Danielle Dunafan Field Lab
Audio Transcript
Auto-generated
00:01 - 00:06
Hi. Okay. So I did my field lab over Soundcloud.
00:06 - 00:11
Um, I picked this one because even though it's not, um,
00:12 - 00:13
I guess I can't see you either.
00:13 - 00:14
I didn't do,
00:14 - 00:18
or I start with my students and I asked them like which ones they use the most.
00:18 - 00:20
Um, as far as social media and everything.
00:21 - 00:25
Um, everyone said either Snapchat instagram or Tiktok,
00:25 - 00:28
even though some of them aren't, that took up was not like
00:28 - 00:31
a form of media, but I told him it was, um,
00:31 - 00:35
but the kids who used SoundCloud felt like very passionate about it.
00:35 - 00:38
So I went ahead and picked this one. So
00:39 - 00:39
sure.
00:40 - 00:44
Um, what is SoundCloud and why is that an important piece of pneumonia?
00:45 - 00:50
Um, what it is the place where people can go to create and listen to music.
00:50 - 00:54
So their website says, um, it's the most diverse creator community on earth.
00:55 - 01:00
Um, I was wondering how accurate this is with Tiktok nowadays, but um,
01:00 - 01:02
it definitely has
01:03 - 01:07
kind of, it's a lot easier to use. It's a lot more user friendly.
01:07 - 01:09
It's cheaper and it's more
01:10 - 01:14
interface friendly as far as like phones and apps and other extreme Ng services.
01:14 - 01:16
So I do know that it reaches a lot of people who would be
01:17 - 01:21
otherwise underrepresented as far as uploading and stuff goes.
01:21 - 01:27
Um, so some key features of it. It's free to upload music free to stream.
01:27 - 01:30
Uh, there are paid services that you can use.
01:30 - 01:33
Um, and I'll talk about those in a little bit, but for the most part,
01:33 - 01:34
you can do everything free.
01:35 - 01:35
Um,
01:35 - 01:39
playlists can connect you with new artist and then the artists of the
01:39 - 01:42
abilities to check their listeners and know how their music is doing.
01:42 - 01:44
So stats and that kind of thing.
01:44 - 01:45
Yes.
01:46 - 01:50
Um and so popular because it's easy to use. There's an app and the web based
01:50 - 01:52
um you can do everything from your phone,
01:52 - 01:55
which I know it's like part of why something of my students,
01:55 - 01:57
I get so much because the only
01:58 - 02:01
device or technology, if they have as a phone, they don't have
02:01 - 02:05
a recording studio or microphones or those kinds of things.
02:05 - 02:07
Um so this is like really easy for the
02:07 - 02:11
videos and then also Soundcloud rappers are the um
02:12 - 02:17
kind of like redefine the genre of rap music. And so we'll talk a little bit more to
02:18 - 02:19
mm hmm,
02:19 - 02:20
Excuse me.
02:21 - 02:27
Um so some history. It started in 2007 but officially launched in 2008.
02:27 - 02:32
Um but it all started with kind of the ideas of these two guys. So the main one was Alex
02:33 - 02:34
chung, I don't know how to say his name.
02:34 - 02:39
Um but he was really passionate about music and creating and so
02:39 - 02:42
he created his first album in his room as a teenager.
02:43 - 02:47
Um and he realized that it was really difficult not only to produce it but
02:47 - 02:50
to get it out and to share with people and he did not like that.
02:50 - 02:53
So he went to college um and kind of
02:53 - 02:58
studied human computer interaction to see how we use
02:58 - 03:01
computers basically as a form of social media and
03:01 - 03:03
how we use it to make our lives easier
03:03 - 03:05
and get things out to other people.
03:05 - 03:09
Um and he created Sangsad after studying
03:09 - 03:13
online sociology and meeting with other platform creators
03:13 - 03:16
um here to this guy eric, he co founded it.
03:16 - 03:20
Um They both actually stepped back from SAm Cloud
03:21 - 03:25
um and then both of them are electronic music creators.
03:26 - 03:27
Okay.
03:29 - 03:29
Mhm.
