00:00 - 00:03
Hi I am Brianna Dingle and um this is my
00:03 - 00:08
project for Educational Research where I will be reflecting on
00:08 - 00:11
my pre knowledge and my folks knowledge of research and
00:11 - 00:14
how I plan to use this in the future.
00:15 - 00:17
I first want to start off by saying that I
00:17 - 00:18
really enjoyed this course.
00:19 - 00:22
I thought it was very, very informative and I learned
00:22 - 00:26
so much about research that I previously did not know.
00:27 - 00:30
Um so first just giving an overview of exactly what
00:30 - 00:30
I'll be discussing.
00:31 - 00:33
First I will touch on my pre knowledge.
00:34 - 00:36
Then I'll talk about my post knowledge and how I
00:36 - 00:39
plan to use educational research in the future and in
00:40 - 00:40
my future classroom.
00:43 - 00:43
All right.
00:43 - 00:46
So first, the Pre knowledge, um I will talk about
00:47 - 00:49
um what my strategies were for searching the internet for
00:50 - 00:54
research, How I found credible sources and how I previously
00:54 - 00:57
summarized my findings before taking this course.
01:00 - 01:01
Are you still searching the internet?
01:02 - 01:04
So at first I thought research was as simple as
01:05 - 01:06
looking for the answer on the internet.
01:07 - 01:09
I believe that most meaningful answers could be found by
01:10 - 01:13
a quick search on google or any search engine.
01:13 - 01:17
And um throughout the the time of discourse, I've learned
01:17 - 01:21
that research is so far from just looking and answer
01:21 - 01:23
up and finding your own individual answer.
01:24 - 01:27
It's more about looking at what professionals have already said
01:28 - 01:32
and information that they've already gathered um for this particular
01:32 - 01:34
topic that you are trying to study.
01:36 - 01:39
Um I believe that research was about finding credible sources,
01:40 - 01:41
which I still believe to be true.
01:42 - 01:44
Um but I also believe that these sources could be
01:44 - 01:49
from any website or organization with a credible author, which
01:50 - 01:51
this is not necessarily true.
01:55 - 01:58
And lastly, I thought research involves summarize summarizing your findings
01:59 - 02:03
and research, which it does, but I specifically believe that
02:03 - 02:07
it didn't necessarily have a particular format besides giving credit
02:08 - 02:09
to the appropriate sources.
02:11 - 02:11
All right.
02:11 - 02:14
So now that we've touched on my pre knowledge, I
02:14 - 02:16
want to talk about what I now know as a
02:16 - 02:17
result of taking this course.
02:18 - 02:20
Um So I now know how to better use databases
02:21 - 02:21
for research.
02:22 - 02:26
I now know how to analyze qualitative data.
02:27 - 02:28
Um I now know how to write an article review
02:29 - 02:32
in a literature review to present my findings for a
02:32 - 02:33
specific topic.
02:35 - 02:37
So using databases for research.
02:38 - 02:43
So I previously had I had previous knowledge of how
02:43 - 02:46
to access and use databases for research um Throughout my
02:46 - 02:49
experience with undergrad and having to write different things for
02:49 - 02:50
my assignment stand.
02:51 - 02:53
Previously I used databases like J.
02:53 - 02:54
Store and Gail.
02:55 - 02:58
Um This course taught me which databases were helpful to
02:58 - 02:58
use for research.
02:59 - 03:01
Um Some of the ones that I had used an
03:01 - 03:03
undergrad, I realized that they were as efficient for finding
03:04 - 03:05
the information that I needed.
03:05 - 03:08
Um So I was able to find a thorough plethora
03:08 - 03:12
of useful research using google scholar and academic search databases.
03:13 - 03:16
These are the ones that I personally found most helpful
03:17 - 03:19
for me during this course and um I personally believe
03:20 - 03:22
that they will be very helpful if I had a
03:22 - 03:24
question that I needed to be answered in the future.
03:25 - 03:28
Um also learn how to evaluate and review sources for
03:28 - 03:30
research as a result of using the databases.
03:33 - 03:34
Um data analysis.
03:35 - 03:38
Previously I had no experience with digging deep into data.
