00:01 - 00:01
Hello, everyone.
00:02 - 00:05
My name is Professor Schwartz, and my cat on Its
00:05 - 00:08
and I are bringing you an overview of what to
00:08 - 00:12
expect in I A H 209 film noir this semester
00:13 - 00:13
for the fall of 2020.
00:15 - 00:17
So we're going to talk quickly about what course focuses
00:18 - 00:21
the kinds of assignments and projects that I'll be asking
00:21 - 00:24
you to complete skills that you will practice and finally
00:25 - 00:27
will wrap up in just a few minutes, talking about
00:27 - 00:30
how this course is actually relevant to your real lives.
00:31 - 00:34
So let's jump in and start off with coarse focus
00:35 - 00:36
in I.
00:36 - 00:39
H. 209 film noir You will be examining the bleak,
00:39 - 00:42
pessimistic, visually interesting crime thriller.
00:43 - 00:47
Movies produced during the 19 forties and fifties will be
00:48 - 00:52
examining thes movies through the lenses of gender, sexuality, race,
00:53 - 00:55
ethnicity, class and identity.
00:56 - 00:59
The interesting thing about these films is that very often
00:59 - 01:03
they provide critiques of US society and the American dream
01:04 - 01:07
ethos that has held sway since the end of World
01:07 - 01:07
War two.
01:10 - 01:13
Refer to the syllabus and course schedule on d2l for
01:13 - 01:15
more details about this particular course.
01:18 - 01:19
Now let's look at the kinds of assignments and projects
01:20 - 01:22
that I'll be asking you to complete over the next
01:22 - 01:28
15 weeks, so there will be 10 individual reflections at
01:29 - 01:32
two points each, for a total of 20 possible points.
01:33 - 01:36
You will start turning these in next week at the
01:36 - 01:39
end of Week two, and there will be one do
01:39 - 01:42
every week, usually at the end of the week through
01:43 - 01:47
Week 13 you will be working in student learning teams
01:48 - 01:52
to produce a newscast or talk show article review video,
01:52 - 01:54
which will be due in Week five.
01:54 - 01:58
This is worth 20 possible points a little later in
01:59 - 01:59
the semester.
01:59 - 02:02
During weekend, you will be working together to produce a
02:03 - 02:06
reader's guide, also at 20 possible points.
02:07 - 02:09
As we near the end of the semester in December,
02:10 - 02:13
you will be working with your teammates to produce an
02:13 - 02:16
academic poster put together using power point.
02:17 - 02:19
And finally, at the very end of the semester, each
02:20 - 02:24
student in the course will be responsible for drafting an
02:24 - 02:28
individual semester reflection, also worth 20 possible points.
02:29 - 02:32
Everything taken together, it gives you a nice round 100
02:33 - 02:39
possible points for the course moving right along.
02:39 - 02:41
Let's talk a little bit about some of those skills
02:42 - 02:46
that you can expect to practice in this course, so
02:47 - 02:49
students will be practicing critical thinking.
02:49 - 02:54
What this is is self guided, self disciplined thinking that
02:54 - 02:58
attempts to reason at the highest level of quality in
02:58 - 02:59
a fair minded way.
03:00 - 03:03
Students in the course will also be practicing what is
03:03 - 03:05
called meta cognitive thinking.
03:06 - 03:08
This is thinking about your own thinking.
03:09 - 03:12
You're learning your personal choices and your work happens.
03:13 - 03:16
In addition, students in the course will be practicing something
03:17 - 03:18
called integrative Learning.
03:19 - 03:23
This is looking for and finding connections between the work
03:23 - 03:26
that you do in this course and your other coursework.
03:26 - 03:31
Outside of I H 209 Fillmore as well as real
03:31 - 03:34
life, you'll be looking to establish connections between all of
03:34 - 03:34
those things.
03:35 - 03:38
Finally, students in the course will be practicing high impact
03:39 - 03:45
activities. These are team based, self reflective, writing intensive activities
03:46 - 03:50
that feature a diversity of materials, experiences and points of
03:50 - 03:55
view. Now all of that's very well and good, but
03:55 - 03:57
it takes us to our fourth point in this short
03:58 - 03:58
overview video.
03:59 - 04:03
How is I H two on nine actually relevant to
04:03 - 04:03
your real life?
04:04 - 04:05
Well, here's help.
04:05 - 04:10
Consider this the association of American colleges and universities reported
04:11 - 04:15
in 2014 following a study that the capacity to think
04:16 - 04:21
critically communicate clearly and solve complex problems is more important
04:22 - 04:23
to employers than ones.
04:24 - 04:26
Exact undergraduate major.
04:27 - 04:31
In addition, 21st century employers report that they need more
04:32 - 04:35
entry level hires with polished soft skills.
04:35 - 04:39
That is, people skills, the ability to work with a
04:39 - 04:44
wide variety of people and personality types to complete various
04:44 - 04:46
projects in an efficient way.
04:48 - 04:51
This course provides you with an opportunity to practice and
04:52 - 04:55
refined those soft skills, which will make you more competitive
04:56 - 04:57
in the real world.
04:58 - 05:03
It So that brings us to the end of this
05:03 - 05:04
overview video for I.
05:04 - 05:06
H. 209 film noir.
05:07 - 05:10
In the next several days, be sure to visit your
05:10 - 05:12
d2l course pages for this particular course.
05:13 - 05:17
Read carefully through the syllabus, the course schedule, the project
05:17 - 05:20
packets and all of the other materials that are already
05:21 - 05:23
uploaded there and waiting for you to begin.
05:24 - 05:27
I will see you basically each week with another overview
05:28 - 05:30
video, depending on what we're talking about for a given
05:31 - 05:34
week, and we will be in touch via those videos
05:34 - 05:38
as well as e mails and also during office hours,
05:38 - 05:39
which will start in week two.
05:40 - 05:41
Thanks so much.
05:42 - 05:42
Bye bye
