00:01 - 00:06
Hi guys, I'm Brittany Willis and this is the negative impacts of social media.
00:07 - 00:10
First thing I want to start with is distraction.
00:11 - 00:15
So social media can be very distracting because many of us have
00:15 - 00:20
various forms of social media on our phones such as facebook or instagram
00:21 - 00:26
YouTube, Tiktok Snapchat. Um there's a lot of different platforms.
00:26 - 00:29
At least 78% of Americans have at least one
00:29 - 00:33
platform that they check on a consistent basis.
00:33 - 00:36
And that survey was taken in 2016.
00:37 - 00:41
And what platforms that we hold on our phones or on our tablets.
00:41 - 00:46
This increases the need for attention that we give our phones on a daily basis.
00:47 - 00:48
As
00:49 - 00:51
most companies have digital creators
00:53 - 00:58
that are used to um they're basically competing with your time via algorithms.
00:58 - 01:02
These algorithms are essentially judging the user's decision making.
01:02 - 01:03
So it's just um,
01:03 - 01:06
judging what you've looked at and interacted
01:06 - 01:10
with whether it's liking or watching videos or
01:11 - 01:12
stuff that you've clicked on.
01:12 - 01:17
They can actually see how long you've viewed even certain post pictures, videos,
01:17 - 01:18
commented.
01:19 - 01:23
And they use these to create algorithm algorithms which is essentially
01:23 - 01:27
um lining up posts that are relevant based on
01:27 - 01:30
stuff that you've interacted with in the past.
01:30 - 01:35
And these digital creators will actually keep sending you notifications.
01:35 - 01:38
That's essentially saying come back to our, you know,
01:38 - 01:41
platform and view some more because we think that
01:41 - 01:44
we would like what we've set up on your algorithm
01:51 - 01:53
the more time you give your phone,
01:53 - 01:56
obviously this is gonna go hand in hand with addiction.
01:56 - 01:57
Um
01:58 - 02:00
many people don't realize that they can be
02:00 - 02:03
addicted to social media because it seems like a
02:03 - 02:04
rather, you know,
02:04 - 02:08
silly or innocent thing um or not that big of a deal because
02:08 - 02:12
a lot of people have the content on their phone as well,
02:12 - 02:17
um but that addiction is hard to escape and it seems like
02:17 - 02:20
the more people are posting and the more we're looking for
02:21 - 02:25
likes and um comments and just various
02:25 - 02:28
interaction on these posts that we're making,
02:28 - 02:29
it's,
02:29 - 02:31
it's almost like people are constantly searching
02:31 - 02:34
for self validation through these platforms,
02:34 - 02:36
which is can be very scary.
02:37 - 02:38
Um the impacts of addiction,
02:39 - 02:41
so I really liked this photo, as you can see,
02:41 - 02:45
it's a family sitting around a dinner table and all of them,
02:45 - 02:49
all of them are looking at, you know, either a cell phone or tablet,
02:49 - 02:51
and this is directly hindering
02:52 - 02:57
and the relationships that they have within each other because they're not using,
02:57 - 02:58
you know,
02:58 - 02:59
this time to converse about their day or
02:59 - 03:02
about exciting milestones that might be happening,
03:02 - 03:04
they're just preoccupied with
03:06 - 03:11
other things that are in front of them and it kind of seems insignificant, you know,
03:11 - 03:14
because you only get a little bit of time with each other,
03:14 - 03:21
um so it really is just um kind of alarming, you know, that they're not talking and,
03:21 - 03:23
and I know a lot of people can think that
03:23 - 03:27
um social media is a great way to just like
03:27 - 03:30
free your mind or sit and scroll and it's like,
03:30 - 03:31
just
03:32 - 03:33
let the worries of the day go.
03:33 - 03:36
But ultimately this is going to impact the relationships that
03:36 - 03:39
they have with with each other because they're not,
03:39 - 03:40
you know, conversing,
03:40 - 03:45
like maybe they should be at the end of the day and this is actually going to create,
03:45 - 03:47
you know, kind of a domino effect
03:47 - 03:49
when our personal relationships in our life,
03:49 - 03:52
especially the ones that we have with the people we
03:52 - 03:54
live with and I'm assuming based off of a photo.
03:54 - 03:58
But um when these relationships are impacted,
03:58 - 04:02
that's gonna create some isolation because we're gonna
04:02 - 04:04
not feel the need to have these relationships,
04:04 - 04:09
not, not the relationships, but not um feel the need to have, you know,
04:09 - 04:11
certain human interaction.