03:38 - 03:41
Um this course definitely taught me how to find common
03:41 - 03:45
themes and categories and research by picking apart common words
03:45 - 03:45
and phrases.
03:46 - 03:49
So specifically, um in this course we had to analyze
03:49 - 03:53
qualitative data um so we had to look at interviews
03:53 - 03:57
or observations are different surveys and stuff that I was
03:57 - 03:57
able to see when I was.
03:58 - 04:01
Um throughout the duration of this course.
04:02 - 04:06
And um I definitely found um analyzing this data very
04:07 - 04:11
very very um It was a great learning experience and
04:11 - 04:13
it was very helpful because I now feel as if
04:13 - 04:16
I'm better equipped to look at research and make meaning
04:16 - 04:16
of it.
04:21 - 04:24
Um Next article reviews before this Of course I had
04:24 - 04:26
never written an article review nor did I even know
04:26 - 04:30
what an article review was, but I took so much
04:30 - 04:33
away from writing the article reviews, completing the article reviews
04:33 - 04:37
enhanced my knowledge of exactly what a research study was
04:37 - 04:38
and the components that it included.
04:39 - 04:42
So for example um what exactly should be an introduction,
04:43 - 04:45
participants, results, conclusions, literature review.
04:46 - 04:48
Um I never really had to look at a research
04:48 - 04:49
study for anything.
04:49 - 04:53
So completing that assignment helped me to realize exactly what
04:54 - 04:56
a research study was and what it should include.
04:57 - 04:59
It also helped me learn how to better locate and
04:59 - 05:02
evaluate sources, which is something I can use in my
05:02 - 05:02
future classrooms.
05:03 - 05:05
Um When I first had to do this first article,
05:06 - 05:08
a few assignment, I did find it kind of difficult
05:08 - 05:14
to locate um meaningful sources for the topic that we
05:14 - 05:15
had to answer.
05:16 - 05:19
But by by the end of that project I found
05:19 - 05:23
myself more comfortable with trying to locate and evaluate those
05:23 - 05:27
sources from the databases and lastly in the literature reviews.
05:28 - 05:32
So previously I was unaware that literature reviews provided insight
05:32 - 05:36
to what research is already on a topic, so it
05:36 - 05:39
tells you what's already out there, what people already know
05:39 - 05:41
about the specific topic that you're researching.
05:42 - 05:44
So right in the literature review in this course enabled
05:45 - 05:47
me to make connections between research, which is something that
05:48 - 05:49
I previously did not have to do.
05:50 - 05:52
Um And most importantly, I feel like this is um
05:53 - 05:55
one of my major things that I'll be taken away
05:55 - 05:58
from this course is that it taught me that it
05:58 - 06:01
is not all about summarizing the topic, but also adding
06:01 - 06:03
in your own perspectives and insights.
06:04 - 06:07
And so um I think that is something great that
06:07 - 06:09
I can take away from this course is that it's
06:09 - 06:13
not all about spitting out or regurgitating all of the
06:13 - 06:16
information that you're reading, but it's also about adding in
06:16 - 06:20
your own interpretations and your own perspectives and contributing to
06:20 - 06:21
the research yourself.
06:24 - 06:27
And so now not, I've taken this course, not that
06:27 - 06:30
I learn more about research and how to um implement
06:31 - 06:33
those strategies and methods, how will I use it in
06:33 - 06:33
the future?
06:34 - 06:37
So, educational research and research in general will be helpful
06:37 - 06:40
for me in the future, especially as an english teacher
06:41 - 06:43
taking this course has taught me how to dig deeper
06:43 - 06:46
into information and to look at it from different perspectives.
06:47 - 06:49
Um and like I said, it's also taught me that
06:50 - 06:52
it's okay to add in my own perspective, I can
06:53 - 06:55
use this new information to help my students as they
06:55 - 06:56
do future research.
06:56 - 06:59
I can also use my new research skills to research
07:00 - 07:03
best practices and strategies that can be useful in my
07:03 - 07:06
classroom. Um so like I said, I really enjoyed this
07:07 - 07:09
course. Um it was very informative and it was definitely
07:10 - 07:11
a great learning experience.
