00:00 - 00:04
Okay, Part two of Chapter five, less than one.
00:05 - 00:06
And when I get to the end, we'll talk about
00:06 - 00:07
the assignment.
00:07 - 00:10
But what we're talking about is bullying.
00:11 - 00:14
Now we're going to shift into cyber bullying, cyber bullying
00:15 - 00:16
and how that relates to what we're talking about.
00:17 - 00:21
Okay, first of all, here's a definition willing via email,
00:22 - 00:24
text, instant messaging and social media sites.
00:26 - 00:28
I'm gonna get to a little bit of this when
00:28 - 00:29
we get into the parts of the lesson.
00:30 - 00:32
But, you know, I never had to deal with this
00:32 - 00:33
growing up.
00:33 - 00:37
So this has become a recent phenomenon.
00:37 - 00:41
Last, you know, maybe 15, 20 years where it's been
00:41 - 00:42
on the increase.
00:43 - 00:45
But we're going to talk about what it is and
00:46 - 00:52
why. It's tough to deal with by Cyber Bowl in
00:52 - 00:53
different, well, 24 7.
00:55 - 00:57
You can reach the victim when she is alone.
00:58 - 00:59
It can happen at any time, day or night.
01:01 - 01:02
And here's the deal.
01:02 - 01:05
You guys know many your peers instead of sleeping and
01:06 - 01:06
get ready for school.
01:06 - 01:10
You're on social media two o'clock in the morning on
01:10 - 01:10
a school night.
01:11 - 01:16
Um, this stuff can happen anytime that somebody can pose
01:16 - 01:20
something spreading spreading rumors and lies about you.
01:20 - 01:27
Gossip, um, make threats over some kind of messaging service.
01:28 - 01:32
So all of this is, um, something that could happen
01:32 - 01:33
in time of the night.
01:33 - 01:37
You wake up and suddenly there's messages, uh, information on
01:37 - 01:39
your phone that you've had been bullied while you were
01:39 - 01:45
sleeping. So it's it's, uh it happens 24 7 in
01:45 - 01:46
this day and age, not just when you're at school.
01:48 - 01:56
The other thing is it's hard to secure it, keep
01:56 - 02:01
it contained because and hard to trace the source of
02:01 - 02:03
where it's come from because it can be distributed so
02:04 - 02:07
quickly. You know, in my day if, if I was
02:07 - 02:12
gonna use social bullying and try to exclude somebody and
02:12 - 02:14
spread rumors about him, um, I might be able to
02:14 - 02:15
talk to a small group of people at the time,
02:16 - 02:17
called somebody on the phone.
02:18 - 02:21
But now, if I got a social media page with
02:21 - 02:27
1000 friends or followers, boom instantly, I've reached 1000 people.
02:27 - 02:30
And then if they share it, we got to multiply
02:31 - 02:35
that by however many people shared it, and it's exponential.
02:36 - 02:40
So thousands of people are being reached instantly with this,
02:41 - 02:42
uh, with this message.
02:43 - 02:45
Whatever this messages, that's a boiling type message.
02:46 - 02:52
And then it's hard to delete it because it's been
02:53 - 02:53
posted. It's been shared.
02:54 - 02:54
It's been sent.
02:54 - 02:56
People have taken screenshots.
02:57 - 02:59
So even if you get a hold of the person,
02:59 - 03:01
you say, Hey, look, let's let's be friends again.
03:02 - 03:03
Let's not do this.
03:03 - 03:06
Let's take this down and say, OK, I'll delete it.
03:06 - 03:07
It's too late.
03:07 - 03:07
It's out there.
03:08 - 03:12
I know by the way, it's permanent, Um, and somebody's
03:12 - 03:14
still looking at it on their screen, even after the
03:15 - 03:16
person that Senate deletes it.
03:17 - 03:18
So it's tough.
03:18 - 03:19
It's a tough thing to deal with.
03:20 - 03:21
So how do we deal with?
03:21 - 03:22
Let's talk about some ways you might deal with that.
03:23 - 03:26
First of all, be careful what you post remember.
03:26 - 03:30
Everything is actually permanent, and you said, No, it's not.
03:30 - 03:31
I can delete it.
03:31 - 03:34
Well, first of all, the FBI and law enforcement enforcement
03:34 - 03:36
agencies can always pull it back up, even after it's
03:36 - 03:36
been deleted.
