  1. everybody. That's Ryan and welcome to our lecture series on
  2. the marketing plan.
  3. So the marketing plan is, you know, one of those,
  4. um, core learning objectives for both of my marketing classes
  5. here at CBC and to do like a complete marketing
  6. plan is usually like a 25 to 50 page report
  7. that would include, you know, a lot of research and
  8. a lot of work.
  9. It's really something that's done Well, um, if it's something
  10. that's done well, it's something that takes, like, six months
  11. to 12 months to really perform, So obviously it's not
  12. something doable in one of my class settings.
  13. But what we'll do for for this course is we
  14. will take a look at, you know, um, the different
  15. areas of the marketing plan.
  16. And then kind of like if you were to create
  17. a new product, what are some of the things you
  18. need to consider?
  19. You won't?
  20. Well, I will not have anybody writing out of complete
  21. marketing plan, but just kind of filling in some parts
  22. of a template.
  23. That show, which is, is how a lot of your
  24. projects work, right?
  25. So just showing that you understand what the different parts
  26. of the the marketing plan consists of.
  27. So we'll do a quick overview of kind of what
  28. a marketing plan it is and what it does, what
  29. it's used for, that we'll take a look at the
  30. analytics process because having a marketing plan and then adhering
  31. to that plan are two different things and then can.
  32. So can you put together some analytics that do a
  33. good job in tracing how well you're doing following your
  34. marketing plan and then do you do something about it?
  35. So those are the three areas will look at, and
  36. we should able to get through this into lectures, you
  37. know, in 30 minutes or less pretty easily.
  38. So let's take a look at marketing the marketing plan
  39. and the analytics process.
  40. Uh, we're looking at creating a plan and excess assessing
  41. its success.
  42. We're hoping to learn.
  43. Here is the different elements of marketing and how they
  44. fit together for a marketing plan.
  45. Discuss why marketing analytics are so important for tracking success
  46. and then defining marketing analytics and the different approaches that
  47. you can take.
  48. Um, and the types of metrics to track will go
  49. a little bit light in that area because and I
  50. won't require you to do that for this course.
  51. So a marketing plan just to define it is a
  52. comprehensive strategy, writes that big picture strategy that covers how
  53. the marketing management needs to be done.
  54. How, what the managers like, what the managers need to
  55. manage, what kind of processes they need to put into
  56. place for a specific product or specific service.
  57. Right? So when you're looking at your portfolio of products,
  58. you would take a look at like, Okay, what's the
  59. marketing plan for that product?
  60. What's the marketing plan for this service?
  61. You can also put together a marketing plan for a
  62. business, but, uh but yeah, usually in a larger company,
  63. you're taking a look at a marketing plan for given
  64. product or given service.
  65. Um, so I'm going to zoom in here, but what
  66. I I skipped a whole bunch of potential slides and
  67. decided to just focus on one slide that shows all
  68. the different elements of the marketing plan.
  69. You actually will find this in your case, study in
  70. the resources so it's really helpful there, and you'll use
  71. this same format for your case study Okay, so but
  72. a few words before I zoom in on on this
  73. right? You need to understand.
  74. I think it's important to understand that you can break
  75. down the marketing planet.
  76. Two distinct sections.
  77. It's not, like just a kind of like, Well, here's
  78. the plan, right?
  79. The plan can be broken up into specific sections that
  80. we can look at and say, Okay, well, what about
  81. this? What about this part?
  82. What about that part?
  83. Um, what you'll see is done here that I like
  84. what they did with the marketing plan here.
  85. Is it split up into three different colors, the green
  86. stuff. Then you got the red one in the middle
  87. and then blue at the end.
  88. And before I get into each one individually, the green
  89. stuff is kind of like the analysis of the current
  90. situation. Okay, it's taking a look at where are we
  91. now and then asking the strategic question of where do
  92. we want to be?
  93. Right. Who are we?
  94. What is the situation like that?
  95. We're in?
  96. Um, what do we want to accomplish here?
  97. Right. Those kind of questions are really important.
  98. Um, and then we'll get into the positioning stuff and
  99. positioning super important, right?
  100. It's the strategic analysis that says, Okay, um, you know,
  101. let's take a look at everything in the green area,
  102. right? Everything above it.
  103. And let's, um, put together a tactical plan that follows
  104. that green area.
  105. Right? Well, we spent a whole week talking about position
  106. here at least half of a week, right?
  107. So it's it's taking everything you learn about who you
  108. are and who your customers are, and then putting yourself
  109. there. Okay, so that part is really important.