04:11 - 04:16
And when human interaction decreases isolation obviously increases
04:16 - 04:19
the more time we spend on our phone and give, you know,
04:19 - 04:22
our phones or social media our free time and this is
04:22 - 04:26
essentially going to decrease the physical activity because we're not,
04:26 - 04:30
you know, setting down that phone and saying, I have five minutes of free time,
04:30 - 04:32
I'm going to go on a walk or I'm gonna go on a run or
04:33 - 04:37
Do a quick workout, even, you know, five minutes, 30 minutes, whatever it is.
04:37 - 04:40
A lot of times people are gonna try and
04:40 - 04:42
decompress by just scrolling and scrolling and scrolling,
04:42 - 04:43
which is actually just
04:44 - 04:46
you know, not doing much. Um
04:47 - 04:53
and this is going to domino into poor performance. So when you're continuously
04:53 - 04:56
scrolling and not using that time productively,
04:57 - 05:02
that's going to hinder, you know, your performance in work or in school or
05:03 - 05:06
because you're not dedicating, you know, the time that you need to do these things
05:10 - 05:15
and this goes into um unrealistic expectations.
05:15 - 05:17
So social media can be known as a highlight reel,
05:17 - 05:19
which means that you're just essentially looking
05:19 - 05:21
at the glorified version of everybody's life
05:22 - 05:23
because most people don't post about
05:23 - 05:27
their flaws and it's obviously uncomfortable.
05:27 - 05:29
We all know it's uncomfortable to post about our flaws.
05:29 - 05:36
So it's most cases you're looking at just the good parts of people's lives and
05:37 - 05:38
um you know,
05:38 - 05:42
milestones that they're hitting or just the fun that they're having or whatever.
05:42 - 05:49
Um and this can directly relate to comparison fomo and negative feelings.
05:49 - 05:52
Now comparison, I liked this little photo kind of explained
05:53 - 05:56
um I wish I was as fit as her or I wish I had a career like her.
05:56 - 05:58
So these two girls are, you know,
05:58 - 06:02
maybe seeing a post or something and they're ultimately comparing
06:02 - 06:06
what they think is lacking in their lives to the
06:06 - 06:09
good part of somebody else's and that's very detrimental for
06:09 - 06:13
mental health um fomo is the fear of missing out.
06:13 - 06:14
So you know,
06:14 - 06:20
when we have life duties or life responsibilities and we can't always attend,
06:20 - 06:27
you know a dinner or a holiday party or you know, even a vacation and
06:27 - 06:30
we start to have this like fear of missing out
06:30 - 06:32
and we start to feel bad because we are watching,
06:32 - 06:35
you know other people posting about the stuff that we want to be at
06:35 - 06:38
and that gives us negative feelings you know,
06:38 - 06:42
towards ourselves and even towards those people that might have gone, you know,
06:42 - 06:44
without us, even if it's not their fault,
06:44 - 06:48
but um a lot of us have experienced fomo in some way or some
06:48 - 06:54
form at some time um it's very easy to get jealous of other people,
06:54 - 06:56
especially when you are looking at a highlight reel.
06:57 - 06:59
Um and like I said, that creates
07:00 - 07:01
negative feelings.
07:02 - 07:04
Um the cycle of negative feelings,
07:04 - 07:06
I liked this because it says the person editing
07:06 - 07:10
their own photos can be can be impacted.
07:10 - 07:13
So this means when you're constantly using you know,
07:13 - 07:17
Photoshop or filters and you're editing photos,
07:17 - 07:22
it's almost like you're setting up yourself to think that you should look one way
07:22 - 07:25
when in reality obviously everybody has flaws
07:26 - 07:27
and that's not healthy.
07:27 - 07:32
Um People seeing the edited edited images can be impacted as well.
07:32 - 07:33
So when you're seeing the highlight reel and you're
07:33 - 07:37
seeing the edited images of somebody's you know,
07:37 - 07:40
perfect day at the beach or going out or whatever
07:41 - 07:43
and you think, oh I don't look like that.
07:43 - 07:45
So that starts to create negative feelings within yourself
07:45 - 07:49
because you're comparing um the flawed version of yourself
07:50 - 07:53
to the perfect version of somebody else.
07:53 - 07:56
Um and this creates unattainable beauty standards.
07:57 - 07:58
I work
07:58 - 08:05
very closely with this on a consistent basis. Um I am a hair and makeup artist
08:05 - 08:09
and I do a lot of special events and I work with brides
08:09 - 08:10
mostly
08:11 - 08:17
And I will say that I see this probably 98% of the time where I have a bride that will
08:17 - 08:19
come to me and they show me a picture and
08:19 - 08:22
I have to explain to them this has been photoshopped,
08:22 - 08:26
the lighting, in this is not accurate um or just you know,
08:26 - 08:29
it's been adjusted or filtered or whatever it is and you
08:29 - 08:32
have to explain to people like you're a flawed human being,
08:32 - 08:33
It's not gonna,
08:33 - 08:36
I just don't want you to set up yourself to think
08:36 - 08:40
that it's this is gonna be possible because in the picture,
08:40 - 08:43
you know, they're editing photos to look like
08:43 - 08:44
you know,
08:44 - 08:47
barbie, but that's that's not always the case. Um
08:48 - 08:52
so all these things can directly impact our mental health and
08:52 - 08:54
it's essentially creating, you know,
08:54 - 08:58
a crisis for everybody's mental health on our body image.
