Audio TranscriptAuto-generated 00:00 - 00:02 Hey, everyone, it's Jato Donald from working daily. 00:02 - 00:04 And today I want to share with you my Prezi 00:05 - 00:09 on big ideas for 2000 and 21 specifically around how 00:09 - 00:11 the pandemic has changed career outlooks. 00:18 - 00:20 So I'm gonna walk you through four main areas. 00:20 - 00:22 First, we're going to talk about priorities. 00:23 - 00:25 So one of the things that's happened over the course 00:26 - 00:27 of the last nine months is that people have really 00:27 - 00:28 put their priorities in order. 00:29 - 00:31 They've had a lot of time Thio, evaluate and think 00:31 - 00:32 about various things. 00:32 - 00:35 And when you do that kind of self reflection, there's 00:35 - 00:37 a super opportunity for you. 00:37 - 00:40 Thio. Apply what you've learned about yourself to your career, 00:40 - 00:41 so let's take a closer look. 00:43 - 00:44 So, first of all, just looking at your career as 00:45 - 00:47 a whole, it's really important to be honest with yourself 00:47 - 00:49 and say, Am I happy with the way my career 00:49 - 00:50 is now? 00:50 - 00:52 Based on all that's changed in the world, all that's 00:52 - 00:52 changed in my own life. 00:53 - 00:55 Is this really the career path that I want to 00:55 - 00:57 embark upon or is now the time to start thinking 00:57 - 01:00 about making a very strategic change and move more towards 01:01 - 01:03 things that would make me feel happier and more satisfied. 01:06 - 01:10 We're also going to find ourselves evaluating our physical self 01:10 - 01:11 right during the pandemic. 01:12 - 01:15 You know, some people got super fit and other people 01:15 - 01:17 used food and other things as a way to kind 01:17 - 01:19 of, you know, self medicate. 01:19 - 01:21 Either way, you look at it as we go forward 01:21 - 01:21 in 2021. 01:22 - 01:24 I predict that health and wellness will play a huge 01:25 - 01:28 role because we'll want Thio feel stronger again and, you 01:28 - 01:31 know, make healthier choices, which puts us in a much 01:31 - 01:35 better position, physically and mentally, to go after new career 01:35 - 01:40 changes. And, of course, that does lead into mental self. 01:40 - 01:41 I mean, what a year for us to think about 01:42 - 01:45 this. I don't think anybody hasn't been impacted some way 01:45 - 01:47 mentally with all of the dramatic changes that have gone 01:47 - 01:49 on. In fact, there are studies that show that when 01:49 - 01:52 a large group of people, when a society goes through 01:52 - 01:54 a dramatic change like the one we have, it takes 01:54 - 01:56 us all from a happiness level of here down to 01:56 - 01:58 here. But when it's over and we come out of 01:58 - 02:00 it, the good news is usually the whole group ends 02:00 - 02:01 up happier overall. 02:02 - 02:04 So I think that's very encouraging news for anyone that's 02:04 - 02:04 kind of been suffering. 02:05 - 02:09 Maybe with, you know, depression or anxiety, there are going 02:09 - 02:10 to be opportunities in 2020. 02:10 - 02:11 Make that better. 02:11 - 02:13 And I think figuring out what you want to do 02:13 - 02:15 in your career and moving towards something that makes you 02:15 - 02:17 feel happier is one of the ways to help you 02:17 - 02:18 support yourself in that mission. 02:23 - 02:25 And then, of course, there's family and friends relationships. 02:26 - 02:29 We've strengthened a lot of relationships This year we've realized 02:30 - 02:32 which relationships really count, and probably to some degree which 02:32 - 02:33 ones don't. 02:33 - 02:35 So I think you're going to see people, um, expanding 02:36 - 02:39 and making certain relationships of priority in 2021 also think 02:39 - 02:41 we're gonna see a lot of people letting go of 02:41 - 02:42 toxic or unhealthy relationships. 02:43 - 02:45 That's very important because your relationships play a huge role 02:46 - 02:48 in your ability to, um, pursue a career path that 02:48 - 02:49 makes you happy. 02:49 - 02:51 So you need to surround yourself with people who support 02:51 - 02:51 that mission. 02:55 - 02:57 Alright, lastly, hobbies and recreation. 02:57 - 03:00 This part, I think, is probably most exciting to me. 03:00 - 03:02 There's something I always say right now. 03:02 - 03:03 The bigger the disruption the bigger the innovation. 03:04 - 03:05 And what I mean by that is that the massive 03:06 - 03:09 amount of disruption that's happened, especially when it comes to 03:09 - 03:11 careers and work, is going to bring about a lot 03:11 - 03:11 of innovation. 03:11 - 03:14 New companies, new ideas, new job titles, new roles, new 03:15 - 03:18 opportunities and one place where I think that's gonna be 03:18 - 03:19 particularly huge is in hobbies and recreation. 03:20 - 03:22 A lot of people have picked up all sorts of 03:22 - 03:25 hobbies and a new pastimes as a result of the 03:25 - 03:28 crisis and are finding that these might be things they 03:28 - 03:29 could turn into income. 