00:00 - 00:05
Hello and welcome to my exhibition titled Bringing Light to
00:05 - 00:05
Mental Health.
00:08 - 00:11
The art in this exhibition was picked in order to
00:11 - 00:13
help inform viewers about normalizing mental health.
00:14 - 00:17
About one in five adults have experienced a mental illness.
00:18 - 00:21
Although it is so common, many individuals continue to be
00:21 - 00:23
afraid about discussing their mental health.
00:24 - 00:27
After viewing this exhibit, I hope that awareness can be
00:27 - 00:29
spread and that every individual can reflect on their own
00:30 - 00:35
lines. The first piece of artwork that was included in
00:35 - 00:38
this exhibition is titled All for Not Forget Me Not
00:39 - 00:39
by Rose Clancy.
00:42 - 00:45
This sculpture discusses how the artist had realized her mother
00:45 - 00:47
had suffered with mental illness and brings you back to
00:48 - 00:48
your early childhood.
00:49 - 00:52
In this sculpture, her mother is being portrayed as the
00:52 - 00:55
wheelchair while the artist is portrayed as the little girl
00:55 - 00:59
on the tricycle, reaching for keys potentially a cure to
00:59 - 01:00
her mother's mental illness.
01:01 - 01:06
The artist wants you to take away the message that
01:06 - 01:08
everyone should make sure to take care of their mental
01:09 - 01:15
health. The next piece that was included was titled Mixed
01:16 - 01:18
Up Model by Charlie and Eddie Proudfoot.
01:20 - 01:23
This artwork was created by Charlie and Eddie Proudfoot, who
01:24 - 01:28
although are very known but keep their identity very secret.
01:30 - 01:32
In order to create this piece, they used a human
01:32 - 01:35
figure but distorted all the colors in order to bring
01:35 - 01:38
life to the mental disorder of disassociation.
01:40 - 01:43
Their main goal is to take away all distinguishable features
01:43 - 01:46
of an individual and mask it away to show that
01:46 - 01:49
an individual's physical appearance is nothing compared to the rial
01:49 - 01:51
beauty of an individual's mind.
01:56 - 01:58
The third piece that was included is titled In Flight
01:59 - 01:59
by Lyn Godley.
02:01 - 02:04
This artwork display 75 photos of wings and tail feathers
02:05 - 02:07
of birds that fiber optic lights were threaded through.
02:08 - 02:10
When this first was brought into an exhibit, the artist
02:11 - 02:14
was mesmerized because individuals would spend hours looking at this
02:15 - 02:17
piece and oftentimes would return back to it.
02:17 - 02:21
After doing countless amounts of research, she realized that the
02:21 - 02:23
lights were linked to healing and the same type of
02:23 - 02:24
lights are used for light therapy.
02:25 - 02:29
After coming to this realization, the artist decided to place
02:29 - 02:32
this piece in places that individuals could view as a
02:32 - 02:32
stress reliever.
02:34 - 02:39
In addition, this, um, piece helped inspire God these future
02:40 - 02:46
pieces. The next piece that was included is titled Black
02:46 - 02:48
on Grade by Mark Rothko.
02:49 - 02:51
This piece of art was one of the last pieces
02:52 - 02:55
that the artist published before tragically taking his own life.
02:56 - 02:58
Although there is no direct message that the artist wanted
02:59 - 03:02
the viewer to take away from this piece, each individual
03:03 - 03:05
is able to reflect on the darkness that was foreshadowing
03:05 - 03:06
the artist's life.
03:10 - 03:15
The next piece that was included is called No.
03:16 - 03:17
Five F 1959.
03:19 - 03:22
This piece of art displays a visual representation of what
03:23 - 03:25
the artist has had to deal with her whole life
03:25 - 03:26
because of her mental disorder.
03:27 - 03:31
As a young child, she began to see hallucinations, and
03:31 - 03:34
after becoming scared, she would document them her works air
03:34 - 03:37
created to break the stigma about mental health and how
03:37 - 03:40
should be addressed instead of tucked away.
03:40 - 03:46
Yeah, In addition, she includes her artwork and discusses her
03:46 - 03:50
mental health thoroughly because she wants individuals to be put
03:51 - 03:53
into her own shoes and what she has to deal
03:53 - 03:54
with on a daily basis.
03:59 - 04:02
The last piece that I included was entitled Your Pain
04:02 - 04:05
Is My Pain by Paula Scott ER This artwork displays
04:06 - 04:08
how many times individuals tend to put their own needs,
04:08 - 04:12
second to others, although this could be beneficial in the
04:12 - 04:17
short term, it is not good because individuals start to
04:17 - 04:20
lose themselves because all they're trying to do is to
04:20 - 04:20
help others.
04:21 - 04:24
After in the individual in the artwork becomes tired of
04:24 - 04:25
putting their needs.
04:25 - 04:28
Second, they break free and start to put themselves first,
04:28 - 04:29
bringing a sense of happiness.
04:31 - 04:34
This piece was included last in my exhibition because it
04:34 - 04:38
ties in how important reflecting on your own mental health
04:38 - 04:44
truly is because each individual is different and deals with
04:44 - 04:48
stress and overwhelming situations in their own way and by
04:48 - 04:51
truly getting to know yourself and knowing how to deal
04:52 - 04:56
with certain situations can help you in the long run.
04:58 - 05:01
Thank you so much for attending my exhibition.
