  1. hi and welcome to back to school night 2020 style
  2. online. I hope that at least a couple of you
  3. actually watch this as this is the fourth time that
  4. I've done it.
  5. So I'm gonna get started here because I tend to
  6. get long winded.
  7. My name is Jennifer Roberts.
  8. I am special education teacher here of the Freshman Academy
  9. for Language Arts and Oklahoma History Essentials.
  10. I have been in this building for 20 years and
  11. work that drinks for 22 years.
  12. I actually started here as a teacher of community for
  13. community education and, um, started working with some kids with
  14. special needs.
  15. My degree from Oklahoma State University was actually an elementary
  16. education and history, so I didn't really know all about
  17. special education and the large number of students that air
  18. served by special education.
  19. When I started to learn about that, I thought that
  20. is definitely that student group that I want to work
  21. with. And so I went and receive certification in my,
  22. um P K through 12 mild to moderate disabilities and
  23. also received, um, my certification in English so that I
  24. could teach English also, So I currently have elementary education,
  25. uh, special education, P k through 12 history and English
  26. language arts as certifications.
  27. And I've been around for quite a long time.
  28. So I hope that I am able to, um, do
  29. the best job for your student that I can.
  30. As I said, I have been here 20 years.
  31. I've been the coordinator for the building.
  32. I have taught every subject except for science.
  33. And I have been, um, part of special Olympics for
  34. a long time and also worked with all the different
  35. peers. And, um, now, I also helped sponsor key club,
  36. so I tried to stay busy.
  37. I love being here and being part of the community.
  38. I do live in jinx.
  39. So it is a privilege to get to work and
  40. live in the same community and see my students grow
  41. up and be members of the same community.
  42. Um, I have second our plan, which means that from
  43. you Look at the time.
  44. 10 15 to 11.
  45. 05 I am available to, um call you or email
  46. you back.
  47. I would suggest emailing me at jennifer dot roberts, jinx
  48. p s dot or ge and then coming back.
  49. And, um letting me call you if you need me
  50. to call you or just answering it that way.
  51. Um, that's the fastest and easiest way My phone extension
  52. is 2546 But I'm not gonna lie.
  53. I don't check it all the time because, well, it
  54. just doesn't work that well.
  55. So, uh, email is definitely the way to go.
  56. Um, we do have tutoring available.
  57. If your student needs it, I would prefer to help
  58. them myself, at least if I can, if they need
  59. extra tutoring.
  60. National Honor Society, Key club.
  61. And there are several teachers that help with tutoring.
  62. Uh, not sure the students will need a lot tutoring
  63. in my class.
  64. But if they do, then please let me know.
  65. And I can help hook you up with some sources.
  66. Um, all of my, um, subject matter, everything that we're
  67. doing is on the canvas calendar.
  68. I kind of posted right here a picture of what
  69. the class link page looks like.
  70. That's where the students confined pretty much anything they need
  71. to any programs through the district and then on canvas
  72. itself, which is that very first right there.
  73. Little one is canvas and um they should be able
  74. to find out their courses on there and my calendar.
  75. I only really have Goto week for for the module
  76. or things like that, um, in the modules area of
  77. my classes, where they confined what we've done.
  78. It's a lot of work sheets or anything like that.
  79. The way I run my class is very personal, which
  80. is why, um, it was very hard to do distance
  81. learning. But, um, do whatever I have to do that
  82. make things successfully for your child this year.
  83. Um, I do wanna throw in here really quickly.
  84. Um, I've been really impressed.
  85. They've been wearing their masks.
  86. They've, you know, every once in a while I see
  87. them start to slip down, and I have to ask
  88. them to police pull them back up.
  89. But they they've done a great job.
  90. Luckily, the largest class I have is 15 students, so
  91. that's not, um ah lot.
  92. And I'm actually able to social distance a little bit
  93. better than some of the other teachers.
  94. Still not the 6 ft apart that I would like
  95. it to be.
  96. But we do have a little bit of room in
  97. here um, to not be on top of each other.
  98. I am cleaning in between classes or giving the students,
  99. um, something to clean with us.
  100. They come and if they want and have plenty of
  101. hand sanitizer.
  102. But if you just feel like spending some money and
  103. getting me some hand sanitizer or paper towels or Clorox
  104. wipes or Lysol, um, I sure would love it.
  105. I do have a wish list on Amazon that I
  106. will have on my canvas page of books and different
  107. supplies. Since we're not sharing supplies, it's really important that
  108. your child gets to school with their backpack with, um,
  109. something to write with from my class.
  110. They need their chromebook, a writer's notebook and a independent
  111. read book.