03:29 - 03:31 You know, we were already in what they called a 03:31 - 03:33 gig economy before the pandemic hit. 03:33 - 03:35 I think we're gonna see more and more people pivoting 03:35 - 03:38 towards building hobby careers that might even turn into full 03:38 - 03:38 time careers. 03:41 - 03:43 All right, so now we're gonna move on, and we're 03:43 - 03:48 gonna start to talk about, um, those growth moments whenever 03:49 - 03:51 we have a trauma like this, when whenever we have 03:51 - 03:55 something this dramatic happen, Um, there's always a lot of 03:55 - 03:56 post traumatic growth, and you can look that up. 03:56 - 03:59 It's a really thing, and the thing that we have 03:59 - 04:01 to think about is that we can apply post traumatic 04:01 - 04:03 growth in a lot of constructive ways to our career. 04:03 - 04:05 So first of all, it might be a full on 04:05 - 04:05 career change. 04:06 - 04:07 You might realize you know what? 04:07 - 04:09 I'm done this cruise not fulfilling to me anymore. 04:10 - 04:12 It's not taking me the direction I want to go 04:12 - 04:17 in. I'm going to do something about it, Another place 04:17 - 04:17 we're going to see. 04:18 - 04:20 Growth is this idea of flexibility over money. 04:20 - 04:22 I think one of the deciding factors for many people 04:23 - 04:23 will be. 04:23 - 04:24 Do I really want this job where I feel like 04:25 - 04:25 I'm a slave to it? 04:26 - 04:27 I'm working on these crazy hours just for a few 04:28 - 04:28 extra bucks? 04:28 - 04:30 Or do I want to free myself and take a 04:30 - 04:32 lesser paying job that offers me a lot more flexibility 04:33 - 04:38 and creates a healthier lifestyle, and then another area we're 04:38 - 04:40 going to see this is in the overall definition of 04:40 - 04:41 success s. 04:41 - 04:43 So this is something that's been important to me for 04:43 - 04:44 the last 20 years. 04:44 - 04:46 I've always focused on career coaching to help people feel 04:46 - 04:49 more satisfied in their careers, and the way to do 04:49 - 04:51 that is to redefine success on your own terms. 04:52 - 04:53 I think a lot of people are going to say, 04:54 - 04:57 G. I realize now I've been following society's expectations with 04:57 - 04:59 me or other people's expectations of me and pursuing definitions 05:00 - 05:02 of success that didn't really work for me. 05:02 - 05:04 And I think when you wake up from that and 05:04 - 05:06 you realize you can craft your own definition of success, 05:06 - 05:07 you open up a lot of career doors. 05:11 - 05:13 Okay, then we're moving on and we want to talk 05:13 - 05:16 about innovation when it comes to careers, because that's gonna 05:16 - 05:17 be a big topic. 05:17 - 05:18 What did I tell you? 05:18 - 05:19 Bigger disruption, bigger the innovation. 05:20 - 05:23 Lots of new careers, not toe blue cos I mean 05:23 - 05:24 the next Google apple, Facebook. 05:24 - 05:26 All these companies are going to start to come out 05:26 - 05:28 of the woodworks as a result of the massive change 05:29 - 05:30 that we've seen over the last year. 05:32 - 05:34 So, as I said, one way that you'll be able 05:34 - 05:36 to make a career change is turning hobbies into careers. 05:37 - 05:39 Um, you know, we live in a NW, influence the 05:39 - 05:40 world in a storytelling world. 05:41 - 05:43 Social media Lots of people are learning how to monetize 05:43 - 05:47 and build careers, giving away advice and and doing crafts 05:47 - 05:50 and other things and and sharing all of that on 05:50 - 05:51 social media. 05:51 - 05:53 So that's just one way that I see hobbies becoming 05:54 - 05:56 careers. But I think other people will take their hobbies 05:56 - 05:59 and realize there's certain aspects or skills that they've developed, 05:59 - 06:00 that they could apply to full time jobs. 06:00 - 06:02 There's lots of ways to take your hobbies, the things 06:03 - 06:05 that you love to dio and use them to make 06:05 - 06:05 your career better. 06:09 - 06:10 Of course, it's getting creative with careers. 06:11 - 06:12 This is another thing I think we're going to see. 06:12 - 06:14 People are gonna go in and say, You know, this 06:14 - 06:15 job doesn't fulfill me anymore. 06:15 - 06:17 I want to craft a new job for myself. 06:17 - 06:18 Here's how I can create value. 06:19 - 06:21 Most important thing we can remember is that companies hire 06:21 - 06:23 us because we save or make them enough money to 06:23 - 06:24 justify our cost. 06:24 - 06:27 Once we figure that out, we can start to look 06:27 - 06:29 for the ways that we would prefer to deliver that 06:30 - 06:31 value. And that's how we could start to customize a 06:32 - 06:37 career path and create something new for ourselves and, of 06:38 - 06:39 course, redefining brand new role. 06:39 - 06:42 So when you have something like this that has, like, 06:43 - 06:48 just completely decimated everything we've ever known about career and 06:48 - 06:49 work and how companies should be run. 06:50 - 06:52 The result is that a lot of new jobs get 06:52 - 06:54 created to address all the new concerns. 