  18. Today we're here to talk about three very special leadership classes that can hurt.
  19. These are elective classes that involve the opportunity to travel to incredible
  20. places to serve and learn like Catalina Island and Costa rica.
  21. These elective classes are highly involved in school wide projects
  22. and initiatives that engage our community in some cool ways.
  23. There are three classes that include a travel component.
  24. They are cornered cares, Global leadership and environmental leadership.
  25. You are not required to apply for one of these leadership classes and you're welcome
  26. to take any of the other amazing electives that 8th grade has to offer you.
  27. All of these electives require students to apply for a
  28. seat in the class due to space limitations and travel.
  29. The good news is that all three of these classes use a common application.
  30. This means that students can apply for placement in any
  31. one of these classes by completing a single application.
  32. Before we learn how to apply,
  33. let's check out what each of these travel leadership classes has to offer.
  34. Kennard cares stands for community action results, environment and service.
  35. We believe in providing students authentic experiences that reflect the
  36. civic responsibility that they will face in the real world.
  37. That means we do a lot of cool hands on learning around the school.
  38. This includes running our school compost program,
  39. building an outdoor learning center with our new greenhouse growing dome,
  40. giving green school tours to visitors and interacting with sixth grade students to

  42. speaking of kelp forests are class also takes a once
  43. in a lifetime trip to a very special place.

  63. This project is run entirely by the
  64. students who developed committees for marketing,
  65. communications collection, competition, incentives and more.
  66. In the second semester of the course,
  67. we focus on intercultural communication as we prepare for a
  68. 7-10 day trip to Costa Rica while in Costa Rica,

  86. with a unique opportunity to explore their own leadership potential.
  87. With an environmental twist.
  88. The goal of this class is to broaden students self awareness while
  89. simultaneously discovering the importance of connecting
  90. with the natural world around them.
  91. Students enrolled in the environmental
  92. leadership class will engage in exploratory
  93. and hands on activities focused on developing personal and leadership skills
  94. through experiential and service learning activities.