  112. Um, they all know Thetis, but they may not have
  113. them. Um, their writer's notebook is just this, Um, I
  114. did a video while we were on distance, learning on
  115. how to set it up and eso that's still available
  116. on canvas.
  117. If they need that, um, you might ask them to
  118. see their writer's notebook.
  119. Is there private thoughts?
  120. So I check it to see that they're working in
  121. it, but I rarely will sit and breathe everything because
  122. I do want them to have the flexibility and the
  123. ability to just sit down and write what they need.
  124. Thio Um and then we try to work on some
  125. of those things.
  126. The way my class is set up is they come
  127. in every day and they're supposed to have their chromebook
  128. and the writer's notebook and their independent read, um, sitting
  129. on their desk when the bell rings and then the
  130. first five minutes is, um, my doing a book talk
  131. which justice?
  132. Something for me to, um, share different books that I
  133. have in the classroom.
  134. Tell them about them.
  135. And some book talks are longer than others, depending on
  136. how much I like book.
  137. But just to let them know what I have and
  138. what's out there, Then we go into independent reading time.
  139. They only have 10 to 15 minutes to read independently,
  140. so I don't assign homework.
  141. I assigned reading.
  142. I really, really need them to read at least four
  143. days a week.
  144. 20 minutes a week obviously were in kindergarten anymore, but
  145. we're not gonna log that, but we're logging books that
  146. we finished and I would like them to have actually
  147. read six books by the end of the year.
  148. Um, really, it should be more, but, um, hoping that
  149. six is the least and it can be audiobooks.
  150. It could be graphic novels.
  151. It could be magazines.
  152. It can be, um, fiction, nonfiction, anything that will get
  153. them reading than that they enjoy.
  154. I want them to get back to that place in
  155. their life like a first grader, where when the teacher
  156. says it's book time or reading time, they're super excited.
  157. I want that feeling to come back into their lives
  158. because there will be other classes that they have to
  159. read things in that they won't enjoy.
  160. So my thought is, if they enjoy it and they
  161. can better their reading skills, then they will be able
  162. Thio do better in their other classes.
  163. I try to tell them that the most important So
  164. a ZAY said they have the independent reading time, and
  165. then we moved into, um, Writer's notebook time, and we
  166. do different things in there.
  167. Um, right now, my biggest thing is getting them to
  168. put pencil to paper and writing anything out.
  169. Um, as they do that I model doing it, and
  170. I bright in my writer's notebook also, um, they're told
  171. right now to write anything they can think of or
  172. draw or whatever.
  173. Then, after we've done that, then I moved into a
  174. mini lesson.
  175. I try to only teach 15 to 20 minutes of
  176. actual lecturing so that they can, um, have time to
  177. practice Whatever skilled is we're working on, we're getting ready
  178. to move into elements of story.
  179. Will use short stories so that they have just a
  180. very small thing to work with, but dialogue and tone
  181. and all those great things that they need to know
  182. about being a writer and a reader.
  183. Um and then we try to practice that skill and
  184. then we debrief and then the class is over, so
  185. it moves really quickly.
  186. We have a lot of things to dio.
  187. Um, that's why I tell them Thio, we don't wanna
  188. waste a lot of time trying to find pencils or
  189. find things.
  190. You know, if they can keep it all together, it's
  191. just gonna be a lot easier.
  192. And also this year we can't share supplies, so please
  193. make sure they have their own pencils and their notebook.
  194. And, um, if they can't or you need help with
  195. that, please let me know.
  196. I did give about 10 notebooks out Friday.
  197. So the students that didn't have one yet, Um, other
  198. things. Um, man, I just, um really, really, really ask
  199. that you keep them reading, talk to them about what
  200. they're reading.
  201. Um, do some questions with them, you know, Tell me
  202. about what you're reading.
  203. Oh, you're not reading the same book as you were
  204. yesterday. What happened?
  205. Did you don't like it?
  206. Um, all different kinds of things like that Just, um,
  207. talk to them and ask them to do the reading.
  208. And I promise that they will really, really, really, um,
  209. grow in that throughout this year.
  210. If we can get them to do that.
  211. Um, that's really it.
  212. I look forward to having a great year with them,
  213. and I look forward Thio meeting some of you hopefully
  214. and please let me know if you need anything from
  215. me. I am.
  216. Just email away is I can do anything to help
  217. you make your lives easier with teenagers.
  218. Tha kn that's what I'm here for.
  219. So have a great night and Thank you for listening.
  220. Please. Please make your kids read and have all their
  221. stuff. Um, it's gonna be a great year.
  222. I promise.
  223. Thank you.