06:55 - 06:57 And if you take a look at how your industry, 06:57 - 07:00 your job, your company has been disrupted, I guarantee they're 07:00 - 07:02 thinking about some new things that have to be managed. 07:03 - 07:04 If there is something of interest to you there that 07:04 - 07:06 could be the new career direction, the new path, the 07:06 - 07:07 new job that you take on. 07:08 - 07:13 But you have to look forward and identify it all 07:14 - 07:17 right, and lastly, we're going to talk about preparing for 07:17 - 07:17 the ships. 07:17 - 07:20 So listening to this information, I'm hoping that I'm inspiring 07:20 - 07:23 you to realize that there's some serious opportunity out there. 07:23 - 07:24 You know what we look for? 07:25 - 07:25 We get. 07:25 - 07:27 So if we look for roadblocks and we look for 07:27 - 07:29 problems and we look for failure, that's what we're going 07:29 - 07:29 to get. 07:30 - 07:32 But if we look to the future with excitement, if 07:33 - 07:34 we look for innovation, if we look for no ideas, 07:35 - 07:37 we'll find those two, especially when it comes to our 07:37 - 07:39 career. But we still need to prepare for it. 07:41 - 07:42 So the first thing I'm going to tell everyone to 07:42 - 07:43 do is a skills assessment. 07:44 - 07:46 You wanna think about all the skills that you currently 07:46 - 07:49 have and any new skills that you've acquired during the 07:49 - 07:52 pandemic and then prioritize them and figure out which ones 07:52 - 07:53 you want to leverage the most. 07:53 - 07:55 What skills do I have? 07:55 - 07:58 And what skills do I that air new do I 07:58 - 07:59 think I can use to create value? 08:00 - 08:01 That's what you're trying to make happen. 08:02 - 08:03 You also want to think about your shortfalls. 08:03 - 08:04 You have to be realistic. 08:04 - 08:05 None of us are perfect. 08:05 - 08:08 So if you're looking for a new career direction, you 08:08 - 08:10 could take all these transferrable skills with you. 08:10 - 08:12 But you should also figure out where my gaps and 08:12 - 08:13 how might be able to close those gaps with training, 08:14 - 08:15 education or something else. 08:18 - 08:20 Now, after that, I want you to think about your 08:20 - 08:22 network. We say your network is your net worth at 08:22 - 08:24 work a daily, and the more your networking, especially online 08:25 - 08:27 right now, works considered completely acceptable, the better. 08:28 - 08:30 Lincoln has done many studies to show that we are 08:30 - 08:33 all probably about six degrees of separation away from our 08:33 - 08:35 next job, and that many of us will get our 08:35 - 08:36 jobs for something called weak Ties Week. 08:37 - 08:39 Tiger, When you know somebody who knows somebody who works 08:39 - 08:42 at a company you wanna work for, they make the 08:42 - 08:45 introduction and they're not, you know, overly vouching for you. 08:45 - 08:46 They're just putting you together. 08:46 - 08:49 But that mere connection through somebody else elevates the chances 08:50 - 08:50 that you get the job. 08:51 - 08:53 This is the kind of networking that will become so 08:54 - 08:55 important as we move forward. 08:59 - 09:01 And, of course, learning how to tell your story. 09:01 - 09:03 Social media has made us all storytellers. 09:03 - 09:05 We live in a storytelling world for as long as 09:05 - 09:06 we can remember. 09:06 - 09:09 Storytelling is the most memorable way for somebody to hold 09:09 - 09:11 an idea or a thought in their head like a 09:11 - 09:11 light bulb. 09:12 - 09:14 So what we have to do is tell compelling stories 09:14 - 09:17 when we're out networking so that people remember us that 09:17 - 09:19 way when they hear about a job or an opportunity 09:20 - 09:22 like a light bulb will come to mind and they 09:22 - 09:23 will reach out to us. 09:23 - 09:25 And this is where this all brings it together. 09:28 - 09:30 The most important thing I can tell you is that 09:30 - 09:33 leaving a lasting impression when you're telling your stories is 09:33 - 09:34 to create that Ah ha moment. 09:34 - 09:37 So make sure that whatever you're sharing has something really 09:38 - 09:41 important and insightful to say so that it is more 09:41 - 09:43 memorable to the people that you're sharing it with. 09:47 - 09:48 So there you have it, folks. 09:48 - 09:51 The four steps that we're all going to go through 09:51 - 09:55 a SAS realize, Understand, as we head into 2021 especially 09:56 - 09:58 if we're thinking about making a career shift. 09:58 - 10:00 I hope I gave you a lot to think about 10:00 - 10:01 today with this presentation. 10:02 - 10:05 Remember, if you wanna win, you gotta work it daily. 10:05 - 10:08 So take this information, carve out 10 minutes a day 10:08 - 10:11 and start thinking about what you want in your career 10:11 - 10:14 in 2021 beyond and realize the sky's the limit, because 10:14 - 10:16 again, the bigger the disruption, the bigger the innovation. 10:17 - 10:20 And if you look for opportunity, you will find it