  100. provide opportunities for empowerment to benefit themselves and our community.
  101. Environmental leadership also takes an epic trip
  102. to catalina island California in the spring.
  103. This trip serves to bridge the gap between our classroom
  104. studies and the amazing outdoors while on the island,
  105. students engage in activities such as kayaking, snorkeling climbing,
  106. as well as outdoor service projects like tree planting and trail building.
  107. You can see pictures and learn more about our class by visiting
  108. our website canard E N V L dot weebly dot com.
  109. We hope you find these opportunities interesting and exciting.
  110. Now let's talk about how to apply for these elective classes,
  111. as we mentioned earlier cares G.
  112. L. And E L. All use the same application.
  113. If you fill out one application it can be used to apply for any or all the classes.
  114. In fact we encourage you to apply for all of them.
  115. Remember while you can apply for all the classes,
  116. students can only be selected for one.
  117. We want to include as many students as possible,
  118. so placing students in just one class allows us
  119. to include as many different students as we can.
  120. Now let's explain the steps.
  121. Step one navigate to the application website at www
  122. dot tiny U R L dot com slash canard.
  123. Student leadership and research each of the classes by linking to class websites,
  124. videos and social media pages.
  125. It is highly recommended that you looked extensively at the linc classes websites
  126. to inform your application answers and explore which
  127. course maybe the best fit for you.
  128. Step two after you're clear on which of the courses you will be applying for,
  129. complete the initial google survey at www dot tiny U
  130. R L dot com slash canard sorry slash K I N
  131. leader survey prior to completing the full application heads up.
  132. This short survey is also linked below and it's due soon.
  133. Well before all other application materials
  134. as indicated by the highlighted deadline
  135. listed on the leadership application page,
  136. step three,
  137. download and print your application or pick up a hard copy at
  138. school in the student services office or in your science classroom.
  139. This packet will include many important steps like attaching a picture
  140. of yourself so we can begin to learn who you are
  141. and obtaining apparent signature for approval to participate
  142. in travel written essay prompts and more.
  143. One of the most important parts of the application is a space for you to rank your
  144. desired classes in the order of which you
  145. hope to be placed after researching the courses,
  146. whichever classes your top choice goes on the number one line.
  147. If you and your family are comfortable
  148. applying for multiple classes then we encourage you
  149. to apply for and rank as many classes as you can by ranking multiple classes.
  150. This increases our ability to place you in one of the three programs.
  151. However, please only mark classes that you and your family would accept if offered.
  152. Do not mark classes that you would not accept a spot in.
  153. Carefully.
  154. Consider things like trip cost,
  155. travel destinations and class content before ranking your class choices.
  156. Our goal will be to use these rankings as priorities for your consideration in each
  157. class we will put you in the application pool of your top ranked course first.
  158. If you rise as a top applicant, you will be placed in your top ranked class.
  159. If you do not make the cut in your top choice.
  160. Your application will then be moved to your 2nd
  161. and 3rd range classes until the placement is made.
  162. This is why we encourage you to apply for all classes because it
  163. allows us the best opportunity to successfully include you in one of our programs
  164. keep in mind that we usually have more applicants than spots available.
  165. So not all students who complete an application will
  166. be guaranteed to make one of our leadership rosters.
  167. Once you have attached a picture, rank your class choices,
  168. uh obtained a parent's signature,
  169. you are ready to complete the written essay
  170. prompts that are included in the application.
  171. We would recommend writing one quality paragraph for each of the questions.
  172. This means that you're finished.
  173. Application will include multiple paragraphs for us to read
  174. Step four.
  175. After you finish the written portion of the application,
  176. you will need to print your great report.
  177. Please staple a copy of your first sorry crap town.
  178. Step four.
  179. After you finish the written portion of the application,
  180. you will need to print your grade report.
  181. Please staple a copy of your final first semester grades for all
  182. of your classes behind your application packet and written essay responses.
  183. Step five as you will read in the application essays.
  184. One of the criteria that we highly value in our
  185. selection process is your current teachers input and rankings.
  186. Please do not ask your teachers for a recommendation
  187. but know that we will be taking our final
  188. list of applicants to all seventh grade teachers to
  189. ask for input as part of our selection process.
  190. There's nothing for you to do as a student for
  191. this step but we just wanted you to be aware that
  192. your character work ethic and behavior in all of your
  193. seventh grade classes is a big factor in our decision making
  194. Step six.
  195. In addition to your application packet,
  196. we would also love to see your personality and
  197. leadership style shine in a flip grid video submission.
  198. Please navigate to www dot flip grid dot com slash Canard leadership.
  199. For more instructions on how to produce your video,
  200. you will have the choice to simply hit the record button to film
  201. yourself or you can edit and upload your own video for your submission.
  202. Once you're done with your video, you will be asked to upload a profile picture,
  203. make sure you represent yourself in a professional way that is well lit
  204. and shows us your best smile with no extra stickers or emojis.

  211. your video will be private and only viewable by our teacher team.
  212. No students will have public access to your application video.

  214. it's time to turn in your hard copy application
  215. in room 524 or 526 before or after school.
  216. Do not drop off or leave your application unattended.
  217. Please wait and hit it directly to one
  218. of the leadership teachers when they're present.
  219. So we can confirm that you have turned it in.
  220. Be extra aware of the due dates listed on the application and the website.
  221. No late applications will be accepted.
  222. Keep in mind our goal is to successfully place all applicants in a leadership class.
  223. However, we often have more applicants than spots available.
  224. We encourage you to be thorough and do your absolute best to make sure
  225. you give us the best picture of who you are as a student.
  226. The top applicants for each class will be selected based on the fulfillment of all
  227. requirements that we've discussed and must stand out at a level beyond their peers.
  228. After top candidates have been placed,
  229. any remaining spots will be filled using a
  230. random lottery for all other qualified applicants.
  231. If all rosters filled to capacity,
  232. some students may not be selected for any of the programs.
  233. We will be releasing a final roster for students who were selected each
