00:01 - 00:05
hi advocacy issue projects. Um I just wanted to check in.
00:05 - 00:10
I've heard from quite a few of you um but wanted to chat some more with the
00:10 - 00:13
rest of you about the projects that you have
00:13 - 00:16
for the issue that you have been assigned.
00:16 - 00:19
And so first we're going to just go over
00:19 - 00:21
the three different things that you were doing.
00:21 - 00:23
So this semester you were doing the white paper,
00:24 - 00:28
the stakeholder meeting and a summary as well as in the social media campaign.
00:29 - 00:34
So the white paper is due this sunday october 31st by midnight.
00:34 - 00:38
Um so wanted to check in again, I've talked to many of you,
00:38 - 00:40
but for those of you that I haven't,
00:40 - 00:43
I wanted to make sure that you all are feeling confident with what you
00:44 - 00:48
okay? So let's dive a little bit further into the white paper.
00:48 - 00:53
So again, that's due on sunday by midnight.
00:53 - 00:59
And so I gave a lot of links and things about to what the white papers can look like,
00:59 - 01:00
what they are
01:01 - 01:04
and what the purpose of them is.
01:04 - 01:09
And so to reiterate your audience for this white paper is a legislator.
01:09 - 01:16
And so you are writing as succinctly as possible with backing up that all
01:16 - 01:21
of your evidence with citations um to really get a point across your point.
01:21 - 01:27
And so I would recommend Picking one Concern 1 area that you have with your topic.
01:28 - 01:30
Um so let's say you are the Children with
01:30 - 01:33
incarcerated parents topic and maybe you're concerned that you
01:33 - 01:37
choose to present to the legislature is about access
01:37 - 01:41
for Children during visitation or child friendly visiting rooms.
01:41 - 01:46
Um that could be like your one issue that you are presenting to them about what,
01:47 - 01:51
why they should be paying attention to this, backing this up with your research
01:51 - 01:56
and why they, you know what they could be doing to address this issue.
01:56 - 02:00
So maybe you have some examples from another state or some different
02:00 - 02:04
ideas of your own about how to make visits more friendly for Children
02:05 - 02:07
or maybe it is the school discipline issue.
02:07 - 02:09
And so you are choosing maybe the one
02:09 - 02:15
topic you're addressing maybe about out of school suspensions
02:15 - 02:20
and why that is a concern and the impact that that has on a child's education,
02:20 - 02:25
especially when it's used with elementary students or something like that.
02:25 - 02:28
And so that's the one issue you're addressing
02:28 - 02:32
and for the other one with the social emotional learning group.
02:32 - 02:36
Maybe your issue is you want to be looking at, how do we build
02:37 - 02:40
uh curriculums around empathy building with Children.
02:40 - 02:45
And that may be the issue that you choose or something along those lines and how,
02:45 - 02:47
how that can be done and implemented
02:47 - 02:50
and maybe there's different criteria or different
02:50 - 02:53
curriculum or different ways activities that can
02:53 - 02:56
be built into schools about how you
02:56 - 02:58
build that skill.
02:58 - 03:03
So that's what you're doing. I don't want you to present on the entire thing.
03:03 - 03:07
You're picking a narrower topic of how you would present this to your audience,
03:07 - 03:08
which is the legislator,
03:08 - 03:10
the style of this.
03:10 - 03:14
And so the style can be many different ways, white papers are again,
03:14 - 03:17
a very cyst inked writing style.
03:17 - 03:19
And so you want that, that could be,
03:20 - 03:22
you can do it in the style of a brochure.
03:22 - 03:27
So like a three page or like a bi tri fold brochure that you get at, you know,
03:27 - 03:29
different doctors offices.
03:29 - 03:29
And
03:29 - 03:31
I think uh you know,
03:31 - 03:35
tourist things that are in a brochure style where you have a cover page
03:35 - 03:37
on there and then you open it up and you've got your different,
03:37 - 03:38
you have a graphic,
03:38 - 03:46
maybe there's a graph or a chart that really makes sense for your issue or the uh
03:46 - 03:49
face of the curriculum or something like that,
03:49 - 03:53
that you want to include a picture and that's okay to include a picture into this.
03:53 - 03:58
Obviously we want to be mindful of space and I'm going to be paying attention though.
03:58 - 04:02
Does your picture take up the entire page? Because then that's a concern.