  110. And then the blue section is where you start to
  111. look at, um, the tactics that you're actually going to
  112. be putting into place, right, the seven ps of marketing
  113. in this case and then kind of like what measures
  114. we can put into place.
  115. So let's take a closer look at it, and I'm
  116. gonna disappear here.
  117. But, um, there's a couple of things that I really
  118. like about this, Um, first of all that.
  119. Like I said, the color coding part makes it really
  120. easy to understand.
  121. And you're gonna have to fill out each of these
  122. boxes basically for your final project.
  123. But it all starts with brand identity, right?
  124. What gets us up in the morning?
  125. What's you know?
  126. And so when you when you look at this for
  127. a company that you didn't start right, you really have
  128. to do some analysis and really think about it and
  129. watch some videos and and read up on the company
  130. and figure out you know who Who are they, right?
  131. What? Really, You know, every company thinks they're in business
  132. to make a profit.
  133. And that's not true, right?
  134. What are they really all about?
  135. Okay. And then you're going to do things like taking
  136. a look at, Well, who is our target market.
  137. And you guys have done this.
  138. What's the buyer persona?
  139. What's the product, right?
  140. You're going to be creating a brand new product for
  141. this company.
  142. And most importantly, what needs gap?
  143. Does it fill right?
  144. What's what are what are people out?
  145. What's your target market missing?
  146. That your product or your service is going to fill,
  147. right? And then the situation analysis, right?
  148. We've done some talk on that, but like a SWAT
  149. analysis or what are some other things that are happening
  150. out out in the environment out of our control that,
  151. you know, kind of give us a good overview of
  152. what the situation looks like.
  153. Okay. And then last but not least in the strategy
  154. section it's all about, you know, uh, what do we
  155. want to accomplish?
  156. Right. Um, what are we trying to do in the
  157. next six months?
  158. 12 months.
  159. Right. So the green is this strategic overarching analysis, right?
  160. And strategy is long term stuff.
  161. Then we have the positioning, which I mentioned, and you
  162. can even break it down into this beautiful sentence they
  163. have here for the, you know, the specific target market.
  164. So we could say, like, for ladies 25 to 30
  165. um, the product, which is and you describe the product?
  166. Um, it's ideal for, um, those ladies to do this
  167. with it because bam, bam, bam, bam, bam!
  168. All the benefits that you've laid out with your product.
  169. If you have a hard time creating a positioning statement,
  170. you have a product that's likely to fail.
  171. So it's really important section that you can put this
  172. together. And so for your product that you come up
  173. with for the case study, right, you need to be
  174. able to put it into this, Um, to this this
  175. kind of sentence, right?
  176. Making sure you know who your target audience is making
  177. sure you have a good description of your product making
  178. sure that it is actually ideal because it has a
  179. good user application, and and it's gonna be highly benefit
  180. your target market.
  181. Okay, then this last section, right?
  182. Like I said, this is the tactical plan.
  183. Strategy is long term tactics are like how we get
  184. there, the step by step parts of the plan that
  185. are going to lead us to to achieving the strategy.
  186. Right. So you're gonna have to look at all the
  187. marketing tools, right?
  188. The product that you developed, what kind of price are
  189. we going to put it out and make sure with
  190. all of these seven ps of marketing really?
  191. Really. Make sure you hone in on strategy, right?
  192. Don't just put like Well, I think I'm gonna price
  193. it at this.
  194. Um, that's not enough, right?
  195. Are you gonna price it odd even.
  196. Are you going to price?
  197. It basically went through a whole bunch of different strategies,
  198. right? Is it a cost plus strategy?
  199. What kind of strategy?
  200. are you using with all these different marketing tools?
  201. Lastly, we haven't talked about this last one yet.
  202. And this is the important part of this chapter.
  203. Is the customer response assessment plan.
  204. So how are we going to know if we're doing
  205. a good job satisfying the needs, right?
  206. How are we going to track whether customers are sticking
  207. with us?
  208. How are we going to track whether or not customers
  209. are saying good things about us or, you know, are
  210. they Are they getting frustrated?
  211. Right. So all of that is part of the assessment.
  212. And that's why I just did one more slide on
  213. the assessment plan, right?
  214. So just completing a great marketing plan, that's not enough.
  215. Okay, once it's done, how did the market?
  216. How does the market even know if it worked?
  217. How do they know if it was successful?
  218. Because I guarantee you, even if you're the vice president
  219. of marketing or this chief marketing officer, you're going to
  220. have to justify your marketing plan.
