  1. good afternoon. So for the Learning Literacy Exhibition,
  2. I can do
  3. a video instead of actually recording, um, my posters and made out
  4. because I don't tend to actually it off or paper to do it with.
  5. So
  6. what we're gonna do is look at
  7. my businesses class that I teach within the school I work in
  8. and how I learn. I use my, um, digital literacy.
  9. Focus on on digital literacy Overall,
  10. no
  11. First slide, Says says
  12. Research
  13. Group is a class of 30 students,
  14. and they all range from school year 10 to year 11,
  15. and
  16. they can choose businesses on a one year course or two year course.
  17. It's down to whatever they choose.
  18. Typical lesson consists of teacher discussions followed by a
  19. port project.
  20. The lesson is based around an assessment. Then we have. We just It's more of,
  21. um,
  22. I delegate to the class What they gotta do.
  23. They mark their work and they should know they got assignments due.
  24. They crack on with it during the lesson,
  25. rather than being in the home and losing time, because due to the area we work in,
  26. there's quite a lot of poverty.
  27. So not every student is able to
  28. access Internet or a means of, um, computer work at home.
  29. And,
  30. yeah, overall,
  31. it can be quite hard for them to get the work done.
  32. But a major concern
  33. is that the learners has been on the phone communicating via text
  34. and some kind of social media app. So whether it's Snapchat,
  35. um, Tiktok
  36. Instagram,
  37. whatever doing these kids seem to be on the phones quite a lot as you can imagine,
  38. but within teaching, I find that learners prefer watching videos
  39. on YouTube
  40. and discuss what was learned and apply it to a case study.
  41. In general,
  42. I feel the majority of the learners lack of motivation
  43. with TAS and have a lot of reason involved.
  44. But most will be able to sit and read articles
  45. based on, um,
  46. for
  47. team, for example,
  48. or
  49. a celebrity
  50. or influencer.
  51. You know, they can sit. They can sit there on the phone, keeps
  52. grow, score scroll,
  53. and I read paragraph after paragraph to paragraph,
  54. find out the information or gossip
  55. and tea, as you say
  56. about certain celebrities.
  57. So these skills these learners actually are using
  58. no, they they use literacy in everyday life, and they just don't realise it.
  59. They said All these different applications you have,
  60. you know,
  61. they unknowingly
  62. using these skills.
  63. So when,
  64. like
  65. writing and read and I've been
  66. involved in the lessons
  67. and I get a response like I
  68. can be both with this, Do we have to do it?
  69. I'll say This is boring. I don't want to do this anymore. Can we do something else?
  70. Can be Minecraft.
  71. Can we do something else
  72. better than necessarily play games
  73. know because
  74. the contained skills that the learners of
  75. subconscious use with their family and friends.
  76. So furthermore, it was soon apparent
  77. after investigation,
  78. the students participate within a whole array of multi mode activities,
  79. subconsciously,
  80. as we all do,
  81. so as a newly appointed teacher of business, I t.
  82. Um,
  83. I took up in November last year.
  84. I am mindful of building a sufficient level of rapport with all my learners
  85. and a satellite to ensure active role within mentor and fellow students.
  86. These views are similar to those of petty, who claimed
  87. that unless report is established,
  88. a physiological a psychological barrier is created
  89. that stops taking part in discussions,
  90. asking questions or asking for help is eventually results in the learners,
  91. feeling isolated within the classroom and then achieving.
  92. Overall, I believe I have a
  93. rather good report with my learners know they'll pop in.
  94. If I'm free in the morning, whatever they pop in and speak to me, say like I'm doing
  95. um,
  96. saying back to them.
  97. They know that if they need to talk to me, they can. They can approach.
  98. I'm very approachable
  99. and easy to talk to,
  100. which goes a long way, especially with teenagers, who are,
  101. I said, struggling at home with poverty and
  102. other situations.
  103. They need it. They need attention sometimes.
  104. So my main challenge.
  105. So initially, the challenge is that students find written tasks,
  106. assessments and Google slides
  107. to be boring and repetitive.
  108. Within the end, Academic year approaching and the business finance reset,
  109. Exam approaching
  110. is critical for the benefit of the learners
  111. to find alternative methods to ensure sufficient amount of revision is completed.
  112. So through the revision process,
  113. students will use applications and websites such as
  114. learning, which I'll go through in a minute with you,
  115. um,
  116. and videos and two teachers neo
  117. teacher made
  118. and and it always will help them
  119. get further
  120. with the the
  121. the revision
  122. so they can make their own resources.
  123. They can play making their own quiz and test their friends and John.
  124. So, as John
  125. State State, John Dewey states,
  126. we learn by doing
  127. so, if again, learners actively involved in the revision process.
  128. I would like to think that they are approaching as learners are more likely,
  129. and they're appropriate,
  130. as learners are more likely to remember what they think or relate,
  131. rather than reading from a book or slide show.
  132. So,
  133. you know, it's quite boring looking through a book all the time
  134. and
  135. constantly
  136. so read it, read from my book, gets a bit boring. They lose motivation.
  137. I well, that's why I find Overall,
  138. um,
  139. it's not as fun as sitting there watching a six minute video,
  140. because six minutes is long enough to keep them
  141. and they're snappy. It's full of information,
  142. and usually they are. If you get an updated video,
  143. it's more apparent to them. It's more
  144. example,
  145. and I'm going to show a video that's been based on,
  146. um, Love film, which was around,
  147. I
  148. say, 10 years ago,
  149. when most
  150. about four, about 15 16,
  151. so they were 56 at a time
  152. where, as now we have Netflix. So I changed the film for Netflix, making it more
  153. modernised more,
  154. um, current,
  155. the current trends and that type of stuff.