03:37 - 03:38
Is permanently there.
03:39 - 03:43
Um, second of all, what if somebody has, you know,
03:43 - 03:46
taking a screenshot of it somehow saved it to their
03:46 - 03:48
computer? It's there now.
03:48 - 03:52
It can be shared through another social media source as
03:53 - 03:53
a photo.
03:54 - 03:57
So everything you do that you post on the Internet,
03:57 - 04:01
you have to consider email, text, social media tag, video,
04:03 - 04:05
anything its program.
04:06 - 04:07
It's gonna be there forever.
04:08 - 04:11
So I understand that before you post it don't post
04:12 - 04:13
message or photos that will hurt embarrassing anyone.
04:14 - 04:14
Think of your reputation.
04:16 - 04:18
Um, keep your password to yourself.
04:18 - 04:19
Keep a secret.
04:20 - 04:22
Think about who else sees your online post a complete
04:22 - 04:23
stranger. See it.
04:23 - 04:24
Only your friends do.
04:24 - 04:25
Friends of your friends get to see those.
04:26 - 04:27
How do you set the privacy?
04:28 - 04:31
Um, settings and keep your parents in the loop.
04:32 - 04:34
I recommend that your parents have access to your social
04:35 - 04:39
media sites, the ones that you're involved in and have
04:39 - 04:39
access to your account.
04:40 - 04:42
You know, a bunch of kids here in class yelled
04:42 - 04:42
at me.
04:42 - 04:43
No way, No way.
04:43 - 04:46
Well, then, are you posting inappropriate stuff?
04:47 - 04:49
Yeah, you get in trouble for your parents.
04:49 - 04:51
Saw it that you'd be embarrassed about if your parents
04:51 - 04:51
saw it.
04:52 - 04:55
Maybe that tells you something, So I recommend that you
04:55 - 04:58
allow your parents access so they can monitor what's going
04:58 - 05:00
on so they can protect you.
05:00 - 05:03
I can help protect you now when you're a full
05:03 - 05:05
grown adult and the emotional intelligence was where it needs
05:05 - 05:05
to be.
05:07 - 05:08
Okay, I got it.
05:08 - 05:10
Then. You might not want to have your parents on
05:11 - 05:13
your social media sites, but for right now, that is
05:13 - 05:16
my recommendation firm recommendation for everybody.
05:18 - 05:19
I just remember.
05:19 - 05:20
Like I said, things are permanent.
05:20 - 05:22
The other thing is, don't post.
05:22 - 05:23
Things are going to embarrass you.
05:23 - 05:27
Never send an angry message or an angry text or
05:28 - 05:30
an angry email what I've had to do in the
05:30 - 05:33
past. Sometimes I'll type out of response, then read it
05:35 - 05:38
and I'll just delete it and not saying anything, because
05:38 - 05:42
I know that, um, I'm not going to come across
05:42 - 05:44
the way I want to and remember that it's impossible
05:45 - 05:47
for somebody on the other end to understand the context
05:48 - 05:51
and the tone of your voice and your body posture
05:52 - 05:54
and facial expression When you they're just looking at letters
05:54 - 05:56
on the screen there, looking at some words on the
05:56 - 05:58
screen, you capitalize it.
05:58 - 05:59
So you're yelling or excited.
05:59 - 06:01
Okay, other than that and so we said we use
06:02 - 06:03
emojis. Okay, got it.
06:04 - 06:09
It only helps to a certain extent, So we can't
06:09 - 06:10
We don't know context.
06:10 - 06:13
We don't know, uh, the inflection in your voice when
06:14 - 06:15
you're thinking, saying those things.
06:16 - 06:18
So if you just type in something out sending it
06:19 - 06:20
can be taken the wrong way.
06:20 - 06:21
Somebody told me the other day.
06:21 - 06:23
Well, when I make fun of my friends online, I'm
06:23 - 06:24
not doing them just we're just kidding around.
06:24 - 06:26
Yeah, but if I'm a third party, I don't know.
06:27 - 06:27
You're kidding around.
06:28 - 06:29
Am I supposed to know You're kidding around.
06:29 - 06:30
I don't hear the laughter.
06:31 - 06:33
Um, just because you stick an l o l at
06:33 - 06:35
the end of the text or the message doesn't mean
06:36 - 06:37
that I know that you're actually kidding.