03:31 - 03:32
Okay, that was weird.
03:32 - 03:38
Um So how this has evolved is it stayed pretty true to the vision of the creators,
03:38 - 03:41
which was basically a place where people who go to
03:41 - 03:44
create and share and stream those kinds of things.
03:44 - 03:44
Um
03:45 - 03:49
But obviously as things grow and get bigger over time they have to change,
03:49 - 03:51
so that's what happened.
03:51 - 03:54
Um The first thing that changed was the purpose,
03:54 - 03:59
so originally it was for just putting single song tracks out
03:59 - 04:02
and getting your work online and it wasn't anything big,
04:02 - 04:05
it was just like, hey, I recorded this, I put it on,
04:05 - 04:09
I want to share um now it's for creating and sharing albums,
04:09 - 04:10
podcasts and interviews.
04:11 - 04:16
Um Well it like shifted towards that and then even more now um
04:16 - 04:21
it's for releasing music in order to reach fame and monetize your work.
04:21 - 04:21
So
04:22 - 04:24
um the shift there was like,
04:24 - 04:30
it went from just songs to people are putting full albums on there.
04:32 - 04:36
Um also the money making purpose has changed, obviously it's gotten bigger,
04:36 - 04:37
they had to
04:37 - 04:42
Hiring people get more code contact like those kinds of things, so that costs money.
04:42 - 04:46
Um so originally everything was free streaming and uploading um
04:46 - 04:50
than in 2014 they started this thing called on Soundcloud,
04:51 - 04:54
which allowed creators to make money off of their work. Um
04:55 - 05:00
So basically they could advertise and they were on
05:00 - 05:03
Soundcloud and then they could pair with advertisers,
05:03 - 05:08
so they got money through the advertisers stuff they paired with
05:08 - 05:12
and then SoundCloud company because that was a charged service.
05:13 - 05:15
And then in 2017,
05:15 - 05:20
Soundcloud go plus um allowed streamers to pay for different features,
05:20 - 05:23
like skipping selecting songs, um
05:24 - 05:27
Not having to have everything on shuffle those kinds of
05:27 - 05:30
things that are pretty standard across all music streaming sites.
05:31 - 05:35
Um And then now different plans are available for content creators,
05:35 - 05:38
including upload hours and data tools,
05:38 - 05:41
so it just kind of depends on what you're doing,
05:41 - 05:44
but there still are free options um it just
05:44 - 05:46
depends on like how serious you get about it.
05:46 - 05:47
So
05:52 - 05:56
okay, so influencers who kind of pioneered SoundCloud,
05:57 - 06:03
um there was this guy xxx temptation um he started on SoundCloud in 2013
06:04 - 06:06
and his thing was that he
06:07 - 06:12
got big on SoundCloud and then signed and became,
06:12 - 06:16
I really had a record deal after that, so everything that he did originally,
06:16 - 06:18
it was kind of self made on Soundcloud.
06:19 - 06:21
Um So he started on
06:22 - 06:23
In 2013,
06:23 - 06:26
he was one of the first soundcloud rappers with
06:26 - 06:29
female rap and the lo fi kind of sounds.
06:29 - 06:33
So he helped kind of change that music genre.
06:33 - 06:38
Um his first album was released in 2017 and then he was killed in 2018.
06:38 - 06:43
So here's a picture of him and then also I've included
06:44 - 06:48
I guess because he is no longer with us, he does not have a SoundCloud account,
06:48 - 06:53
but here's a playlist that someone has made right here of his work.
06:54 - 06:54
Mhm.
06:54 - 06:55
Yeah.
06:55 - 06:59
Um The next one that I wanted to touch on was the little Hussey.
06:59 - 07:03
Um So he started his own sound on Sound cloud.
07:03 - 07:07
Um He drew on both like emo rap and like Atlanta trap.
07:07 - 07:11
Um He kind of really changed the sound of rap.
07:11 - 07:15
So I grew up listening to like nineties rap which has a very specific sound.