04:02 - 04:04
Your picture doesn't need to take up the entire page.
04:04 - 04:08
We still, and you can have bullet points in there, you can have paragraphs,
04:08 - 04:11
you can have lots of different things when you think about a brochure,
04:12 - 04:16
You can also choose to just do like a 1-2 page
04:17 - 04:19
uh paper for this.
04:19 - 04:22
However, it's single spaced, it's not double space,
04:22 - 04:26
it's not written out like a long narrative because you
04:26 - 04:28
have to think about your handing this to a legislator.
04:28 - 04:32
They want to look at it very quickly to be able to get that information
04:32 - 04:34
fast and they don't have to dig for
04:34 - 04:37
information or read long paragraphs about something.
04:37 - 04:40
Um And so but with your citations,
04:40 - 04:44
I would encourage using footnotes for your citations to save you space.
04:44 - 04:48
Um and you can make those citations at the
04:48 - 04:51
bottom of the brochure of the page really tiny,
04:51 - 04:54
you could do like six point font or something at the bottom,
04:54 - 04:56
The citations just need to be present.
04:56 - 04:58
Um but if you're going to use them,
04:58 - 05:01
make sure you have footnotes or they're in there correctly.
05:02 - 05:07
Um The last part about this is that you are supposed to be turning this into a
05:08 - 05:09
Legislature legislator.
05:09 - 05:12
And so that requires a little bit of research on
05:12 - 05:15
your end of what state legislators do we have,
05:15 - 05:22
that could be important for you to be in contact with regarding this issue and all
05:22 - 05:26
you have to do is have proof that you provided this to the to the legislator.
05:26 - 05:27
Whether that is
05:27 - 05:29
an email screenshot that you can send me,
05:29 - 05:34
I don't expect the legislator to respond to you if they do wonderful.
05:34 - 05:36
But I don't expect that they will.
05:36 - 05:40
And so I just want proof that you provided it to them all
05:40 - 05:45
of that information is public knowledge on the state web statehouse website,
05:45 - 05:48
so you can get all of their contact information from there.
05:50 - 05:53
Okay, so again, white papers due this weekend,
05:54 - 05:56
The next thing that you have coming up is
05:56 - 05:59
the stakeholder meeting in a three page summary.
05:59 - 06:02
So that stakeholder meeting um needs to be
06:02 - 06:05
completed with the summary by November 28,
06:05 - 06:10
and so again at midnight and the stakeholder, how to pick your stakeholder,
06:10 - 06:14
your stakeholder can be anybody who is connected to
06:14 - 06:16
your issue that you have chosen,
06:16 - 06:19
whether that is a teacher who has Children whose
06:19 - 06:22
had Children with incarcerated parents in their classroom,
06:22 - 06:25
someone who's had an incarcerated loved one, A police officer,
06:25 - 06:30
that could be a stakeholder for those of you doing SCL curriculums, that would be,
06:30 - 06:31
you know,
06:31 - 06:36
teachers would be great to try to contact or even parents who have had an
06:36 - 06:38
investment in how their Children have been
06:38 - 06:40
learning that type of curriculum in school,
06:40 - 06:40
maybe, you know,
06:40 - 06:43
someone whose child was severely bullied and
06:43 - 06:46
they may be a good resource stakeholder for
06:46 - 06:51
you about why is it important to have social emotional learning in school settings?
06:51 - 06:52
Um
06:52 - 06:57
you really with that one, you know, you can kind of pick anything school discipline.
06:57 - 07:00
Um Same thing as you know,
07:00 - 07:03
teachers obviously are going to be a great resource for you.
07:03 - 07:08
Um resource officers that are connected to schools, Principals administrators,
07:08 - 07:11
the secretaries who often are also
07:11 - 07:13
helping monitor those coming through discipline,
07:13 - 07:18
parents who had Children disciplined if you are going to choose
07:18 - 07:21
a child in any of these things to be talking to,
07:21 - 07:23
you have to have parent permission to do.
07:23 - 07:26
So I would definitely recommend staying away from that and really
07:26 - 07:29
trying to only talk to adults for any of these stakeholders,
07:30 - 07:33
but you're meeting should really be about how are they impacted?
07:33 - 07:37
How does the topic that you have been assigned impacted in their life
07:37 - 07:41
and what are pros and cons and things they've seen done really well,
07:41 - 07:46
what are things they've seen done really poorly and how what are their ideas and
07:46 - 07:49
then at the end you're going to be writing a three page academic paper.