06:38 - 06:42
Um, so just remember that, and I tell a couple
06:42 - 06:49
stories, um, one is, for example, that please be careful
06:49 - 06:51
about scantily clad pictures of yourself.
06:53 - 06:54
Pictures of yourself exposed.
06:55 - 06:58
Um, because you can't stop it once it gets started.
06:59 - 07:02
I can tell you a story that I once was
07:02 - 07:04
involved. Where a kid took a picture of another kid
07:04 - 07:06
while he was sitting on a toilet.
07:07 - 07:09
Now in the picture, you know, nothing with exposed or
07:09 - 07:13
seen, but because that kid was on the toilet when
07:13 - 07:15
that other kid took the picture and that other kids
07:15 - 07:16
shared it with some people.
07:17 - 07:18
The kid that took the picture was at the sheriff's
07:18 - 07:22
office and like like that, um, for potential child pornography,
07:23 - 07:24
because that's what it is.
07:25 - 07:29
And so you be very careful to never, ever allow
07:30 - 07:33
somebody take a picture of you and send it to
07:33 - 07:36
a social media site or share it on social media
07:36 - 07:37
side or send it in a text message.
07:38 - 07:40
And definitely don't take a picture of yourself and do
07:40 - 07:42
that because you don't know where it's going to end
07:43 - 07:45
up and you're setting yourself up for a potential blackmail,
07:46 - 07:46
so to speak.
07:47 - 07:50
If somebody has pictures of you in a compromised position,
07:52 - 07:53
so think about that.
07:53 - 07:54
The other thing I'll tell you is this, that I'm
07:54 - 07:58
a father of $4 and so you can know for
07:59 - 08:02
sure that I've stalked some dudes on social media when
08:02 - 08:03
they start trying to date my daughter, I would stop
08:04 - 08:06
them and I can use my second oldest daughter.
08:07 - 08:08
I'll tell you that one time I came up to
08:08 - 08:09
her and I showed her some pictures.
08:10 - 08:12
I said, This is a guy that you don't want
08:12 - 08:12
anything to do with.
08:13 - 08:14
Look at these pictures.
08:15 - 08:17
Get this guy as far away from you as possible.
08:18 - 08:20
And I would hope other parents are doing the same
08:20 - 08:25
thing for their kids that they're looking into social media
08:26 - 08:30
sites of the people that you befriend or that you
08:30 - 08:31
date. So here's the deal.
08:32 - 08:33
Think about that for yourself.
08:33 - 08:35
What do you want people to know about?
08:35 - 08:40
You post that on social media, Not things that are
08:40 - 08:40
going to be inappropriate.
08:41 - 08:41
That hurt your reputation.
08:42 - 08:44
And you can tell me I don't care.
08:44 - 08:44
I don't care.
08:45 - 08:46
What about my reputation?
08:46 - 08:47
Come on.
08:48 - 08:52
Okay. Last thing I'll tell you is, uh, employers are
08:52 - 08:53
gonna look at that stuff.
08:53 - 08:53
Potential employers.
08:55 - 08:59
And I knew when I was professor at Professor Military
08:59 - 09:00
Science at Northwestern State University.
09:01 - 09:04
Has student from these very high school high school come
09:04 - 09:06
up there for a scholarship board myself?
09:07 - 09:09
I saw a major professor from, and it's you to
09:10 - 09:12
my other staff members sitting on the sports, sitting behind
09:12 - 09:12
the table.
09:12 - 09:13
He's in front of the table.
09:13 - 09:15
We're asking questions on the last one to ask questions.
09:16 - 09:18
And I said, Dan, why is it that when I
09:18 - 09:21
go to your most social media sites, I see that
09:21 - 09:29
you're making derogatory and sexually inappropriate comments about women, about
09:30 - 09:32
friends, about people you don't like.
09:34 - 09:37
All of your social media sites Explain this to me.
09:37 - 09:39
And tell me, is that the kind of person I
09:39 - 09:43
would want in my program and my ROTC commissioning program?
09:45 - 09:49
And his eyes got about this big and he really
09:50 - 09:51
struggled to kind of explain himself.
09:53 - 09:55
Hey, I wanna check out of social media sites, your
09:55 - 09:57
potential employers, potential scholarship committees.
09:59 - 10:00
They don't do that.
10:01 - 10:04
So just think about it in terms of what you
10:04 - 10:04
post online.