09:00 - 09:06
Um and these unrealistic expectations are very overwhelming.
09:06 - 09:07
As I mentioned before,
09:07 - 09:11
the filters in Photoshop um lead to body dysmorphia
09:12 - 09:15
constantly comparing becomes overwhelming and detrimental for mental health.
09:16 - 09:21
Um So as you can see she's, you know, comparing herself in the mirror to what she
09:22 - 09:27
thinks she sees, even though that's not that's not how she looks. Um
09:27 - 09:29
So it's easy for us to focus on the
09:29 - 09:33
negatives about our bodies instead of the positives,
09:36 - 09:38
psychological disorders
09:38 - 09:44
and the psychological effects can be anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia,
09:44 - 09:47
self absorption absorption and more.
09:47 - 09:48
Um,
09:48 - 09:52
so this is known as the dark side of social media and this stuff that
09:52 - 09:55
we feel like is just not really talked about as much as it should be,
09:55 - 09:56
at least.
09:56 - 09:57
Um
09:58 - 10:02
it creates a lot of insecurities on our self esteem and it's detrimental
10:02 - 10:05
for our mental health and the more that we give this time,
10:05 - 10:09
especially when we're, you know, losing time being physically active.
10:09 - 10:13
Um, we're not doing good for our mental health if we're
10:14 - 10:16
already struggling with it,
10:16 - 10:18
and we're just giving more time to social media instead
10:18 - 10:21
of doing something that could be productive because essentially it's
10:21 - 10:25
just being counterproductive to continuously look at things that might
10:25 - 10:27
be bothering us or might be a trigger for us
10:31 - 10:35
and youth. Um, and this is one of the most important
10:35 - 10:39
topics of social media is that there's a lot
10:39 - 10:41
of Children that have access to these sites,
10:41 - 10:43
which is actually very scary.
10:43 - 10:47
Um, in the cycle of social media impacts and the
10:47 - 10:51
kind of linked this in a little diagram to show us that, like,
10:51 - 10:54
one thing is obviously just going to domino into the next thing,
10:54 - 10:59
whether it's an adult or whether it's a child and the exposure to social media
11:00 - 11:03
once we have more exposure and more exposure and more exposure
11:04 - 11:08
adult and Children are ultimately going to suffer from sleep, you know,
11:08 - 11:12
insomnia or have a disruption in their sleep patterns.
11:12 - 11:16
Um the more that we give time to social media,
11:17 - 11:18
especially in young Children,
11:18 - 11:24
this is going to decrease room for physical activities, so especially, you know,
11:24 - 11:24
when
11:25 - 11:28
parents are busy and they give Children a tablet
11:28 - 11:30
or they give Children a phone to scroll,
11:30 - 11:36
whether it's, you know, just watching youtube or looking at different platforms,
11:36 - 11:40
this is creating room that the Children need for that physical activity to,
11:40 - 11:42
you know, be playing outside or
11:42 - 11:44
doing something that can be very productive
11:44 - 11:48
for their development physically and mentally.
11:48 - 11:51
Um and that this is going to create sometimes, such as um
11:52 - 11:54
an increase of irritability,
11:54 - 11:58
it's also going to create anxiety and depression and at a young age that's,
11:58 - 12:01
it's very scary to have Children that are dealing with that
12:01 - 12:05
um which ultimately in the end is going to impact their brain development,
12:06 - 12:09
and that's also very scary,
12:10 - 12:13
and the last thing I wanted to touch base on is cyberbullying.
12:13 - 12:17
So cyberbullying is detrimental for the well being of our Children.
12:17 - 12:20
Um as you can see, there's a graph here
12:20 - 12:25
And 78% of people that use Instagram,
12:26 - 12:29
of them said that they saw cyberbullying in some way or some form.
12:29 - 12:34
So our Children, you know, whether they're six or whether they're 15,
12:34 - 12:37
they're being exposed to things,
12:37 - 12:40
especially mature content that they really should not
12:40 - 12:42
be exposed to at such a young age,
12:43 - 12:45
it's ultimately just very scary
12:47 - 12:48
and this is my, we're excited,
12:49 - 12:51
thank you for watching