07:15 - 07:17
Um And then I was like the early two
07:17 - 07:20
thousands are up which is like another specific sound,
07:20 - 07:22
very like turn on the radio now to rap music stations,
07:22 - 07:26
it is totally different than what I missed you and he
07:26 - 07:29
it's kind of the reason for that. So um
07:30 - 07:35
but like mumble rap genre and kind of doing his own thing.
07:35 - 07:38
He also like totally because he
07:38 - 07:40
made his own thing on town called,
07:40 - 07:42
he wasn't signed so you have to follow anyone's
07:42 - 07:47
record deals or like kind of expectations from companies.
07:47 - 07:49
Um He did his own thing,
07:49 - 07:54
so he like wears girl clothes and loves Paramore and does his own,
07:54 - 07:55
um,
07:55 - 07:59
like he was just complete, he's got the pink diamond in his forehead,
07:59 - 08:01
like he does his own thing, you know, it kind of tells him anything.
08:01 - 08:05
And then even once he did sign, they signed him for his him ness,
08:05 - 08:07
so he didn't have to change.
08:07 - 08:13
Um, here's a picture of him and then here's his Soundcloud here.
08:16 - 08:20
Um and last, but I wanted to talk about is Kehlani, so she,
08:21 - 08:22
it's kind of a different story.
08:22 - 08:25
The first two guys that I talked about like made it big
08:25 - 08:28
on SoundCloud and then got signed and then continued to grow.
08:28 - 08:33
Um, but Keilani, she released the song Anti Summer Love on SoundCloud.
08:33 - 08:36
Um, Nick Cannon found it inside her
08:36 - 08:39
and then um, she became famous and blew up.
08:39 - 08:44
So she's not like one of the people who got big on Soundcloud and then got sign.
08:44 - 08:49
Um but she did more kind of similar like what Justin Bieber did with Youtube
08:49 - 08:54
or Tiktok creators have done where they were discovered and then they got big,
08:54 - 08:56
but she still does put all of her stuff on Soundcloud.
08:56 - 09:00
Um, and she kind of goes back to that as her
09:01 - 09:07
um, you know, she has a lot of homage to them. So here's her and here is her
09:07 - 09:09
um account.
09:09 - 09:19
So why is this important to the urban youth? Um self expression is so big,
09:20 - 09:22
especially for like young men of color where
09:22 - 09:25
they feel like they cannot express themselves,
09:25 - 09:26
they
09:27 - 09:31
are able to do this in a way that they're like previously what I've been able to,
09:31 - 09:32
so that's really awesome.
09:32 - 09:34
Um, inspiration,
09:34 - 09:39
especially when you talk about like little Uzi who was
09:39 - 09:42
totally able to be himself and make it big and
09:43 - 09:43
um,
09:43 - 09:46
that kind of thing that gives them kind
09:46 - 09:48
of the inspiration that they can be themselves.
09:49 - 09:53
Um, and then our students who do come from like maybe not a lot of money,
09:53 - 09:55
they don't see education as a way out.
09:55 - 10:00
Um, you know, they think that they could make it as a Soundcloud rapper,
10:00 - 10:01
so inspires them,
10:02 - 10:06
um, to create their content and get it out there, um, skill learning opportunities,
10:06 - 10:11
just learning how to record and edit and post those kinds of things, um,
10:11 - 10:12
communication,
10:12 - 10:17
Um, as they are trying to get their stuff out and working with other people, um,
10:17 - 10:18
confidence building,
10:18 - 10:23
it takes so much confidence to stand up in front of the class and say you guys
10:23 - 10:27
want to hear my new soundcloud song and play a rap in front of 30 other students,
10:27 - 10:31
um, much less all of your friends who will definitely clown on you for it.
10:31 - 10:32
Um, so
10:33 - 10:36
there's a confidence from that and then just connections with other people who
10:37 - 10:39
have you Soundcloud or like maybe if they
10:39 - 10:41
are getting discovered or those kinds of things.
10:41 - 10:43
So, um,
10:44 - 10:48
yes, so here are my sources, Soundcloud of a few articles
10:49 - 10:52
and yeah, that's it. Thank you guys.