10:06 - 10:09
And if you're a bully, then you're gonna have some
10:09 - 10:09
big problems.
10:11 - 10:18
Okay, so think about why you think MHM Research says
10:18 - 10:20
that Ladies do this more than the guys.
10:22 - 10:23
Why do you think that might be true?
10:23 - 10:26
Second thing is, it says that bullying is more common
10:26 - 10:27
than Cyber Bowl, and I don't know if I entirely
10:28 - 10:28
believe that.
10:28 - 10:29
I guess that's what the research says.
10:30 - 10:35
But to me, cyber bullying has become so prevalent I
10:35 - 10:35
would think you'd be close.
10:36 - 10:39
If not, cyberbullying would happen more often than bullying most
10:39 - 10:39
of your bullies.
10:39 - 10:42
Now they resort to bullying in face, and then they
10:42 - 10:43
are also a bully online.
10:44 - 10:48
They do kind of a combination thing, but why females
10:48 - 10:49
More than males?
10:50 - 10:54
Some of it has to do with gender communication, um,
10:55 - 10:57
preferences, because we're wired a little bit differently.
10:58 - 11:03
And so women tend to avoid the direct confrontation in
11:03 - 11:04
terms of discussion.
11:06 - 11:08
They like to do the subtle, more around the end,
11:09 - 11:12
um, confrontation.
11:13 - 11:15
And so that might be some some of why they
11:15 - 11:20
go online instead of face to face with the individual
11:21 - 11:22
that they're trying to pick on.
11:23 - 11:27
Um, but just think about why that might be and
11:28 - 11:29
look into your text and see what see what you
11:30 - 11:30
think about that.
11:31 - 11:34
And then what I want you to do is there's
11:34 - 11:35
a little exercise for you.
11:36 - 11:38
Let's match up our values with with ways that we
11:39 - 11:39
can deal with.
11:40 - 11:41
In other words, give you an example on here.
11:41 - 11:44
So if you stick up for your friend who's being
11:44 - 11:46
bullied, that's demonstrating personal courage.
11:46 - 11:46
It certainly is.
11:47 - 11:50
It's also demonstrated loyalty and self service because you put
11:50 - 11:52
yourself at risk, uh, to help your friend out.
11:53 - 11:58
Um, so what works should the Army values and just
11:58 - 11:58
kind of decide.
11:59 - 12:02
Hey, how does this relate to me trying to stop
12:03 - 12:03
or prevent balloon?
12:05 - 12:07
And then after you do that, I want you to
12:07 - 12:10
do exercise three, which is going to be your assignment
12:11 - 12:12
that you're gonna submit to me.
12:12 - 12:14
So for exercise three, you've got four scenarios.
12:15 - 12:17
Read those four scenarios and then pick one pick one.
12:18 - 12:20
And what you're gonna do is read through that scenario,
12:20 - 12:22
and then you're going to do on the performance assessment
12:23 - 12:26
task. You're gonna talk about how you would deal with
12:26 - 12:30
bowling bowling in that situation to stop it or prevent
12:30 - 12:35
it. So pick one of those four and then what
12:36 - 12:38
you'll do is on the performance assessment task.
12:39 - 12:40
You're going to discuss it?
12:41 - 12:43
How how you would deal with it.
12:43 - 12:44
How would you prevent it or stop it?
12:46 - 12:48
So there's a performance assessment task that you don't submit
12:48 - 12:51
it. You should be able to put this in the
12:51 - 12:53
comments section, notice what I've done.
12:53 - 12:55
Therefore, as I wrote scenario to just as an example,
12:56 - 12:57
So you don't have to repeat the scenario.
12:58 - 13:00
You just tell me Hey, I did scenario one or
13:01 - 13:03
I did scenario to just by listening the scenario right
13:03 - 13:06
there and then underneath of that, put your comments and
13:06 - 13:07
then make sure you get all your meds.
13:08 - 13:10
Make sure you hit on the meds because you should
13:10 - 13:14
meet those requirements when you write this thing out, if
13:15 - 13:17
you need additional document and do it on a separate
13:17 - 13:20
document. But I need you to submit both that document
13:20 - 13:24
as well as the performance assessment test document with the
13:24 - 13:25
Mets. Um, selected.
13:27 - 13:29
And then you're gonna put it in your cadet portfolio.
13:31 - 13:32
Some of you guys aren't putting things in the right