  221. Marketing costs a lot of dollars, and nobody's going to
  222. give you that money unless you can justify that.
  223. It worked.
  224. Okay, so you've got to plant you got to put
  225. together a plan that gauges whether or not the plan
  226. works or if some kind of tweaks are needed along
  227. the way.
  228. And that's what we'll talk about these next couple sections.
  229. So let's take a look at the process of how
  230. we kind of develop analytics.
  231. So in the world of analytics, right, What we're looking
  232. for is collecting and using data, right?
  233. What are we doing with that data?
  234. You know, we're measuring the effectiveness of the of the
  235. plans that we put forth okay?
  236. And it's important to understand that, you know, with the
  237. data that we get do we put it to action,
  238. you know, do we do something with it?
  239. Because if we don't, then it's kind of worthless, you
  240. know? And this is where I always Todd's for a
  241. moment. And just make sure that students understand that to
  242. be in a marketing career does not necessarily mean that
  243. you're a creative type that you can draw that you
  244. can, you know, create awesome commercials or ads, right?
  245. This is like if you're a numbers person and but
  246. you still dig marketing.
  247. This is an awesome field is marketing analytics and is
  248. the fastest growing section as well.
  249. Like companies want more and more data.
  250. And that's you know why we're tracking our Internet usage
  251. and our social media usage and and so that's right,
  252. because these are the benefits, right?
  253. If marketing has the data, they'll know whether or not
  254. their marketing plan was effective.
  255. Did it work or did it not, um, it improves
  256. the marketing group's performance, right?
  257. It makes it so that if they have the right
  258. data, they know like, Well, based on what happened last
  259. time, it worked really well, or hey, we really have
  260. a lot of data on this customer.
  261. Target group Target customers.
  262. So we can actually we really know what we're doing
  263. instead of guessing, right?
  264. So that really, really helps If you don't have the
  265. data, marketers just risk, you know, doing things that aren't
  266. working. And, you know, or maybe they even quit things
  267. that are working.
  268. I've seen that happen a ton in marketing where you're
  269. actually killing it, but you're not sure if it's working.
  270. So you So you just say, you know, let's let's
  271. stop with that marketing program because, you know, we really
  272. don't know if it's working or not, right?
  273. You shouldn't have to guess.
  274. You should be able to look at the data and
  275. say, you know, with 95% certainty we are doing really
  276. well with this marketing plan are really poorly.
  277. And then, you know, like I said, then what you
  278. do with it after that is the important part.
  279. So just to cover a couple terms here, marketing analytics,
  280. um, this is where you're measuring and most importantly, analyzing
  281. the data that you get so that you can tweak
  282. your management your marketing performance, right?
  283. Can you maximize your return on investment your R o
  284. I. So that you can make the best amount of
  285. money with the least amount of cost on your marketing
  286. campaign, Right?
  287. Good. Marketing analytics says I put together this process, and
  288. based on this, we should get the best bang for
  289. our buck.
  290. You're going to do that by looking at metrics, right?
  291. Metrics are what the data is, right?
  292. The metrics are the data that says, you know Hey,
  293. here's the date here.
  294. The metrics that we need to look at to measure.
  295. Um did we meet?
  296. You know, a metric could be cost or spend a
  297. metric Could be views or reach.
  298. Or what are the metrics that we're looking at to
  299. determine whether or not, um, the analytics result in a
  300. successful program or or not So teams that that do
  301. a good job with putting together an analytics process.
  302. And I guarantee you there's a lot out there that
  303. just don't Okay, so So the teams that do it
  304. really well that they're good with their analytics process, they're
  305. able to really stay focused on achieving marketing objectives instead
  306. of just saying, you know, we've got this great plan
  307. where it's gonna go out there and try to do
  308. it. Teams with analytics processes are are constantly changing.
  309. They're constantly improving and their stay really focused on the
  310. end goal.
  311. Okay, they don't chase the squirrel every time something new
  312. comes along.
  313. They are also able to gain credibility with upper management,
  314. right, because they can prove that what they did is
  315. working or hey, it didn't work, but we know it.
  316. And now here's what we're gonna do in the future.
  317. And mostly what I love about this is constant improvement.
  318. If you have a good analytics process, you can always
  319. improve and constant improvement or continuous improvement is key.
  320. Whether it's you in your career or a job or
  321. a department or company, right?
  322. Those are all really, really important.
  323. Okay, I'm running out of time, so I'm gonna posit
  324. here and we'll finish off everything in volume to in
  325. a moment.
