00:01 - 00:08
Hi, my name is Natalie Sarmento and um this is my reflection of module one,
00:09 - 00:11
so for this reflection,
00:11 - 00:14
we were asked to answer the following questions and the first one
00:14 - 00:18
is um what is digital literacy and why is it important?
00:19 - 00:24
So um Digital literacy is vital in our world today
00:24 - 00:28
um even to be able to communicate with others,
00:28 - 00:32
it's very important in every aspect of our lives um
00:32 - 00:37
whereas it is work education or in our social environments
00:37 - 00:42
um and what that means is um digital literacy is
00:42 - 00:47
just about how we navigate and communicate through digital environments,
00:47 - 00:52
which means it's not only being able to do the basic
00:52 - 00:57
things such as turning on the computer um but actually being
00:57 - 01:00
able to interact with it and use it as a tool
01:00 - 01:06
to help us in whatever any one of this environment.
01:08 - 01:13
Now, the next question was, what should students be able to do with technology?
01:15 - 01:20
Uh So I listed a few things that I believe are
01:20 - 01:24
very important that students learn how to do and become um
01:25 - 01:32
like very easy for them to do so and they are access information
01:32 - 01:36
and after they research through the web so that they can stay informed,
01:37 - 01:41
ah they should also be able to access learning tools
01:42 - 01:46
and communicate with others and share knowledge.
01:46 - 01:49
I think it's very important that we exchange the good things that
01:49 - 01:54
we learn um whereas it is the students or as teachers.
01:54 - 01:57
So I think these are very important skills I
01:57 - 02:00
personally believe that students should learn how to do.
02:02 - 02:03
Now.
02:03 - 02:06
The next question is how can using technology increase
02:06 - 02:10
access to the curriculum for students with special needs?
02:10 - 02:14
I was very fond of this question because I have a brother
02:14 - 02:20
with special needs um to whom technology has become a very,
02:20 - 02:26
very, very useful tool for everyday um just everyday things that he needs to do.
02:27 - 02:34
Um I also liked that the professor mentioned giving students a voice
02:35 - 02:40
um and allowing them to interact with the world around them in ways
02:40 - 02:45
that they wouldn't be able to do otherwise without the help of technology.
02:45 - 02:52
And I love the example of media, uh sorry, I didn't mean to click that.
02:52 - 02:58
Um Mia has severe autism but is able to communicate through an innovative app
02:58 - 03:03
which allows her to create verbal messages through simple commands on the phone,
03:03 - 03:08
such as swiping up for yes or down for no.
03:09 - 03:12
So I thought that was very, very, very awesome.
03:13 - 03:19
Next question is, what are your three fears about using technology in education?
03:19 - 03:22
So one of my fears is an
03:22 - 03:33
unexpected failure. So I think that um what I mean by that is if I become very
03:34 - 03:39
um reliant on technology and something unexpected happens
03:39 - 03:41
while I'm trying to teach my class.
03:41 - 03:47
I, one of my fears is just wasting their time trying to figure out how to fix it,
03:47 - 03:54
which leads to my next fear, which is lack of digital literacy,
03:54 - 04:01
which obviously it's something that as educators, we should strive to acquire.
04:01 - 04:02
Um
04:03 - 04:08
but there might be some new skills that we might have
04:08 - 04:12
to have the future as teachers that I might like.
04:12 - 04:18
So that's another fear I have and that one is lack of resources for students.
04:18 - 04:23
What I mean by that is I do not want
04:23 - 04:27
to turn community or teaching entirely to
04:27 - 04:30
technology because there might be the case
04:30 - 04:36
in which a student is not able to access um computers or internet,
04:36 - 04:37
whatever it is.
04:38 - 04:43
Um So I don't want anybody to miss out on the opportunity to learn.
04:44 - 04:46
And those are my three fears.
04:47 - 04:49
The next question is,
04:49 - 04:54
what are three ways in which you think using technology and education
04:54 - 04:58
will be exciting or change the way teaching and learning can happen.
05:00 - 05:03
So the first way I thought of is that
05:03 - 05:06
technology offers new ways of thinking and problem solving.
05:07 - 05:14
Um as we have talked before nowadays is easier to um
05:14 - 05:22
attend the class without physically vendor or filling out a work application
05:22 - 05:25
without having to print out the form and turn it in physically,
05:26 - 05:28
which leads to my
05:28 - 05:29
next stop,
05:30 - 05:34
which was technology gets rid of physical barriers like
05:34 - 05:37
I just mentioned and like the example of MiA
05:39 - 05:43
and the third one is technology empowers the students to expand their
05:43 - 05:50
horizons and what I mean is um through technology students are able to
05:51 - 05:57
creatively find ways to make um education and
05:57 - 06:00
learning better and more interactive for themselves.
06:00 - 06:05
Um Students with disabilities are able to access a
06:05 - 06:11
lot of accommodations uh through technology which helps them
06:12 - 06:12
learn
06:13 - 06:16
in better ways, in ways they wouldn't be able to do otherwise.
06:17 - 06:20
Um So that is the end of my reflection.
06:21 - 06:24
Um I really, really liked
06:25 - 06:27
MODULE one and I am excited about
06:27 - 06:29
continuing learning.
