00:01 - 00:04
Hello. My name is Brian Patterson and I am your
00:04 - 00:06
students, us history teacher here at Helix.
00:07 - 00:11
This is back to school 2021, school year, I'd like
00:11 - 00:13
to start off with some contact information.
00:13 - 00:18
My telephone number is uh this helix telephone number which
00:18 - 00:20
is (619) 644 1940.
00:22 - 00:24
And my office extension is 345.
00:25 - 00:27
But the best way to get a hold of me
00:27 - 00:28
is through email.
00:29 - 00:33
That email is Paterson at Helix Charter.net a little bit
00:33 - 00:33
about me.
00:34 - 00:36
I graduated from Fresno State with a degree in history.
00:37 - 00:40
This is my 18th year at Helix eighth year working
00:41 - 00:41
with the U.
00:41 - 00:42
S. History department.
00:43 - 00:45
And I also serve as the H.
00:45 - 00:46
V. A.
00:46 - 00:47
Coordinator at Helix.
00:47 - 00:50
And that stands for the Helix Virtual Academy.
00:51 - 00:54
My job is the coordinator is just to help uh
00:54 - 00:59
facilitate coordination between students and other teachers working in the
00:59 - 01:00
virtual academy.
01:01 - 01:03
Um, Syllabus main points.
01:04 - 01:06
I'd like to just start off with units of study.
01:06 - 01:09
We just finished our first unit on imperialism.
01:09 - 01:12
We're going to be getting into the 19 twenties and
01:12 - 01:13
the Great Depression.
01:13 - 01:15
Next followed by World War Two.
01:15 - 01:19
And then we will end the quarter with 19 fifties,
01:19 - 01:22
conformity uh starting quarter to, we're going to start off
01:22 - 01:24
with the Cold War and then we get into Vietnam.
01:25 - 01:28
We get into civil rights and then there is a
01:28 - 01:32
mad dash last unit 1970s all the way through 9
01:32 - 01:34
11. A brief history.
01:35 - 01:38
Um in terms of grades, here's here's how everything is
01:38 - 01:43
broken down 60% of your students grades will be weighted
01:43 - 01:48
through assessments and 40% of your students grade will be
01:48 - 01:48
weighted through coursework.
01:49 - 01:54
Um so in terms of how the class normally runs,
01:55 - 01:56
I have what's called D.
01:56 - 01:56
B. Q.
01:56 - 01:58
Assignments, D B.
01:58 - 02:00
Q stands for document based questions.
02:01 - 02:05
So I will give historical documents and then ask them
02:05 - 02:10
specific questions to find quotes or to explain um the
02:10 - 02:14
significance of quotes in primary source historical documents.
02:14 - 02:19
We also cover current events most school days And students
02:19 - 02:22
are asked to summarize the current events every week as
02:23 - 02:24
well as give me an update on one of the
02:25 - 02:25
current events that we covered.
02:26 - 02:30
Um I also give vocabulary words or key terms and
02:31 - 02:33
we have quizzes on that every week.
02:33 - 02:37
And then finally unit exams which would fit into that
02:37 - 02:42
60% assessment piece and the unit exams come at the
02:42 - 02:42
end of each unit.
02:43 - 02:47
They are accumulative exams and students get points for their
02:47 - 02:51
notes. Uh there's multiple choice component as well as a
02:52 - 02:53
writing component to that assessment.
02:54 - 02:58
Um In terms of keys for success, what's really important
02:58 - 03:02
is that you check canvas regularly to make sure that
03:02 - 03:06
your student is on track and um has their work
03:06 - 03:10
turned in their attendance and their participation is really important.
03:11 - 03:13
I do my best not to give any homework.
03:14 - 03:19
I try to formulate the itinerary in my class every
03:20 - 03:22
day so that we can maximize time and get all
03:22 - 03:25
of our course work done while they are in the
03:25 - 03:25
class with me.
03:26 - 03:28
And that way, if they have any questions I'm right
03:28 - 03:29
there to answer.
03:29 - 03:34
And then um the last key to success is to
03:34 - 03:37
make sure your student is taking adequate notes and uh
03:38 - 03:42
in quiz lit um is studying the key terms that
03:42 - 03:44
they will be assessed on every week.