  156. So let's go back to my evaluation.
  157. Oh,
  158. as Jeff Pettier stated,
  159. students are more much more likely to be committed and interested in their work
  160. when they feel a sense of ownership and are more likely to become active learners
  161. during the activity.
  162. The above quote had become obvious when looking through past exam results.
  163. Compared to the effort the learners are putting
  164. in division during vision sessions during the lesson.
  165. So watching the learners go through Seneca
  166. and playing the Hoop games,
  167. I'm a little bit of fun testing their friends,
  168. writing down on notes. These are their tactics that I find
  169. works really well with them
  170. and explains it overall better. It's only so much.
  171. It's only so long that they can sit there and listen to me to me talk about
  172. certain things, and it gives my my voice a break. I can observe the lesson,
  173. see where everyone's working
  174. and
  175. it it all makes sense.
  176. So that's my valuation.
  177. My references are here with Jeff petty.
  178. I do like a pedagogy focus as well
  179. and
  180. do is there.
  181. So my next section I'm gonna look at
  182. turn on
  183. and I share my screen with you to have a look at what other things we've done.
  184. First of all, before we do that,
  185. you know,
  186. it's better.
  187. So I've made
  188. these lovely,
  189. um,
  190. screen, not screens. There is a piece of paper
  191. where
  192. it shows, um title what? Looking at definition.
  193. Usually they are bright coloured ones. But I had
  194. I lost my co one somewhere,
  195. but I've got my back and my copies as well
  196. to explain to them what they have, what they're looking at to help help with vision.
  197. Tells them, for example, finance. Now,
  198. um,
  199. tell the certain formulas or the calculation they
  200. they need to use example fixed cost.
  201. What is a fixed cost was a variable variable cost
  202. the cost that rises, output raise as output rises.
  203. There's all these other things that Oh, yes, it's not. Be quick. Easy.
  204. It's easy to read. It's not a massive paragraph of reading
  205. that they would have in a book.
  206. So I'm gonna show you share my screen with you.
  207. First of all.
  208. We're gonna go on
  209. here
  210. just green,
  211. so I wouldn't do
  212. show my booklet, first of all, so
  213. it started off showing
  214. this booklet. I scanned it,
  215. and it's also do with promoting a brand, for example.
  216. And it was
  217. It's all helped with assignments and their exams. They read through it.
  218. It's a
  219. child friend is in a friendly book
  220. that explains everything that they need.
  221. However,
  222. like you say, there's a lot of reading and they don't really like reading much.
  223. So that's one way that they help revise. If they want to sit there and
  224. do it that way, I'm more than happy for them to do it.
  225. The next one we're gonna look at
  226. is about
  227. learning, and these are websites that we've used within the lessons
  228. they have on the Google classrooms as well,
  229. and it works a lot more better,
  230. so we share screen
  231. and we'll go
  232. at
  233. Seneca.
  234. So
  235. then
  236. it's a lovely, lovely thing
  237. I
  238. can see in my lane,
  239. so it shows basically
  240. everything that they need to look at,
  241. so we'll have a type of
  242. structures. They'll click through,
  243. explains why each one is click through
  244. and they know they've done that, the screen at the top.
  245. They can scroll to the next one to continue
  246. next one. Then he comes up with,
  247. um, little quizzes or little games to the test,
  248. to read through what they need to look at,
  249. and they'll put in the answer.
  250. And if it's wrong
  251. or correct, they'll protect the name.
  252. Next one. They have
  253. games,
  254. so it's a It's a very good, um, piece of kit to use.
  255. They have exam prep on. There
  256. they have.
  257. Um,
  258. Everything you look at is on the left hand
  259. side of the different court modules and all the,
  260. um, courses.
  261. Wrong answers there.
  262. So that's my cynical learning.
  263. And then we will go to
  264. this one. Now is gonna be cahoot
  265. and
  266. cos
  267. one of these things that
  268. you can use You can make easy.
  269. You don't need to be a rocket science
  270. scientists to make a cahoot, um, quiz simple things to do.
  271. If it's things that you and your friends are stuck on,
  272. you can create a quiz
  273. and test yourselves.
  274. There's loads on there.
  275. There's even premade quizzes on there, like I I use been using by here.
  276. So that's
  277. the cahoot and then another one that we I like using
  278. is called two teachers, and they are
  279. two teachers, business studies who have made
  280. blogs and resources and knowledge hubs
  281. for other teachers to use
  282. and their current trends.
  283. And it's like as our customer needs established local, loyal customers.
  284. We look, we look at a lot of videos. There's a lot of resources on there,
  285. and all the learners know about this as well.
  286. So
  287. there's loads of things that they they can look at,
  288. and it's very current. It's very popular.
  289. It's easy to understand
  290. you give me access to back on their phones as well. Then you download the
  291. app they download the Seneca APP teacher made. They can make their own, um,
  292. notes, test their friends. You can do that on
  293. as well. Make a lot of notes, a little flash cards.
  294. So
  295. that is my
  296. learning Literacy exhibition completed.
  297. I've been through
  298. my challenge, has shown some
  299. posters and display boards. I I can I maybe make,
  300. um,
  301. different me social media used.
  302. Then that's it.
  303. Thank you very much.
