:16
Um and finally
06:17 - 06:27
I came across um this butterfly project which is um actually very cool. They use
06:30 - 06:31
these butterflies
06:32 - 06:39
As a way to remember the 1.5 million Children who were killed during the Holocaust.
06:39 - 06:45
So students create a butterfly and it's really just a way to teach students about
06:45 - 06:49
social justice through lessons on the Holocaust educating
06:49 - 06:54
students about the dangers of hatred and um
06:54 - 06:58
being able to cultivate empathy with others and social responsibility.
06:58 - 07:02
So I would have my students participate in this as well.
07:02 - 07:04
Um at the end of the unit,
07:04 - 07:09
I would create almost like a social justice wrap up for my students.
07:09 - 07:12
Um just so I know that they are really,
07:12 - 07:17
it's really hitting home that we have to treat others with kindness.
07:17 - 07:22
We have to be, you know, socially just humans in this world.
07:22 - 07:29
Um so that was my presentation and I hope you enjoyed it.
07:29 - 07:33
And um, I have all of these resources as well.
07:33 - 07:39
If anybody is interested in using them for, you know, their students as well.
07:39 - 07:40
Thanks.