07:49 - 07:54
So as three page summary that is going to be turned into me,
07:54 - 07:55
I'm the only one has to see it.
07:55 - 07:57
Your stakeholder does not have to see it.
07:57 - 08:01
Um but in that summary paper I want you to be including
08:01 - 08:04
not only your meeting and what you learned from this meeting,
08:04 - 08:08
but also any um I want you to bring in some coarse
08:08 - 08:12
material similar to what we just did with our concept check paper,
08:12 - 08:16
um but not as not as heavily focused on that,
08:16 - 08:19
but bringing in some different resources to say, oh yeah,
08:19 - 08:21
like this is a child development
08:21 - 08:26
um theory or something that I noted during this conversation with the stakeholder.
08:27 - 08:29
So again, that's due November 28.
08:29 - 08:32
All of these are going to be do via email to me
08:32 - 08:35
um so that that's how you're just going to turn them in,
08:35 - 08:38
you're not going to turn them in through blackboard.
08:39 - 08:45
Okay, the last thing, the social media campaign, this one is due December five.
08:45 - 08:48
So this is kind of your culmination of this entire project,
08:48 - 08:51
the audience for this is the general public,
08:51 - 08:54
that is your audience for social media campaign.
08:54 - 08:58
I want to reiterate, you do not have to actually
08:59 - 09:00
implement
09:00 - 09:02
this social media campaign.
09:02 - 09:04
I do not expect you to create a facebook or social
09:04 - 09:08
media or any form of social media tic Tac's the instagram,
09:08 - 09:09
anything like that.
09:09 - 09:15
You do not have to create it. All you have to do is design how you would implement it.
09:15 - 09:17
So your audience is the general public,
09:17 - 09:21
why is it important that the general public is invested in this
09:21 - 09:25
topic? Because it is that all of these things affect us globally,
09:25 - 09:26
your design.
09:26 - 09:27
I want to you know,
09:27 - 09:30
this is your chance to be really creative and
09:30 - 09:33
colorful and really bring in different design elements.
09:33 - 09:35
What how would you do this? Would you have
09:35 - 09:39
video part of this and what would that, what would be in the video?
09:39 - 09:46
Would you have different graphics or different, you know, would you include like
09:47 - 09:51
stickers that are really popular? Like the vinyl stickers?
09:51 - 09:55
Would you want, how would it be designed that you would get the word out?
09:55 - 09:57
Would there be a catch phrase or a hashtag or
09:57 - 10:01
something associated with this to get that word spread further?
10:01 - 10:02
Um
10:02 - 10:07
and so you I don't also expect you to be graphic designers,
10:07 - 10:10
you could draw it on a piece of paper and scan that
10:10 - 10:13
in about like what it would kind of look like for you,
10:13 - 10:15
what the colors would be, all of that kind of thing.
10:15 - 10:20
And then the last part is that business plan in quotes. It's not a real business plan.
10:20 - 10:24
Just type thinking about that in your brain, about how would you implement this?
10:24 - 10:26
How would you get this word out?
10:26 - 10:29
What are all of the steps and that's what's going to be turned in
10:29 - 10:32
is not only the design piece of it of what does this look like?
10:32 - 10:34
How can I visualize what you're doing?
10:34 - 10:37
But then what are the step by step things that you would
10:37 - 10:41
be doing for this social media campaign to get the word out?
10:41 - 10:43
Where would you be posting things?
10:43 - 10:46
How often would you be posting them, what time of day would be great.
10:46 - 10:49
Are there certain businesses or organizations in town
10:49 - 10:52
you would partner with to really get a blast
10:52 - 10:55
out there so that you can raise the consciousness
10:55 - 10:59
level about this issue to the general public.
10:59 - 11:06
So that is the culmination. Again, I don't do not expect you to actually
11:06 - 11:10
implement this and I just realized that social is missing the l.
11:10 - 11:13
At the end of the top of that. So sorry about that. But
11:13 - 11:17
I hope that this answers questions from those of you that
11:17 - 11:20
I have not heard from again many of the U.
11:20 - 11:26
I have spoken to about these different uh elements to your project.
11:26 - 11:30
So if there are any questions please reach out to me again.
11:30 - 11:33
The white paper is due this weekend.
11:33 - 11:34
Thank you.
